What to do with a i586 processor
Hello, I got a Gecko Edubook: www.norhtec.com/products/gecko/
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a lazy person, and therefore I love arch linux. Although arch doesn't run on i586. What would you suggest being the easiest way to get this thing up and going, with a basic install featuring like nothing. I love EVERYTHING with arch linux, except for that it doesn't run on i586. I've tried arch for i586, but the project seemed kinda dead, and I gave up. I won't use it for anything else than webbrowsing (uzbl), mplayer, if the graphics can do that, wireless, and terminal programs.
What would you suggest:
Get gentoo on it, either compiling on it or crosscompiling? I don't need to be very up to date, so I won't need to recompile every day.
Get arch i586 working, and compile everything. Crosscompiling?
Get ubuntu/whatever on it, and remove as much as I can without breaking it.
LFS?
I got the computer with ubuntu/wattos and managed to bork X, apt-get, /var and with /var nethack. I use it for school atm, but cannot do much else than edit stuff in vim. Not that I need much more atm, but I will go to paris by bus the 4th, and it would be cool if I could use it for a little more by then. I don't have very much experience with anything else than arch, so it better be well-documented. (Arch is getting me spoiled )
/500 post, yay!

From the edubook website:
The Edubook will run Windows XP and many x86 Linux Distributions. We have brought up several Linux Distributions to the Edubook, to include, Ubuntu 8.04, Ubuntu Remix, Debian 5, Puppy Linux 4.12, Edubuntu, Zen and many others. We are currently shipping the Edubook with WattOS. WattOS is a fast and efficient Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 9.04.
And out of curiosity where can you buy an edubook? I never bought a netbook before but I find this interesting.
A google search for "edubook" yields...
http://www.norhtec.com/products/gecko/index.html (There's an "Order Now" link at the bottom)
Oh, and regarding the topic, I'll second the recommendations for Debian. It seems to be ideal as a solid and mostly nonbloated distro which will run on nearly anything.

I Mini with an i7 processor. I would like to use Boot Camp to install windows based CAD software on my MAC. Would it be better to use a plugin external hard drive to load my software on and if so what hard drive would you recommend?
Thank you for your quick response. I can then use a ZIP drive for data storage. I want to keep as much of my hard drive free of data as possible.

The system requirements for the current flashplayer is a 2.33 Ghz CPU, I have an older xp system with a P4 processor running 1.6 Ghz? What version of flash should I be running? I am using both IE and Firefox (various versions).
Hello,
Welcome to Adobe Forums.
You can download older version of Adobe Flash Player (10.2 or 10.1) from Flash Player Archive (http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html)

What's Wrong with My Computer?
I have a G5 desktop computer, I believe it's referred to as a "Power Mac." My mom purchased it some years ago, I think in late 2005 shortly after this particular model was on the market.
Info is:
Version 10.5.8
Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive 240 GB (127 GB unused/available)
My mother wasn't using this computer for many years, and my 13" Macbook was giving me trouble, so she gave this one to me. It's all been great (she maxed out the memory and hard drive space when she bought it, even though it is outdated and insignificant compared to current models), except for one little thing... Browsing the internet is usually fine when it's only one window, but not always. However, it is almost a guarantee that while trying to operate multiple windows and trying to play a video, Safari will crash. And not just once in awhile. I'm talking about on a daily basis. During regular offline computer use, like Photoshop or iTunes, the computer will sometimes grey over (as if someone put a fairly thick grey film over the entire screen), and tell me I have to restart the computer. So what's wrong with it? I presume it is a physical issue (failing memory, mother board, etc.), but what?Your computer is not remotely "maxed out" with RAM.
You're describing a G5 Quad like mine (though mine was built in June of 2006), and maxed out means having 16 GB of RAM installed, like mine has.

That's called a Kernel Panic, and, yes, it is most often caused by hardware problems, such as bad RAM or mismatched RAM. I can't imagine how you get to 4.5 GB of RAM without exponentially increasing the risk of mismatched RAM.
RAM has to be installed in matched pairs, starting from the center slots and spreading outward: 4*3*2*1*1*2*3*4
On the other hand, my own personal experience has led me to conclude that Safari is a piece of cr@p. It causes problems just being active in the background, causing other applications to fail.
Check your RAM carefully, starting with just one pair of matched RAM sticks in the two center slots, then adding one pair at a time. Check your hard disk with Apple's Disk Utility.
The kernel panics can be caused by a damaged directory too, so if you own Disk Warrior, run it. If you don't own DiskWarrior, at least Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility and use Verify Disk/Repair Disk with it.
I'd also recommend downloading and installing Applejack and run it according to the instructions.
Good luck.

So I am not sure what is going on?
Anyone have similar situation?
what did u do to get Safari working again for you?
thanksIf you're running 19.7.4, then you're installation is hosed. Safari 5.1.7 is what ships with that version. If you failed to save the ill-designed installer, then you'll have to waste resources installing again (necessitates DLing the entire 3.6+ GB monstrosity).

What is wrong with my MacbookPro?
My computer is a MacbookPro that I bought in 2010.
About a month and a half ago I started to experience my computer randomly flashing white with a click and then the screen turning black. When I would hit the power key to turn it back on, it would chime, display white, then flash off again. After a few tries, it would eventually restart and turn on after holding down the power key for some time. After about a week of this, my "service battery!" sign came on, and my computer began to not hold a charge at all.
I brought it to the Apple store after my battery literally exploded and blew out the bottom of my laptop (leaving a dent in the bottom). For about a month now, with my new battery, my computer has been fine.
Now, about a month after getting the new battery (and after just recently downloading OS X Yosemite 10.10), my computer is starting to flash white again. I am hoping that I did not receive a faulty battery, but even if I did, would it work for an entire month with no problems and now just begin to fail again? My computer says it is holding a charge. Sometimes it flashes off with a fully charged battery.
The times it flashes off are when I am away from it for more than about 15 minutes, I comes back, put my finger on the mouse, it comes to life seeming fine, and then immediately flashes white and shuts off.
What is wrong with my MacbookPro?I think the battery issue and the screen flashes are unrelated. The 2010 MacBook Pro is notorious for its failing graphics processor: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support

What's up with iTunes for Windows 7 64 bit? So slow and draggy. Makes my high end PC with multi-core processor and video card run like a 286. Even did this after doing a fresh install of the operating system with the latest version of iTunes.
No other software does this on my machine. There has to be some crazy issue causing this.Try this,
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now. -
Dear Apple Support Communities,
What's wrong with my macbook white battery? it is like opened on the other side, like lack of glue.

What to do with a dead PowerMac
I was hoping for a simple fix or worst case scenario, a dead Power Supply, which I could have replaced. Sadly, the Logic Board is shot in my old PowerMac G5.
Does anyone know if G5 logic boards are still available and how much they are. I imagine they push $500+ so probably aren't worth the trouble. If it was like $70 I'd consider giving it a shot.
If not, I'm hoping it's still worth something for parts. Has anyone had any experience on this subject? Is there anywhere to go to get a little money for my Mac. The powersupply, fans, processors, case, etc are all good. I feel like the case alone could be worth something to someone. I can imagine all sorts of neat art projects you could do with them. The apple store guy suggested turning it into an industrial fish tank. If nothing else, the scrap metal should be worth something (40lbs of alluminum I think).
Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. I find it hard to believe that it's worthless. I just have no idea what to do with it. I could try to sell it on ebay or something like that, but I wouldn't know what's a fair price and the shipping would probably be rediculous.
Thanks!Suggest you join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap
You could sell the G5's usable parts or possibly buy what you need.

What is wrong with icloud mail and how do I fix it?
What is wrong with icloud mail and how do I fix it?
I put the icloud mail login address in the browser, it brings up the login screen.
I put the login details in correctly, it says icloud has stopped responding, I always send to Apple.
It restarts and I get the right screen, below, but all of the icons are blurred out. If you hover over them they sometimes indicate what they are but won’t let me launch them.
I am using an Advent Laptop with a Celeron processor with Windows 7 and the browser is Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7. (I know I am expecting a lot of it). All of my software is up to date.
Any ideas? I a not very techy but I'm not afraid to have a go...it communit question. Thanks fr your help.Hello, Fightlikeaninja.

what's up with the screw job on the Airplay mirroring? Macbook Pro (mid 2010) too old to have feature included in Mountain upgrade? Bull!
Please read:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/mountain-lion-airplay-mirroring-v-airparrot -fight/
Mountain Lion's integrated AirPlay mirroring support only works with the following Mac models:
iMac—Mid 2011 or newer
Mac mini—Mid 2011 or newer
MacBook Air—Mid 2011 or newer
MacBook Pro—Early 2011 or newer
If your Mac isn't on that list, your won't ever see an AirPlay option in Mountain Lion's menubar.
What separates these Macs from other Mountain Lion-compatible machines is that these are the only models that have support for Intel's QuickSync technology. What confirmed this requirement for me was the fact that my Retina MacBook Pro switched to integrated Intel HD4000 graphics even when otherwise running on the discrete NVIDIA GT 650M GPU. No matter what you are doing or what resolution you are running, AirPlay Mirroring in Mountain Lion requires an integrated Intel HD3000 or HD4000 graphics processor and its QuickSync technology to work, full stop. -
Oracle Universal Installer doesn't start on Windows2000 prof. with P-4 processor
Hi all,
the problem is that when I try to install Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 EE on my computer with P-4 processor with OS WIndows2000 simply nothing happens. The installation process just starts up end exits after several seconds without any error messages.
Earlier I succefully installed the same program on the Windows2000 with P-3 processor. Have anybody encountered already such problem?
thanks for any help, IgorThank you very much. Finally some good advice that works.
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Joseph Conti ([email protected]):
I had the same problem, here is what worked for me and why.
The root of the problem the that older versions of the 1.1.x jdk don't function properly on a P4. See:
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/download-jdk-windows.html
Notice they indicate there was a problem running Java 1.1.x on Pentium 4 machines and that JDK 1.1.8_008 has a fix for it.
The problem is specifically with a file named SYMCJIT.DLL although this isn't clear from reading the java site. The 8i installer includes this file twice, search for it. The version provided with the Orcale installer is older then the one provided with JDK 1.1.8_008 even though if you inspect the properties of these various files they all appear to be the same.
Download the JDK 1.1.8_008, find this file and replace the installer versions with it and all should be well!

Any Intel CPU that Apple ships or has shipped. What do you expect? 80286?
If you asked for a recommendation: i7 with 8 cores works great. -
What's involved with upgrading to Final Cut Express HD?
I was just wondering what is involved with upgrading to High Definition. My current computer is a PowerBook G4 and I did not know if this would support the HD. What percentage of users are still using the regular and what percent have upgraded to HD.
I figured that when I buy a new Mac I would upgrade the HD, but until that point I'd stick with the regular resolution. I would need to buy a new HD video camera too.
Thanks for any thoughts!Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD (3.0 and 3.5) is not only for HD editing, it's the new name for Final Cut Express since version 3.0, and you can edit in HDV or SD with the same product.
HDV is pretty demanding on computer power, RAM and storage.
Altough a G4 1,0 GHz meets the minimun requirements to do HDV, pay attention to video card itself. See spec section for FCE HD:
"Macintosh computer with 500MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 (550MHz for PowerBook G4) or Intel Core Duo
512MB RAM
Display with 1024-by-768 (or higher) resolution
An AGP or PCI Express graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme or an Intel GMA integrated graphics processor in MacBook or Mac mini
Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
QuickTime 7.0.4 or later
HDV features require 1GHz or faster processor and 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended)
500MB disk space required for applications; additional 16GB of additional storage space for Soundtrack and LiveType content (can be installed on separate disks)
DVD drive for software installation"
A big monitor is also a good idea (kind of one to one pixel at displaying video:the 23" Apple cinema HD display 1920 X 1200 pixels or greater).
Think about an external hard drive to store your captured media.
In the camcorders line-up, it's better to choose a tape recording based one (no hard disk, nor DVD nor media card recorder), because FCE HD allows capture directly from a such camcorder (altough it's possible to download from other sources and convert your material to something that FCE can handles without rendering. A 3 CDD one is better (I own the fabulous FX-1). Many HDV camcorders allows down conversion directly from capturing process: so we can edit in SD format with the same material.
Currently, HDV can be edited on FCE HD, but you will have to print to tape your edited HDV content to keep it in HDV format. You cannot burn HDV or blue-ray DVD ( aka high definition DVD) from iDVD 6 and watch it on a HD TV set.
There are some HD DVD burners around the corner ($$$ to buy and blank DVDs are not cheap) but the choice of software is very limited.
HDV is simply ashtoning to watch on HD tv set and it's the future.
I think you can count on an instant 200$ rebate if you buy a new mac and FCE HD on apple store:

Good luck.

Can the new MacBook Air 13" with the i3 processor run Adobe Connect?
I need a new computer for college this fall. I really am leaning towards the MacBook Air, 13" model with the i3 Processor and an upgrade to 8 GB ram. Will this (w/ a 1.3GHz Processor) run Adobe Connect? It says it requires 1.83GHz for Mac. So is it not fast enough? Should I just get the pro? :/
Here is the site on Adobe...

Any help is appreciated. :)I agree that the Retina display is only truly useful for photographers, etc; but as someone who owns a 13 inch Retina MBP and had a 13 inch MBA, I wouldn't necessarily clssify the non-Retina machines as "better". The difference in display quality is quite noticeable, I like it, and I've never had a problem running non-optimized websites or apps on the machine and I'm fussy about displays. Maybe that's because I've left it running at default settings.
It really all depends on where you want to put your bucks. In general, you can get slightly better performance for the same money with a non-Retina machine.
That said, if you're looking at benchmarks and using Geekbench, a 1.3 i5 2013 MBA comes out at 5940-5950; my 2012 2.5 i5 Retina benches out at 6777, so it's slightly faster but not remarkably so. The 2013 1.7 i7 MBA will match up with it and even exceed it a bit, at least until the Retinas are upgraded with Haswell later. I suspect they'll be faster, though it depends on what chips Apple uses and how much battery life they want to trade off for it. Also, you are using some graphics power with the Retina just to process the display, and the newer Intel graphics GPU's are generally stronger than the 4000 series in the current Retina, so that's a littl bit of the trade off you'd make.
The newer models have a faster disk access system and 8011.ac wireless though the latter is problematic at the moment and it will take some time for Apple to fix that. You'll also not be able to take too much advantage of the faster wirelss speeds immediately unless you buy a new (8011.ac) router; it will take a few years before the rest of the world catches up to the new standard. The 13 Retina MBP has an extra Thunderbolt port..which I routinely use..and an HDMI slot not present on the MBA.
Just do your homework, consider all your needs, and get what serves you best.
