Hey guys, We got a Mid 2011 27 inch iMac and i'M loving it. Strangely enough we needed two machines and while this one was in the process of shipping the ole Mac Pro gave me the CPUB red light and just wouldn't recover. During the lag time between the iMac's arriaval and the Mac Pro's breakdown I had to carry my home PC to the office to get some work done (thank God I was working in Premier Pro). My boss said I could have the Mac Pro for parts or whatever, but I wanna at least try and save it(considering we've now got 4 drives with work on em and no place to put em). Any suggestions guys? Shipping to the states is a no, no btw. We're in Jamaica.

The heatsink is still fastened?
The latch is to the side of each processor cover, holding the processor cover which holds the processor.
If the heatsink is still in position, the latch can't be seen.
Once the heatsink screws are released, a wiggle of the heatsink should cause the thermal compound to release, freeing the heatsink.

Upgrading? 3 year-old Mac Pro 3.1 with 8 GB RAM

I have a 3-year old Mac Pro (model 3.1) with 8 GB RAM and 2 Quad Core Intel Xeon processors. The RAM consists of 8 x 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Two questions:
1) I need tp upgrade my RAM to 16 GB or more to run a new software (memory intensive application). I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade this system for ~$500 or just buy a new system with newer components. Also, whether the system can effectively use 16 GB of memory
2) Recently my Mac Pro has been very slow and jittery e.g. when I switch between applications. I've already tried things like cleaning up the hard drive / repairing disk permissions with little improvement. The only other thing I can think of doing is wiping the system clean and reinstalling everything. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and if there is asomething to do to prevent this from happening in the future.

I would add 4 x 4GB to get to 20GB and see how that goes.
Upgrade the hard drive: SSD or 10K WD VR 600GB or something.
Off load your home media data and such to another drive, and go for a lean-mean OS/Apps only boot drive.

Bought internal bluetooth card in 5 year old Mac Pro; not working right?

Bought internal bluetooth adaptor for my 5 year old Mac Pro. It searches for bluetooth devices, but dosn't find bluetooth devices; any advice?
I secured it interlanly with the two screws supplied. Had replacement card sent out, but same thing?
Using it with Apple Magic Mouse. I know mouse works as I tried it on friends new iMac.
Using latest Snow Leopard, and have seperate boot drive with Lion. Dosn't work on either.

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and have been trying to back it up on my Time Capsule for the first time. However, it says there is no available disk space. This time capsule was used with my old Mac Pro that had a Home vault open on it.

The time capsule was used with my prior Mac Pro laptop that unfortunately had the home vault active on it.
My new Mac Book Pro does not have home vault open. But I am unable to back up my new MAC pro laptop because it says there is not enough storage space available. Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
When I go into the time capsule - it shows me NOTHING as being in the backup datas. So, I don't know where to begin to delete all the old data off the
time Capsule and start with a completely empty machine.

Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

Guassian Blur hanging up in PS CS5.1 on 1 year old Mac Pro

I am running Photoshop CS5.1 on a Mac Pro that is only about a year old (OS - Snow Leopard). The machine has 24GB of ram and I am devoting about 18GB of the ram to Photoshop. It doesn't matter how big the image is that I am working on but whenever I try to run a Guassian Blur on a layer mask, the dialog opens up and just starts the beach ball spinning. I then try to click on the slider or type in a value and it doesn't respond. After about 2-3 minutes of spinning beach ball, the slider jumps to 250 and starts acting real wonky - the slider moves with the cursor without even holding and clicking on top of the slider - almost like its stuck to the cursor. I've tried running in both 64-bit and 32-bit modes and the same behavior occurs. Anybody else experience this weird behavior?

Do not put new money today into Mac Pro 2008 or previous. (the FBDIMM memory is too expensive).
Some say skip the 2009 model as the 2010 is better (has built-in support for hex processors) but not a lot more money.
Computers will always be better, faster, and cheaper if you wait. [A new Mac Pro may not be solid on day 1.] At some point, you have to get your work done, and just have to hold your nose and choose from what is avaiable and stable at the moment.

What to start with my new Mac Pro

Hello Mac people,
I just got new Mac Pro (still in the box) and need to do several things to it. Can you help me to do it in right order?
Here are the things I need to do to my new Mac Pro...
* get it out of the box and plug the power cord, of course...
* put new memory sets 4x2GB=8GB (will take out the factory 2GB too)
* add 2 hard drives (750GB each)
* put pcie card (for video output device - blackmagic)
* put pcie card for the external hard drive
* and of course, I need to transfer everything from old ppc G5 to new Mac Pro...
OK, my questions are...
1. What would be the right order to do the things I listed above?
2. If there's no right order for putting the pcie card, memory, and hard drive, can I do all of them at the same time? or should be done one by one...?
3. when would be the good time to bring the stuff from old mac? regarding things I listed above...

Run Apple Hardware Test first.
Backup / clone your hard drive before making changes.
Once cloned to new drive, and run Repair Permissions and insure it works properly, pull the original drive and keep off line for now.
Don't import G5 PPC applications, reinstall (if they have installers).
Test it works with Apple RAM before pulling.
Make changes one at a time so you know if something isn't right.
It could take awhile to really know if something needs updating, and assume your PCIe cards are Leopard + Mac Pro compatible and you have the latest drivers handy if you need to apply updates (very common with new systems and new OS like Leo).
Plug in the power cord last.
Once you know everything works, import your personal settings to your new OS.

There is no way to intelligently answer your question (re: performance). Since you are running what is unsupported software (by Apple), I would seriously consider upating to the latest software.

5 year old mac pro. Does not boot up.

I've tried the usual online trouble shoot topics but none fit exactly. I push power button on case, fan whirs into life (occasionally a bit noisier than usual), the power light comes on as does the monitor power light, but thats it. No boot up and no image or colour on screen. I've unplugged everything and started again but to no avail. Any ideas anyone please?

Check under App Store/Purchases for your purchase. Install it from there again. ... Hopefully you did buy this from Apple's App Store, right!

Old Mac Pro vs. new iMac?

I have a nearly three year old Mac Pro that is currently being serviced at my local Apple Store. For almost three years I have had trouble with it -- first it spontaneously rebooted itself which was fixed by replacing power supply, logic board and processor. The other problem is the recurring (but randomly recurring) seizing of Time Machine. I've tried three separate external hard drives, three different cables, all the FW ports, archive and reinstall twice, erase and reinstall twice, and hours on the phone with tech support. No one knows what to do. I have no confidence that they'll find anything this time either. I've just about had it. And my Apple Care runs out in two weeks. So...I'm thinking of getting a new iMac to replace it, because I'm not doing the heavy duty phot/video/design work on the Pro that I thought I was going to do. I know it's a hard question to answer, but aside from the speed, which I probably won't notice that much, what are the biggest trade-offs "stepping down" to the iMac? Thanks

Your 2nd and 3rd disk drives will be external Firewire 800 drives. Slower than internal drives.
You can't change your mind. No video card upgrades 2 years down the road. What you buy is what you live with. You can expand memory to 16GB (which seems plenty to me) and you can (with some effort) replace the disk drive with a larger one.
On the other hand:
1. Less money, a lot less.
2. An awesome 27-inch monitor.

Is it worth fixing my old mac pro?

I have a Mac pro Dual Core that I bought in around 2006
I cant tell you what HD/Ram it has as I cant remember off the top of my head and dont have the machine with me as its at the apple store.
Now I have never so much as had a niggle of a problem with it in all the years Ive had it and havnt even thought about a new machine as its been more than reliable and has suited my needs well.
UNTILL two weeks ago my machine went into kernal panic, after trying everything I could I decided it was time to take my old trusty mac pro to the geniuses!
Well they have now had it for a couple of weeks and have narrowed the issue down to the logic board and graphics card, that cost of repair is £650 inc VAT OUCH!!!
Now Im in a right royal dilemna, it seems a lot of money to me to through at an old mac, however I am prepared to pay it out if its going to keep going for another few years. But Im thinking I might live to regret it if it goes wrong again!
At the moment the cost of a new mac pro is out of reach so my options are to sell my macpro for parts and to buy a 6 month - a year old mac pro or do I get a new 27inch Imac instead?

I have a Macbook Pro 2.4 intel Duo core and Im quite happy with that and it handles my work without an issue, so on that basis I think an Imac would work.
I use my computer for mainly web development but I do quite a bit of graphics work also for print. I mainly use photoshop, navicat, Fetch, dreamweaver and illustartor quite often needing them all open at once.
So my options are:

I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

I live in India and I have gone to authorised Apple technicians and they infomed me that I will have to replace the LCD panel as well even though it is not cracked, is this really true or can I just change the outer shell? Also they say that they cannot do it in India... can I do it myself at home?

Since it is 3 years old find a local repair shop that can replace the glass Only. you may have to send it out to a Non Local shop for that but there are some that specialize in doiing that on Mac notebooks.
Apple will ony replace the complete screen enclosure with all normal parts included, LCD, Camera, Aluminum housing and glass as one unit. Which is very expensive. Or you could just use it as a desktop system with external monitor and buy a new notebook.
