What to keep? - Dual 1.42 or Dual Sonnet 1.83 - RAM: 4x512MB or 2x1GB

Im looking for some insight - I have both the Apple Dual 1.42 and Dual Sonnet MDX 1.8Ghz Cards for my MDD. Im sure that everyone already knows the specs of these 2 cards. I Use mainly music editing and gaming softare on my machine. Im just trying to figure out what is the fastest card, and is there a solid benchmark program that can give me a definitive answer?
X-bench CPU Avg. scores are around: 77 for the 1.42 and 95 for the 1.8, but Im not sure if i trust X-bench scores, they seem inconsistent. Geekbench scores the 1.42 @ 1200+, and the 1.8 @ 1500+, So now it looks like the the Sonnet card is the fastest..... Now when I run Cinebench, the dual 1.42 always has the lowest numerical score in all tests compaired to the dual 1.8, which im guessing is the L3 in the 1.42 is doing this. What can I trust? What numbers should I be looking at? Is there another Benchmark program that is better?
Also any ideas on the impact in speed by using 4 x 512mb Ram Sticks or 2 x 1 Gb sticks (in dual channel of course)?
All thoughts welcome, thanks!

Hi-
Geekbench and Cinebench are completely trustworthy.
The reason the dual 1.42 does better in Cinebench is due to the L3 cache.
In Geekbench, it is due to the higher clock speed of the Sonnet.
Your question as to which is better is only answered with "it depends".
Benchmarks only provide a point of comparison.
Real world use determines the reality.
For gaming, graphics intensive and video applications, the dual 1.42 is the better choice.
For general computer use, without graphics intensive work, the Sonnet is probably better.
There should be no difference in 4x 512MB or 2x 1GB DIMMs.
Unlike PC's, Mac firmware controls the timing and speed of the RAM.
Unlike G5 and Mac Pro machines, matched pairs and full channels make no difference in the G4.
If there were any difference, it wouldn't be one that you would see/feel.....

  • What means ".... FROM DUAL" in SQL statements?

Occasionally I find in different SQL statement the appedix "....from dual" e.g.
    SELECT blahblah FROM DUAL;
It seems to me that this is a special built-in table.
    What does that mean exactely?
    Peter

I guess 'FROM' clause is mandatory in Oracle. Hence,
there must always be a table from which we are
selecting values. So, for selecting some arbitary
values which are not coming from any DB Table, we use
    this dummy table 'Dual'.
    Like
    select substr('sometext',5) from dual;
    select sysdate from dual ;
    etc.
Hope this clarifies. This explanation might be misleading.
The FROM clause is of cause mandatory for a SELECT statement (I think any SQL DB system, not only Oracle). So whenever you need to write a SELECT you might need a dual table.
If you are in PL/SQL you can use most functions without doing a SELECT. Like
    a:= substr('sometext',5);
myDate := sysdate; For some things we need to do a select. If we don't have a matching table, then the dual table is handy to return only one row.
    example
SELECT mySequence.nextval FROM DUAL;When we are using some tools, like SQL*Plus or T.O.A.D. our typical path to get information returned to the gui is a select. This would be a case were your examples could be used. But you could also do it like this: execute dbms_output.put_line(to_char(sysdate)); After switching the serveroutput on.

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

different between Dual hub-dual DMVPN cloud Vs Dual hub-single DMVPN cloud

Thanks Paul, I have looked over this design guide as this was the fist place i went.  however, i cannot find a configuration example for dual hub/single cloud.
i see the high level design and know you can do it.   but it doesnt show what the configuration would look like...unless i am just reading over it.

  • Dual-DMVPN Design with Dual Hubs on a single router ??

    Hi All,
In DMVPN, in Dual-DMVPN Design with Dual Hubs , can a single router perform the role of dual hubs.
The router has two different internet links. It is intended that when one link goes down, spokes shud connect to the same router onto the other active internet connection. Is this possible ?

Since no one has answered yet, I'll give you the practical answer.
You'll have issues with IPSec and static routing. "DMVPN" itself probably wouldn't have an issue, but it would depend on IPSec and routing to work.
It is easier, by far, to put in a second router. And when you factor in your time to try to make it work (and it may not work), the second router is less expensive.

  • What's keeping me from buying the W540

I have $$ to spend and no Lenovo to spend it on.
Here's what's keeping me from buying the W540:
    1) Physical buttons have been removed above the trackpad.
Many, many people complain about this in the W540 reviews:
"Touchpad: I've commented elsewhere that this is the worse I've even seen. Absolutely useless. I've disabled both the touchpad and touchstick (again, useless) and just use a mouse."
"I'd try the touchpad on the W540 for a while before you decide you can live with it, it is truly as bad as all the reviews say. I've disabled mine and use a mouse."
"...two issues with the touch-pad. The first has to do with having to clunk the whole pad as opposed to tapping on a much smaller (and quieter) button. The second has to do with the touch pad activating when you are typing."
Member "Bauden" provided an excellent rationale for why this feature change is wrong for Thinkpads:
"For a MAC, a "click-pad" may work because the ENTIRE OS is designed to be used by a single mouse button. You CANNOT force this on PC users. On PC, right-click is used frequently for many essential functions, dragging and dropping and context menus . . . . the habit of using it has been ingrained into PC users by years of Microsoft tradition and applications (NOT APPS!)."
I've used 10 Thinkpad laptops, I can't imagine being OK with that either.    Needing to use an external mouse is unacceptable.
In fact, I'd bet the extra pressure needed to "tilt" or "clunk" the entire trackpad down to do the equivalent of pressing a gentle button from before will cause a greater frequency in RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) in Thinkpad users.
I do not see a single person who feel this feature removal/change is an improvement.
Therefore, Lenovo, can you please change back?
    2) Bizzarre Resolution (2880 x 1620)
I need / want UHD. I am thrilled that you are finally selling higher quality screens on your laptops.
(Thank you Apple for putting that competitive pressure on laptop vendors.)
Lenovo, please provide the resolution on the W540 that you have provided on the new Y50. (3840x2160)
Why did you choose (2880 x 1620) resolution?
1920 x 1080 isn't an even divisor of the native dimensions at full resolution, so resolving scaling issues by going to 1920x1080 would never look exactly right.
But **please** Lenovo, keep the screen anti-glare.
If you make above changes, please keep the following features:
    1) Anti-Glare screens
    2) Trackpoint
    3)  2 physical drive capability, 1 SSD + 1 other
although it doesn't sound as easy as I'd prefer:
"Thus, no matter what anyone tells you, you CANNOT buy a W-540 and think you will easily swap a DVD drive with, say, a second hard drive. It’s minor surgery, best done with a jeweler’s screwdriver and some fine needle nose pliers.
Be sure to read the User Guide to keep from breaking the hatch cover. When I ordered mine, they shipped the Ultrabay carrier and the hard drive from the US, so they arrived early. I had to install them myself and found manipulating the tiny screws and pulling the hatch cover to be a bit scary.
……Not exactly what you would call “convenient.”

And add back in the following features:
I especially agree with these minuses in the "+/-" very detailed review by "Bauden"
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/LIVING-WITH-A-W-540/td-p/1528698/page/2
    = Missing drive indicator light
Why in the world remove that. Please add that back in.
    = Missing bluetooth indicator light
= USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 ports can be easily identified with industry standard 'Blue' for USB 3.0.
Why did you decide to not do that?
After a couple hours of reading, I'd agree with the conclusion of Bauden when s/he said:
"Overall a nice speedy machine, but that is not by Lenovo R&D.
Intel, nVidia, and m.2 SATA are all wrapped in a container that is very poor when expecting a product labelled "Workstation". This is NOT a workstation among the items mentioned above and the wrong screen aspect ratio for photography / graphic applications."

    Idea
It seems like the team who designed the Lenovo Y50 did a great job for that machine's intended purpose.
    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50-uhd/
(but is it really shipping in any quantity? Not a single user review posted to the community.)
Maybe take the team who implemented the Y50 and have them design the new Thinkpad W550.

    Update:
I'm glad those reasons above kept me from spending my own $ on this model since work ended out upgrading my old laptop.  Options were a W540 or a T440.  I had about 15 seconds to decide.  I went with the W540 tp get a larger screen.
    Thoughts after several months: T
Best thing on a day to day basis:
Overall, it's a screamer.  I can throw any workload at it and it doesn't flinch.
    ( I7, 32gb memory, drive upgraded to a 1TB Samsung EVO SSD)
Life is too short to wait on slow systems or slow hard drives.   This "best thing" overshadows everything else and makes me very happy with this system.
Worst thing on a day to day basis:
The keyboard layout. PageUp should be above PageDown.  Home should be above End.
Useless number key area. Why?  The NumLock key is right next to the Backspace key.  I'll accidentally toggle that Numlock key once a day or so when hitting backspace.  Then, the PageUp, Home, etc., keys on that keypad are useless and unpredictable.
    Mildly annoying:
    1) The mousepad, for reasons described above.  Its tolerable but not great.
    2) The new DVD button location.  I accidentally open it twice a week when picking up / putting down the W540, and I've *never* used that silly DVD player.
    3) The "B" key, the key that's directly down from the red Thinkpoint tip, isn't right.  It doesn't press down cleanly.  bbbbbbbbbbbb   It's like it gets hung up on the red nibbet.

  • What to keep in mind whilie developing under the new IOS PLA

    Hi everyone.
I found out the the new IOS PLA was introduced on June 2nd. I could not spot any noticeable differences from the previous one.
The fellow developers at my office are quite acquaint with the previous PLA, however the release announcement sort of created confusion among them. They all wonder what to keep in mind while developing and publishing the apps under the new PLA.
Your help will be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

Very simply "wired for internet" just means that you have, probably, Category 5 (CAT5) ethernet cables and jacks prewired in the home. These cables should all lead to one common location, hopefully in a patch panel or box. In order for this arrangement to be of any use you need a multi-port router and/or switch. I doubt whether the contractor provides this router/switch as part of the deal. Anyway the router/switch would connect all of these cables together as well as your internet service (DSL, Cable Modem, whatever). Plugging into any of the jacks in the home would connect you to the router/switch, which in turn would issue your device an IP address and connect you to the network. Internet access, as well as file sharing, would be controlled by the router/switch. Very basic home network and nothing complicated. Your Apple TV will work just fine with this network. You could also connect a network storage device, such as a large capacity hard drive that could be shared by all users on the network. Getting more complicated involves having a dedicated server machine running OS X Server for example.

Is dual core faster then dual processors?

Main function will be video editing on Final Cut Pro.
    I'm not sure either.
    Thanks
    A

It depends on how the application was programmed.
If the application uses a lot of shared code or shared data, the dual core platform will be faster since the cores have a common L2 cache and this will reduce the number of memory or I/O operations. Poorly written programs won't get this benefit and will run the same on both platforms.
Note also that the newest MBP's have a 1066 MHz processor frontside bus and also use 1066 MHz DDR3 SRAM, all of which will blow the socks off an ancient G5.
Of course, we're assuming that the FCP version you will be running is native to the processors, in other words, a Universal Binary.

  • Dual band vs Simultaneous dual ban

I am a little confused about dual band vs Simultaneous dual band and have been searching for hours and cannot find an answer.  I am looking to buy a new linksys wireless router with gigabit wired and 802.11n wireless.  I understand that Simultaneous dual band lets you use 802.11n in both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghx bands at the same time.  But if you have just a dual band (no Simultaneous) can you use 5Ghz 802.11n AND 801.11g?  I know 11g runs in 2.4Ghz, so I am afraid if I only get a dual band, and have pc's with 11g, i wont be able to run 5.0Ghz 802.11n since the radio is running only in 2.4Ghz.

I understand 11g can't connect at 5Ghz, it only operates at 2.4Ghz.  I guess i am having a hard time explain the question.  Lets say I get the wrt320n.  I have several g devices.  I also have several n devices.  If I configure the 320n to use 5Ghz N, will i be able to use 11g at all?  Or since it ony supports one band, will I have to use 2.4Ghz N to also use g at the same time.
    Hope that clears it up.
Agreed the 610N would be best, but trying to save a few bucks and dont need the storage link.

  • What means keep both back ups?

What means keep both ? I have bought a new TimeCapsule, I have always back up my computer to a Time Capsule T3 (still operational). When I installed the new TimeCapsule T3, the setup asked do you want to use both ( the old and the new) TimeCapsule T3. How does this work. Does it back up to the old and then to the new, does is make back ups simultaniasly? Who knows how to deal with this? Please let me know.

Time Machine will create a new backup on your new TC, and it will if you choose both, keep both backups updated sequentially.. as long as both are online.. in other words.. first incremental backup after you create the new backup will be the old TC.. next one to the new TC and so forth.

so i replaced the motherboard on my dual 867MHz G4.
the computer turns on now, and i did a fresh 10.4.11 install...but i noticed that it says "Dual 800" instead of "Dual 867" in my "About This Mac" now. i typed "sysctl hw.cpufrequency" in the terminal and discovered that it is actually running at 800MHz, and not 867MHz.
so why did i lose 67MHz with a new motherboard? it was the correct motherboard...any ideas?

G4 MDD Processor and bus speeds
There are two classes of Processors for the Mirrored Drive Doors G4 Macs, and they do not follow the main distinction between the products -- Firewire 400 Vs. Firewire 800.
In the Mirrored Drive Doors models, processor speed is determined by a combination of the jumpers on the processor modules and the Bus Speed of the system into which the processor is installed.
    • Install a processor intended for a faster Bus speed into a system with a slower Bus speed, and it will be clocked slower and run slower than expected. 133/167 slower.
    • Install a processor intended for a slower bus speed into a system with a faster Bus speed, and it will be clocked faster -- in most cases so fast that it will immediately crash.
    133 MHz Bus speed:
867 MHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.0 GHz single w 1 MB cache from Fw 800 model
    167 MHz Bus speed:

  • Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver: Near Perfect Installation

I installed the family pack on both my desktop G4 towers (Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver) and had almost ZERO problems.
I opted to upgrade my OS X 10.4.10 systems.
Both installations (upgrades) were without a problem, except for one minor keychain glitch:
MDD Dual 867mhz G4: After installation and restart, the keychain seemed to have forgotten my passwords for my POP email and my iChat (AIM) accounts. I simply cleared the keychain (as prompted) and re-entered the passwords (opted to save them) and all is well.
Quicksilver Dual 1ghz G4: No keychain issue. Passwords were retained just fine.
Every piece of email, settings, music, files, folders, apps, etc were all retained just fine on both computers.
All my Adobe CS2 suite apps, MS Apps are just fine.....as does my Final Cut Pro software.
The only software that "broke" was GOOGLE EARTH. I simply just downloaded the latest version and all is well again.
    Approx. Install time: 1hr.
Note: If your computer stalls on a blue screen (my computers did this on TIGER install), let them go. More than likely it's "finishing" the installation and probably cataloging the hard drive for Spotlight.
This Leopard OS Rocks! I can't wait til they fine tune it with a 10.5.1 update release

    I put Leopard on a Dual 800 and a Dual 400.
Leopard pushes the limits of the 400. The 800 runs pretty well.
I mean it is slower in some places, but I assume that will be fixed in updates.
(for instance... my cursor is sticking to links in firefox and it kills my CPU usage)
    Everything else works great.
