What to use for backups? Should I clone the drive?

I have a 100Gb hard drive and would like to know what software i should use to backup/clone. I'm still relatively new to Macs and the idea of a cloned drive isn't as feasible in the PC world. I ordered an external drive (250Gb) and will use part of it for my Mac (Can I use half for my Powerbook and half for my PC laptop?). The external drive will have firewire.
My main concern is backups with the ability to boot as an added feature. What plan should I use? I have no problem cloning the whole drive once or twice a month. Should I buy Carbon Copy, Super Duper or Deja vu? Is there something better out there? HELP!

The main fear I was referring to about the drive partitioning was the possibility of drive failure, which might lose data on both partitions. Whilst loss is a relatively unlikely event, the whole idea of backing up is to give you the re-assurance that your data is safe when that 'unlikely' event happens (which it probably will when you least expect or want it to). Over the years I have learned the hard way that backups should be treated in the most safest and most conservative manner - no shortcuts. That said, the event you described is very unlikely.
You can erase and partition the drive whilst booted into OS X normally, using Disk Utility. Obviously the PC partition needs to be formatted for MS-DOS. Once erased and properly partitioned, the drive will be ready for cloning. There's no need to repeat the erase/partitioning process in the future - unless there's a problem. These tasks do not need to be performed in safe mode.

Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast

Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Can a time capsule be used for backup and as a remote drive?

I want to know if I am able to use the Time Capsule as both a backup, and as a remote Hard Drive at the same time? My Macbook Pro's hard drive is full from movies I have downloaded on itunes, so I need to store them somewhere else, ie not on my macbooks hard drive. At the same time I want to backup everything on the macbook. Is this possible?

You can, but the Time Capsule was really designed for Time Machine backups and there will be fight for space at some point in the future if you store a signficant amount of data on the Time Capsule drive.
You probably have not thought about this, but if your "original" copies of your movies, audio files, etc are on the MacBook now and you move them to the Time Capsule drive....your "originals" will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you have no backups since your "originals" are on the drive that failed, and you lose everything.
A much safer strategy would be to add an external USB or Firewire drive to your MacBook and store all of your media files there. Then, Time Machine will backup both your MacBook and the external drive.
So, you have "originals" in one location and backups in another location. That's what a backup strategy is all about. In the event that one drive fails...and it will....you still have another copy on another drive.

What thrid party tools are you using for backup compression?

I have a few SQL Server 2008 standard edition instances and I'm curious to what third party tools people are using for backup compression. I know upgrading to enterprise edition or SQL Server 2008R2 or above will give me that compression but I do not
have that option right now. I'm familiar with Idera, Red gate and Litespeed and I just want to know what else is out there.

I also tried "reloading" software from the Western Digital site, but after following all the instructions, it looks like my iMac doesn't support this software (I can't even locate it after I follow all the instructions.

First of all, you do not really want to use their software; if you want a bootable clone, use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you simply want to drag and drop some files, you don't need software to do that. The important thing on any external drive is that you format/partition it correctly (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and using GUID partition scheme).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about WD drives or their software, so I don't have any idea what kind of backup you did. Having said that, it should still recognize the external even if it's outdated. Have you tried mounting it manually in Disk Utility? If you can get it to mount, you could (worst case scenario) just drag your stuff off onto your internal and then reformat the external.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.

Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?

'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.

Im am new to motion 5, and im trying to work out how it fits in with what im wanting to do.
Basically im wanting to create a 3-4 minute product video/demo like this: http://www.riba-insight.com/buildpresence
I want all the fancy typography and cool effects you can do in motion. But im not sure how motion fits in with creating a sequence over 3-4 minutes?
Should I be splitting every little scene up and then moving them into final cut? How should i get them into final cut? Export as movies? Save as generators? Should I be using something completely different like Flash CS6? I dont want to jump too far in if I have the general idea wrong about what motion can/should be used for.

In Preferences > Appearance towards the bottom you'll see Status Bar. Make sure "Frame Rate (only during playback)" is selected. It will appear at the top of the canvas in the same bar as the Render and View menus (but over towards the left side) when the project is playing. It will give you a good idea if the project is playing slowly (less than the frame rate of the project) or up to speed.
Motion frequently plays slower than the chosen frame rate of the project. This variance in playback can easily and certainly throw off your judgment. If this is happening and you need to verify the speed of an animation, Export (share) and play it in Quicktime Player. As you work the project, you can always keep saving over the same temporary video file and simply throw it away when you're done with it. Also, changing the export render settings to ProRes proxy, you will create a much smaller file (don't bother with H.264, it takes much longer to render than ProRes and interfere with "workflow".)

Everywhere I search on Apple's Support site says to sign in to iCloud using your "Apple ID," which I did. I've had my iTunes account for years (even migrated from the old AOL account system). It's the standard email+password that everyone is supposed to use.
My main question is how can I have a valid Apple ID and not an iCloud account--if the two are supposed to be linked?

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I checked, and at least one other user is having the same issue. I'll attempt to copy/paste the Support request url: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4430653?tstart=0
