WHAT to do with a perfectly good G5 tower in 2010???

I have an older Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5 (4.5GB SDRAM & 1TB HD) & was wondering what it might be good for now that i've upgraded to a MacPro?
Been a great computer though it has had relatively light use...
tia for any suggestions

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
You could make it into a media center.
Connect it to your stereo through the optical audio out and enjoy your music without having to change CD's.
Connect it to your TV with a DVI to HDMI cable and enjoy movies from your library on your hard drive.
The movies sound can then be enjoyed on your stereo speakers.....
Other than that, set it up to backup files to from your MP using an ethernet network.
If networked, you could load video rendering onto the G5 and keep working on other projects with the MP without hindrance.
Another use could be as a base station for a security network to record video from surveillance cameras to hard drive.

  • What's up with the Caldigit HD One tower?

Looking to go Raid 5 and stumbled across this today.
    http://www.caldigit.com/HDOne/
It looks like the same specs as the Caldigit HD pro, just smaller and cheaper. Anyone see this one at NAB? I'm strongly leaning towards buying this when it comes out, because it looks to be the cheapest 8 bay raid 5 solution on the market. The 2 Terabyte model is going for $2,300.

I consult for CalDigit, and use their products, so let me take a crack at this. I will be getting the HDOne very soon myself.
    Differences:
Controller cache: The HDPro comes with 256MB of controller cache...upgradable to 2GB. The HDOne is 256MB only...not upgradable. What that means is that with more memory in the controller cache, the seek times remain high even when the unit starts to fill up with data. Typically the fuller the drives, the slower the read/write. Having controller cache eases the burden by keeping information about what is stored on the drive in RAM...thus making seek times faster. VERY good when dealing with 2K footage and your drives are full. Keeps the speeds fast.
HDPro has a Cache Battery Backup...so if you lose power to the unit, the cache retains the data for a period of time..meaning it doesn't need to rebuild that information. The HDOne lacks this.
HDPro has options for TWO power control units...load sharing, meaning each takes on half the power load. And if one fails, then the other can take the full brunt. This ships as an option on the HDPRO. The HD One ships with one power control unit only.
The HD Pro was designed for the HIGH END guys working with 4:4:4 HD and 2K. So that the speeds you get with the unit empty are the same you get with the unit full, and built in redundancy across the board. The HDOne is pared down for the guys like me who work with compressed HD like DVCPRO HD, and don't need the huge read write speeds to remain so high.

HD Pro is hot swappable, meaning you can unmount the drives, and with the unit powered up, remove the drives without an issue. With the HD One, you should first power down the unit, then remove the drives.

  • What can I do with perfectly good Graphite Base Station?

I have a Graphite Base Station that works perfectly fine, never a problem. Except, In order to print from upstairs via my iBook or the upstairs desktop, I have to yell downstairs "Wake up the office Computer!"
I'll enjoy the idea of 'better' security that the Extreme offers but I'm wondering..... what I can do with a perfectly good Graphite BS? My understanding is that I cannot use it as a bridge, so are there any creative uses for a Graphite BS or should I just pack it back in the box and list it on eBay?

    Stephanie,
A true dilemna. And a simple technical issue, to which there are 4 simple answers. Can't say I can help choosing one.
    1. Reconfigure the iMac G5 energy saver (assuming iMacG5 is office computer, rather than upstairs desktop) to put the display to sleep, and the disks too, but keep the computer awake. Not sure of the energy consumption required for that, or if it's noisy. My PMG4 MDD "Windtunnel" sounds like a 737 at 100 paces, so this isn't an option I use.
    2. AirPort Express, just for the printer. Slightly cheaper than the AEBS, but you get printing without the iMacG5 in the loop. It doesn't even have to be in the same room as the iMacG5.
    3. A new printer for upstairs. Maybe the cheapest option of all.
    4. The AEBS. You should also see a 5x increase in the intra-Mac file transfers - depends on the AirPort card in the iBook and the wireless card in the desktop computer. Could be sentimental about the Graphite Base Station (Apple users tend to be like that) and keep such a thing of beauty, or sell it for sweetie money.
Now I only have one question, which I'm sure someone else can handle. Can the AEBS (or AirPort Express) turn on the printer from it's sleep mode, just like the Mac can ? We can sort of assume that it can, but I'd prefer if some said "it does for me".

to comprehend the time obligations as a molar pattern.
    thx,

I use Week Cal on the iPod.  I think it was only $1.99.  It is a lot better and does a lot more than the one that came with the Palm Pilot.
As you know, unlike the Palm Pilot, the iPod does not come with a desktop application that you can sync your iPod calendar to.  Since I don't use Outlook, I have to use a Cloud based calendar to sync with my PC.  I use Hotmail's calendar for that.  (If your computer is a MAC, you can use iCal)

  • HT2105 When you get a apple receipt for itunes songs and you paid with a itunes gift card do they charge you or give you store credit what's store credit is it good or bad or does it charge you if you have a free account with no credit cards at all is it

When you get a apple receipt for itunes songs and you paid with a itunes gift card do they charge you or give you store credit what's store credit is it good or bad or does it charge you if you have a free account with no credit cards at all is it bad?

iTunes credits are, for example, if you download a song from the store and it's found to be corrupt - if the track can't be fixed then iTunes support will tend to give you a song credit for a free download.
When you purchase music from the store then any credits that you have will be used first, then any balance that you have (e.g. from iTunes gift cards or allowances), and any remaining amount will be taken from your credit card.

  • HT1595 It takes literally hours to load a move and I have good wireless signal...what's up with that?

It is taking literally hours for movies to load on Apple TV using both NETFLIX and iTunes.  I have a strong wifi signal and according to the connection test, all is well.  What's up with that?

Wifi signal and connection test don't really give a good indication of where things are at
Check speedtest.net to see actual connection speed, needs at least 6mbps consistently for instant HD stream
Check istumbler.net or netstumbler to verify interference
Male sure you are on the ISPs DNS (settings - network - configure DNS - automatic)

On my iPod touch why does it only allow one earphone to play? I've plugged the ear phone kno another device and they worked perfectly fine what is wrong with my iPod

    - Try inserting and removing the headphone plug a dozen or so times.
    - Next try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem, like a bad headphone jack.

I have a recently acquired iphone 4s and despite having good hearing and the volume up to max can barely hear who ever I am speaking to. WHat is wrong with the phone?

The plastic cover was removed before I left the store and I have moved the volume up and down during, before and after phone calls. Have tried it in protective case and out of it. Impossible to hear calls unless phone is on speaker. There seems to be lots of comments re this. Is it a significant flaw? Can I fix it?

  • What to do with old 30GB hard drive after replacement?

    Hi everybody,
am going to replace my 30GB HDD with a 160GB HDD the next days, I am preparing everything around, as I am going to do it byf myself. One question besides all the data-saving, backing up and shifting to other drives is becoming increasingly interesting:
What do I do as soon as all the contents of the old drive are secured somewhere? Do I run a full erase on the drive? How can this be done?
(Sorry for the stupid quote, but the picture of a snake comes to my mind that eats up itself and whoops?!... away it is. ) I understand how to safely erase almost everything but the OS cannot be erased, correct?
    Thanks for a hint,
    I appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Keywan

Once you have the replacement and file/data transfer done, you can pick up a HD enclosure for about $20-30 at most any electronics store and put that 30g drive in it. Then you can erase it and use it as a removable HD. I will do that when I upgrade a HD, no sense trashing a perfectly good HD, even a smaller one, when you can still use it for the price of an enclosure.

  • Whats going on with Sherlock?

Seems like none of the Sherlock channels are working. Whats going on with this app?

    Hi Cacker,
Yes, myself I had to trash Sherlock's Caches every two hours or so in order to make it work with Mac OS X 10.4.2.
—> Now since I updated to 10.4.3, it works like a charm.
I don't know if it is because of the update itself, or because I
    - cleaned all Caches, including System Caches,
    - ran the three Periodic tasks, and performed a
    - disk repair with Disk Utility and a
    - directory repair with DiskWarrior,
    right before the update.
Anyway, make the OS Update the way I did it (Software Update, menu option "Install & Keep Package"), with the precautions above, and see if your Sherlock then works as perfectly well as mine afterwards?
    Good luck!

  • Need new batteries installed on perfectly good non supported players.

    Hello,
I loved my Creative Players with hard drives and have never been fond of Ipods. I was distressed that Ipods drove the Creative Hard Drive players out of existence and still love the ones I have.
When I logged into Creative Support to find an address to have new batteries installed -- I only got the message that these players were no longer supported.
Could someone suggest a reliable place to send my Zen Vision M and Zen Jukebox players to - to have new batteries installed.
I actually had purchased a battery online for the Jukebox but got cold feet when I started to take it apart to install it. I was afraid I was going to damage the player.
I see no reason to give up on these perfectly good MPs players just because the batterys are dead.
Thanks for reading. Hope someone can help

    Hello again sdl,
Well, I can perfectly understand your frustration as I've had similar experiences with perfectly-good products that cannot be used for whatever reasons. Guess that's what happens to all electronics products.
Now even though the batteries may be replaced, these products have already been out in the market for a very long time. Providing support for such products does not make economical sense for both Creative as well as for customers like you as you end up paying even more for, either the repair/replacement or the battery itself. That cost usually ends up equal, if not more to a new player.
You are not alone in this dilemma, I assure you.

  • *DEAD* G4 - what to do with it?

    Hello!
Well, our old PowerMac G4 (Sawtooth AGP Graphics - 400mhz) is dead. VERY Dead.
It needs a secondary (Or probably new - it has the original 10G drive) Hard drive. It has only 192 MB RAM (upgrade!), and the Airport card was crushed - how? I have absolutely no idea. It needs a new PRAM battery, and OS 9.2.2 is royaly messed up. On top of that, the DVD-ROM drive broke - a gear seems to have died after the tray caught on the little door. The keyboard needs to be replaced too - it's missing the keypad "0" key, the escape button's stuck, and it has a warp to it. The old round mouse died - although it's been sitting in a drawer for the last 6 years...
I guess we loved the G4 to death! (and then some)
Because my parents have a dual 1.8 G5, my sister can use our (relatively) old winbox, and I have my PowerBook and iMac, it's not worth the cost needed to repair and upgrade.
So, I have a very large doorstop. Now I need to figure out what to do with it. I'd ebay some of the parts, except that i don't think any of them work! The Ram and (original) video card still work, at least as of last week....
I love my old Macs too much to just throw them away, so I want to recycle (parts) of it at least. Heck, I still have our old PowerBook 5300 stuffed into my closet! (amazingly, it still works perfectly - apart from a finicky floppy drive)
I saw this neat picture of somebody's old blue/white G3 - they had turned the case into a mailbox! Using the optical drive slot as the mail slot, and putting a padlock on the pin that keeps the case closed. That's actually pretty cool - too bad my parents won't let me do that!
    Any good ideas?
    -Dan
Wow, yah, that old Powerbook still works. Heck, it even gets DSL! The SCSI 4x CD-ROM drive works too - along with the external 120 MB SCSI drive (at least 15 years old) The floppy drive doesn't like to work, but I can get it to work after some fiditing. I bet our old printer would still work if I hooked it up! I wish I still had our old Mac SE....
15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 (non-HiRes), Slot loading iMac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1G RAM on PB, 384 MB iMac.

Thanks, I'll look into the apple thing - I like the iPod idea too.
And to Anticitizen - I don't have any optical drives around. It's not the discs that are bad - but the drive itself. I don't have any Hard drives or PC 133 RAM either. I dont' like Windoze either, but she doesn't care (OMG!). It's just that everyone has a computer they like/can use. So, the G4 has been in a corner for 2 years, and I thought it'd find a new use.
Unfortunately, since everyone has a working machine, getting the G4 back up just isn't worth the cost. Trust me - I'd fix it if I had the money!
I do have a nerd friend.... hmmmm... I don't know if he'd like a Mac, however. He's mostly a gaming guy - and has enough parts to make at least another winbox or two. I am working on converting him to Mac! Lol, conversations between him and I tend to sound like the "Get a Mac" or "Switch" commerical campaigns.
Anyway, I'll think of something. If it had a CRT, I'd make it a Macquarium...
