What to do with your iPhoto library after "upgrading" to Photos?

I just updated OS 10.10.3 (Yosemite) and saw the Photos app installed. Also, the iPhoto app's icon is gone from the dock, but the app still remains the application folder. I started the Photos App and went through the library transition. My library is very larger, around 172 GB. Now that I have Photos installed, can I remove the iPhoto app and its library or do I need to keep because I now have a Photos library and an iPhotos library. I do get nervous about deleting libraries, so any advice or warnings would be nice. Thanks.

Keep it for now. Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support.

  • What to do with old iPhoto library after migration to Photos

After migration to Photos my hard drive is maxed out. I want to move the 15gigs old iPhoto library to an external drive to free some space as some have suggested. Others here have said you can just trash the old library. There must be a reason 10.10.3  was designed to retain the iPhoto library. Trash it--really? Another suggestion was to put my 15 gigs on a flash drive. So the question is: does Photos need to be able to see the iPhoto library as it would if on an external drive connected to my Time Machine?

Thanks for your reply but I'm still confused as to how I lost over 10Gigs of HD space after the migration. I understand the conversion is supposed to create more space, not less.  When I look in the pictures folder in Finder, I see 2 LIbrarys, iPhoto and Photos, each of them approx 15 Gbs. according to the Get Info menu.  I guess what I don't understand is if the iPhotos Library is not needed and is moved to an external drive why that wouldn't free that amount of space.
Also, if "optimization" is supposed to move "some" high res images to the cloud to make room on the HD, how is it that I find myself with only 1gb left on my HD? What is the criteria that triggers "optimization" and how much room can we expect it to shoot for? There seems to be a variety of answers on this subject, many of them sound like guesses. Apple's explanation is vague about how it works, so hopefully someone has the accurate, in depth scoop on this.

MMy labels have disappeared from every picture in my iPhoto library after upgrading to work with Yosemite.

I didn't do anything to the LaCie when I got it.
    Then that's likely the issue.
Select the drive on the Desktop and go File -> Get Info. You can find out the format in that window:

  • Im having a problem with my iphoto library.  all of photos are outlines in gray with black background.

My iphoto library appears as white dotted outlines and black background.  I can only see the photos if i am scrolling?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto does not recognize iPhoto Library after upgrade

Machine:  iMac, OS 10.8.2, iPhoto 9.4.1
Symptoms:  After upgrading iPhoto to 9.4.1 I cannot open my iPhoto library of some 30,000 photos.  I can see the library in the finder, but iPhoto doesn't want to link to it.  It did show in the library pane briefly the Events and Pictures at the full count, but then dropped to zero.
Actions:  Opened iPhoto with the OPTION key to specify which library iPhoto should use.  Not effective.
Opened iPhoto with the COMMAND AND OPTION keys and ran all actions from repairing permissions, rebuilding thumbnails, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database.  Results:  3 Events and 265 Photos.  32,577 photos in Trash.
What steps will restore the Library to its original state?  Will this restore meta-data, captions, events, dates, etc?

    Try this. Worked for me.
    - turn off your router
    - turn off you Mac's after removing all available printers
    - turn off all iDevices
    - do a factory reset of your printer remove all cables min. 30 sec.
    - turn on your router first
    - ran the network set up wizard
    - give your printer also a new name like "DeskJet 2015"
Something which you don't have used before.
    - turn on your Mac's and add your printer
    - turn on your iDevices at least.
    Should work after these steps.
It worked for me including all iDevices.

  • Can't open iPhoto library after upgrade

I upgraded iphoto after install OSX Mavericks recently but I can't open iphoto library with the newer version.
(It says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.") So I want to know if I select to upgrade, my photos will be lost or not. Do I need to back up before?

Of course you need to back up first. You should always have a back up before you upgrade or update anything.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    Then click upgrade.

  • CANNOT OPEN iPHOTO LIBRARY AFTER UPGRADE

I had a routine upgrade message last night so hit Install.  My iPhoto logo changed from the yellow with palm tree to a new one with a blue background and a flower.  There was an error message during the update of my library (24000 images) and now says my library is corrupt and should be opened from back up.  I plugged in my EHD with the back up, previously there had been the iPhoto Icon with the palm tree.  That had gone and was a blank page logo.  I hit open and was told it needed to upgrade my library to work with the new iPhoto.  This is what had happened on the MacBook Pro (Mar 2011) and failed during upgrade.
I have a time machine from 10 days ago and I can afford to go back to then as I can still back up any work not in my iPhotos library.  Photos saved in folders outside the library work fine.  I use Adobe CS5 Photoshop for my main images but all my shoots automatically store in IPhoto library.  Could I be storing them better?
    Thanks
    Jules

Back up corrupted to, thank God I got apple care, they talked me through!  I opened iPhoto icon from the dock while holding CMD and ALT, I got four options, I tried all of them and after three had failed I did the rebuild option that said only to use after the other had failed.  Worked a treat.

  • HT204476 Can I delete my iPhoto Library after migrating to Photos?

My iPhoto Library is about 450 GB in size. This morning I migrated it to Photos. After a reboot my Mac started complaining that I have no disk space left (I have a 1 TB drive in my MacBook Pro). It appears that the Photos migration process duplicated my iPhoto Library and I now have two photo libraries, each measuring 450 GB, based on looking at the Finder's Info windows for each library. But I understand there's some fancy, convoluted new file storage methodology being used with the new Photos library, so I'm not clear on precisely where my actual, precious photo files are.
My compulsion is to just delete the old iPhoto Library, since I've migrated to Photos and I won't be using iPhoto anymore. But there's this niggly feeling that Apple had made it more complicated than that, that I now must have an iPhoto Library and a Photos library taking up space on my hard drive and totally confusing my file management practices. I was hoping this transition would be easy, clear, and safe but Apple has made it complicated and worrisome for some reason.
Bottom line: can I delete my old iPhoto Library? Or would this be a catastrophic action?

I have the exactly the same problem. But when upgrading it created in total three libraries?!!!? This is very unlike Apple to do this. What to do?

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Cannot open older pictures in iPhoto library after upgrade

    Hey there!
I just updated my iPhoto from 6.? to iPhoto '08. When I open it, I can access events & pictures that are almost a year old, but no older. When I open the iPhoto "package" on my desktop, I find all of my older photos, still intact. How can I access them from iPhoto '08? I can't import them, because when I open the import option, the iPhoto library is greyed out (un-select-able). Do I need to create a new library?

I think part of my problem is that I edit in Photoshop & "save as"
    This is unnecessary.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends +a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
The problem with renaming in iPhoto is that it doesn't change the name of the original file, unlike in Bridge.
But are you trying to rename the Picture or rename the File? In iPhoto (and in photo apps in general) you add a title to the Photo, not rename the file.
And if I edit in Photoshop & "save as" under a different name, does that show up in my iPhoto library, or do I have to import it?
If you create a new file you need to save it to the desktop and afterwards import it.
If you want to have different versions then duplicate the pic before sending it to Photoshop. Or use Aperture.
Can I do that iPhoto? I'm thinking I could create a different library on my external, import older photos into that library, then remove it from the laptop library, is that possible?
Yes. Easiest and best way: use iPhoto Library Manager to create the second library and then move the selected pics/albums/events to the archive library. It's the only way to do this and preserve all the versions and all the metadata.
If I put a photo in the iPhoto trash & empty the trash, does that remove that photo from my laptop for good?
    Yes.
Am I correct in assuming that the "modified" images are copies that iphoto has made & any editing I save is on those images?
Close but not quite. When you edit a pic either with or via iPhoto, then iPhoto creates a copy of the original and saves the edits on the copy. If you subsequently re-edit with iPhoto it reverts to the original and applies a sum of the edits, so you avoid generational loss.
So if I edit a photo and save it (not "save as"), but I want to revert to the original, iPhoto just accesses the copied image from the Original folder?
It reverts to the Original file and destroys the modified copy.

  • Cannot read remote iPhoto library after upgrade

I have an iPhoto library on a remote hard drive which was completely readable and accessible prior to the recent upgrade of iPhoto.  I can access and read the library on my MacBook, but now, cannot read the iPhoto library on the remote drive.  It will not convert to the new 'format' to allow it to be readable.  Help.

I had the same problem. Luckily, my remote drive was connected to another Mac Server. I used Screen Sharing to login and open iPhoto remotely to upgrade my libary. Unfortunately, I was not able to. It hung for days not being able to upgrade. What I then did was copy the library to another location. I then created a new library and imported all my photos from the old library. I now had a new library I could work with much to the loss of my previous database. The trouble does not end though. I tried remotely accessing the new iPhoto library and iPhoto would continuously crash and/or was extremely slow. I thought then that maybe it might be because the enormity of photos I had. I decided I would break up my photo library then by year. I started with 2013. Once I'd created my 2013 library, I tried to access this remotely. I had the same problem. iPhotos was extremely slow and volatile. Keep in mind, this is an all new iPhoto library with only my 2013 photos in it. It's lean and new and still causing problems.
... skip to the end ...
I installed picasa. I'm happy. Sorry iPhoto. I wanted to make it work with you.

  • I have lost all my iPhoto events after upgrading to Photos Version 1.0 (209.52.0)

I have lost all my iPhoto events. Or, am I missing something here?
I just upgraded to the new Photos from iPhoto on my iMac. The new Photos app imported and reorganized my photos by date and mixed all of my previous well organized iPhoto events into a jumbled lot.
How can I re-sort these photos back into an Event type of organization?
I think I had several thousand events.

Moments are the new Events.  All of your events in iPhoto are not Moments in Photo and were also brought over as an album. Open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination and look in the folder titled "iPhoto Events".
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

  • Cant attach photos to email after "upgrade" to Photos...why?

    HI,
So recently Apple updated (hijacked) my iPhoto app on my computer with their "new and improved" Photos software.  While is good to have some long needed features like a useful file system, I seem to have lost some core functionality.  I use Outlook as part of Office for Mac and can no long attach photos to emails.  Yes, I know Apple and Microsoft hate each other and neglect if not sabatoge each other's stuff, but attaching a photo/image to Outlook email seems to be basic functionality Apple left out.
PLease discuss this and let me know if I'm missing something simple or how I might be able to fix this major problem.  Otherwise how do I downgrade my software to the last iPhoto version so I can once again send an image over email.
i Realize that Apple may not have done this intentionally, but I never volunteered to be a beta tester for their new software.  Apple is niave if they think people don't use MS Office on Macs.  BTW, I have 3ipads, 3 macs, 2iphones and just purchased 4 watches...I hope there is an easy fix for this.
    THanks!
    Jeff

Nothing was hijacked. iPhoto is still on your Mac in the Applications folder. It was just replaced in the Dock with Photos during the 10.10.3 installation.  If you were running iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use it with your iPhoto Library.
It's MS's responsibility to update Outlook so it can work with Yosemite and Photos, not Apple's  The same goes for all of the may other applications. It's the developers of those apps that must do the job. So don't blame Apple for their dropping the ball.
And remember upgrading to Yosemite was entirely voluntary on your part.
If you don't have iPhoto 9.6.1 then you can get it by following Terence Devlin's method in this post:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Upgrading to iPhoto '08 - what's going wrong with my iphoto Library

    Hi,
I would appreciate your advice/knowledge on this problem.
==> Short Description of my problem:
I can't recover the keywords associated with my pictures. I am asked to import my pictures although I choose to open my previous iPhoto Library after converting to iPhoto 08.
    ==> What I did:
    1. I recently upgraded my mac to Leopard, and then to iPhoto'08. When opening for the 1st time iPhoto '08, I selected my iPhoto Library (as I held the option key while opening iPhoto).
    2. I then get the message: “The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library.” I clicked on the "Upgrade" button
    3. My Mac then loaded/created ALL my previous albums and smart albums (including the most recent ones). It loaded pictures up to April 2005. BUT then, it prompted me with the following message : "5584 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that are not a part of this photo library. Would you like to import them?". I was surprised to get this message, as I read that the upgrade should run smoothly.
    4. I made two tests, following this prompt. First, I answered "YES". I ended with a 24.5 GB iPhoto Library (instead of my previous 12.64 GB library). Then, while repeating steps 2&3, I answered No. I then decided to import manually my missing pictures, and ended up with a 14,4 GB (surprisingly, I got events called originals that contained same pictures than other created events). I have repeated the steps 2 to 4 from a new user account, but got the same results.
    5. None of these solutions are satisfactory as I had assigned keywords to my 5000+ photo. What is going wrong? Here is the content of my iPhoto Library (before conversion), if this is of any help:
In my iPhoto Library Oct 23, 2007:
    folder 2000 Oct 18, 2007
    folder 2004 Feb 13, 2005
    folder 2005 Jan 29, 2006
    folder 2006 Jan 7, 2007
    folder 2007 Oct 23, 2007
    AlbumData.xml Apr 17, 2005
    folder Album Nov 11, 2007
    Dir.data Apr 9, 2005
iPod Photo cache Nov 11, 2006
    iPhoto.db Apr 17, 2005
    Library.iPhoto Apr 9, 2005
    Thumb32.data Apr 9, 2005
    Thumb64.data Apr 9, 2005
    ThumbJPG Apr 9, 2005
This library is an external-drive backup copy of my HD photo library (that no longer exists).
    ==> What to do next?
    1. How to check if my keywords information is still present in my original iPhoto library? Is there any solution to get back my photo with their keywords?
    2. Manage my iPhoto library with a smaller quantity of pictures, to ease backup and conversion. I have understood that iPhoto Libray Manager is a convenient free software to merge/de-merge libraries. Is that correct?
    Thanks for your help,
    Nicolas

    NicoSou
This sounds to me like your v5 library is corrupted.
Try using the rebuild command from iPhoto Library Manager to recreate the library - it won't get everything, but should get albums and keywords. Read the iPhoto Library Manager Help for more details.
