What to Study to become an Designer / Architect

Hi,
This post may have nothing to do with code, but I still wanted to ask you people because I know all of you have different experiences. I have finished my studies from a polytechnic college. Found a job and worked in the UK for some time. Now I came back to my home country, and realized that no one takes the course I have seriously in my country. Therefore I decided to continue study.
I am most interested to remain in the Java world, however even personally I like to see what other technologies have to offer. However although I spend most of my time coding (even partially as a hobby) I feel I do not want to work as a programmer. The fact is I do not like the idea of someone telling me what to code.
I feel more comfortable in the design world, and suggesting design solutions on how to implement a certain solution for a particular problem domain. As I said I am not going to find a job in this area unless I have proper qualifications to back me up. So my question is what university course would you people take?
I thought of BSC IT. Since there is some business involved with it, and not just coding. Everyone is telling me to do that, however I do not know how much business has to do with designing.
I also understand that it will involve me a lot of hard work to arrive there and a simple course will not turn me to a designer, but I was just wondering n what kind of qualification you people think I need to get.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First of all thanks for your post :)
That seems to suggest that you don't like being a
lackey but not so much that you don't like
programming. On a perhaps related note I would say
that one cannot aspire to be even a competent
designer unless one is prepared to spend a goodly
amount of time with ones' hand in code. How else will
you be able to learn about new technologies and the
implementation of design methodologies? I don't
believe that is possible. You are completely right, I am not imagining myself in a situation where I do not touch any code. However I would like that my employer considers for a moment my ideas on how a solution should be implemented. At the moment I am giving ideas, and they always refuse them, go to someone more qualified then me, tell them the exact same thing, and then everything is ok. That is why I am searching for more qualifications
At any rate whatever path you take a BSC is always
good. Much, much, much more valuable than a BA or
certification or other thingies. A BSC says to
potential employers that you have the capability to
think and plan logically and in a scientific process.
And people may have different opinions but legally a
BSC is more valuable and that is a fact. For example
if I wanted to work in the U.S. (which I don't
particularly but just as an example) with a BSC I
have a chance. With a BA or something else... almost
no chance. And with a BSC IT and programming experience can I aim to become a designer? or there are some levels of other jobs I need to do?
Please do not get me wrong, I am ready to work hard for this, however I want to arrive in that position as soon as possible.
And while you may not want to move again I think a
BSC just opens more doors and opportunities for you
no matter what path you take so in my mind if you are
considering it I would encourage you to follow
through.In my country they mostly work by seniority (according to age you get a promotion). I being still very young do not like that much, and would like to advance in my career as fast as I can. I do not know why I am like that .. always in a hurry.
I also thought about the qualifications offered by Sun. Do you think they would be valued?

  • New laptop - studying as multi-media designer

    Hi all
    I'm currently studying as multi-media designer and my 32 bit version of windows 7 computer with duel core and 4 GB ram is somewhat lacking the power, especially now when we're getting introduced to premiere pro which my own computer can't even install!
    Portability is also an issue here, since I'm not very strong and it takes my at least 1 hour on train and bus each way to go to school.
    I'm looking at these 2 laptops - a 15.6" and a 17.3" from a danish site that's known (locally anyway) for building good stuff for affordable prices.
    Anyway, please give me some feedback on these two and the configurations I should choose.
    15.6"

    17.3"
    http://www.mm-vision.dk/produkter/vispcsystem.asp?action=vis&type=notevision&menu=notebook &varenr=705500020&gruppe=visionnotebook
    My boyfriend did some research on specs and from what he could read in here, he recommened the 15.6" with following setup:

    But what about the default graphics card in the 17.3"??
    "Nvidia GeForce GTX660m 2GB GDDR5 dedikeret RAM (DirectX 11)"
    There's no option for upgrading that... well, we can try to give them a call and hear if the 675 from the 15.6" works in the 17.3"!?

  • What are the best practice to design Dashboard?

    Hi Friends,
    What are the best practice to design Dashboard?
    Thanks

    1) Use section name instead of Title View to name your report. This way sections can be collapsed and user can still see report name.
    2) Enable alternate coloring in tables and pivots for easy readablity and set table and pivot widths to 100% (for reports in dashboards) to reduce white space and achieve a more "professional look."
    3) Use column selectors and view selectors to reduce the width of reports and reduce the amount of columns user sees to a "practical minimum."

    Poor old Photoshop® is forever being put down when it comes to layout work, but it is perfectly capable, and can output a high quality print PDF the printer will be perfectly happy with.  OK you don't have the text flow between columns bells and whistles of InDesign and [spit] Publisher, but if you have a $10/month Photoshop/Lightroom subscription, instead of the $50/month full subscription, don't think you can't do a perfectly good flyer or poster.

    There is NO way to get the Unix (=Solaris) version of FM 8 to run

  • What to study for the Microsoft 70-680 to help me get Microsoft Certified

    Dear Microsoft Tech Forum,
    I have taken the Microsoft Certification Exam 70-680, Configuring Windows 7, and failed the first time around earlier this month. The reason for this is very simple. I have been studying out of date material. You see, the book that Microsoft Press issued
    for the Microsoft 70-680 which I have in my possession was published 5 years ago. I never found out until it was too late that the exam underwent a change in March of 2014. Now I need updated material to help me study for the exam. May you please suggest to
    me some new materials I'll need to study for the Microsoft 70-680 and where I can get notifications that they changed the exam and what to study? I have the ability to do this again.
    Regards,

    If you're doing self-study via book, then check Amazon to see what books they have and what the user review/ratings are.  That should provide you with information as to which book may be a better choice.

  • What do you think about our design

    Dear sir, madame,
    What do you think about our design:
    Mini Paarden shop
    Looking forward hearing your opinion.
    Kind regards,
    Mariska

    Hello Mariska,
    Browsing on an iPad, the search bar + cart Infos are hidden on the right hand side of the page (I need to scroll to see it). Depending on your target audience and the devices they uses, it might be an issue if they can't complete the order process because they don't see where the cart is...
    Apart from that, the design overall strikes me as clear enough to be browsable, IMO it does the job!

  • What do you think of this Design for Multiple Threads

    Hi Java Experts ;
    I'm curious to know what you think about this design for a multhreaded app i'm working on.
    I have a controller thread that (a.) creates threads and (b.) keeps a reference to threads that it creates (by sticking them in a hashtable along with the generated Id for that thread).
    When a created thread completes its job, it decrements the thread counter and removes its reference from the hashtable before it finishes its run method.
    Now here's the interesting part in my controller thread i'm creating new threads on the fly with this infinite loop
         public void run(){
              while(true){
                   try{
                        Thread.sleep(500);
                   }catch(InterruptedException e){
                   if(threadCounter<maxThreadCount && moreJobsToDo.size()>0){
                        createDomainThread();
              }//end while
    what do you think about this pattern ? My goal is to maintain about 200+ created threads running at all times with this pattern.

    jeff kesslerman's book says about threads
    "5.2.3 Threads
    The impact that threads have on RAM footprint isn't a problem for most programs, but running threads do need space to store their stack state, and the system- specific data structures do consume memory.
    Because runtime implementations vary widely in how threads are handled, you might encounter situations where the impact threads have on footprint is significant. For example, some ports of the JRE create a heavyweight OS process for each running thread. In an application that uses many threads, this means that thread costs, rather than class or object costs, can become the dominant factor in the program's memory consumption.
    You shouldn't avoid using threads-they're necessary in many cases, and generally don't have a large impact on footprint. However, you should be aware that the impact can be very different across runtimes. This is one of the reasons it's a good idea to measure performance characteristics under your program's different target environments. "
    Question #1: how does garbage collection go about clearing the stack state, and the system- specific data structures that consume memory.
    Question #2: in my situation, each worker thread's activity is not as brief as a simple server request. Each thread does a lot work and does a lot of network connections. on average I would say 100 http request - each of which can be easily blocked or delayed significantly. Therefore each worker thread may operate for between 2 - 10 minutes.
    Do you think thread pooling is useful in this situation ?

  • Why would anyone want to become a software architect?

    A recent OTN Architect Community column in Oracle Magazine asks that question (read it here). In that article working architects, including Oracle ACE Directors Lucas Jellema and Ronald van Luttikhuisen, Oracle ACE Luis Weir, and Oracle architect Randy Stafford explain what they find interesting and rewarding about the. But now it's your turn. If you're working as a software architect -- or if you have your career sights set on that role, what makes that role important to you?

    Architect ... I see him it differently, and I will tell how much differently .. I purchased a apartment/home and living there, decorating it with paintings , murals , mosaic and many other good things, I am now simply living in a house and following its geometry as it is set for my house , this is the limitation of my house , this is something I am bound to follow or I will hurt myself or I will crash ,  So the feeling that something designed by some is governing my movement is both a matter of contention and admiration.
    This is architect, he/she defines the rule of the game and in fact start the game also. This is a analogy I have drawn.
    Also if someone has seen the move Matrix  from  The Wachowski Brothers , you will find one very interesting thing , all are playing the game which the architect has build.
    I personally have a high regards for them, I think it takes a great amount experience and hard work to reach a point where you can design .
    Personally I am not sure what all skills are needed to be a Software architect .
    I would love to get guidance from them.
    Regards
