What to do with an old, but functioning iBook?

I've searched in this area for a similar question, but with no joy, so I'd like to pose it... because I really do like this computer and want to use it productively.
I have an older iBook: 600mhz PowerPC G3 with 384mb RAM and a 18 gig HD (wow!). It is running OS X 10.3.7. I have not used the machine for quite some time... but it works just fine. I do have an iMac 21 inch screen desktop and a windows based desktop machine, for work.
What in the heck do I use the iBook for?
It's HD is limited, although I could install a larger HD.
It has no airport card... and my understanding (perhaps, incorrectly) is
that USB based wireless devices do not work so well with the version
of the iBook and OS.
My thinking was that is could serve as a music server: My 50 gig iTunes directory on the iMac has been copied to external HD's... one of which I could connect to the iBook. Plug it into my receiverand we are ready to go.
It would be nice to use it as a notebook computer around the house, but without the wireless, it makes it less functional.
I'd be interested in any and all suggestions. It's a terrific little computer and runs like a charm, well, slow compared to today's speed demons, but it gets you where you want to go.

It wouldn't cost a lot to put an original AirPort Card in it. If it has the ancient battery that came with it, you may need to move the adapter around with it and keep it plugged in most of the time, though (or buy a new battery).

I have a 2007 iMac that won't start, tried everything. Am happy to trash it (which seems a shame) but how do I get everything off it first if I can't start it? Do I remove the hard drive and pound it with a hammer??

If your serious about trashing it and only want the HD out, you can follow the instructions on the link below. Once the hard drive is out, you'll need and external case to connect to another (replacement) computer to access the data.
I believe you have the iMac7,1, so the info on this site should work. (Sorry to hear yours died - I have the same model and it still working fine with Mountain Lion.)

EDIT: Are you sure you tried everything? Did you take it to an Apple store - Genious Bar?
It does seem like a shame to trash if it's fixable. Have to weigh the cost of repairs against the cost of a new one.

What to do with the old iPhone?

My wife is getting the new phone next week and I had planned on keeping my 3G. Since both phone numbers are eligible for an upgrade I'm thinking of getting one too but not sure what to do with the old one. I guess it could be used as a WiFi-only gadget like an iTouch. Is there any market for these used phones? It looks like some are sold on eBay for $100-$200.

What to do with an old Ibook G3

I bought my Ibook G4 a couple years ago, but now my Ibook G3 (not the clamshell one) and it's just sitting in storage not being used. It doesn't have wireless because MacMall were morons and sent me the wrong Airport card, not to mention when I sent it back to be exachanged they didn't send back my free RAM upgrade. So it has the standard RAM but runs fairly well for old technology. I have all the disks and I can upload tiger on it, but I don't know if that will help or hurt it.
Is there anything I can do with it? Selling it isn't going to bring me much. Is it worth trying to use after a couple of upgrades?
I would also have to get another battery because the one it has won't hold a charge, neither will my Ibook G4 battery which is another issue

My old iBook 800Mhz G3 had a couple of problems in its life. First off the inverter cable went. Got that fixed. Then bit over a year later the logic board problem cropped up, by which time it would have been more expensive to repair than what is was worth. Not to mention the power cord was frayed and blackened (and I don't treat Macs badly!). It was just sitting around broken, and since I had upgraded to a MacBook, I enacted some revenge and dismantled it. I've salvaged to hard drive, RAM, screen and a few other bits. I'm going to put the hard drive in an enclosure, not sure what to do with the rest, but for me at least, it's more useful dismantled than sitting in one piece.
I wouldn't recommend it for a working iBook of course, they do fetch some good prices on eBay.

OK, I asked for you specifically because you always point out that there's no reason to zero out a SSD... so here's my quandry.
I'm saving my pennies for the new Crucial M500 960GB SSD - plan to get it right when they ship. I'm already making my purchases for my clone upgrades, but I'm wondering what to do with my old Crucial m4 512GB SSD? I know that I can't securely erase it and I know that I'll likely have no use for it in the future (unless I stick it in a new Mac Pro - which I doubt that I will be able to afford, anyway).
So what do I do with it? Put it in my safety deposit box? Go after it with a sledgehammer? What?

There are many valid reasons to zero fill a SSD to delete unwanted data.
You can't fill zero's on a SSD like you can do on a hard drive, Disk Utility won't allow it.
SSD's have limted write capability, thus that option is disabled by Apple, which I think they should have kept the option but with a warning and set limit of scrubs instead.

No guarranty this will ensure complete data destruction, if your really concerned, melt the thing in a fire outside, grind it up in one of those Tom Dickson Extreme Blenders also outside because of the toxic fumes/dust.
Until the Department of Defense comes out with some guidelines to pernamently delete data off a SSD or Flash drive, I would destroy the thing if your seriously concerned.

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

I have a 7 year old G3 Powerbook? Any suggestions what to do with it? It only has an 8 GB hard drive. But it runs 10.4.10. I've read somewhere you can turn it into a second monitor for editing.

I have one of those...the first edition ICEbook...the non-toilet seat ones, right? Well, my kids use it and I have FCP 4.5 installed on it for them to play with. Not that they have. All they do is research for school and online video games. Darn them.

What to do with an old iPod

I have an old iPod classic. 40GB circa 2003. I don't need it, it's just been sitting in a drawer for a couple of years. It works intermittently. I guess you could call it "faulty".
Is there anything I can do with it, besides chucking it in the bin? I don't want to keep it or repair it? Do people buy these for any reason?

You could sell it on ebay. There are numerous people out there who buy old iPods that are broken, either to repair them, or use them for parts to repair another iPod. Usually they will pay a pretty decent price for them too. Just do a search on ebay for broken iPods and you will see there are quite a few up for sale on there. Just make sure that if you do, that you do your best to describe exactly what is wrong with it and mention that it could also be used for parts.
You could always recycle it through Apple as well.

What to do with an old Time Capsule?

I just retired a 5 year old Time Capsule after replacing it with a new 2 TB model.
What could I do with the old one?
Would it be good for extending improving my home network? Existing network seems pretty fast with the new time capsule. Would using the old one on the network slow things down?
Would it make sense to connect it to a Blu-Ray player and use it instead of wifi?
Anything else come to mind?

What software works with the old 7290

I just want to move pictures and ringtones back and forth from my computer to my old 7290 and for the life of me I can't figure out which software works with this old model. I have tried several of the newer applications offered by RIM but none of them weem to work with this older model. Any ideas?

You should be able to 'see' the BlackBerry memory in the Meida Manager, and you can transfer small files to the Content Store on the BlackBerry using the Media Manager. Just remember that you are using the base memory on the BlackBerry for media files and you shouldn't get too crazy with files transferred to it.
Try installing v4.2 Service Pack 2 and using the Media Manager and seeing if the BlackBerry device memory option shows up at the bottom of the screen. When you open the memory you should see some file folders and you should store the files directly into the file folder appropriate to the media, and not use folders inside the original folder so the BB will 'see' the files when you use your Profile options to select ringtones or background photos.

It's generally not a good idea to tag onto an exisiting topic but rather better to start a new topic of your own so users will find it easier.
That said, you can not install OS X on the machine using the machine specific disks from the MacBook Pro. Won't work and is illegal to install on another machine anyways due to the license that you agree to when it is installed on the MBP!
You will need to purchase (now used) retail copy of Mac OS X Jaguar or Panther from a reseller such as ebay etc. Make sure it is a "Retail" copy and not upgrade disks or machine specific disks.
A 333 Mhz imac will additionally need an upgrade of the firmware first and the OS9 will have to be updated to at least 9.1 or 9.2 first before installing OSX. Tiger will not run very well I suspect on an older 333 if memory serves well if at all. It needs alot more free space on the HD to install than Jaguar or Panther. Leopard will definitely not work on the 333 iMac. Memory would have to be upgraded also to at least 256 MB to run Panther.

I have an old (original) iMac Rev A with a fried logic board (that's just not worth it for me to fix... moved on to G4 and now G5), and I remember years ago there were kits to turn Mac Classics into fishbowls and terrariums (I even saw one turned into a litter box! LOL!). Has anyone seen a kit or easy to do ideas on what I can do with my "Bhondi Buddy"?
It was such a great computer in it's time I'd like to see it in the house serving another purpouse.

Thinking what to do with an old i586 laptop

Well, on my old laptop (400 Mhz i586 CPU, 192 MB RAM, 4.5 GB HD), the Debian isntallation got screwed, the keyboard and trackpad stopped working, even though they work in BIOS, and its ~2.4 GB partition has had at most 300 MB of free space due to unnecessary Debian bloat (it has Openbox even...). I want Arch, but it's an i586 CPU (don't suggest the i586 Arch articlwe form the Wiki, it's not worth the trouble). To make matters worse, the CD drive is busted. I want to install a new distro on it (keeping its current dual boot with Windows 98 for those old games I used to play as a kid that only work in Win9x). I'm limited to these things to somehow manage to install a nice light distro, that's fairly up to date and with a good package manager (I like apt and pacman, haven't really used others) but doesn't take up as much space:
A Windows 98 Install (Maybe similar to Wubi except installs to its own partition?)
A flash drive (BIOS can't directly boot from it)
A floppy drive (can I put something on a floppy that allows the computer to boot off USB or something like that)
I need a distro and a way to install it, yeah this is a weird situation on a dying laptop but I want to do something with it

Yeah, needs internet access for a floppy install I think. Though maybe you could use the floppy to load the CD - does your laptop have a CD drive?
At any rate, I *think* you should be able to set up the wireless, but I'm not sure.
Would I be able to get it up and running with internet form just floppies, and then install the rest of the things I need like X, Openbox, etc from there? Or does the ath driver not come by default? Sorry for all the questions, but I just wanna make sure it will work before I go digging through my closet for floppies :-P I'll google about FreeBSD too.
ath driver is compiled into the kernel the installer uses, so yeah, it should be possible. Haven't been able to try it though.

What to do with an old eMac?

OK, odd question I know, but a worthwhile one in the interest of re-cycling and all that.
I am about to come into ownership of a eMac: 700mhz, half a gig ram, 40gb HDD, etc. Pretty much standard. At work I have a network with 1 wireless mini, a wireless MB and a wired Mini on it, all the machines on the network share a printer that is connected to the wired mini. I have a big external firewire HDD that I manually connect to the MB for backups etc. The two Mini's both have external USB hdds for backups, in both cases the external HDDs are only slightly bigger than the Mini's own internal hdd. Everything shares out the internet from the router.
Think that's pretty much everything covered.
So, as I say, I'm getting the Emac (swopping it for some stuff), my question is, what on earth can I use it for? I'm thinking along the lines of setting up some sort of fils server, or maybe hooking the big external HDD upto it and having everything back up to it over the network. Or maybe hooking the printer up to it, or something else.

Put the software Screen Recycler on the host mac http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html Click on downloads. NOTE : THIS IS SHAREWARE!!! IT ONLY WORKS IN 30 MIN. PERIODS without registering. Install a VNC program on the eMac. Try Jolly Fast VNC: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33113. Make sure both computers are connected somehow. Launch Screen Recycler on the other mac. Launch Jolly Fast VNC on the eMac. On Screen Recycler, dismiss any message about shareware unless you want to but it. Make sure screen recycler service is on. Hide this application. Do not close it! In Jolly Fast... on the eMac, click Screen Recycler, then click start. One of the menu bars may have display full screen. On the host mac you may have it as extended desktop or mirror mode. Voila! That's it! DON'T USE IT AS A FILE SERVER. With my experience, my froze all the time as a backup server.

What to do with an old iPod classic

My son moved out but left behind an old, I guess, iPod 60GB from way back. I would like to be able to donate this to, say, a soldier, even though I have no idea whether the battery is still good or not. My question is: are there any options for recycling this item? My son doesn't seem to miss it (in fact, he said to toss it), and I really would like to see it get into the hands of someone that could use it--someone, that is, who actually has done something for his/her country. Short of that, does Apple take these items back and make use of the parts? Thank you.

If you live near an Apple store you may be able to recyle the iPod. Problem is they offer 10% off a new one to you but you may be able to ask they do this in the form of a gift card that you can give to someone serving in the armed forces and they could put that towards something from the iTunes Store such as music or apps for a device they already have.
Considering you're trying to do this from the goodness of your heart, it's worth a try.
