WHAT TO DO WITH USED POWERBOOK G4

Hello-
I am very new to these forums, so I apologize if this is not the appropriate place to post this. If it is not and you can suggest where to do so, I would appreciate it. But I'll give it a shot.
I have a Powerbook G4 that is about 4 years old and I would like to sell it. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to where the best place may be to do this, whether it's via the internet, an Apple store or even someplace where I live, in NYC. Thanks.

Hi, leegero. I strongly recommend

  • What's wrong with my Powerbook?

    Hi.
My PB used to work just fine. There has only been one significant change. I had my hard drive fail several months ago, and got the stock 80 GB one replaced with a 100 GB drive (and even upgraded it to 7200 RPM). The work was done by a licensed service center, and the drive is of good quality. The computer starts and restarts with no problem, back-ups proceed with no problem, and my computer works fine in every other respect.
The problem: The pinwheel. All the time. Every other task.
Why is my computer operating so slow? I just ran several bandwidth tests, and my average was around 1 Mbps. Last night, i was scoring above 2 Mbps. I can run Disk Warrior, but only 3 or 4 percent of my drive will be out-of-order, and the pinwheeling will continue.
I'm running OSX 10.3.9, and need to continue for awhile for ProTools reasons.
Any idea of what's wrong here?
    Thanks,
    Goob.

But is the RAM working? Are both modules being recognized?
Disk space isn't an issue here, then.
I think it would be a good idea to work with an Activity Monitor window open to try and see if you can recognize which process(es) is (are) causing your system to hang.
I would suggest that you boot from your Install & Restore DVD, and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk task.
Reboot into your internal drive and repair permissions from Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
Download, install and run a Panther-friendly version of MacJanitor.
Download, install and run a Panther-friendly version of either Cocktail or OnyX or yasu to clean all of your caches (user, system, fonts, etc.), then restart your machine.
I might also suggest that if this regimen doesn't help, you boot into your Install & Restore DVD again, this time holding down the Option key, and choose Apple Hardware Test from the options. Run the extended suite of tests and see if any hardware errors are reported.
If, after all of this, you are still experiencing the same problem without being able to attribute it to a particular process or application, or to RAM or other hardware issues, to cache corruption, etc., then you should consider reinstalling your software onto a freshly formatted, zeroed HD.
Let us know what you find.

  • What is up with using Adobe stuff with Leopard 10.5.2?

All of my new Adobe DS Premium stuff is crashing upon launch suddenly and I'm told that there is a bug on Apple's side with compatibility here. Nobody's "home" at Adobe right now; I have tons of work to get done. I purchased their Design Suite Premium package and up until a week or so ago, everything worked just fine. Today an update came along - I installed it per the instructions, and I am still not only finding it impossible to launch the program but the dialog box pops up from Apple every time offering to send a message to Apple re the problem (and again, on the Adobe site, there is some noise there about this being something Apple is working on). Does ANYbody have any insight into this and/or at LEAST a workaround???? I've already run that CS 3 clean thing of Adobe's several times and run DU. Everything else on my system works fine.

    What update did you install?
I see there are about 7 updates available since the last time I updated.
adobe reader 8 language support, adobe air update for flash, adobe bridge 2.1.1 update, start meeting 1.0.1, flash lite update, adobe asset services and adobe version cue3.1.0.
I don't have version cue installed anyway.
I turned off auto updating just for the reason you opened this discussion.
I have found doing any updates with any unnecessary programs or processes running
is a big risk because of locked and in use files not getting updated properly.
This may be what has happened in your case.
I update all software in safe mode if possible. If that isn't practical for some reason, I
shut down all unnecessary programs and processes before updating and do a disk check.
It only takes one corrupt file to shut you down or cripple an application or applications.

  • What is wrong with my Powerbook?

    Hello all
A couple of weeks ago my hard drive died on me so I took it to my Mac Guy so he could put in a new one. Since getting it back my Battery life has got really bad and there is a knocking noise which is making me think the Logic Board might be on the way out.
Does anyone have any Ideas what the problem could be?
Any advice on how to fix the problem would be most grateful.

    Batlamb:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The knocking sound is more likely to be coming from the HDD than elsewhere. A logic board issue will not result in a knocking sound. Take the computer back to your MacGuy and have him take a look.

  • HT1414 When I downloaded the new softwared to my iphone, it put a password on my restrictions.  This new operating system is terrible.  Now it sounds like I will need to wipe my phone to get the restricton password off.  What was wrong with using icloud p

I guess the title says it all.  So am i correct that I will need to wipe my phone and loose all my contacts that I have spent years accumulating along with all my other data?  There were no passwords on this phone before downloaded the updated operating system.  This makes no sense.  Find my phone is very sporatic with this new operating system.  Jumps back and forth between phones on its own.  I am so frustrated with Apple!

When I downloaded the new softwared to my iphone, it put a password on my restrictions
No it didn't.  You did, whether you realize it or not.  Restrictions can only be enabled by user interaction.  They don't just turn on by themselves.
So am i correct that I will need to wipe my phone and loose all my contacts that I have spent years accumulating along with all my other data?
Why do'nt you just restore the latest backup that was made prior to you applying the update?  Problem solved?

  • Help with using an external USB hard drive to start up a powerbook?!

Hello ppl of the apple support communities,
My uncle recently gave me an Apple Powerbook G4 with a bad internal hard drive and the Mac OS X installation disk that came with the machine! In my country Greece to repair this powerbook costs about 140$ that i dont have! I need your help! I connected the external USB disk to 2 USB ports, and started the Mac OS X 9.2 installation! I went to Utilities Menu checked the disk erase tab and at Volume Format i used ''Mac OS Extended(journaled)'' and checked the box ''Install Mac OS 9 Driver'' and then click Erase. However the box for the ''Install MAc OS 9 disk drivers remained checked.(Seems like they cant be installed!)Then when i go to the partition tab ad at ''Options...'' i cant find this GUID thing and i can only choose between ''Apple Partition Scheme'' and ''PC Partition Scheme''!!

GUID partition scheme is required for Intel-based systems. The Powerbook would use the Apple partition scheme.
While it's probably what was provided with the Powerbook, I wouldn't bother with OS X 9.2. If you plan to use it to connect to the internet, there are so many advances that have taken place since 9.2, especially in handling web sites and security. And some web sites rely on newer versions of plug-ins, like Flash, to name one. You should also expect that watching online video's will be difficult, as even the last Powerbooks have difficulties with some video's.
    Good luck with your project!

  • What is function of USB cable that came with 15" PowerBook G4 Combo?

Here's a really easy way to score 10 points.
Among the cables that shipped with my 15" PowerBook G4 Combo and the accompanying 20" Cinema Display two years ago is a USB cable with a silver cord. At the other end from the USB plug is a black triangular plug with a square metal end encased in plastic. (I can't get the plastic off, so I assume it's part of the plug and not protective casing for shipping.)
Can somebody please tell me what this cable is for? I never found anything in the documentation that explained what it was, and since I've apparently never needed it, I don't know. I looked at the Forums for the 15" G4 but didn't know what search terms to use, and a Google Image search didn't turn up anything I recognized.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   15"

Oh, jeez. And I thought this would be simple.
Alas, I can't remember whether it came with the PB or the display, but I think Michael might be right (more pyramidal than triangular). Head-on: mouth is the right shape, doesn't have what looks like a notch in his drawing.
The tech at AppleCare also thought it sounded like a printer/scanner USB cable. It's definitely not one of the short connector critters in the article a brody refers to (but it was fun looking at the pictures).
I did a scan and have a clear picture of the plug, but no website to put it on; I'm also not sure what a brody's instructions refer to. (Look at it this way, if I knew stuff like that I probably wouldn't be posting a topic like this.)
So I have another idea: I live near an Apple store, and I'll go there soon, and if someone there can identify it (based on past experience, I'm not so sure), I'll come back here and then we'll know.
    Thanks to all. Anon.

  • TS3147 Is there a recommended Printer to use with a Powerbook G4 Laptop?  It has OS 10.5

I have a Powerbook G4 Laptop and recently bought a new printer that works with my MacBook which has an Intel processor.  However, due to the operation system on my Powerbook, which is OS X 10.5, the new printer is incompatible with the Powerbook.  My husband uses the Powerbook and I use the Macbook. With this new HP printer, the Powerbook no longer is able to print documents.  Wondering if there are any printers out there that connect to a USB port 2.0 on my Powerbook G4..
    Thank you,
    Debbie

Locate a suitable printer for which there are available printer drivers that will work with 10.5.8. You will need to check mfgr. websites to see what drivers are available. Ask the vendor if they know if the printer works with your model and OS X version.

  • Any suggestions what to do with an old G3 Powerbook??

I have a 7 year old G3 Powerbook? Any suggestions what to do with it? It only has an 8 GB hard drive. But it runs 10.4.10. I've read somewhere you can turn it into a second monitor for editing.

Can't use it as a second monitor...dunno where you heard that.
How about do the Letterman "things you drop from a 5 story building?" Kidding.
I have one of those...the first edition ICEbook...the non-toilet seat ones, right? Well, my kids use it and I have FCP 4.5 installed on it for them to play with. Not that they have. All they do is research for school and online video games. Darn them.
Dunno if a school will take it. Hey...give it to a homeless person. Introduce them to the World Wide Web!
    Sorry...not helpful...

  • PC cards and routers for use with Titanium powerbook

I recently purchased a used powerbook g4 for my wife's writing and installed OS-X 10.4. It did not come with an airport card. I already have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router which works fine with my iMac G5 (ethernet connection) and the PC notebook in the house. I have tried using an Orinoco 802.11a/b pcmia card, TP-Link TL-WN510G card, and a U.S. Robotics 100 Mbps 802.11g card, in the powerbook, and can not make a connection. The Orinoco card was recommended as Mac compatible.
Is my problem likely to be with the router or the PC card? Would purchasing a new router solve my problems? What would you suggest?

  • What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs?

    Hi!
What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs? Sell it for almost nothing? Give it away to somebody?..
I just thought you may share some ideas about it!..
It was my first portable mac (before I had a LCII), but I have to move away from a place and I have a lot of stuff..
    Thanks!!

    Give it away to somebody?..
Yes, why not? As you know, this computer is perfectly good for word processing. With a modem, it can be used for email and light web surfing during travels. Someone might even want to try to use it wirelessly.

  • I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC that uses an external storage device to a new PC (Windows 7) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with new iTunes 11.  How do I do this??  What folder does iTunes use?

I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC (Windows Vista Home Basic) that uses an external storage device to store the files to a new PC (Windows 7 Starter) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with the new iTunes 11.  How can I accomplish this successfully?    What folder does iTunes use to store the data in?  I've tried several things.  Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered.  It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer.  This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.
See also: Make a split library portable.

What cable can I use to transfer data from a 2008 MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.
