What to do with old iBook

I found an iBook (blue one) and two PowerBooks G3 in my recycle area. A friend looked at them and said to toss them. Is there a place to recycle these? I hate to toss them in the trash. Does Apple recycle?

Hi, I just checked the recycle value of my beloved iBook. Zero dollars. Hurt my feeling for not quite one second. I love my iBook and still use it. No plan to recycle or part company with my wonderful iBook, Old Faithful. Solid machine. I am doing an important project. Have a notebook or two or three in the house. Guess which one I am using for my project?

  • What is wrong with my iBook?

I have a G4 1.xx ghz iBook. It's about 14 months old, and it just stopped working a few days ago.
It no longer powers up. I can hear what sounds like the fan when I push the power button, but nothing happens. The display worked just fine right before this happened, but now the display doesn't even turn on when I click on the power. It doesn't even make the startup sound.
I have to click on shift control alt and power to shut it down. It once started up normally since this happened, but it turned itself off after about 10 minutes.
What is wrong with my iBook? I've been using Windows again in the past week or so at home, and I really hate it.
    Please provide me some suggestions...
Is this the infamous logic board problem? I thought those would only occur on the G3.

Now it's working just fine. I am using my iBook now.
I thought that the Apple Care was only good for 12 months. I am on my 14th or 15th month of owning it.

  • What's wrong with old applet tag?

    Hi there,
What is wrong with old <applet> tag? It will stop displaying java applet in the new browsers? What do we gain by using <embed>?
    Thanks.
    Mike

The applet element was deprecated in HTML 4.01 but still works. Continue to use it to display AWT applets in NE else if using SWING applets must to use EMBED. See Java documentation for details, in special the OBJECT tag chapter..better reading about HTML converter.

  • What's wrong with this iBook?

White iBook circa 2008. On a hard boot attempt, it makes a loud clicking noise from the right side of the unit, near the trackpad. It then fails to boot and gives the no OS symbol.
I thought this was a hard-drive failure and was set to replace the drive.
But... when I boot connect over Firewire from my MacMini with the iBook in target mode, the hard-drive works fine. I was able to back up all the data from the iBook.
    Any ideas on what's wrong?

not to split hairs, but apple quit selling the ibooks in early 2006. so do you have a macbook or is it truly an ibook? I ask because the ibooks used 1 IDE bus & both drives were chained to it, so a bad cable or drive could affect the other drive.
on macbooks, this isn't the case, as the hard drive is sata & the optical drives were still IDE then, so 2 different bus interfaces.

  • What to do with old ATC?

My Airport Time Capsule (purchased April 2009) has apparently died.
A 'factory reset' results in a green light, then flashing amber, then solid amber, then the LED goes dark.  It never appears in Airport utility during this process.
I was using it mainly for backup and don't need a wireless router, so I bought an external hard drive to serve that purpose.
So what do I do with the old ATC?  I don't know if my data is still on it or not.  I hate to throw it in the trash.  Is it recycleable?  Is it worth anything to someone with the know-how to fix it?  If they fix it, will my data be exposed?
I just don't know what to do with it now.  Any suggestions?

You were right.  Power supply was dead.
I've never done anything like this before, but thanks to the link you provided with instructions, I opened up my time capsule.
I have no way to wipe the hard drive, so I decided to take a chance on replacing the power supply.
Ordered one on eBay ($79.95) and installed it.  Time Capsule powered up and is running fine.  It runs really hot so after reading about all the issues with the design, I decided to leave the rubber mat off the bottom and got some 'feet' for it so it doesn't sit flat on the shelf.
I wiped the hard drive and started my Time Machine backups again.  I really prefer the 'wireless' backup to the TC rather than having the USB hard drive plugged into my Macbook Pro for backups.
If I can get another 4 years out of it, it will be well worth it!
    Thanks again for the advice!

  • What to Do with Old iPhone When a New One Comes Out

What do you do with your old iPhone when a new one comes out? Is there some trade-in thing or something? Do I just pay full price for the new iPhone? Does AT&T have a trade-in policy or something?

No trade-in. I just sell mine [on ebay] a few weeks before the newer version comes out, or right after. they go for quite a bit if they are in nice condition.

  • Lost iphone, replaced it, found lost one, what to do with old one

Ok, I lost my iphone 4g, I get a replacement, insurance wasn't available at the time I got the phone. Now one of my co-workers found it for me today, what can I do with the old phone. Should I report it to Verizon, and hope they would offer credit or some consolation to my account. Or don't bother wasting my time with that, just try to sell it.
    Please advise, thanks

How did you get a replacement?  If you just purchased it, the old one is yours to do with as you wish.  The credit you can get from Verizon is  less than you could get for it by selling it yourself, but you have to consider if that is worth the hassle.  See the official Verizon program:
    https://www.trade-in.vzw.com
Looks like for the VZ iPhone in good condition:
    $252 16GB
    $265  32GB
    $312 64GB
(I would expect these prices (and those you get elsewhere) to drop once a new iPhone comes out.)
If you got the phone some other way (you say insurance wasn't available) through a credit card company or something, I'm sure the conditions would say the old phone belongs to them.

  • What to do with old 30GB hard drive after replacement?

    Hi everybody,
am going to replace my 30GB HDD with a 160GB HDD the next days, I am preparing everything around, as I am going to do it byf myself. One question besides all the data-saving, backing up and shifting to other drives is becoming increasingly interesting:
What do I do as soon as all the contents of the old drive are secured somewhere? Do I run a full erase on the drive? How can this be done?
(Sorry for the stupid quote, but the picture of a snake comes to my mind that eats up itself and whoops?!... away it is. ) I understand how to safely erase almost everything but the OS cannot be erased, correct?
    Thanks for a hint,
    I appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Keywan

Once you have the replacement and file/data transfer done, you can pick up a HD enclosure for about $20-30 at most any electronics store and put that 30g drive in it. Then you can erase it and use it as a removable HD. I will do that when I upgrade a HD, no sense trashing a perfectly good HD, even a smaller one, when you can still use it for the price of an enclosure.

  • What to do with old iPhoto library after migration to Photos

After migration to Photos my hard drive is maxed out. I want to move the 15gigs old iPhoto library to an external drive to free some space as some have suggested. Others here have said you can just trash the old library. There must be a reason 10.10.3  was designed to retain the iPhoto library. Trash it--really? Another suggestion was to put my 15 gigs on a flash drive. So the question is: does Photos need to be able to see the iPhoto library as it would if on an external drive connected to my Time Machine?

Thanks for your reply but I'm still confused as to how I lost over 10Gigs of HD space after the migration. I understand the conversion is supposed to create more space, not less.  When I look in the pictures folder in Finder, I see 2 LIbrarys, iPhoto and Photos, each of them approx 15 Gbs. according to the Get Info menu.  I guess what I don't understand is if the iPhotos Library is not needed and is moved to an external drive why that wouldn't free that amount of space.
Also, if "optimization" is supposed to move "some" high res images to the cloud to make room on the HD, how is it that I find myself with only 1gb left on my HD? What is the criteria that triggers "optimization" and how much room can we expect it to shoot for? There seems to be a variety of answers on this subject, many of them sound like guesses. Apple's explanation is vague about how it works, so hopefully someone has the accurate, in depth scoop on this.

  • What to do with old Ipod 4

Apple gave me back my broken Ipod 4 that they replaced with a new one for a price.  I am just wondering what I can do with it now?

Anything yo want. Sell for parts.
I am surprised since Apple exchanges an old iPod for a refurbished one as an out-or-warranty replacement.

  • What to do with old iPhone

I have my new 3g iPhone as an upgrade. I would like to give my old (old!) iPhone to a family member. I was told at the O2 store (in the UK), that they'd be issuing Pay As You Go sims for the old phones next week. Anybody know if this is true? Otherwise, what's everyone else doing with their old handset?

Thanks for that. Yes, I got the O2 PAYG sim and set up the iPhone with it without any problems. I paid £20 for a top up, nothing for the sim, and I got £22 in total credit. There's a £10 per month data bolt on you can buy, but I didn't bother. I now have one of the very first official Pay As You Go iPhones. Pretty good.

  • What to do with old PPC Mac Mini?

I've got an old Mac Mini Power PC lying around with 160 GB HD and 1 GB of RAM. Rather than just let it collect dust, are there any interesting things I can do with it within my home? I'm not looking to run my own web or email server, but any other ideas I'd love to hear.
    Thanks

    Hello Wayne,
Unless your running a SOHO (Small Office Home Office if your not familiar with the term) the mini server is WAY WAY overkill. For what your wanting to do, the regular version of the OS will work just fine.
Several companies have drive enclosures that look almost identical to the mac mini that is a concern, I'll post a link to one at the end of this response.
If you were going to connect connect your two Mini's directly via the ethernet port you would loose your internet connectivity unless you went (a)wireless for the network portion of your project or (b) got one of apple's usb/ethernet adapters. My suggestion would be to pick up like a netgear, or some other brand, multiport router and plug both units into it.
FW400 to FW00 works fine, I've used it several times when migrating some of the people I support from older macs to newer ones.
Hope this helps or gives you more ideas LOL

  • What to do with old ink cart?

I have a HP 5440 printer that uses the 92 black and 93 color cartridges. What do I do with the old cartridges if I get a HP 6550 wireless printer? Can you send the old cartridges back for credit in newer ones?

  • What to do with old mac running leopard

what should i do with this emac? i don't need it for a file server or anything like that.
    any ideas?
    eMac G4, 700MHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD/CD-RW
running 10.5.1 (yes, Leopard, it runs faster than tiger, even on 700MHz)

The eMacs are great for oldies. The tray loader is far easier to use with shaky hands than a slot loader.
If the eMac doesn't owe you anything try the local superannuitants clubs or Old folks homes.
No one is going to wander off with it under their arm and the screen is easy to see and clean.
Otherwise a young family could give it a good home.
I loved my eMac it's now being used by a young family with Tiger installed.

  • What to do with old router

hi i have a old BT router 2 and a very old orange router, im 99.9% sure they will never be used again. What should i do with it. I have local electronic recycling banks for small items, is that the best and safest thing to do?

More than likely yes Or you could keep it just in case the one you're using goes faulty. You could then use it until you get a replacement.
