What to do with Palm Desktop data when I upgrade to Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard

I have an old Tungsten handheld device but only use Palm Desktop on my Mac.  I have a lot of data stored in this format and do not want to lose this functionality when I upgrade to Snow Leopard, which, I understand, does not support Palm Desktop.  Ideally, I'd like to export my Palm Desktop data (address book, memos, to do list, and calendar) to another software package that will run on Snow Leopard.  I do not need any syncing capability.  What are  my options?
Thanks!

When upgrading my Mac from  OS X Snow Leopard, to OS X Mavericks, The installer displayed my parallel and my PC applications. How can i get them back?

You either have to restore the Snow Leopard backup you made prior to installing Mavericks, or create a separate Snow Leopard partition to boot to in order to run your older PowerPC applications.
Either that, or upgrade the apps which won't run in Mavericks to newer versions that do.

If everything works perfectly, your data should not be touched.
Personally I never trust my data to everything working perfectly.
I always backup everything twice at least.

  • Will I loose all my files and photos when I upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow leopard

I have purchased Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the Mac store and I am ready to install it. Will I loose all my files and photos when I install it ?  I am upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 Snow leopard.

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.

  • What to do with my old iphone when I upgrade?

I am planning on upgrading my iphone to the uphone 4.  Can I still use the non- phone functions on my old iphone?

FYI: If you're in the U.S. and you go to Radio Shack to do the upgrade, they take trade ins. A working 3Gs in good condition can net you up to $200 in trade, completely paying for the iPhone 4 on contract. A working 3G in good condition got me $125, meaning my iPhone 4 upgrade was only $75.
Might want to consider it unless you intend to give your old phone to a friend or sell it yourself.

  • How to copy Palm Desktop data to a PC using Windows 8.1

If like me you still find the Palm Desktop data (address, calendar, memos, etc.) handy and use it long after throwing away the handset and "sync" ability, you may find this useful.  I bought a new PC using Windows 8.1 and had problems transferring data because of a wrinkle that I figured out, which didn't exist in Windows XP, Vista or 7 versions.  Here's a recap of one way to easily transfer data from those earlier versions if you have a USB flash drive (or Dropbox, Google Drive, whatever) handy :
    1) Download Palm Desktop 6.2 or 6.2.2 to your new PC.  Then give a user name exactly as it exists in your old PC's database.  This name will be used by Desktop software to create a six letter folder name (an abbreviated version of your name) to hold data that Palm Desktop will look up.  Wait a few seconds for this to happen, then close the Desktop application on your new PC.
    2) In your old PC from where you want to transfer data, look for the folder called "Palm OS Desktop" which should exist in "Documents" under "Users" folder and subfolders path like >your name subfolder>Documents in Windows 7 (may be Vista too) or may be under "Documents and Setting" folder in Windows XP.
    3) In this folder "Palm OS Desktop" look for that six letter subfolder of your name, and select that entire subfolder and choose "Copy" or Ctrl-C
    4) Locate the same subfolder name in your new PC (which will have null data), delete it, and then "paste" the subfolder you "copied" into the same exact location.  If you've done it right, Viola!  Your new PC desktop should show all the transferred data once you again open the application.
Most of the same procedure works with Windows 8.1 (probably also Windows 8) PCs.  What I found different was that the data subfolder created under "Palm OS Desktop} had 7 instead of 6 characters with a "0" (zero) added as the last character.  So when you finally copy and paste that subfolder into the new PC you have to rename it and add that "0" for the Palm Desktop to locate this data.
    Hope this helps.

  • Palm Desktop crashes when viewing one month in monthly view

Hi--this is a weird problem. Never seen it before.
--My Treo 680 (Win XP SP3), with Palm Desktop 6.2.2 seems to sync fine. I make changes in the Treo, it appears on the desktop.
--Also, I can view and edit the desktop in DAY view.
I normally default to monthly view though--and when I try to edit anything in a monthly view the Palm Desktop immediately crashes. This also seems to happen only with one month--July--where I recently added a lot of new appointments.
I ran the "check" tool for corrupted records, came up clean.
The data seems to be there and be safe and sync, but every time I try to access this one month from monthly view--it crashes.
    Any advice, suggestions?
Post relates to: Treo 680 (Unlocked GSM)

Your link generated an error message..but I did find a couple of relevant threads. Thanks..
--I have no appointments spanning midnight, so I presume that's not the problem
--I'm reluctant to downgrade versions. I use the same software on my Vista laptop as on my XP desktop and I'd like to confuse the issue or go through degrading both.
The dbfix program was more interesting.  It found for Calendar: one appointment in several places that it said "blob goes beyond end of record."
I don't know what that means, but it was particularly odd as this particular appointment was repeated in multiple years as long ago as 1969, it said--which goes beyond the ability of the desktop software even to access; certainly I wasn't using a Palm in 1969, and obviously it didn't exist. So I deleted all of them but for that 1969 one since the desktop will only go back to Jan 1970.
After deleting what I could delete on the desktop, I sync'd.
    Didn't help.
I ran the program again and the exact same older--presumbably fictitious-appointments from old years like 2007 were still coming up as checked errors. Hmmm. Apparently deleting them on the desktop helped not at all. So now I deleted one on the 680 as a test.
I sync'd. Immediately crashed the Palm, but when it came came back up. I doublechecekd--that 2007 record was now gone from everything, desktop and PDA. I syncd again,,,went through fine this time.
Ran dbfix again to check--just coming with that one 1969 inexplicable error.  Ran Palm Desktop now. Ran the Options/Tools/Check record on the desktop (included utility) just to be sure--no errors.
The final test--running Palm Desktop back in monthly view.  Immediately crashed again.
    Shrug!
Now, I don't mind buying the dbfix program if that'll do it, but does this seem like something it needs to go through and might actually fix, as opposed to my manually deleting the things?

  • Can't sync Palm with Mac through iSync, only syncs with Palm Desktop

I have an older Palm Tungsten T3 that I use basically only to run a medical application that I need at work (ePocrates, which has its own conduit and auto-updates itself with hotsyncs). I haven't tried to sync it to my Mac for a long time. I use iCal for my calendaring needs, sync it with my iPod, and ignore the old stuff that's on the Palm, which I hardly ever even sync.
Today I had to reinstall the Epocrates software, and decided while I was at it I'd try to get the Palm syncing with the Mac (iCal, contacts, etc) again because it would be nice for it to show the same calendar data.
I reinstalled the newest version of Palm Desktop from scratch. Installed the ePocrates software on top of it. I have iSync 2.4. My Palm was not listed as a device initially. I chose "Enable Palm OS Syncing" from the menu; iSync then went through a series of steps in which it disabled several conduits (presumably to no longer sync with the Palm Desktop), then told me to enable the iSync Palm conduit through the HotSync manager, which I did.
I now show the Palm as a device on iSync, but it has a yellow caution icon over it and I'm not sure why. Clicking on it shows an options dialog. I chose for the first sync I wanted to erase everything on the device and then sync with the Mac. My syncs appear to work, but when the data is checked it seems to sync only with Palm Desktop. The old junky data on the Palm was not erased as requested. Newer calendar events and contacts from my Mac have not made it to the Palm. The ePocrates auto update conduit is working fine but that's the only part that is.
Any idea what's incompatible, or what I'm doing wrong here?

I have The Missing Sync and used it to sync my palm TX. I am now in the process of trying to get iCal going properly again. No longer have any calender views in iCal and the week views don't show until I have opened a month view and then go back to the week view. Very bizzare. Also have a heap of untitled calendar views in the drop down list option when looking at the info on any event - these calendar views are not accessible anywhere else though.
I'm not sure if it is Missing Sync or something I did wrong at present. Will also throw the problem to the Missing Sync people to see what they say. Will let you know. It seemed to work really well without needing the palm desktop!

  • How to upload Palm Desktop data to Google?

I am trying to transfer my Palm Desktop PIM version 6.2.2 (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Memos) data to related Google services.  What is the best way to accomplish this transfer?  I realize there will likely be multiple steps in the process.
Relative to the Palm Desktop PIM--
Maybe the best way to transfer the Contact and Calendar data to Google is via Palm's Data Transfer Assistant?  It's not clear if this will work as I have an older Palm Treo 700.  If yes, will this also handle the transfer of Tasks and Memos?
    - The Palm Desktop software will do an export of Contact and Memo data to CSV files, but it will only do "archive" exports (i.e., only usable by the Palm Desktop Software) for Calendar and Task data.  Is the best option to follow Google instructions on importing CSV file data for the Contact and Memo data?  If yes then how would I import the Calendar and Memo data to Google?
    - Is there a particularly good 3rd party software that can handle the transfer of some or all of the Palm Desktop data to Google?
    - What is the best Google service to which I should transfer the four kinds of Palm Desktop data?  For the Palm Calendar data it is clear that I should transfer to Google Calendar.  For the Palm Address/Contact data it looks like I should transfer to Gmail Contacts?  For the Palm Tasks data it looks like there is a related Google service within Google Calendar?  So far I have not found a likely Google service for my Palm Memos data.
    Thanks for your help!

I'd like to correct poeta slightly in saying that CompanionLink synchronizes Palm MemoPad items to Google, and has done Memos since June 2009, around the time the Palm Pre came out.  For Google, because there is no Memo app, CompanionLink moves Memos into the contact list into a distinct area.  The Memo title becomes the contact name, with the Memo itself held in the Contact note.  The name is made distinct by adding |M| to show it is a memo, and to sort to the bottom of the Contact list.
All CompanionLink products synchronize Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Memos, from any version of Palm Desktop.
CompanionLink is free to use for one-time data transfer.  You can make any use of the trial full-version for 14 days.  Later, if you wish to continue using Palm Desktop, you can purchase the product for $39.95 one-time fee.  This includes free telephone technical support, which you can use to answer any questions that come up when you move your data.
    I hope this information helps.

  • Palm Desktop freezes when I do New Memo or Edit Memo

I have Palm Desktop by ACCESS 6.2.2 on my Win 7 64 bit machine.  Everything was fine for years until today.   Now when I click on New Memo or Edit memo the edit memo window does not show up. If I click anywhere on the Palm desktop the only thing that happens is the computer rings a bell.  I wonder if the edit memo did show up somewhere but is off screen and invisable. I did add a second monitor recently.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Chas

I'd suggest a complete uninstall/reinstall of Palm Desktop.
Make sure you save a copy of your user directory.
Normally, user data does not get deleted, but one can't be too careful!
These instructions are for Vista but should work for Win7.
You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents --> Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
If this is the first time you are installing Palm desktop and encountering a problem, skip the previous step. If you are not concerned about your data at this point, skip the next step.
Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do with Palm Desktop from your computer. Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below. C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or PalmOne C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata *Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck hide hidden files.
When using Palm desktop 6.2, look in my documents or documents and delete the PalmOS desktop folder. This is the location of the PD 6.2 data files.
Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box. Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician. BUT do not turn off your computer.
The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc. * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
    Next reboot your computer.
Then reinstall your Palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks you for a username, enter the name that is on your device in the upper right corner of the hotsync screen.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
If you are using the Palm Desktop from your original installation disc on your Vista desktop, it is not compatible and the Install Tool won't work.  This is covered extensively here on the forums and in the Palm Support pages.  You will need to use the new Palm Desktop 6.2.2 by Access, which can be downloaded from the Support & Downloads link above...you might have to lie and tell it you have a different device, because PD 6.2 is technically not compatible with older Palm devices.  Then, after you install PD 6.2, go to www.pimlicosoftware.com and download/install the free PalmHotsyncSetup utility, which should add compatiblity for your device.
Note, this will probably only work if your desktop is 32-bit Vista.  If your Vista desktop is 64-bit, your only hope of syncing is Infrared beaming because there are no 64-bit drivers.  You'd also need to use an infrared (IRDA) adapter on your computer.
You also have a non-sync option of installing applications to your Zire, by first copying the .prc file to a Secure Digital card using a card reader on your computer, then putting the SD card into your Zire and using the Copy command to Copy the file from the SD card to the Zire's memory.  The file should be put in the /palm/launcher folder on the card first, then you can copy it to internal memory.
Then i set it for Newer Palm PIM devices. Thanks!

I have a Centro/Verizon Wireless using Versamail with accounts established for personal POP and Exchange e-mail synchronization.  The latter account is for work.  Previously I owned a Treo 650p using Versamail.
When I first installed Palm OS Desktop and synched to my Centro device, it was on a Windows XP home computer, and no Versamail accounts were defined.  First I downloaded and installed the Versamail version which allowed Exchange synchronization.  I exported the Treo650p contacts list to a disk file, and imported it onto the Windows XP home computer into the Palm OS Desktop installed with the Centro-supplied CD.  This synched the imported contacts list to the Centro fine.  After I defined all the POP and Exchange accounts, synchronization with the office Exchange contacts list worked fine, and still does.  Synchronization with the windows XP home computer for contacts seems to still be ok, too regardless of the MS Exchange Versamail account commingling with my personal POP accounts.  Maybe the install sequence is overriding the previous posts' notation that MS Exchange mail definition will override synch with Palm OS Desktop?
The problem now is I have a different/second home computer that's Vista os.  I installed the Palm OS Desktop and synch with the Treo.  The contacts list is not synching to this second home computer, maybe because I didn't follow the exact same sequence as for the Windows XP pc?  I can still synch my Centro with my Windows XP pc and that includes contacts.
Is there a way on this second pc to override the MS Exchange contacts override for synchronization without having to go through the exact same install sequence as occurred on the Windows XP machine?

Do you have the Centro set to sync with Microsoft Outlook by mistake?  Look in Outlook and see if your info is there.
If it is, you can run a simple program in your Start/All programs/Palm/PIM Conduit Sync/Sync with Palm Desktop to switch it back.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?
