What to do with 1280 x 960 footage without it looking stretched or downgraded?
Ok, Im filming snowboarding segmants for my company using a gopro hero camera. For the most vertical filming I use the r4 mode which films 1280 x 960. This is not an ordinary resolution. When I place the clip into the timeline It does not recognize the video properties of the clip, and prompts me to pick from a pull down. some of the options are: 1280x720, 960x720, 1280x1080, 720x480 ect..
WHAT Resolution should I use?? Ive tryed the 1280x720 and the 960x720. It does not crop the footage; but instead it renders it stretched and much less crisp. FRUSTRAITING. Please, any help would be much appreciated.
Ive tried cineformstudio, and mpeg, with similar results.
Thanks
Well I have only one resolution that I work in...I dont care what old footage I have to make fit...even anamorphic DV...which is ghastly but we havent a choice...
I watch all my stuff on 1920x1080...the television screen , so that is what I start with.
So I have a choice, either I can scale it up and look at pixels or I can watch it on my tv with a nice crisp black border.
Call me an amateur but that is the way I approach it, after all you will have to watch it on some sort of screen ...what other choices are there?.
Now that I have said all that hopefully someone will pop in here and tell us the way a pro would do it and we can both learn something.
To answer your question re export...it makes it easier I think to stick with 1920x1080...
And as far as compatibility goes...well that has been a problem forever.
try it all anyway...call it an experiment, you can do it any number of ways quite quickly, and you can change the properties of the project at any time...as many times as you like.
cheers

How to Create a 1280 x 960 project?
Cannot find a way to create a project from scratch in 4:3 HD apect ratio. I´ve tried adding a video from my Gopro, others created in imovie, photoshop, or quicktime; but always comes the window: "video properties are not recognized"
The workaround I found for another project was to create a bigger size frame, that contained the 1280 x 960 footage, and then cut the letterbox with compressor and exported just I wanted. Really time consuming because compressor is TREMENDOUSLY slow and buggy.
But on this new project I´m working with stills, and I need to see my 1280 x 960 frame inside fcpx, because many of the pictures move, zoom and pan; and if the workspace is bigger than final export, I´m driving blind.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
PabloHard to say why you're getting beachballs. Could be hardware, Could be software. Could be project.
How are drives for free space…at least 20% on your systems drive and your media drive?
BTW. are your systems and media drives separate?
Could be 3rd party apps or plug-ins… anything recently added?
Create a new project copy original sequence and paste into new project.
Good luck.

Does anyone know the closest preset in Premiere Elements 12 for 1280 x 960 footage at 47.95 fps? Can you create a custom preset? Apologies if this has been asked before, have scoured the forum with no luck. Thank you
Thank you for the info.
Actually, I was thinking about some non-standard video, and not a GoPro. As the GoPro produces several different formats, with some models up to 4K footage, I am surprised at the dimensions of the Frame Size, that you have. Why was that chosen to begin with?
Most GoPros can record at 1920 x 1080 (a standard HD Frame Size). Why not use that, as PrE will be able to handle the footage perfectly.
For higher definition material, I have Imported and edited GoPro 2.7K footage, in a 1920 x 1080 Project. There was another step required, to use GoPro 4K footage, which was to convert it via the GoPro CineForm "converter," but then that worked fine too.
Have you looked into the other recording modes for your GoPro? That would be how I would address this, so as to not have a lot of hacking, or even the acceptance of black bars around the Frame. Keeping within the standards would be my first choice.
If you have already produced footage at 1280 x 960, you might get adequate results by Importing that into a standard 1920 x 1080 Project, then Scaling that footage UP to match. Though there will be a small loss in overall quality, with that Scale to Frame Size operation, the footage from the GoPro is quite good, and one may never even notice that it has been Scaled. Then, for subsequent shooting, just change the mode on the GoPro to 1920 x 1080.
Good luck, and please let us know if that is helpful.

What's best strategy for dealing with 40+ hours of footage
We have been editing a documentary with 45+ hours of footage and presently have captured roughly 230 gb. Needless to say it's a lot of files. What's the best strategy for dealing with so much captured footage? It's almost impossible to remember it all and labeling it while logging it seems inadequate as it difficult to actually read comments in dozens and dozens of folders.
Just looking for suggestions on how to deal with this problem for this and future projects.
G5 Dual Core 2.3 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2.5 g ram, 2 internal sata 2 250gbDitto, ditto, ditto on all of the previous posts. I've done four long form documentaries.
First I listen to all the the sound bytes and digitize only the ones that I think I will need. I will take in much more than I use, but I like to transcribe bytes from the non-linear timeline. It's easier for me.
I had so many interviews in the last doc that I gave each interviewee a bin. You must decide how you want to organize the sound bytes. Do you want a bin for each interviewee or do you want to do it by subject. That will depend on you documentary and subject matter.
I then have b-roll bins. Sometime I base them on location and sometimes I base them on subject matter. This last time I based them on location because I would have a good idea of what was in each bin by remembering where and when it was shot.
Perhaps, you weren't at the shoot and do not have this advantage. It's crucial that you organize you b-roll bins in a way that makes sense to you.
I then have music bins and bins for my voice over.
Many folks recommend that you work in small sequences and nest. This is a good idea for long form stuff. That way you don't get lost in the timeline.
I also make a "used" bin. Once I've used a shot I pull it out of the bin and put it "away" That keeps me from repeatedly looking at footage that I've already used.
The previous posts are right. If you've digitized 45 hours of footage you've put in too much. It's time to start deleting some media. Remember that when you hit the edit suite, you should be one the downhill slide. You should have a script and a clear idea of where you're going.
I don't have enough fingers to count the number of times that I've had producers walk into my edit suite with a bunch of raw tape and tell me that that "want to make something cool." They generally have no idea where they're going and end up wondering why the process is so hard.
Refine your story and base your clip selections on that story.
Good luck
Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) -
(I'm in FCP 7/Motion 4, but am hopeful someone here can answer my question)
Having shot on a Panasonic HVX200, when I bring footage into FCP it created a project in 960 X 720 rather than 1280 X 720. As I understand it, the difference is in pixel shifting.
I've now created a Motion effect in DVCProHD to match my FCP project, that is, in 960 X 720.
Before I ask a graphic artist to give me graphics, I want to be sure to ask for the right specs. Should I ask for 1280 X 720 (I think I should) or 960 X 720?Thank you for the info.

So I am not sure what is going on?
Anyone have similar situation?
what did u do to get Safari working again for you?
thanksIf you're running 19.7.4, then you're installation is hosed. Safari 5.1.7 is what ships with that version. If you failed to save the ill-designed installer, then you'll have to waste resources installing again (necessitates DLing the entire 3.6+ GB monstrosity).

What to do with Etresoft report on slow running MacBook? Macbook started slowdown after last OS update. I have tried restarting computer, making sure there are no log in items, repaired disk permissions, removed all files from desktop, checked for missing updates. Nothing has helped. I greatly appreciate any and all help. THANKS! Here is the Etresoft report:

I am looking for help!
My planned workflow is as follows:
Footage recorded on Canon Rebel T3i ---> Edited on Final Cut Pro 6 (sequence compression is apparently H.264 according to the browser) ---> Compressed with Compressor (ver 3.0.5) in original 1920 x 1080, 24p format ---> Uploaded to Vimeo
I am now at the point where I am trying to find a Compressor setting that will create a compressed movie that looks somewhat similar to what I see in the canvas in Final Cut Pro 6. I have tried using the H.264, Apple ProRes 422(HQ), HD Uncompressed 8-bit, and XDCAM HD 1080p24 settings and in all cases, my movie plays back fine, however, the brightness/exposure seems to be hiked up a few stops and there is a substantial amount of noise in both the blacks and midtones that doesn't appear in FCP's canvas.
My compressed movie I wish to export is only intended for Vimeo (similar to Youtube). Is there a different setting I should be trying, or perhaps a way of downloading a more effective or current codec?? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as it is very disappointing to see my movie degraded so much from its orginal quality.
Shaun MH.264. But the FCP Legacy (FCP 7 and earlier) Canvas and Viewer aren't color accurate. Not designed to be. Their purpose is to show you what you are doing, show you the footage so you can make editing decisions. For color accuracy, the ideal way, since this was designed with television and feature editing in mind, is to have an IO device like those AJA.com and DECKLINK.com make, and send the signal to an HDTV or broadcast monitor.
Apple has realized that more and more people are editing for the web and computers only, so they made it so that FCX's viewer IS color accurate. So...what that means is that currently, using what you have, you won't get things to match....they aren't designed to. So you can adjust for what happens when you export.
But a big issue is that you are editing H.264 in FCP native. FCP doesn't work with H.264 native well, all sorts of potential issues can arise. Sync issues, quality issues, the correct shot be exported, all sorts of things. FCP works best with the FCP editing codecs. What are they? They are found in the EASY SETUP list. But for HD, the most commonly used option is ProRes 422. There is a BIG problem that FCP Legacy will SEEM like it'll work with H.264 natively just fine...it doens't throw up any warnings. That is bad. Also something Apple fixed with FCX.
The fact that you are editing H.264, and trying to export H.264, might also lead to the footage being more off that it would if you edited ProREs 422, and exported H.264. Note...H.264 is a higher data rate codec, and easier for FCP to work with...but because it has a higher data rate, the file sizes are much higher than the original H.264. 5-6x larger. FCP 7 did have a way to import Canon 5D, 7D and T2i (needed a hack with the T2i) via Log and Transfer. But it doesn't work with the T3i...not even with that hack. Because FCP 7 was no longer updated after the T3i came out. It's 4 year old software, discontinued 2 years ago.
If you want to edit native, you need to look at Adobe Premiere Pro CC. It's interface is more accurate too. -
What timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format?
I am shooting with the Sony HXR NX5, and i would like to ask what timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format? I do not see any format in the Final Cut Pro and in Motion that matches my camera format.
Thank you very much for your assistance.
Best regards,
RichardIF you are working with FCP 7.0.3 (the last version) then you use Log and Transfer to ingest your footage from that camera, and Log and Transfer will convert the AVCHD camera files to ProRes.
Once the camera files are ingested, make a new (empty) timeline, and either drag a source clip or edit it to that timeline and you will be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source clip. Say yes and you should be good to go.
AVCHD, H.264,etc. files are not directly usable in FCP without conversion.

Enabling LOG C color space conversion with cLog or sLOG footage.
Hi Gang,
I shoot Sony F3, Canon C100 and Canon 5DMk3 cameras in their respective LOG modes whenever possible. I would like to apply the newly added LOG LUT feature designated for ARRI footage to footage from these cameras. Although LOG C is different than the other LOG modes, it should be a good starting point to color grading.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the ARRI Log C toggle option to appear with my footage. Apparently there is a certain Metadata Tag in Alexa footage which must make it possible for the Radio Button to appear. I basically want to trick my FCP-X interface into believing the footage is ARRI Alexa Log-C footage even though it is actually Canon cLog, Sony sLog or Cinestyle. Yes, I know the Alexa Log-C profile is a bit different from the ideal profiles for each of these cameras, but it should be close enough for my needs. I will then fine tune each individual camera's color corrections using the FCP-X color panes. What I want is the Curve effect which is difficult to mimic using the Standard Color Panes. BTW, I've been using a 3rd party effect called Natress Curves for this until now, but would like to start using the built-in LUT feature instead since my company has multiple editbays which lack 3rd party plugins. Also, using the built-in color space conversion looks much simpler than the techniques I've developed for the Natress Plugin.
Can anyone tell me which metadata tag is necessary in order to activate the LOG-C LUT option? Thanks Matt ThomasThanks for the reply BenB. I appreciate your willingness to help with this topic, but I'm not sure you understand what I want to do and why.
I want to use the LUT for its Luma curve in actual color corrections in FCP-X. I am not trying to use it for display of dailies or other uses which are common with LUTs.
LOG space color space is similar, but not identical with many cameras. ARRI LOG-C is also very similar to the color space used in Cineon and DPX film scans which I used to see regularly. The black points may vary, but I can adjust black points in many ways. The general shape of the LUT curve should be very similar to other curves used to correct other LOG spaces. If these curves were dramatically different from eachother, they wouldn't be defined as LOG space. LOG is a mathematical formula for how the bits are arranged and reserved in the file structure which is somewhat similar to how stills photographers manage Zone System exposure indexes There is no magic about the way ARRI defines this. It is a way for ARRI footage to match 35mm scans easily and other cameras using LOG space such as the ones I am using regularly. I would LOVE to have Apple include specific LOG LUT's for each camera which I use, but since they have not done that yet, I would like to experiement with the included one which is designed for ARRI LOG-C.
I am a very experienced professional and understand very well how and why LUT's are being used in many ways across the industry. Yes, I use Resolve for certain tasks and yes, it is the best place to do advanced color work. The new Resolve LOG color correction pane is very useful and superior to all tools I've seen. But I also use and enjoy the convenience of keeping my material within FCP-X as much as possible. And in many cases, FCP-X color correction tools are adequate for my needs. But when using Cinestyle, cLOG or sLOG footage on my cameras, controlling the rolloff of highlights is very difficult to do with the simple 3-way controls. in FCP-X.
Since FCP-X has no Luma or RGB curves tool built-in, I currently use the Nattress Curves plugin in an Adjustment layer over my timelines to provide a basic film look. The downside to this is that not all my editbays have licenses for the 3rd party plugins, and also there are some odd workflow issues which would be much simpler to manage the way that FCP-X does with Arri LOG-C footage.
My question is how to trick FCP-X into thinking the footage is LOG-C so I can use the newly added checkbox to interpret the footage using the LOG-C LUT in an early stage of color correction while the footage is still managed in Floating Point color space.
The LOG-C profile in the Nattress plugin works as a very good starting point for advanced color correction for footage shot by Sony F3, Canon C and Canon Cinestyle cameras. In fact, it is also a fairly good starting point for GoPro Hero3 ProTune footage as well. I am not attempting ot use the LOG-C LUT solely for color correction. Instead, I want to use it for CineGamma tonal correction which is only possible with a proper luma or RGB Curve. I will then use the FCP-X color panes to ad specific modifications to each camera's footage to more closely match what I'm looking for. If I'm dealing with a camera with lower dynamic range, I adjust the FCP-X panes to compensate for that particular camera, then Paste these attributes to all the clips from that camera. This often results in a very good match from camera to camera while using the same LUT for the tonal look. I would like to test this technique using the built-in ARRI LOG-C feature, but unfortunately, cannot until FCP-X allows me to use the LUT on other kinds of footage.
I hope this makes sense. Keep in mind I am a very experienced and technical user and have a long history in the blogosphere and forums about these kinds of topics. I have very specific reasons for why I want to do this, and until Apple provides other LOG correction tools or a bonafide Curves tool, I am seeking to find a way to use the LOG-C as an alternative solution. BenB, it could be that Apple has closed out the LUT from other types of footage because of comments from their close peers which are not exactly helpful to actual real-world users. There are many more cLOG, sLOG and Cinestyle users using FCP-X than there are ARRI users and it is unfortunately they chose to limit their features to exclude these somewhat arbitrarily. My goal is to find a workaround for this odd decision and would love any tips or suggestions if the answer lies in the footage Metadata. -
What metadata travels with mov?
Hey there,
Does anyone know where I can find a breakdown of what metadata travels with Captured footage. If I ingest clips and drag them to a different Project the Reel number comes along but not the description.
Does anyone know where I can find a list of what does stick with the mov? Log note? master comment? etc.
Thanks.Reel ID and Timecode ... that's it, nothing else.
That said, OS X itself (since 10.4) is capable of embedding far more metadata in any file through the use of arbitrarily extensible attributes ... it just doesn't with these quicktimes, if only it would.

I've just found that three movies I've bought from iTunes on on my iPad are not showing up on Apple TV or anywhere other than that iPad. What's up with that and will I lose these films if I reset this iPad?
Thanks. The reason this has become an issue is that I recently bought a new Macbook Air that the iPad is not synced to. The one is was synced to was stolen. If I want to sync this iPad to the new Air, won't it be wiped before I'm able to copy these films or am I wrong about that?

What's wrong with my browsers?
When i first got my macbook the internet was going really slow but then i changed the dns server to 4.2.2.2 and sometimes change it to 4.2.2.1 and the internet got better but now my browsers are acting funny.
One moment i'm surfing webpages with safari or firefox.... Chatting with AdiumX or MS Messenger... and suddenly it just stops... Msn is getting time-out's, Safari says I'm not connected.
But Airport sais it is still connected to my wireless network (with all the black bar's filled). It has valid IP adress etc, But everywhere I want to go on the internet it sais I'm not connected.
When I disconnect the airport en let it reconnect with my wireless network, the connection is fine.
how can i fix this? Most users shouldn't be manually entering DNS addresses, and those DNS addresses you mention probably aren't intended for end users. Is Level3 your ISP?
That doesn't answer 'what's wrong with my browsers?', but a good start would be to configure your network according to your ISP's instructions. If you have DNS problems then, you might try using OpenDNS. -
What's wrong with networking since Leopard?
Hi,
I'm with Mac since years. I was a PC User once and spent hours with all kinds of network troubles. What convinced me with Mac right in the beginning was easy networking: It just worked!
But since Leopard things got worse: I have several MBP's, iMacs, Airport Extreme's and Airport Express's at different places which I installed, and I face the same problems at EVERY place:
- I can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility, ...
- Sometimes only two Macs are allowed to connect to one AExtreme
- Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
- After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
- Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
- connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Now I know about networking, about configuration, I've done this for years. Whatever I do, problems disappear and appear again, at different times, at different places with different hardware.
What is wrong with Leopard? Such problems remind me of times with Windows98 and stuff like that. What's wrong with networking since Leopard?
on my network and many i have setup there have been no problems with leopard. However there are always teething problems with new operating systems. Thankfully with leopard only a tiny percentage of users experience technical difficulties.
can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility,
is it set to use WPA/WPA2
Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
sometimes my macbook pro takes a while to show up any networks if there are lots in the area this is because it is scanning them all.
After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
What kind of router are you using? What happens if you powercycle the router?
# Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
# connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Have you tried resetting your AE to default. reinstalling its firmware or checking for a firmware update?
Have you tried changing hte wireless channel your networ is broadcasting on?

Did you upgrade install your leopard installation or did you do clean (erase) installations?
Have you tried created new network locations? -
What's Wrong with My Computer?
I have a G5 desktop computer, I believe it's referred to as a "Power Mac." My mom purchased it some years ago, I think in late 2005 shortly after this particular model was on the market.
Info is:
Version 10.5.8
Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive 240 GB (127 GB unused/available)
My mother wasn't using this computer for many years, and my 13" Macbook was giving me trouble, so she gave this one to me. It's all been great (she maxed out the memory and hard drive space when she bought it, even though it is outdated and insignificant compared to current models), except for one little thing... Browsing the internet is usually fine when it's only one window, but not always. However, it is almost a guarantee that while trying to operate multiple windows and trying to play a video, Safari will crash. And not just once in awhile. I'm talking about on a daily basis. During regular offline computer use, like Photoshop or iTunes, the computer will sometimes grey over (as if someone put a fairly thick grey film over the entire screen), and tell me I have to restart the computer. So what's wrong with it? I presume it is a physical issue (failing memory, mother board, etc.), but what?Your computer is not remotely "maxed out" with RAM.
You're describing a G5 Quad like mine (though mine was built in June of 2006), and maxed out means having 16 GB of RAM installed, like mine has.

That's called a Kernel Panic, and, yes, it is most often caused by hardware problems, such as bad RAM or mismatched RAM. I can't imagine how you get to 4.5 GB of RAM without exponentially increasing the risk of mismatched RAM.
RAM has to be installed in matched pairs, starting from the center slots and spreading outward: 4*3*2*1*1*2*3*4
On the other hand, my own personal experience has led me to conclude that Safari is a piece of cr@p. It causes problems just being active in the background, causing other applications to fail.
Check your RAM carefully, starting with just one pair of matched RAM sticks in the two center slots, then adding one pair at a time. Check your hard disk with Apple's Disk Utility.
The kernel panics can be caused by a damaged directory too, so if you own Disk Warrior, run it. If you don't own DiskWarrior, at least Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility and use Verify Disk/Repair Disk with it.
I'd also recommend downloading and installing Applejack and run it according to the instructions.
Good luck.
