What to do when you simply cannot quit an application?

Sometimes Skype hangs on me when trying to play a voicemail.
When this happens, I just can't quit Skype. I've tried:
1. Just quitting.
2. Using "Force Quit" from the dock.
3. Using "Force Quit" from the OPTIONCMDESC Force Quit dialog.
4. I've even looked up the pid and tried kill -9 on the process in the Terminal.
5. Logging out (won't logout because the app won't quit).
6. Shutting down (won't shut down because the app won't quit).
It just won't quit.
So when this happens, I shut down all my other apps manually and, since there is no other choice I can see, I force a shut-down by holding down the power button.
I hate doing that, but I can't think of any other alternatives at that point.
Is there something else I can do when this happens?
Thanks,
doug

HI Doug,
Since Skype is 3rd party software you might get more help from the Skype forums here:
http://support.skype.com/enUS/category/SKYPE_FOR_MAC_OSX
One thing you can do is run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • What to do when you have an iPhone5 but Mac OS 10.5.8

If you are reading this, you are probably experiencing the same thing as I am: you got an iPhone5, tried to sync it with iTunes just to find out that you can't do so since your Mac runs on OS 10.5.8.
There have been multiple posts about how to upgrade your OS, but none describes what is really involved in the actual process.
I thought I would share my experience here in the hope that it might help others who are in the same situation.
First, I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and told them that I'm considering upgrading to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6).
The representative asked for my computer's information (which I could easily get from "About this Mac" under the Apple menu).
She then told me whether my computer is upgradable to Snow Leopard (it is) and how far I could upgrade (it could take Lion 10.7, but not Mountain Lion 10.8).
The cost of getting Snow Leopard discs is $19.99 + tax, with no shipping fee.
The cost of upgrading to Lion is also  $19.99 + tax, with no shipping fee.
Thus, if I want to go all the way to Lion, it's $19.99 x 2 + tax.
By upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can get iTunes's latest version (10.7) and sync all my media.
By upgrading to Lion, I could also utilize iCloud in full capacity.
I decided to go all the way to Lion.
When I called them this morning (Thursday) around 7:30am, and I was connected to a representative right away.
My entire conversation with her, including the actual order,  took about 15 minutes.
    FYI, they are open 24-7.
I was told that I should get my Snow Leopard discs by tomorrow or Saturday.
As for Lion, you get a code to download, so there is really no wait time (although you obviously have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first).
There are other ways of dealing with the situation (using a pc with Windows, getting iTunes Match (but you pay $24.99/year), getting a new Mac, etc.), but I found upgrading to Snow Leopard for $19.99 with 1-2 days wait quite reasonable.
This is not to say that I was happy about having to go through all this, but I was anticipating much worse - after all, if you do a search for Snow Leopard discs on Amazon, they come up around $100.
And who knows how quickly you can get them from those sellers?
I was also glad to talk to someone who can confirm whether my computer is upgradable or not.
I didn't want to place an order and then find out my Mac can't upgrade.
I hope others find this info helpful.

well unfortunally it is on a windows machine. sp i t is not possible to move it
Yes, it is very possible to move it.
You simply cannot do it using FireWire target disk mode as PT was trying to exlapin.
1 - You can network the computer together.
2 - You can copy them on DVD/CD.
3 - You can use yamipod to get them off the iPod.
4 - You can use the iPod to copy the library from your Windows computer to the Mac computer.

What to do when you pay for an application and it fails to install? I paid for an application, but it fails to install. I have no idea how to contact Nokia (the ovi store is quite bad in this). Also, does anyone have technical suggestions of were to look at to troubleshoot?

You can contact Nokia using the "Contact us" tab to the top right of this screen. I am sure they will be able to assist you or at least point you in the right direction.

  • What happens exactly when you turn off your Wi-Fi?

I was wondering, for the sake of knowing it, what exactly happens when you turn off the Wi-Fi of a Mac? I normally turn it off before putting it to sleep, because there have been some ocassions where after waking up, the Wi-Fi is on but not working. So I was thinking, what exactly happens with the radio when the computer goes to sleep or it's turned off.
    * Is it bad to turn off "hard" your Wi-Fi?
    * Is it bad to keep turning on and off the Wi-Fi?
I think that it may have to be something about a Wi-Fi service, but I simply don't know nor found any answer on the Internet.
    Thanks in advance.
Mac Mini, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
    OS X 10.10.3

When your Mac goes to sleep, the wifi is automatically turned off. When you wake the Mac up, your wifi will turn back on and hopefully will reconnect a short time later.
The purpose of Sleep is to save on energy, so wifi will be shutdown, as it is a significant energy drain.

    I have a PowerMac G5 using Operating system 10.6.8
I took this mac to  the Apple store, they reset my os software and I have been having problems eversince. Since this Mac weights about 50 lbs, I don't want to take it in a gain. But - I am 67 years old and don't really understand some lingo - so straight english would really help.

Startup items must be owned by root, the group must be wheel, and they must only be writeable by root.
You can't readily make the required changes via Finder, so you'll either need to reinstall the software that added them, remove (trash) them altogether (they start qmaster, used by fcp &/or compressor) or use Terminal & the 'sudo' command to alter the ownership & permissions.
If you choose the latter - run these two commands in Terminal while using an admin account, you'll be asked to enter the admin password, which won't be echoed onscreen. Restart afterwards. It's important that you copy/paste these exactly.
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /Library/Startupitems
    sudo chmod -R ugo+rwX,go-w /Library/Startupitems
However - your startup problems with the prohibited sign are unlikely to be resolved by this, although it should avoid the warning messages you describe.

  • What's lost when you reconfigure Enterprise Manager?

    Hi all,
    Going straight into the questions:
What's lost when you reconfigure a EM? And,
What's stored in the EM Repository?
Configuration: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise, Oracle 10g release 2
All of the EM consoles stopped working after we changed the host name on a Windows Server. The EMC services refuse to start.
It seems that using emca to reconfigure the EMs fixes the problem. But the other problem is that EMCA mentioned that all configuration would be lost.
I tried searching around the forum, Google and the official documentation but couldn't find much details.
It would be much appreciated if you could help me out a bit.
    Thanks,
    Benjamin

EM repository consists set of tables in a database containing state information for the managed environment and information about the management packs. It is used as a back-end store by the Oracle Management Servers, providing distributed control between clients and managed nodes.

  • TS1702 What to do when you get "iTunes library app not installed on iPhone; app could not be found"

What to do when you get "iTunes library app not installed on iPhone; app could not be found". None of the Apple suggestions fix the problem. For example, with Animoto, one of the problem apps, I have removed it, reinstalled it, and still get the eoor message.

    Of course.
First of all, this started when an external drive i was using died on me. I have no doubt that these apps indeed are off my system. I figure between the apps I've bought for myself and my kid, I have about 150 apps.
    Now. The issue.
When I sync my iPad with iTunes on my desktop, it goes through normally until it gets to the apps. When that happens, it get an error box that reads "Some of the apps in your iTunes library were not installed on the iPad because one or more errors occurred. For a list of appps that could not be installed, click on the triangle below."
Then I get a list of apps.
(Added note to any iTunes developers out there: The titles of the apps in this list do not always match the titles of the apps in the App Store. For example, one was called "MuseumGame" on my iPad. It's called "Museum of Thieves" on the App Store. I started out with a list of 60 apps. It was a major pain to track them all down. It would be nice to have everything the same so I can use the App Store search more effectively.)
    Anyway, moving on....
The error message stops my sync until I dismiss it. That, honestly, is what makes this whole thing annoying enough to seek out an answer. I can't let my iPad start syncing and walk out of the room. Yeah. I know. First World problems.
Once I dismiss the error, the sync continues and all is well.
I did the following to try to fix the problem. Mostly, I did a lot of searches:
My list of purchased apps on my iPad both using the search box and by going to every page
Searched the main App Store on my iPad using the search field. When that didn't work, I used wider searches and just scanned the page(s) for the little cloud icon that showed I had purchased the app.
I got on my desktop iTunes and searched the apps from there (without a lot of hope, but trying to be complete)
At that point, I came to the conclusion that a small number of the apps are no longer available on the App Store.
Fine. I didn't want them anyway.
I got into iTunes and went to the Apps page. None of the errant apps showed up there. I searched the iTunes help files. Nothing. I crossed my fingers, said a little prayer to the search engine gods, and tried Google. I found some things that sort of matched but they basically boiled down to "re-download the app from the App Store" or "Restore your iPad".
So I spent a couple of hours restoring my iPad. I got the error message again. I hit Google again and came up with this thread. It was as close to my problem as I found.
I think that brings us up to date.
My fundamental problem is that I seem to have found a scenario where if you have to restore apps (because, perhaps, your external drive died) and some of the apps are no longer available for download, there is an error generated that can not be permanently dismissed.
    Did I miss anything important?
