What to do with a 2nd SSD?

My current system SSD barely holds Windows 7 and programs with just 18 GB free. I have another 120 GB SSD sitting around not being used. I'll eventually build another system, but in the meantime wondering if it is a good idea to install it - maybe use it for pagefile and/or programs to free up the system drive.
The Sandy Bridge motherboard currently has an open 6 Gb/s port (Marvell) System drive is on the other Marvell port. I have a pair of RAID 0 drives on the Intel 6Gb/s ports and two on the 3Gb/s ports.
I have plenty of storage on two RAID arrays.

>message every bootup that a temporary pagefile has been placed on the system drive
I do not have that message, so my GUESS is that you did not redirect your page file according to Microsoft's instructions
There are settings in Premiere Pro (and, I think, Encore) to put the working files on a drive other than boot... otherwise the default is on the boot drive
I have all of my projects and PPro temp files on my 2nd hard drive (with page file) and all media on my 3rd hard drive

  • @ds store - what to do with an 'old' SSD?

    OK, I asked for you specifically because you always point out that there's no reason to zero out a SSD... so here's my quandry.
    I'm saving my pennies for the new Crucial M500 960GB SSD - plan to get it right when they ship. I'm already making my purchases for my clone upgrades, but I'm wondering what to do with my old Crucial m4 512GB SSD? I know that I can't securely erase it and I know that I'll likely have no use for it in the future (unless I stick it in a new Mac Pro - which I doubt that I will be able to afford, anyway).
    So what do I do with it? Put it in my safety deposit box? Go after it with a sledgehammer? What?
    Looking forward to your suggestions...

    There are many valid reasons to zero fill a SSD to delete unwanted data.
    You can't fill zero's on a SSD like you can do on a hard drive, Disk Utility won't allow it.
    SSD's have limted write capability, thus that option is disabled by Apple, which I think they should have kept the option but with a warning and set limit of scrubs instead.

    Put it into a external enclosure (Thunderbolt preferred for the speed if your going to keep it) and then format it and fill it full, reformat and fill it 50%, delete and fill it 50% again to hopefully overwrite the old data and defeat the wear leveling/TRIM.
    No guarranty this will ensure complete data destruction, if your really concerned, melt the thing in a fire outside, grind it up in one of those Tom Dickson Extreme Blenders also outside because of the toxic fumes/dust.
    Until the Department of Defense comes out with some guidelines  to pernamently delete data off a SSD or Flash drive, I would destroy the thing if your seriously concerned.

  • What's wrong with my 2nd generation ipod touch?

    Recently my ipod has been messing up alot. A couple of months ago the sound was not working at all, I couldn't play music, or vidoes, everytime I would press on a song it would just go back to the music menu and it was completely mute. I restored it 5 times and nothing worked, finally I decided to turn it off and on and it worked. Everytime it would die i'd have to keep turning it off and on for it to work. Then one day the sound just stopped again. I tried turning it off and on and nothing. Then i restored it and the sound came back on and everything worked again. Also whenever i plug in my headphones some of the sound still plays through the ipod speakers, and I know it's not my headphone because they work perfectly fine when plugged into anything else. Also everytime I update it, it gets stuck on the connect to itunes menu and I have to restore it. Any suggestions at to why my ipod touch is so messed up? Is anybody else having these weird problems? I haven't dropped it in any water at all and I haven't dropped it in a long time plus it has a cover. Thank you so much.

    First of all, as for your sound, based on your description, I am pretty sure your headphone jack is broken and not working. Restoring your iPod Touch and rebooted it only fixes the technical issues and not the hardware issues. Sounds like some sort of damage internally on your iPod Touch. Take it to your closes Apple store and let them take a look at it. I suggest that this is your best bet because your OS (operating system) on your iPod cannot work with your hardware issues.

  • What are the software issues with installing a 2nd SSD on my mac mini (Late 2012?)

    Hi Everyone,
    I've just bought a brand new Mac Mini server - 2.6GHz, with a 256GB SSD.
    I have also bought a 512GB SSD from Crucial, along with a Dual Drive Install Kit from OWC, and will probably be installing it myself.
    I've read a lot of info on various forums/websites that is a little concerning.....regarding data loss when you reboot the Mac having installed the new SSD (not sure if this just applies to adding the SSD to a system that contains a 'normal' HDD.....)
    If I'm going to have 2 SSDs in my system, I guess there are 2 questions:
    1. Can I just add the new 512GB SSD without any reboot issues
    2. Is it important to keep the system SSD physically where it is, i.e. at the bottom of the Mac (and plugged into the same connection on the logicboard?)
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Thank you so much John and woodmeister50, most helpful
    Just one more thing - the crucial drive came with a data transfer cable (SATA to USB) - I haven't got my dual drive install kit through the post yet...so do you foresee any problems with me installing the software that I will be using on the 512GB drive, in preparation for it being internally installed - is that possible to do with this cable?
    Thanks again people!

  • My 2nd mini iPad in a year and same problem happened,it stopped working. what's wrong with mini iPads?!

    I got a replacement to my daughter’s iPad mini in September b/c her 1st one stopped working and now it happened again. I took it to the Apple store and  i was told that there's  nothing they can do. What's wrong with the iPad minis?

    I have an iPad mini and it works great, so do many other people.
    Is it possible your daughter abused the device?   If it gets dropped, even in a damage proof case, it is a shock to the iPad.   Most survive, but if it happens often, it might be a problem.
    Charging often, not completely, leaving in charger while in use a lot?
    Leaving the iPad in a hot car, or freezing the iPad?

  • 2nd Time Capsule - What to do with it?

    Hi All,
    I have 2 Time Capsules, both 2TB. One new design, one old.
    For backup I only need one of them, so I wonder what to do with the second one. Setup as a Network drive?
    In addition I have an MBP Mid 09, ATV3 and Iphone, if this produces any additional ideas.
    I might just sell one of them, but maybe there is a usage I haven´t thought of yet, so please share your ideas.
    Thanks
    V

    Off hand.....a few options
    Use the second Time Capsule to extend a wireless network wirelessly, providing more wireless signal coverage to a remote area. The Time Capsule could still be used for backups or storage if you want in this type of setup.
    Connect the second Time Capsule to the first using a spare Ethernet cable and set up dual Time Machine backups. Time Machine will alternate back ups between the two Time Capsules automatically. So, you will have two sets of Time Machine backups in case one drive fails.
    You could also use wireless for Time Machine backups as in the first example. Your remote Time Capsule is hidden.....unfortunately a robbery occurs and your main Time Capsule is stolen along with other equipment. You still have your backups on the remote Time Capsule that you can use to restore your data.
    Some of us who are concerned about the possibility of losing our data also keep a separate backup offsite. You never know. Fires and floods do occur.
    Or, if you have no worries about loss of data on the first Time Capsule, use the second Time Capsule as an extra storage drive for data that you want to share to other users over the network.
    If none of these ideas sound useful, and you are sure that you might not ever need a second backup....in case the first TC fails......and you really don't need the second Time Capsule, I would be happy to take if off your hands at no charge.

  • I have replaced my old hard drive with a new SSD drive. Can I restore a complete Time Machine backup

    I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
    Questions that I would like to get answered.
    1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
    2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
    3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
    I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
    1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
    2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
    3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
    4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
    6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
    7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
    8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
    9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
    10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
    Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
    1) Again powered off the machine.
    2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
    3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
    4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
    5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
    7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
    8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
    9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
    10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
    11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.
    Moral of the story - It is the spirit that counts.

  • I am about to buy a 13" MacBook Pro with 256 GB SSD drive.  I want a i am about to buy a MacBook Pro Windows partition set up.  How large should it be, and can I use XP Pro or does it need to be Win 7 or 8?

    I am about to buy a 13" MacBook Pro with 256 GB SSD.  I want a Windows partition set up.  What size should it be, and can I load Win XP Pro or does it need to be Win 7 or 8?

    You can use XP but it has to be in a Virtual Machine and OS X as the host instead of as a dual boot system with XP in its own partition. That is how I run Windows on my Mac, in a Virtual Machine.
    Take a look at VritualBox from Oracle. It's free and works very well.

  • Using a DataRelation with a 2nd DataRelation

    Standard example.  Create a DataSet with 2 related tables, define a DataRealtion, and bind them to 2 dataGridViews.  As you walk the first grid view, the 2nd one shows the related rows.
       DataRelation customerDataRelation = new DataRelation("UsefulRelation",
            customerDataSet.Tables["Customers"].Columns["CustomerID"],
            customerDataSet.Tables["Orders"].Columns["CustomerID"]);
      customerDataSet.Relations.Add(customerDataRelation);
    then display with
     dataGridViewOrderID.DataSource = customerDataSet;
     dataGridViewOrderID.DataMember = "Customers";
                //use data binding with the datagrid view
     orderLinesdataGridView.DataSource = customerDataSet;
     orderLinesdataGridView.DataMember = "Customers.UsefulRelation";
    Works nice.
    Now I want to add a 3rd datagridview, and a second DataRelation, so that the first view shows the customer, the second shows the order, but when I click on one of the orders in the 2nd grid view, the 3rd one shows the order detail.
    So, a table linked to a 2nd table linked to a 3rd table using 2 DataRelations, and then have the datagridviews do the right thing.
    Is this possible?
    with this 2nd DataRelation
     DataRelation productDataRelation = new DataRelation("productDataRelation",
           customerDataSet.Tables["Orders"].Columns["OrderID"],
          customerDataSet.Tables["OrderDetails"].Columns["OrderID"]);
     customerDataSet.Relations.Add(productDataRelation);
    and this added gui code for the 3rd datagridview
     dataGridViewProductDetail.DataSource = customerDataSet;
     dataGridViewProductDetail.DataMember = "Orders.productDataRelation";
    the 3rd datagridview shows one set of values, but will not update.
    thanks

    the 3rd datagridview shows one set of values, but will not update.
    ... and what do you mean by "will not update"? That's a little ambiguous.

    Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
    Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iOS device connect before?
    Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
    Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Could it be this:
    iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
    One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
    Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
    Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
    Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
    If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • MacBook hard drive is full again. Replaced original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive about 18 mo. ago, but my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  13in. Alum. Late 2008 MacBook

    My MacBook hard drive is full again. I have a 13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, and about 18 months ago (in October 2013), I replaced the original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive. However, my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  When I check "System Information," under "Storage," it states the following:  Audio 52.02 GB; Movies 33.68GB; Photos 43.13GB; Apps 14.76 GB; Backups 174.4 MB; and Other 96.39GB.
    Also, at home, I have an Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB that I use as my wireless router, and I also use it for automatic backup via Time Machine.  And when I first purchased Time Capsule, the first time I connected Time Capsule, Time Machine asked if I would like to use it to back up my files, and I clicked, "Use as Backup Disk."  And that's really all I've ever done with Time Capsule.
    In addition, I also have a LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive.  I have copied my MacBook's hard drive onto my LaCie external hard drive.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?  Obviously the Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps are taking up a lot of space... Any suggestions re: what I can do with Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps?  And what about the Other?  Other is taking up 96.39 GB. What is Other, and what can I do about it?
    And what about partitioning my hard drive... Is that something I should do?  Should I partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently?  And should I partition, or configure, my external hard drive?  And if I need to partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently, how do I setup Time Machine to backup per any such changes?  Same thing for my external hard drive?
    13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, 250 GB (with upgraded Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive)
    Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.9.5
    plus
    Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB
    LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive
    Thank you for your help.

    Partitioning makes no sense. You have a drawer full of stuff. Split it into two smaller drawers and you have two smaller drawers full of stuff.
    Decide what you can store on external storage - your iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom libraries can all be stored on externals, as can your iTunes Libraries and so on. Do you need to carry 30 gigs of movies with you all the time? You  can get portable drives the size of an iPhone these days.

  • Do I have all the parts to replace my HDD with a new SSD on my Macbook (late 2008)?

    Hey everyone, I am trying to figure out if have all the parts to replace my hdd with a new ssd on my macbook (late 2008 aluminum).
    I just bought a crucial mx100 SSD and plan on replacing my mac HDD. I have the appropriate screwdrivers, and a bootable OSX on a usb drive. I also purchased a sabrent usb 2.0 to sata/ide hard drive adapter.
    How do I replace and install OSX on my new SSD?
    From what I read here are the steps I'm planning on taking.
    1) Detach the old HDD
    2) Attach new SSD.
    3) Turn on computer and use the bootable usb drive to install OS X.
    Does that work, I think I read somewhere about maybe formatting the SSD before I can use the bootable usb. Any input or help would be awesome. Thanks.
    I'd prefer to do a clean install of yosemite and not carbon copy my old HDD

  • I purchased standalone LR5 in December 2014 and installed on home computer.  I have a mobile home with a 2nd laptop and installed       on this one also.  However, I now get a message saying that the Develop module is disabled and I need to renew membersh

    Can anyone help me understand why the Develop module on my 2nd laptop is disabled and asking me to renew membership to reactive.  I have a standalone LR5 which I purchased in December 2014 on the Windows platform.  My 2nd laptop is in a different location to my home laptop and is in my holiday home where I would like to work on my photos when I am away from home.

    thanks for replying.  I purchased online from Adobe and they sent a confirmation email with order number and serial no along with the instructions for downloading. There was no indication at purchase that renewing membership was needed at any time and it's only 3 months since purchase. I have just returned home from my holiday home and checked my home laptop (primary and first installation) and all modules still enabled !!  As far as I understand I am able to install twice as long as not operating both at once. This would be impossible as holiday home with laptop no 2 is 60 miles away. When I installed on no 2, i opened the order email and was able to use the serial no again. Now however it is greyed out. I don't want the cloud version and hope this is not what I have.
    UPDATE 1 April 2015-   I have checked the system info in Lightroom on my first laptop installation (home) and it is definitely a perpetual licence.  I downloaded what I thought was my 2nd allowed download on my holiday home laptop using the original email instructions and serial number.  I checked the system info on this download and it was it is a cloud version!!!!  This doesn't make sense - anyone out there - can I download to 2 laptops in 2 different locations with a perpetual licence??

  • Using linksys wired router with AE 2nd generation

    Hi. I'm trying to use a linksys befsr41 (non-wireless 4 port router) with a 2nd generation airport express. I have several wired rooms that I want to setup separate networks with other AE's. My configuration is:  cable box-->AE WAN in--AE LAN out-->Linksys-->ethernet cable through the house—>AE WAN in rooms. Can’t seem to make this work. I can do it wirelessly (i.e having the remote AE's joing the first AE network) but several of the rooms have poor signal. As soon as I try and create a new network the remote AE’s can’t connect to the network. I checked the cables and they are all good.
    Thanks.

    We need some additional information to be able to troubleshoot this issue.
    Can you provide the make and model number of the cable modem that you are using?
    Are the other AirPort Express devices that you are trying to connect also 2nd Gen versions?  If not, what version are they?
    The Linksys router needs to be configured to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will function as if it were an Ethernet switch.....not a router.  Is the Linksys set up in Bridge Mode at the current time?
    Looking at the Linksys support forum....example below......I cannot tell whether it is possible to configure the Linksys product in Bridge Mode:
    https://community.linksys.com/t5/Wired-Routers/Use-BEFSR41-in-Bridged-Mode/td-p/ 272061
    Are you trying to configure the AirPorts using AirPort Utility on a Mac....or on an iPhone / iPad?  If you are using a Mac, what operating system is the Mac running?  If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X  version that you see there.
