What to exclude from TM backup?

So it looks like TM by default wants to include every volume mounted in its regular backups and I need to go in and specifically choose what NOT to back up. That's fine as I wanted to be sure it would back up my Lacie external as well as my internal HD. But it looks like by default it would back up the other 2 partitions on my TM drive. Does it make sense to backup from one partition to another essentially on the TM drive in addition to backing up my other drives or should I exclude those? One of those partitions contains my Tiger system clone, but I don't think I want a backup of a backup. Do I?

Does it make sense to backup from one partition to another essentially on the TM drive in addition to backing up my other drives or should I exclude those?
That would make little sense unless you're concerned about accidental deletion of a file/folder on those volumes. If not, then exclude those volumes.
One of those partitions contains my Tiger system clone, but I don't think I want a backup of a backup. Do I?
IMHO that would make even less sense, and it almost certainly should be excluded.
It's mostly a matter of common sense. A backup is 1) to protect against the possibility of a hard drive going bad. If the volumes in question are on the same drive as the TM backup, if the drive goes bad it's all gone, so there's little point in having TM back them up 2) to protect against accidental (or deliberate but mistaken) deletion of a file. If that's a concern, have TM back up the appropriate partitions.

  • Prevent OST file from being excluded from workstation backups

Is there a way to prevent OST files from being excluded from client/workstation backups in WS2012E?
    Thanks,
    Reg
This is especially a problem for clients that have migrated to Office 365 exchange service as they have no local backup of emails that were deleted and think synced with Office 365.
    Reginald Hook

OST files are not a local backup, they are a cache of what is in the mailbox.

  • Windows Disk-Image File:  What to Exclude from Time Machine?

I don't use Parallels very often, but when I do, the famous, predictable annoyance comes up:  The Windows disk-image file under MacOS gets tweaked, and then suddenly Time Machine has this mondo-huge 25GB file to backup.  That of course, clogs up my Time Machine backup drive.
A common solution appears to be to exclude that file from Time Machine, and then back it up by some other means.  OK, I'm cool with that, if only I knew what that file is called, and where I could find it, so that I can tell Time Machine to exclude it.
I'm guessing it's somewhere down in System or System Folder?

Ask on the Parallels forums, as its their software you have questions about

  • Can i exclude apdb files from Backblaze backup?

Beside TimeMachine i also use Backblaze as a cloud backup solution, it works perfectly so far.
I have noticed that Backblaze correctly backups all Aperture data, even small changes in the APDB Databased are recognized and Backblaze immediately backups for example the Properties.apdb file. Well, my Properties.apdb is more the 600 Mb in size and i am wondering if it would be possible to exclude it from the backup. Do You have any idea if i will be able to restore all Aperture data and the Properties.apdb will then be reconstructed automatically?
    kind regards
    Michael

I believe it is required, but as a test duplicate one of your libraries, delete the files you want to exclude from the backup and see if Aperture can recreate it.
You'll most likely have to tun a library rebuild on the library for that to work  (if it does)

  • Final Cut Pro X folders to exclude from backups?

I'm trying to get to the list of files/folders created by Final Cut to exclude from offsite backup.  Basically, anything extremely large that can be easilly re-generated.    Especially things that Final Cut should regenerate on its own if it is missing.  The reason for excluding is not space, it's the backup speed.  I'm not shipping physical disks back and forth, I'm transferring bytes over network.  I do want to backup my original files, but things that smell like Final Cut will simply regenerate if missing, I want to exclude if they are huge or temporary in nature.
    So far my list contains:
    Final Cut Events/*/Render Files
    Final Cut Events/*/Transcoded Media
    Final Cut Projects/*/Render Files
These sound like things that Final Cut might easilly regenerate from orginal media files.  Am I right or wrong?  Anything additional to add to this list?
The reason for this is that while working with Final Cut, it will generate tons of temporary files.  E.g. I have one project where only "Transcoded Media" is on the order of 200GB.  These take days to be transferred to offsite backup, and it's something that Final Cut should easilly regenerate from original media files (will it is another question).  Some of these can be deleted from disk by Final Cut itself (e.g. by selecting Delete Project/Event Render Files, and docs seem to indicate Final Cut will regenerate these if needed, unless I'm wrong here).

  • Can't copy iPhoto from my backup disk

I had to restore a lot of apps from my external backup drive yesterday. Most of them went OK, but, among others, iPhoto and iWeb wouldn't copy over to my iMac from the external drive. And, as luck would have it, I can't find my original iLife disks
Is there no way to copy these from my backup?
    Any help appreciated!

Terrence, thanks for the response. I used SuperDuper for the backup. I didn't try to restore from SD after erasing my hard drive because I'd have brought the problems over from the backup that caused me to reinstall the OS in the first place. So I dragged what I wanted from the backup over to the newly initialized and "systemized" internal hard drive.
But what I decided to do was to get iLife 09. I've been wanting to do it for a time now and this seemed like the ideal time to do it, given the problems.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

  • Crash restoring files from client backup

    Folks,
I have a Thecus W5000 running Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials. The Devices tab on the dashboard tells me that it is successfully backing up my computers, but when I fire up the Dashboard from the client PCs (I've tried both my Windows 8.1 work
horse and the Windows 7 gaming rig) and try to restore files I get a crash the moment I select a disk - I see a list of backups, choose the latest one, which presents me with icons for the C and D drives, but whichever I choose I get an immediate error (Restore
File and Folders wizard has stopped working). Each such crash generates two event log entries similar to these:

I wondered initially whether this might be permissions related, since my day-to-day user does not have admin rights, but I've tried logging on using an account that does have admin rights on the local PC (and I obviously have to give domain administrator credentials
to get the dashboard up) with the same result. The only other oddity about my setups is all that all have a G partition that is excluded from the backup, but I don't see how that could be playing into this.
    Cheers, Steve

Same issue with a Windows 7 Client.  Have server 2012r2 Essentials and was also attempting a restore files/folders from a previous backup.  Received the "Restore Files and Folders wizard has stopped working" dialog box.   Running
my Visual Studio Debugger also indicated that MountBackupWizard had failed with an exception as shown below.  Fixing this also  required removing both KB3004375 and KB3023562 from my Windows 7 workstation (not from the server) before the file restore
would work properly.  I was able to confirm that restoring these 2 updates made the problem come back again.
I don't have a support contract with Microsoft and am unwilling to pay the high individual support fee incident cost.  Can anyone else who has a support contract where this wouldn't represent an incremental cost submit an incident so that Microsoft
can get this fixed?  I suspect quite a few people that are expecting to be able to recover single files from their backups may be running or will run into this issue.  There could be significant recovery costs involved.

I was looking at the Time Machine options and it is showing my external hard drive( Seagate) as being excluded from backups. Is that correct? If not, how do I correct. thanks

Not exactly clear what you mean.. the TC will keep each Mac backup in its own sparsebundle.. it does this automagically.. The backups are not mixed.. all are kept separate.
Or is this a security question.. you don't want people looking at the contents of the backup?
You can increase the security of the TC.. but it is too late.. you should have done it when first installed. If you go to the setup you can change security (Secure Shared Disks) by selecting with Accounts.. the problem is you will lose access to all the existing backups. You really need to do a clean start.. create accounts for all the users and start again.
Also note security is not a big feature here.. anybody with physical access to the TC can press the reset for 1sec and get access. It is a home device not a business device.

    What can I do?

If you want all the songs from an artist on your phone you can to to the artist view, tap on the artist, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see a Download All button.  This works for playlists and albums too (scroll to the bottom and tap the Download All button).  I suppose if you wanted all your music on your phone you could create a smart playlist in iTunes on your computer that would contain all your music, upload it to iTunes match (Store>Update iTunes Match), and then you would get a Download All button at the bottom of this playlist on your phone to download all your songs.

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

It's says that file does not exist. How come? And why does it still show the image info.?
Where can i find those files (i have a daily backup)
The original image files are missing form your iPhoto library or iPhoto cannot find them, because the link to the originals has been broken. The image info is stored in the internal libraries, independent of the original files. That is, why you are still seeing them.
I restored the whole library from my backup.
Try restoring from an older backup, from before you first noticed the problem.
How large is the library, that you restored? Is the file size large enough to hold all your photos, or has the size been reduced?  If the library is still large, the photos may still be inside, even if iPhoto cannot find them.
It's says that file does not exist. How come?
What happened, before your iPhoto library got deleted? Which applications have you been running, or which new software have installed or upgraded?  Have you moved the library to a different disk or tried to use it from different user account or access it over the network?
