What to do with MPEG-1 Files!?!?

I am trying to blend some photos and video together to make a movie (and ultimately a DVD). I am totally flying by the seat of my pants here, but now I realize that the video files I was given are MPEG-1 and nothing on my machine appears to be compatible... and guidence about what I can do to convert the files or get the programs I DO have to deal with the files in their current form?

I just installed the tryout version of encore DVD 2.0.
I have the same problem i had on Premiere Pro 7.0 where it can process the audio tracks of MPEG-2 files.
In Encore, i also can't ear a thing when using the monitor window to playback the asset MPEG-2 file in its own timeline.
In other words, can Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 can process MPEG-2 assets or is it just good for AVI format ?

I tried again today and for some reason, part of the Audio is back !
I still get gaps though.
I was wondering... I see this transcoding settings and not sure what it fully implies ! (Even after reading the manual)
I captured VHS tapes using Hauppauge WinTV PVR Hardware encoder (MPEG-2 chip)... With great results !!!!
I just figured that i wont be able to use Premiere to edit those rushs but my main goal was simply to put the rush on a well organized DVD... Therefore using Encore DVD 2.0.
What would the recomanded settings be in terms of audio transcoding ? Dolby, MPEG-1, PCM ??
Should i set (Doesn't transcode) ???

What to do with js, css files

I hope this question is appropriate for this forum because I have scratched my head for hrs. I am in the mission of finding a simple drop down menu and came across to this site http://css-tricks.com/simple-jquery-dropdowns/
It uses minimum jquery and CSS to achieve it. Looks like it is reasonable for a novice to tackle. Codes are downloaded and unzipped ( there are css,images,js). Question is how do I even get this to run under my test application ? I would think I need to import the image files but what to do with the rest of files? they are not plugin. Could any guru give me a jump start ?
Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to import them into APEX under "Shared Components - Static Files" and "Shared Components - CSS". Then you can include the files in your page template using the following html code:

Premiere cs5 problem preview with mpeg 2 file

i've another question
i open a new premiere cs 5.0.3 project with a matrox sequence lower filed
i import a dv tape from matrox firewire, and edit the file and export an mpeg2 file, everithing seems work fine, but...
if i import this mpeg2 file in premiere and i put in a timeeline it's impossible to see it clearly in a jvc external monitor i try to change the field but nothing change, only solutions is to activate flicker removal but doing this i loose quality
i try another project with file from canon 550,
i open a matrox 720p hd sequence and put on timeline the file and everything seems work fine and the output external monitor is ok but if i export into mepg2 file and i try import this mpeg 2 file in a matrox dv sequence is afwul and i have to set on filcker removal but so i loose quality
my pc:
win 7 64bit, matrox rtx2 hd, nvidia gtx 470, jvc external monitor, 12gb ram ddr3 premiere cs 5.0.3

i use premiere for my job from the first version, i spend my money in a software that i like (production premium)
sometimes i need to use mpeg file for a project because i haven't different format like avi etc
i do this many times with cs, cs3, cs4 without problem and now with cs5 i can't do to this anymore?
Maybe it's like a russian rullet knowing if the last version is really better than older one

What to do with "Unix Executable Files"?

What do I do with Unix Executable Files? I've tried navigating to them in Terminal and typing in the file name but that doesn't work. How do I execute them?
I'm trying to install some web development framework software, and it appears that the command names start with the file I'm referring to but when I'm in the directory containing the Unix Executable File and type in the file name followed by a command it doesn't work. I get "command not found"

   In old-style shell environments, all files in the current working directory were defined to be in your PATH, where the shell looks for executables. That was before Trojan Horses. Now you have to specify the current working directory in the command line. Fortunately there is a nice "shorthand" for that. If foo.sh is an executable in the current working directory then it can be invoked this way:
./foo.sh

What is wrong with my txt file or merge doc?

I'm trying to merge data from a txt file. It's for name badges. I've got the document designed (8-1/2 x 11" Avery 5392, 6 badges per sheet) and connected successfully to my data source. There are only 4 types of info in the txt file (agency name, state, name, title). When I create the merge fields for each badge position and click preview, I only get the first record repeated into each of the 6 locations on the page. What am I missing or doing wrong? I'm using InDesign CS2.

I've also attempted this with a csv file with and got the same results.

I downloaded your sample files, and here is what I had to adjust:
1, I made the master page a single page; not facing pages. I changed from inches to picas
2. I made two layers: one for graphics and second for text, above the graphics layer
3. I put the artwork ai file on the graphics layer on the master page
4. I deleted 5 of 6 duplicate text frames on page 1; leaving only the first upper left text frame
5. I moved that lone textframe to the master page, in the same relative position
6. Text in that text frame should have been controlled with paragraph styles, BTW, but that is a detail
7. I returned to view page 1
Then, going to the DataMerge panel, I turned on preview and also clicked the right-most button at the bottom of the panel to setup the merge.
All records and Multiple Records per document page
Then, onto the Multiple Record Layout tab:
Top margin 16pica
Bottom margin 3pica
Left margin 2pica
Right margin 2pica
Spacing between columns 1p6
Spacing between rows 11p6
Check on Preview Multiple Record Layout
OK to generate
So, it turns out your txt file was OK as it was.

What to do with an ISO file?

I've downloaded a zip file which has expanded to an iso file - I thought i needed to burn it to dvd before opening but nothings happened.... it does look like it hasn't fully uncompressed.... any ideas? Thanks....

An ISO is yet another compressed file. So your compressed ZIP archive was just a compressed ISO archive (double-zip!). Not sure why anyong would do that, but simply copying the ISO to a disc won't work. You'll end up with a single file (the ISO) burned on the disc.
You need to do a "burn image" session. Nearly all burning software has that ability. Basically the burning software unzips the archive to disc during the burn so that you end up with a multitude of files on your disc.
ISO is particularly useful when imaging a bootable disc, and then making copies from that image that boot like the original.

What's wrong with my Quartz files?

I have an issue with Quartz Composer files. Some screensaver files, like arabesque, shell spectrum, and RSS visualizer, crash system preferences whenever i try to select them. Also, the actual files (the ones in the system folder) make the finder crash whenever i try to open them or use quick look. I've already replaced the files thinking they were corrupted, but it keeps happening. I transferred the files to my old iMac G5 and it reads them just fine! Help!!
Also, iChat keeps crashing whenever i try to use the video effects.

If you aren't using the beta Safari afraid I don't know. Mine are all working just fine in 10.5.5. I don't use iChat, so don't know if that would be affected by the same problems.

Import error with MPEG-2 files: Brorsoft Video Converter to Apple Prores.

Hi,
The Brorsoft Video Converter software gives me an 'import error' message when I attempt to import files from a folder on my desktop. That folder contains many mpg files (MPEG-2 Video, AC3). Those files in the folder on my desktop came from a Sony video camera.
I need to convert those mpg files to Apple Prores 422 HQ so I can then edit them in Apple Final Cut Pro X.
But when I go to import those mpg files into the Brorsoft Video Converter software, it comes up with a message saying: 'import error', indicating that the Brorsoft Video Converter software does not understand the type of file.
I am on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.
I've emailed Brorsoft support but I don't think English is their first language – they've emailed back to me asking for clarification of the problem. And I need the problem fixed as I have to edit this video for someone that has many waiting customers.
Could something have changed in the files when I copied them from the video camera to the desktop?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I was using a friend's video camera – I've just texted him for the exact model of Sony video camera. I didn't yet have the Brorsoft Video Converter software when I had to give the video camera back to my friend. So, I copied the files off the video camera to my desktop.
It records onto an internal hard drive. And yes you're right, I don't need to go HQ. I also tried plain Apple Pro Res. That didn't work either. It comes up with 'Import error' message, so it seems like it just doesn't understand the file type.
When I go 'Get Info' on one of the files off the camera, it tells me it is an 'MPEG-2 video, AC3' file.
I'll try and get MPEG Streamclip like you suggested and see if that works.

What To Do With Leftover .m2v files

After completing a DVD creation session, I'm left with the .m2v and .ac3 files Compressor created during the process. Are these files benefitial to save for future DVD burns if needed? Will they save me time in the next process? I tried this by pointing to these files when I wanted another DVD, but compressor seems to just start re compressing and it takes just as long to re create the same DVD session. I don't see the time savings.
Or should I use these files and work with them in DVD Studio Pro, and it saves processing time?

Im guessing the session you refer to is a DVD that was created directly in Compressor via a job action. Another workflow would be to output to HD, which creates a disk image that can be used to burn multiple copies – a considerable time-saver.
And as dc points out, the MPEG-2 and AC3 files that Compressor spits out are DVD compliant and can be used in a DVDSP project.

What to do with MP4 Source Files

I usually edit avi files, but a friend has asked me to edit a batch of mp4 files that were taken on a little Samsung camcorder. I'm not sure what presets I should use, but nothing seems to look good when I experiment. Any suggestions?

Firefox asks what to do with a PLS file

When I attempt to stream radio from the BBC site by clicking Listen Live a window opens which reports:

What should Firefox do with this file?

It is both easier and more complicated than that. I really can't give you any "sample code" because it isn't a coding issue. It is more of a data representation issue. XML is both a "simple" markup language and a complex data representation language. You need to read up a bit on XML to see what you can do with it. Come up with a test data set that is formatted the way that make sense to you. Or, maybe create a test data structure in your code and save that to XML to see how the native representation looks.
At that point, you will know what your input looks like and you will know what your output should look like. You just need a way to get from A -> B. For XML, the quickest way to do that is through XSLT.
