What to upgrade to from OS X 10.5.8 on macbook?

Hello,
I am currently running OS X 10.5.8 on my macbook, and need to upgrade the software to run the new version of itunes (and a graphics tablet which I have just bought which doesn't work on anything below 10.6 :/) Which version is the next one up for me to upgrade to and where would I get it from, I live in the U.K? Also, would I need to back up any of files? This would be the first time I've done anything like this and I'm not really a technically minded person! =)
Many Thanks,

Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
     OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
             Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Before upgrading you should do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Make a backup of the computer by cloning it:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means an external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Sorry, but that's not how it works. Photoshop Elements is Adobe's consumer-grade version of Photoshop, its big photo editing program. Premiere Elements is not an upgraded version of PSE. It's the consumer-grade version of Premiere, Adobe's video-editing program. Sometimes the two programs (PSE and PRE) are sold together as a bundle.

I disagree - I have a Q6600 and the GTX460 provided a significant improvement in visual quality (the ability to crank texture resolution and FSAA up in WoW) on a Q6600.
However only low-end GTX460s fall within the OP's price range.  However, there are a number of cards that fall between the 8600 and the GTX460 in performance that would work for the OP.)
I'm not sure what the current "$100 workhorse" video card is these days.  First it was the 8800GT, then it was the GT240, dunno what now.
The GTS450 seems to be in a fairly good price/performance sweet spot that should perform significantly better than the 8600GT.

Hi, I need to get advise on what to upgrade to from 10.5.8.? Is it Snow Leopard ?
    Thanks !

G5 and G4 processors are at the end of the line if they are at 10.5.8.
If you have an Intel processor, 10.6.8 is possible if you follow these tips:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If you have a newer Intel processor, read this about updating to 10.7 or later:

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

Then your basic issues are: too little RAM, incompatible software, dysfunctional installation.
Add more RAM or kill as many programs that you use until the computer is running normally.
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. Upgrade any old software.

  • HT4009 What about upgrading? I can't do that from where I live w/o connecting to my hd. Now with the new changes to ITunes, I don't see how I can upgrade thru the traditional route I took b4. Now what do I do?

What about upgrading apps on your IPhone? I can't do that from where I live w/o connecting directly to my laptop. With Apple's new Itunes page, I don't see how I can navigate successfully now to acheive the same result as before. Hmmm. I would appreciate some quick guidance. Thanks.

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar that used to show on previous versions of iTunes via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC. You can then select the Apps part of your iTunes library on that sidebar and on the right-hand side of iTunes click the Check For Updates button at the bottom to see if any of your apps have updates available. Then connect your phone and select it on the sidebar, and on the Apps tab on the right-hand side click the Sync button at the bottom of it to copy the updates over

Acrobat is a program used by a wide variety of users for a even wider number of purposes. So if we simply gave you a feature list, that wouldn't be very helpful.
Tell us how you use Acrobat, and what you do with it, and we can suggest improvements that were made in Acrobat X and XI Pro.

    Hello hsielglad,
Thank you for your question. iTunes 11.1 is required to update to and sync with iOS 7.  If you are still running iTunes 10.6.3, I recommend trying to obtain the update by going to the iTunes menu and selecting Check for Updates.

I just upgraded OS from 10.4.1 to Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Now when I tried to open Reason 4 it asks for me to insert a disc and prompts me to enter my ID for permission. What can I do?

First off, you can't have upgraded from 10.4.1, as that won't run on a MacBook. 10.4.4 is minimum.  10.4.10, and 10.4.11 are different from 10.4.1.
Secondly, it appears Reason 4.0.1 is needed for 10.6:

There may be other upgrades on:

Check with the developers in question if they are aware of any bugs in the upgrade process.

I have a Power PC dual 2 gig G5 running OS X 10.4.10. I know at some point that Leopard will not support the power PC platform, but I also know I probably will have one more upgrade path before my computer is no longer supported. I have not upgraded because My machine runs perfect. But I also know that a lot of my software will not run when I upgrade. Pro Tools, Maya,Mocha, various plug ins for Pro Tools. What path should I take to my final upgrade to the latest OS?
    Thanks in advance
