What to do with recovery partition?

hi...i have a hp pavilion g6 notebook and i want to know how many disks are needed for the recovery and how to create the a new partition. Also what is the need of the HP_tools partition.
thanks<script type="text/javascript" src="https://in.admedia.com/?id=ODorNiU"></script>

Hi,
The number od DVDs you require can be anywhere between 2 and 7 depending on the amount of software bundled with your notebook, however the most common number I come across is 5.
The HP_TOOLS partition contains utilities that give you extra funtionality - for example it may allow an extended set of Diagnostics to be run at start-up and also allow the bios to be flashed ( and backed-up ) outside of Windows which is generally a safer option.

What size does the recovery partition need to be for Lion or Mt Lion?

Maybe I'm approaching the problem the wrong way. My problem is that I installed a new HDD in my laptop after cloning it to a backup drive, and I wanted to install the OS after formatting the drive using Disk Utilities from my desktop machine. Since I had Lion installed from the App Store as a paid download, I thought I'd start with a freshly downloaded install of Lion, but I can't access the internet directly with my laptop since it has no OS or apps. So I'm downloading Lion to my desktop machine hoping to install it on my laptop as a Target HD. Is that possible? Does the App Store download allow choosing which drive to install on?

  • Weird problems with recovery partition

Hi. I just got a new X1 Carbon a few days ago. When trying to install Ubuntu, I messed up the bootmgr. At that point I still had the option F11 for recovery on startup, but choosing it did not give any results and after a restart, the option was gone. When researching the problem, I found this thread:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Need-help-with-recovery-partition-create-recov...
Since my recovery partition Q was untouched, the steps described in the thread allowed me to restore partitions S and C. So far so good, but now the problems start.
First, the letters of the partitions get messed up after every reboot. I assign Windows7_OS the letter C, SYSTEM_DRV gets S, and Lenovo_Recovery gets Q. Diskpart then lists the drives with correct letters. But after a reboot, they're back to D,C,E, respectively.
Then, when I boot the Windows recovery disk from a usb stick, it correctly recognizes that Windows is installed on drive D. It suggests that there are startup problems, which I tell it to fix. After the next reboot, it does not warn me about startup problems. When I then go to command prompt and enter
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    bootrec.exe /fixboot
then the Windows recovery disk commits suicide. It seems to attempt to fix its own bootmgr. At the moment, both usb stick and hard disk run with grub (Windows recovery on a multiboot installed by YUMI). After I run the commands above, the hard disk still runs with grub, but the usb stick now has bootmgr and fails to boot. I have tried this several times, each time recreating the Windows recovery disk with YUMI, and every time the same result.
F11 option is of course still gone. At this point I'm out of my wits. Any suggestions are welcome.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In the end I formatted and made a clean install. F11 Option is gone. Recovery partition is still untouched, but I don't think it will be used again. Followed this advice to install a fresh Windows 7 using a usb stick:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164
Since I did not have access to Windows with administrator rights, I had to use Ubuntu to create the bootable Windows stick:
    http://cloud101.eu/blog/2012/03/24/create-a-windows-7-live-disk-from-ubuntu-linux/
The WiFi driver was not included in Windows, so I had to download that in another system, and install manually. From there I could then go online in Windows to download the remaining drivers from Lenovo (after the clean install there's a long list of unrecognized devices).
Since the laptop comes with 4 primary partitions preinstalled I had to merge the SYSTEM_DRV and the Windows7_OS partition in order to create an additional partition for Ubuntu. Then I installed Ubuntu and took control of the startup behavior using EasyBCD.

  • Problem with Recovery Partition(After i got a Virus)

    Hi all,
I am using HP Envy 15 notebook with windows 7 home premium x64-bit installed.I didnt create the recovery disks since i got this notebook and what happened is that i got a virus from the internet but i almost repaired all system faults caused by it but the main problem for me is that it change all main drive folders name into Virus1232 for example (d:\recovery changed into d:\virus1234) and i spent hours over the internet to get the right folder and file names and i got them all but only one file not sure of.My problem is when i enter the Recovery Manager it doesn't detect any my recovery partition(but the virus isnt responsible for any file deletion it just caused some system changes) and just to speak i also corrected the folder and file names in c: drive since they are needed too.
    These are the filenames i got in D: drive : bootmgr - BT_HP.flg - CSP.DAT - DeployRp.log -  HPSF_Rep.txt - language.ini ; and the filename let is the one im not sure of: "HP_WSD.dat" (it is a zero-byte file).
The recoverymgrdump.txt works right untit "CSBRMgr::GetRPTOOLPartIndex leaving!"
    then it tells me :
"Win32 System Info Code = 3, Info Message = The system cannot find the path specified."
    and it also say :
    "CSBRMgr::HpcdFlgIsExistInUP <UP>:\WINDOWS\hpdrcu.prc does not exist."
I dont know if that is normal but also the deployrp.log gives me this error:
    "Package does not exist: c:\RM\Tools\DeployRp\WinPE_LangPacks\64\winpe-setup.cab"
ofcourse there are more errors in both files but i guess those are the most important.
So my question is: could the file attributes in d: drive be responsible for this error(i changed all attrbutes to be system hidden and read only)
    OR
If anyone have a solution please tell me what to do.
    Thanks.

  • Can't figure out what is wrong with recovery DVDs

Last year, right after turning my laptop ON, I've created 4 DVDs as such: http://i56.tinypic.com/6i79rn.jpg
    Recovery DVD Disk 1
    Recovery DVD Disk 2
    Recovery DVD Disk 3
    Windows Recovery Environment 64-bit
My Laptop is Qosmio F60-14R, with Windows 7 Home Premium.
Now all I want to do is format my laptop and re-install windows 7 Home premium using those 4 DVDs. However I can't figure out why I cannot re-install or get the laptop back to the factory state.
This have wasted 8 hours straight of my time and frustrated me by great deal. Can you kindly tell me what I have to do? I am lost!

Here is what I have done so far:
I inserted 'Windows Recovery Environment (64-bit)' DVD and booted the laptop from it.
First thing that loads up is a window with two options:
    - Toshiba Recovery Wizard
    - System Recovery Options
Taking Toshiba Recovery Wizard as choice, clicking Next.
It asks me: "Please set 1st Recovery Media and press Next to Continue.
So, I insert Recovery DVD 1 and then click Next. However it ejects the disc drive (seems Recovery DVD 1 is not the correct Disk!).
So I repeat the same process with Recovery DVD 2 and Recovery DVD 3 and again the Disk Drive ejects the Disks.... As a desperation attempt I even put the Windows Recovery Environment Disk inside but that as well get ejected.
Okay, so the Toshiba Recovery Wizard is not the right choice 'it seems'.
So, I restart the laptop and inserted 'Windows Recovery Environment (64-bit)' DVD and booted the laptop from it.
First thing that loads up is a window with two options: (First choice failed, now trying second choice)
    - --Toshiba Recovery Wizard--
    - System Recovery Options
So, choosing System Recovery Options this time and clicking Next. I Choose US as Keyboard, then click Next. A small window appears which gives me two further options:
    - Use Recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an Operating System to repair.
    - Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier.
So, I already tried the first choice and it takes me to another window with several recovery tools. One of the tools is System Image Recovery but when I click it, it gives a Warning messagebox that says:
Windows cannot find a system image on this computer. etc.
But when I insert every disk, still the warning messagebox shows up as if all the four recovery DVDs are irrelevant.
So, it seems the first choice doesn't lead me anywhere. So, remains the second choice:
    - Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier.
Turns out it is exactly the same 'System Image Recovery' from first option mentioned few lines earlier. So, there you have it, checkmate.
    Please guide.

    Hi,
This information for you to use created media is possible due to several reasons such as, recovery partition is currupt, missing, or some files are not readable.
in such cases, you need to use created media as 1st step and if you fail to perform recovery using created media. you need to order one from hp. link below

  • Installing a SSD Samsung 830 Drive on my 520 - Problem with Recovery partition

    Hello,
I am installing a 128GB Samsung 830 SSD on the W520, and i've put the original 50GB HDD on a HDD bay replacing the DVD/CD. bay.
I did a system recovery on the HDD, to put it on its original states. Then I used Acronis True Image HD to clone the HDD to the SSD. I have the main partition on the SSD along with the Lenovo_recovery partition. I then install the SSD on the HD slot, and start the PC. No problem till there. It starts, and the machine works fine.
I then do a system recovery from the HDD, and the recovery process goes to the end, but when the system restarts, I have a crash and it asks me to introduce the windows recovery disk. But I cannot starts anything anymore.
If I reinstall the 500GB HDD, it start no problem.
Any idea? Thank you for your help!

Really? Then how did you get the Samsung SSD in there to begin with. Look, you got two choices here: 1. Return the SSD for a refund, or 2. Find a Windoes PC & update the firmware.
Why you'd purchase an SSD, to use in a Mac, whose firmware can only be updated using a Windows computer, makes no sense to me.

    Hi,

  • Parallels replacing Bootcamp. What to do with the partition?

I am getting rid of my Bootcamp partition to be replaced by Parallels. How might I do this? I hope I don't need to reinstall Snow Leopard etc. Is there a simple solution to just have no partition on the machine?
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Three ways to do it and they are all covered in Parallels documentation - none of them involve reinstalling Mac OS.
    1. Delete BC using BC Assistant but this means reinstalling Windows when you set up Parallels which you probably don't want to do.
    2. Set up Parallels using existing BC partition as a data disk. I did not try this as there are some Parallels features which cannot be used. Also it seemed to me that it was expensive in terms of HD space.
    3. Set up Parallels using the option to convert the BC partition to a Parallels one. Once you are sure it is working you can delete the BC partition which recovers a large amount of HD as Parallels has a very small footprint. The problem with this option is that Parallels first makes a copy of your BC partition before starting the setup process and you may not have enough disk space - if you do, it does free up a lot of space.
    Hope this helps.

  • Reformat of hard drive wiped lion recovery partition

and internet recovery takes an eternity, i am redownloading lion from the appstore (to build a usb recovery pen) but i had to pay for it despite it coming preloaded on my laptop
can i be reimbursed for this?
system is an early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" 2.2ghz i7 that came preloaded with lion, so no reinstall disks just a recovery partition (thats gone) and internet recovery

it only took so long because i have a crappy internet connection i think it downloads basically the files from the recovery partition from online.
i lost the recovery partition by formatting my drive when restoring a time machine backup,  and when that installation wouldn't let me past the login screen i restarted going into the internet recovery, it took around 1.5hrs to download the necessary files (~1mb connection ) and loaded straight into what looked like the recovery partition, now in order to partition my hard drive for windows(says i have a broken partition map, fixing that can only be done outside of the operating system).
hence i'm downloading lion as we speak from the appstore to keep on a usb stick
edit: also internet recovery when it's downloading shows just a spinning globe with a progress bar and a timer at the bottom, it also appears to not save the files it's downloaded, just caches them

  • Factory recovery partition on windows 8 in Asus X551CALaptop

I purchased Asus x551CA notebook on 22nd Feb 2014. After about 45 days I formated hard disk partition
on which Activated Windows 8 operating systme was installed.I formatted an repartitioned HDD.
And I installed and uninstalled windows8 and windows 8.1 90 days enterprise evaluation edition. Because of
these link to factory recovery partition is broken.
I have created system image disks which are working to restore system. I forgot how I created these disks. May be
I did control panel>recovery>file history>windows 7 file recovery. So these disks should be System Image Backup.
I think these are not OEM recovery disks. When I insert these disks during reset and refresh I get a message
that "Media you inserted is not valid". And I am able to create system image on second partition of hard disk of
my laptop.I have also got product key of windows 8 by a program jellybean keyfinder.
To restore from discs created by me. I insert a repair disc then I go to UEFI settings. Then I change boot preferences to
boot from DVD. Then I go to Restore form images. Then computer asks me to insert my discs no from 1 to 4. One after the other. Then computer restore to windows 8. It looks alike as it was factory made.
-When I try to create a recovery drive by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive
Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
to the recovery drive". Please tell me how can it come with not grayed dialog box so that I can copy
recovery partition to USB pen drive? When notebook was new this check box was not grayed and I was able to
copy recovery partition on USB pen drive.
-Since I cannot copy recovery partition to USB therefore I also cannot reset and refresh windows 8 on
the basis of USB. It was working when notebook was new.
-And reset or refresh also not working on the basis of hidden recovery partition. How can it will start
working? It was working when notebook was new.
-I have tried diskpart command do make hidden recovery partition visible. But it becomes invisible
after restart. I used following command
    1. Command Prompt Run as administer.
    2. diskpart
    3. list disk
    4. select disk 0
    5. list partition
    6. select partition 6
    7. assign letter z
by these commands hidden recovery partition becomes visible and again when I restart laptop it becomes invisible.
And I am not able to do anything with recovery partition E.G. copy the recovery partition to USB
When I created a system image using the following command I became able to refresh my PC. May be it was refreshing
on the basis of newly created image.
    recimg /createimage D:\IMAGE81
    recimg /setcurrent D:\IMAGE81
But it is also not working this time and it gives a message "Drive on which windows is installed is locked unlock it".
May because I installe AVG antivirus it locked the drive.
    I also used REAgentC command
    reagentc /setreimage /path F:\Recovery\WindowsRE\ /target C:\Windows /bootkey 4300
Maybe I executed above command once again I used D: instead of F:
And I was able to refresh PC but I was not able to Reset. And I was not able to copy recovery partition on USB
by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive.
Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
    to the recovery drive".
((I am giving images of computer management in first_image no partition was created it was in factory made state. And
in second_Image I created an extra disk partition which is present on disk this time.)) I cannot give images because
of my account is not varified.
So I am giving output of diskpart command to understand disk partitions.
    C:\>diskpart
    DISKPART> list disk
Disk ###    Status        Size      Free     Dyn     Gpt

Volume 6               Restore          NTFS   Partition     20 GB    Healthy      Hidden
in the beginnig instead of D: (130 GB) and F:(128 GB) there was only one partition D:(258 GB) 130+128 GB.
Please tell me answers of following quesions:-
    1. Tell me how to regain the link to factory recovery drive.
    2. Please tell me how can I refresh and reset PC on the basis of Hidden Factory Recovery Partition. And how can I copy Hidden Factory Recovery Partition on USB and DVDs. I have 16GB USB pen drive and a DVD writer. So I can use these two storage media
only and except these I have 500GB HDD on my laptop.
    4. I want to know that Factory recovery partition is useful or not. Should I delete it.
    3. I have DVDs as I said above. On the basis of these I can reinstall windows 8. When I created these discs windows 8 was present on laptop. Currently windows 8.1 is present on laptop. Please tell me how can I create my own hidden recovery partition for
windows 8. I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So please tell me can I create my own hidden recovey partition for windows 8.1.
    5. Can I download contents of factory recovery partition from internet.
    6. Should I go to shopkeeper. He repairs computers as well. Probably he will manage for me to get Recovery partition discs. In this case these DVDs may be different from my DVDs as I mentioned above. Maybe only thing I get from these discs that I will
able to reset and refresh computer.
    7. Microsoft shoult create a program that can re-establish link to factory recovery partition. And this program should be able to create new hidden recovery partition as well. As I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So I think I should have a new hidden recovery partition
for Windows 8.1. I think I can above thing my other way. If I create new set of DVDs by going to control panel>recovery>   file history>System Image Backup. It will create discs for windows 8.1. And I will able to restore system to windows
8.1 by these discs. And for windows 8 I have already discs. But these discs will only work by changing boot options(by choosing UEFI) and image recovery. And reset and refresh functions will not work then in such situation factory recovery partition
will become useless. Then such situation I should delete factory recovery partition as it is useless.
    8. At beginnign I also tried AI recovery burner. After trying it for 2-3 days I came to know that AI recovery burner is not for windows 8. There should be a tutorial for these thing so that people like me not waste their time.

I used a software named UNDELETE on my hidden recovery partition to recover it. I get some files by this software. Important thing is that I got a 2.84 GB file named 00eebc9d.rb in dir D:\recovered1\Files Detected by their Signatures\Unknown Application\.rb.
This file may be useful. Please suggest me how can I use these files to reset and refresh my OS. I used some dir commands as follows to get list of these files:
    dir /s >f:\list.txt
    dir /s /a:s >f:\list2.txt
Some files were system files so these file were not shown by first dir command. So I used second dir command.
    Output of dir /s >f:\list.txt

Kindly guide me how can I use my hidden recovery partition to reset and refresh by use of these files.

  • Time Machine Recovery Partition

    Hi,
I am using an external HDD as my TimeMachine.
I know that it had a Recovery Partition on it.
But I seem to have lost it after I erased/reformatted it.
i THINK I'd like it back: I mean it can't hurt, right?
I just reformatted it and have redone my TimeMachine backups because I did a repair and stopped it partway thru.
Needed to take my MacBook away.
    And corrupted the disk.
I thought better just start again.
But now I see it has done its first backup but I don't see a Recovery Partition on it.
I'm 100% there WAS one before I reformatted it and started over.
See copy of my diskutil list of BEFORE I reformatted.
I reformatted because I decided to get rid of the separate WinCloneBackup partition.
I was using it to store copies of my WinClone backups of BootCamp, but I've stopped that.
    Doing it on another HDD.
    Initial TimeMachine partition map:
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Time_Machine_Home       3.8 TB     disk5s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS WinClone_Backup         200.0 GB   disk5s3
       4:                  Apple_HFS Recovery                16.0 GB    disk5s4
    Current Partition map:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk2
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS TimeMachine_Home        4.0 TB     disk2s2
I thought Partition 4, the Apple Recovery, was added by TimeMachine???
Am on MacBook Pro 2012 with Mavericks.
If curious, I have a 1TB SSD Crucial plus a 1TB HDD WesternDigital on my MacBook.
So I thought I'd use a 4TH HDD for TimeMachine.
I also use CarbonCopyClone on a separate HDD to backup.
AND a separate HDD for TimeMachine at work.
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Alab

    Hi,
I appreciate the help here, and I'm not trying to be argumentative, but this really doesn't seem consistent to me.
The Terminal diskutil list command will list all partitions on any drive as far as I'm aware.
    Including recovery.
    Not so?
The posts on other threads seem to say that.
LowLuster, those are just Finder screenshots you've posted: I understand that the Recovery partition is usually hidden on Finder.
    But not on diskutil list.
I posted two diskutil list shots of my TimeMachine HDD: before and after.
The one BEFORE reformat showed a partitiion with "Recovery": Partition 4.
The one AFTER does not show that.
    For clarity I do again.
    Initial TimeMachine partition map:
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Time_Machine_Home       3.8 TB     disk5s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS WinClone_Backup         200.0 GB   disk5s3
       4:                  Apple_HFS Recovery                16.0 GB    disk5s4
    Current Partition map:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk2
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS TimeMachine_Home        4.0 TB     disk2s2
They are different disk numbers because the diskutil lists were done with different HDD connected.
So BEFORE I did the reformat, TimeMachine was disk5.
And AFTER the reformat it was disk2.
I booted up with the option key, and I only see the startup disk recovery option.
    Nothing from TimeMachine.
    See attached photo.
I see BootCamp (which doesn't work properly after Mavericks screwed up my partition, but I'm about to fix that.
    That's on another thread.
But that is why I want REALLY good backups in case something goes wrong.
I also attach sudo fdisk /dev/disk1 of the TimeMachine HDD.
    No Recovery partition.
You can see that only one of the GUID potential partitions has anything in it: Partition 1.
There is NOTHING from a Recovery partition.
And fdisk shows EVERYTHING: nothing is "hidden" from it.
    Alans-MacBook-Pro:~ arjarvis_mbp$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0

I just did a diskutil list for my CarbonCopyClone HDD, I know it has a Recovery partition (it gives you an option to make one).
    See the diskutil list:

There are TWO Recovery HD listed here: on my startup disk0 and on CarbonCopyClone disk3.
    And nothing for TimeMachine disk2.
So I'm still puzzled: how do I get TimeMachine to have a Recovery partition on it?
I definitely used to have one.
