What to do with 30p in final cut

I have a Canon HG21 and I have always shot in 60i. Tonight I shot a short clip in pf30. WHile looking at the camera's LCD screen while recording I noticed how un-smooth and choppy the video was, especially while panning...even slowly. After I transferred in FCP (7.0) the video in the canvas looks much smoother, but looks like crap on my HD LCD vizio monitor I have connected via HDMI to a black magic intensity card.
I realize the camera saves to pf30 in a 60i container on my camera, and when I transfer it into FCP it probably only sees the 60i.
I have read the links people have posted about this topic but am still fairly confused. Do I need to export this pf30 clip to compressor and apply frame control settings like output fields and deinterlace options? If so, what do I need to do to correctly make this video 30 frames progressive for editing in FCP instead of 60i?
Thanks!

I have now attached a copy of my VI.  What I've been asked to do is produce a sine wave with the amplitude and frequency adjustable via controls on the front panel, which I have done.  However I also need to display a section afterwards.  I know I can wire up a control to the phase of the simulate signal VI, so do I have to just use the simulate signal VI twice, once with the full sine wave and once with the phase shift, or is there a less convoluted way of doing this?

  • What's involved with upgrading to Final Cut Express HD?

I was just wondering what is involved with upgrading to High Definition. My current computer is a PowerBook G4 and I did not know if this would support the HD. What percentage of users are still using the regular and what percent have upgraded to HD.
I figured that when I buy a new Mac I would upgrade the HD, but until that point I'd stick with the regular resolution. I would need to buy a new HD video camera too.
    Thanks for any thoughts!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD (3.0 and 3.5) is not only for HD editing, it's the new name for Final Cut Express since version 3.0, and you can edit in HDV or SD with the same product.
HDV is pretty demanding on computer power, RAM and storage.
Altough a G4 1,0 GHz meets the minimun requirements to do HDV, pay attention to video card itself. See spec section for FCE HD:
"Macintosh computer with 500MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 (550MHz for PowerBook G4) or Intel Core Duo
    512MB RAM
Display with 1024-by-768 (or higher) resolution
An AGP or PCI Express graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme or an Intel GMA integrated graphics processor in MacBook or Mac mini
Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
    QuickTime 7.0.4 or later
HDV features require 1GHz or faster processor and 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended)
500MB disk space required for applications; additional 16GB of additional storage space for Soundtrack and LiveType content (can be installed on separate disks)
    DVD drive for software installation"
A big monitor is also a good idea (kind of one to one pixel at displaying video:the 23" Apple cinema HD display 1920 X 1200 pixels or greater).
Think about an external hard drive to store your captured media.
In the camcorders line-up, it's better to choose a tape recording based one (no hard disk, nor DVD nor media card recorder), because FCE HD allows capture directly from a such camcorder (altough it's possible to download from other sources and convert your material to something that FCE can handles without rendering. A 3 CDD one is better (I own the fabulous FX-1). Many HDV camcorders allows down conversion directly from capturing process: so we can edit in SD format with the same material.
Currently, HDV can be edited on FCE HD, but you will have to print to tape your edited HDV content to keep it in HDV format. You cannot burn HDV or blue-ray DVD ( aka high definition DVD) from iDVD 6 and watch it on a HD TV set.
There are some HD DVD burners around the corner ($$$ to buy and blank DVDs are not cheap) but the choice of software is very limited.
HDV is simply ashtoning to watch on HD tv set and it's the future.
I think you can count on an instant 200$ rebate if you buy a new mac and FCE HD on apple store:

  • What happens to Apple Color users with the new Final Cut Pro x

What happens to Apple Color users with the new Final Cut Pro x?

Some of the functions of Color have been incorporated into FCP X, meaning you will have more than the 3-Way-Color-Corrector but less than Color.
Since you cannot share projects between FCP and FCP X, you might want to stay with FCS if you rely on Color.

  • I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6

    Hello,
I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6 of 1920x1080 60p footage.
I transcoded MTS files shot on a Sony NEX FS100 into Apple Pro Res mov files but the
playback stutters in Final Cut and QTime making it impossible to edit. Is this because the files
are just so big the computer is having a problem processing them? If so what should I edit in to preserve the
    best quality?
I am Running Mac OSX 10.6.8
    2x2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Admittedly my FCUT is out of date, I intend to up to X when I finish off an ongoing project.
    Thanks Luci

You might consider running diskwarrior on your drive (alsoft.com).  And run diskutility, repair disk.  A corruption of the drive could cause problems.  Also, drive speed starts to fall sharply as the drive gets full.  Make sure you have a minimum of 10% free space on the drive.  You might also get a utility to check the speed of the drive.  I think Aja has one.
Also, do you have anything else connected to the firewire bus?  If so, try disconnecting it.  You might also try disconnecting ethernet and turning off your airport.  Resetting your fcp preferences couldn't hurt.

  • Is Adobe Lightroom compatible with Mac's Final Cut Pro & iPhoto?

Is Adobe Lightroom compatible with Mac's Final Cut Pro?
I have 27" Mac Pro and I'm a Fine Art Photographer. I need features similar to LR. But I need to know ~ is it is compatible with my Final Cut Pro & iPhoto?

What kind of compatibility are you looking for?

can I download and use final cut pro 7 on new mac pro tower?,or I must work with the new final cut pro x only?

Disclaimer: This response assumes that a "new mac pro tower" is the new cylindrical model.
    1. You cannot download Final Cut Pro 7. FCP7 is part of Final Cut Studio (2009) a.k.a "FCS3" and it was only released on a DVD set. It can still be purchased online (maybe even from Apple) for prices ranging from a few hundred to $1K and it is 5 years old and unsupported.
    2. Although there are reports of systems running FCS3 on Mavericks, there are also a host of problems associated with this OS/software combination.
    3. A new version of iMovie Pro Final Cut Pro X has been released which is reportedly very fast and is supported.
It's all a matter of what kind of movies you make...

  • What is the benefit of "Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility" in QT?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the benefit of "Enabling Final Cut Studio " in Quicktime player?
I'm used to calibrate my monitor to a less bright gamma, suitale for monitoring video content.
So does the +color compatibility option+ can give me more precision when I color correct my movies?
    Michel Boissonneault

It does the same thing. The only difference is that the pref is active only when the QT player is active. So the gamma is not effected in other parts of the system.

  • HV30 24p 30p and Final Cut Pro

Hi I am planning on buying a Canon HV30 in about 2 to 3 weeks.
    I have a MacBook Unibody
    2.4GHz
    1GHz FSB
    4GB Ram
    320 GB HD
500 GB External HD "USB and FireWire"
    Final Cut Studio 2
This is for Family events and fun stuff.
Well since my Mac no longer has FireWire I am buying a MacMini to use to import.
I asked what I should get for specs and now know thanks to "Shake 'n' Bake"
I am going to use the MacMini to Capture my footage directly onto my external HD.
"I will most likely use the mini for other things"
I will edit the captured footage on my MacBook
Question 1: What should the settings be on the HV30?
Question 2: Should I install Just Final Cut Pro onto the Mini for capturing?
    If Yes
Question 3: What capture settings should I use for 24p?
Question 4: What capture settings should I use for 30p?
Question 5: What capture settings should I use for 60i?
Question 6: Should I use ProRes or is the HDV the actual tape format. And which is better?
Question 7: What should the settings be set to on log and capture?
Question 8: How do I convert the 24p to real 24p?
Question 9: How do I convert the 30p to real 30p?

Another thing to bear in mind is that you should not believe automatically what others tell you however qualified they are!
What suits them and their equipment etc. may not be best for you.
You should always test everything yourself.
To test a technique you only need to shoot a minute or so of video, capture it, slap in a couple of transitions and effects and burn to DVD. I keep some re-writable DVDs specifically for testing as I can use them over and over again.
Make sure your minute of video contains static and moving shots together with camera pans.
This is essential to spot problems because a static shot may produce a beautiful result on a DVD whilst a moving one may be full of jitter and judder all caused by your camera setting, editing methods or DVD burning.
A test like I have outlined can go from shooting to DVD in under 15 minutes.
I would suggest testing your camera's interlaced and progressive modes, together with editing raw HDV and Pro-res etc.
This way, in a very short time you will have definitive answers as to which techniques suit you best.

  • Very disappointed with G5 and Final Cut Pro

At work we bought a G5 last year for Final Cut Pro to edit plain DV video downloaded from a MiniDV camcorder via Firewire. The machine has 4gig memory, 6800 graphics, and is running FCP 5.0 with all of the Software Updates installed. The G5 is supposed to replace a much older PC that is running Adobe Premiere 2.0 on Windows XP. Even though the PC only has a single Pentium 4 CPU and older ATI X800 graphics, it does FAR more real-time effects than Final Cut Pro does on the G5. Why is this?? Almost everything I do, from titles to minor effects will appear instantly on Premiere Pro, real-time, no rendering needed. But almost everything I do on the G5 will show me a big red X until it has rendered. If I add a title, I still have to wait for it to render. If I add a light blur effect, I still have to wait for it to render. This is very annyoing and very depressing, we spent a lot of money on the G5. In reality, at least for us, it is slower than the older PC it is supposed to replace forcing us to spend a lot of time staring at those big red X'es while Final Cut Pro renders.
Are we doing something wrong? Or is this the case with all dual processor G5s running Final Cut Pro 5.0?? Is there anything we can do to speed up rendering or enable actual real-time effects/titles?

    Welcome to the family.

Simple failure to understand your new tools. Open the manual, run the tutorials. Study carefully the sections on how to set up all of your preferences for DV. It's easy and when you're done you're going to feel really silly.
If your company intends to make money with FCP you must invest time to understand what you bought since you bought it without bothering to test drive FCP on a G5. If you liked Premiere on Windows, you may never enjoy using FCP on Macintosh. The switch can be devastating. You could be one of those poor souls who just doesn't get it. Turn your system over to a more open minded person on your staff.

  • Major Problem with audio from Final Cut to DVd Studio Pro

I am posting this problem again because no further responses have been received regarding my first post. I purchased an MR-HD100 Firestore device from Focus Enhancements. When I use clips from it alone or with other clips created by digitizing from min DV tape on a sequence or timeline the audio works fine in Final Cut. When I import any type of file and believe me I have been trying all kinds of suggestions and wasting almost a dozen DVDs. Whether it be a Final Cut QT file, going straight to compressor and producing an MPEG-2 file and a dolby audio file .ac3 importing them into DVD SP and making the adjustments that MR. Harbsmeier suggested DIAL NORM at -31dbfs and COMPRESSION MODE to NONE, as well as the suggestion to make an aif file with the audio and importing it into DVD SP as well as the video. I get the same result with every try, the clips made with the firestore are so low you cannot hear them. NOTHING WORKS!!!!. And yes I have tried making a DVD with just digitized footage and yes it turned out fine. I called Apple support today and that gentlemen basically told me I am out of warranty so phone help was not available. However, he made a suggestion of changing sequence presets in Final Cut which has now developed into another problem. I have messed up my settings so bad I don't know where I am I can't LOG & CAPTURE in the manner I used to ???? Could someone please advise as to why this problem exists and the correction to resolve it. I do not understand why the audio works fine playing the sequence on the timeline in Final Cut. It plays fine after making a Final Cut QT file. AND it plays fine in simulation mode in DVD Studio Pro. However after you burn a DVD the audio from the firestore clips are not to be heard unless you crank up the speakers or TV to it's maximum level and you can barely make it out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME Projects are stacking up and was really hoping to go tapeless

Try building the project to your desktop and then open the Video_TS in the Mac DVD player application.
How does it play/sound?  This application is the best way to see and hear how your burned DVD should play vs. just using simulator and burning.
Just to clarify- are you taking your FC QT file into Compressor and creating a MPG-2 and AC3 file or are you bringing your FC QT directly into DSP?
What codec are you exporting from FC? ProRes422, DV, H264?
Open the FC QT in QT and apple+I to see this.
What does it say for audio?

  • What is the best workflow for Final Cut Pro X across multiple computers?

I travel on a team that is in a different location every week, so all of our video editing has to be fairly moble. We have 3 macbook pros and would like to use final cut X on all of them. What would be the best workflow for us all to work on the same project and sync it across the computers? (eg, one of us editing the footage, one editing the sound, one working on visual effects?)

My first question would be how well 5.1 would work with SL. People have reported problems.
As far as cameras are concerned, I would guess most any tape-based camera would work and so much depends on the kind of projects you work on that I wouldn't want to start guessing at your needs.
If you want broad access to tapeless and advanced formats try to locate and purchase an upgrade disk to 6 or 7.
    Good luck.

  • Student Help advice! what is best iMac model for Final Cut Pro and logic pro

    Hi
I am currently looking into getting a iMac, but is toggling to device if I need a 27inch or a 21inch(top model),which will be used for Final Cut Pro and logic
There is a lot of money being invested iMac, and I really not want to be stu k with a computer that not going to keep up with the amount of work load in the future.
The specs that I have on mine are..
    21inch
    Upgrades include
    Sdd drive 512gb
    Intel core i7
    16gb of ram
    Or
    27 inch
    Upgrades
    Fusion drive or sdd 250gb
    Intel core i7
    (Possible graphic card) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5 [+ £105.60]
(Ram is way to expensive so will buy from second party)
Anyone who has brought a iMac for final cut or logic what would you likely buy?..Am really stuck on the hard drives between the 27inch fusion and 512gb on the 21inch
    My budget is £1900
My fear is that the 21inch top model's graphic card may not be good enough for advance editing on Final Cut Pro In the future when I start to get more deep into editing..logic really only needs 8gb to run smoothly..buts its the final cut specs that am having problems deciding. I know iMacs are not future proof or technology lasts for that matter, but I do expect to have it run good for a number of years before I upgrade again.
If anyone can give me some advice, or even tell me about there set up they have for media work please let me know.

All kinds of things affect system & HD performance, I can't tell you why your 4 year old Mac is slow.  Just because your old Mac is slow doesn't mean that a new iMac will be equally slow.
You are correct about the issue with the smaller fusion drives.  It's one of the reasons I am not high on recommending them.  Everyone thinks they want power & performance but don't understand the gap between marketing and real life performance.  The 1TB fusion drive however should give you a good combination of rapid access and sizeable storage capacity.
I have used external FW800 / 7200rpm drives for years and have never had a problem with any of them.  I consider them very reliable but admittedly I DO NOT use consumer drives like the WD MyBook that the big-box stores sell.   For the most part I assemble my own with OWC Mercury Elite enclosures.  In the past few years I have centered on WD Caviar Black and WD Scorpio Black drives.  I also have some Seagate Barracuda 7200.xx drives.  They all perform excellently and reliably.
Pls. refer to my earlier post for what i recommended to you.
