What to do with Appleworks documents

I just bought a new iMac, only to discover that appleworks no longer exists. I do have appleworks on an iMac X 10.4, bought last year. Can I safely transfer that program to my new computer?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
A quick search in this forum will find multiple posts, a lot by me, that verify that AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 work very well on the newest Macs with the newest OS.
Copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications to a CD as well as the Button Bar Preferences in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks if you have customized the Button Bar. Then copy these to the same locations on the new Mac. You will also then have the CD as a back up should you ever need it. To keep within the user license, you will need to remove the copy of AppleWorks from the old Mac.

  • Help with Appleworks documents

I just upgraded my system to Lion.   Now I cannot acess any of my Appleworks documents.  Is there any way to solve this?
I really like the Appleworks application.  Am I stuck with only using Excel for Mac?  Thanks

To open my AW documents I used Numbers and Pages. I found that worked quite nicely.
or my AW databases, I migrated the data prior to upgrading to Lion and then using Bento as the replacement for AW DB.
I don't have anything from Microsoft on my Macs.
If you remain on Lion, you are going to have to find another application to use instead of AW.

  • Problem with AppleWorks documents when connecting via ftp to my server

When I connect over the internet using ftp to my mac mini server (using OS X server 10.4.10) from my iMac G4 (using 10.4.10) all my AppleWork docs will only appear as .bin instead of .cwk.
If I download one to my G4, it will try to open using stuffit expander but cannot be opened. It comes up with “An error ocurred attempting to expand name.bin unspecified Stuffit Engine internal error” Error #17999
However Microsoft Word docs show correctly and can be downloaded and opened without problem.
When I try directly on the server or try from any computer on the local network conected to the server, everthing views correctly and can be opened.
Could it be to do with any settings on the server when connecting by ftp.
    Thanks for the help.

One problem still remains that when I download minicad files (which uses OS 9) they show up as .exe and will not open or recognisable by the programme
I imagine the file is transferring without a suffix and your computer is trying to guess what it is; hence the .exe. Delete this and append the suffix for the correct program and it should open (or use File>Open within the program).

  • Opening Word documents with Appleworks

I often receive Word documents as email attachments (though my hotmail account). I can download these Word documents to my desktop but when I click on them to open them I get an offer to purchase MS Word (which I do not have). I would like to be able to simply open the Word documents with Apple works--and I am hoping I can just click on them and have that happen automatically. But it doesn't. I have tried opening Appleworks and going into the wordprocessing program and then opening the Word document through that, but it only is successful part of the time. What can I do? I would like to have these Word douments open automatically in Appleworks but every time I click on them (i.e., their icon on my desktop) I get that advertisement from Microsoft asking me to buy Word. Is this ad blocking a normal function of Appleworks that would otherwise allow me to open Word documents with a click? And in any case, how can I proceed?

The ad for Word is almost certainly being tacked on through or at Hotmail (taglines or adware from Hotmail? Hoodathunk .....) ; it sure isn't coming from AppleWorks or from anything on your own system, unless you have that demo copy of Office still lurking somewhere. I suppose it could come from that, somehow.
Assuming you can get a clean attachment downloaded to your Desktop from Hotmail, the procedure for having what you want to happen automatically is fairly straightforward and, really, has nothing at all to do with Appleworks. Try the following:
--> Select (highlight) one of those downloaded .doc files from Word, then
--> use the Finder's Get Info command (⌘-I). In the window which appears,
--> see the "Open with" section, and set it to AppleWorks.

  • What is the best way to work with Word documents in The InDesign CS4???

I work in Microsoft Word 2007 and all my documents have *.doc format.
What is the best way to work with Word documents in InDesign CS4???
David Blatner says to avoid copying and pasting text from Word instead of placing it (Ctrl+D).
How about pasting RTF or Text Document???
I want to make book's layout in ID CS4 and its main feature is that there is the left page with text and the right - with graphics.
So, as I understand to place the text on each page I must create for example 70 Word documents and place each item on 70 left pages???
It loks like wasting time. I sthere another way of making such layout???  What kind????

It's best to place any text.
You can have all of your text in one file and use auto-flow to add threaded text frames and pages as required (Hold down the Shift key when you click the loaded text cursor), but it's a little non-standard to have the thread only on one side of the spread from the auto-flow perspective, so you'll have to set up properly.
This is one case where a master text frame will work to your advantage. On your master page spread, add a text frame to the left page, but not to the right (or at least not threaded to one on the right -- for some other project you might actually want two independent text threads). Hold the loaded cursor over a frame on the left side of a document page and auto-flow. ID will add new spreads as necessary, but only put the text on the left side.

  • HT4918 what happen with the documents in Idisk, how can i see them in iCloud?

what happen with the documents that i have in my idisk?? how can i move them into icloud??

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, iCloud does not offer equivalents to Mobile Me’s iDisk, Gallery or Web Hosting services. You will need to find a third party solution to replace these services. You might consider DropBox, SugarSync, MediaFire or any other service that offers online storage. (not all these alternatives offer all the services previously provided by iDisk)

    Welcome James!
For no cost, you can try the open-source productivy suite LibreOffice. I don't have any AW files here to test but there are reliable reports that LibreOffice can open at least some AW files:

Please turn off your caps lock key. All-caps text is harder for us to read and is considered "shouting" or "anger" by most internet text conventions. Thanks!

  • Will Lion open Appleworks documents with Pages or Numbers as Snow Leopard does?

Will Lion open Appleworks documents with Pages or Numbers like Snow Leopard does? Or do I have to convert all my Appleworks files before installing Lion?

Functionality of Pages and Numbers has little to do with whether it's runnong on Snow Leopard or Lion.  Either way, if they open an AppleWorks document in SL, they'll open it in Lion.  Of course, you have to understand that certain file types - particularly, AppleWorks databases - cannot be opened with anything other than AppleWorks, so you'll need to convert them with AppleWorks before upgrading to Lion.

  • Really having problems with organising documents in pages. For example, deleting pages deletes the whole section and I cannot insert a section break as its greyed out & sending an object to background deletes several pages - what the **** is going on???

Really having problems with organising documents in pages. For example, deleting pages deletes the whole section and I cannot insert a section break as its greyed out & sending an object to background deletes several pages and trying to insert a text box autmatically creates new pages- what the **** is going on??? Is this programme really this badly thought out? I thought everything apple was supposed to be intuitive!?!?!? Help.

You can not insert a section break into a textbox.
You appear to have a lot of objects with wrap set, that once you take them out of the flow of text (by sending them to the background) causes the text to reflow and contract into fewer pages. Pages is almost unique in the way it forms up pages in Word Processing mode only so long as there is text on them.
I suspect you probably have hammered away at returns, spaces and tabs as well to position things, which only works to add to the mess.
Download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf available under the Help menu and swot up a bit on how it works.
You may find this a usueful resource as well:

PS There is quite a lot of programming in OSX that is far from "intuitive". Pages is easy at one level, when using the templates, otherwise it can be quite frustrating.

When I try and open a word document I received the following message:  "You cant open the application Microsoft Word because PoerPC applications are no longer supported".  What is up with that?

Here is a post that I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • How to open an Appleworks document created in the classic mode with a one year old iMac using 10.6.8

Trying to open a 10 year old Appleworks document. Get a dialog box that the Classic Mode is not supported on this machine. Is there a way to work around this problem and open the doc?

Try dropping the document onto the icon for AW 6.2.9; or use the Open item in AW 6.2.9's File menu.
Provided the document is in AW 5.x or later format, it should b openable in AW 6.
If the document is in AW 6.x format, it should also be able to be opened by Pages.

  • Will Pages under Lion be able to open old AppleWorks documents in the way that it does under Snow Leopard?

I've just read a thread  that suggested that Pages will be able to open AppleWorks documents under Lion,  is this correct?
I understood from discussions last month that one had to convert all  old AppleWorks documents to Pages or Word or some other format BEFORE upgrading to Lion as Pages would not be able to read them afterwards.
I wanted to pass on a tip that if you have used the AppleWorks password protect on your files, you will not be able to open them in Pages, so you need to open them in AppleWorks first, and take the password off, or save them as a file which is not protected, or some similar work around.

The Apple Support Community (us) just calmed me right down!  Hi everyone.  I just down loaded Lion through the Apple Apps Store and blindly went ahead and installed it, putting my mental well being in Apple's hands, having trusted Apple since my first Apple II (1974?).  But ... "What do you mean, Appleworks isn't supported?"  In a bit of a panic, wondering what was to happen to my vast (really) stock of AW documents I came to Apple Support for help.  Thanks to the input from Sue, Cornelius, Jonanna and others I took the leap and, clicking on the "OpenApple"-I, accessed the "Open With" switching the AW document to open with Pages. In a word, perfect. And, it looks like Lion has already told itself to open all AW (remember Claris?) documents with Pages.   CM
( Except I just spotted a thread titled "AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages" ... Going there next. )

  • How  to change page layout in an Appleworks document  to horizontal?

I have written a lengthy document in Appleworks 6 in vertical A4 page layout, and want to reduce it in size by printing horizontally with two pages to a sheet. The Epson 56DBAD printer doesn't seem to recognize or allow for page layouts to be previewed, and neither does Appleworks, which when I try to preview eliminates the right and left margins!
It's a simple thing, surely, to turn an A4 page onto its side and print two pages of a document side by side on it. What am I doing wrong?

With your document open go to File > Page Setup & click the second icon (the one not highlighted in this screenshot).

  • Finder and Appleworks documents

I have a friend who had a great many files in Appleworks. We were able to install Appleworks on her imac with Leopard, and she has been gradually moving them into .doc format (copying the Appleworks file contents, pasting it into a clean Neooffice doc and then saving the Neoffice doc.) She saves them into the same folder that the Appleworks docs lived (with no extension).
What is weird is that the Appleworks documents appear to come and go almost at random. One time you can't see them in the folder where you know they were, the next time you CAN. You can find them with Spotlight. I've done the disk cleanup and reset permissions, etc, run Onyx on it. Still happens after multiple restarts and on multiple documents. It SEEMS to be just limited to Appleworks documents, which seem to appear and disappear.
We can live with this - she's about done with her copying at this point - but it IS a behavior I've not seen before. Has anyone else seen this? Does it portend something more ominous than just an old program not being properly recognized?

    This contains the following topics....
    AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
These symptoms are usually caused by a full Recent Items folder, or less commonly, a full Auto Save folder. Follow these steps to empty the Recent Items folder or Auto Save folder.
    1. Quit AppleWorks.
    2. Delete the contents of AutoSave and Recent Items (Folders)
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/AutoSave
    3. I t was also reported that deleting the following also solved a problem...
    ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    4. If you do not use either the Recent Items or Auto Save (aka Auto Recovery) features of AppleWorks you can disable them from the AppleWorks Preferences.
THEN... if AppleWorks still will not launch:
    1. Open your Applications folder, and then the AppleWorks folder. You should see the AppleWorks icon and several "supporting folders" (AppleWorks Essentials, AppleWorks Extras, Starting Points, etc.)
    2. Control + Click on the AppleWorks icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Double-click to open the Contents folder. Here's where the problem is.
4 You should see 3 folders and files. The folders should be named MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources. In all the incidents I've seen, the "MacOS" folder has somehow been renamed with some long obscure cache-like number. Rename this folder MacOS (be sure to type it exactly like this, no space)
    5. Close the Contents folder and Package folder and try to launch Appleworks.
    6. Smile!
If this does not work for you, (there was one incident that the above fix did not for me), highlight the MacOS folder and duplicate it. Toss the original and rename the copy to Mac OS. For some reason the copy worked.

  • I can't open Appleworks (or any appleworks documents)

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I can't open Appleworks. It disappeared from my dock. I made a new alias to put there. If I click on an Appleworks document the Alias icon bounces up and down once, and nothing else happens. Same if I click on the alias icon in the dock. If I click on Appleworks in the Applications menu nothing happens. If I highlight a file and try to open it under "Open With" under the File menu in Finder nothing happens. Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated, as I have a lot of important information stored in those documents. Thanks!

I had a similar problem & did what you said & AppleWorks opened from the desktop. What do I do with the folders on the desktop?
If you really applied what I described:
    +Drag the folder:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
    +and the file:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.appleworks.pli st
    +on the Desktop.+
and if in this case AppleWorks.6 behaves correctly, you may trash the items which I asked you to move on the desktop.
Often, it's a good idea to open the
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
folder which you moved on the desktop ,
grab the "AppleWorks 6 Button Bars" file and move it in the newly created
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks: folder.
Doing that you will recover your set of custom buttons; Of course if you didn't created custom buttons this task is unneeded.
