What tools do you really use to manage network settings?

I have been having all sorts of frustrations setting up DNS, and in the end I found that many of the problems were due to bugs or flakiness in the Server Admin tools.
Throughout the course of reading these discussions, I eventually found the solution to my problems in a post by someone named after King Arthur's castle.
This person went on to say "...but I quickly outgrew Server Admin anyway, ".
So my question is, how do people actually configure things?
Do people use a command line version of the gui tools, or is actually hand editing files like /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple the preferred method.

Fortunately this was the last issue I had and once I had fixed it things started working. However there had been quite a few issues before that one (10.0.0.1 that wouldn't go away, NAT refusing to start), and googling for answers had yielded quite a few mentions of bugs and flakiness in Server Admin, even to the point of people advising 'if you don't get DNS working first time, your best to reinstall SL from scratch.'
All I really wanted to get going was simple NAT. It's not 'serving' anything except shared access to the internet for an iMac and an iPad. After 2 days of trial and error and googling for advice on problems that in some cases were issues with Server Admin I was quite frustrated and ready to give up, and I wondered if there was an easier (or at least less opaque) way of doing things.
Anyway, as I mentioned everything seems to be working{**} now so I'm happy for the time being.

{**}Mostly working. I am still getting lots of errors about Jabber 'not available until network configuration completed' and some GUID not found when 'retrieving Global Shared Address Book info. I'd happily just do without these. I did turn off Address Book in Server Preferences but that make no difference, I'm still getting the error. I tried turning off iChat (which I think is what uses Jabber) but it just won't turn off. There is no 'off' button for iChat in Server Admin, and when I slide the switch to 'off' in Server Preferences, it just slides straight back to 'on' again. Maybe one day I'll try and figure out what the problem is, but I've had enough of battling against OS X for the time being.

I use Forte from Sun at work, it is a Free large IDE and also makes your executable Jars for you too.
I use NetBeans at home, it has about the same features, but is open source and what Forte is based upon.

This is a Brand new Server 2012 that is running our CRM product and it is trying to connect to a Server 2008 R2 server with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 instance (10.50.4000)
I have seen this in the past where it needed the 2005 backwards compatibility components installed but those are not supported on 2012 server and this is not a 2005 SQL instance.
I am trying to install the Shared Management Objects for SQL Server 2008 but it tells me I need to install the CLR types, which I did install. But it continues to tell me to install the CLR types.
Has anyone ran into any issues like this? (this happens trying to connect to multiple SQL Servers from this new 2012 Server)

Which version and edition of the SQL Server instance did you installed on the new server machine? If you install SQL Server 2012 Express edition, you can try to install SQL Server Management Studio 2012 from
this link.
You can connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 or earily verions with SSMS 2012.

Thanks for the reply. The project I am working on is a test project for a customer. They could potentially want a number of their educational subjects presented as an interactive text book. The intent of this first project with them is to establish a logical workflow that will allow us to efficiently estimate costs and allow for review throughout the design process. Having worked with customers on creative projects in the past I can anticipate that they will want a number of changes made once they see a working version of the interactive text book.
It is a grim reality that no project can be fully edited and planned prior to working on it and I know revisions and changes are always made once the customer can see their product. It is ok with me if there is no easy way to pass the text back and forth from the customer and me without having to reformat everything but I just want to know that is the way it works in order to provide a realistic time estimate for the project.
My hope was I would be able to export the formatted text, allow them to make edits and then reimport that formatted text. The style sheets I am using are from one of the iBooks Author templates.
Do you know if there is a way to use (or export ) this style sheet so it can be used in a Pages Document?
Or, would the best option be to have the customer install iBooks Author? This would require the customer to have a mac and the software so it doesn't work for all cases.
Another idea I was considering would be to export the book as a PDF and have the customer add markup and notes to the PDF.
All of these options do not seem too great to me.
I am open to any ideas.

Size is in > 1 - 6 TB. ( 9R2 and 10gR2 on AIX)
Using GControl only.
I'm wondering what could be the way to create subsets of the production database, for test purposes?
Are there any effective 3-rd party tools/suites or native Oracle functionality?

The idea of using a different schema is just so that you can keep the same table_names and schema in the target database for the selected data. You would be able to use a full export and import of the special schema that holds all of the data of interest.
Instead of CTAS you can use CREATE DDL followed by INSERT SELECT statements for your partitioned tables.
There is not built-in feature to quickly do what you want without serious study to understand the data relationships and target the data in question. The query= on an export might be useful but extracting the data into holding tables is probably the better route where the number of objects is not one or two and the relationships vary especially if some of the relationships are not defined to the database.

Tinderbox is another build monitoring tool. It does not show detailed steps of a build cycle. It only shows the final result : success or failed. But it can display build output for multiple platforms on the same page.

I used to use IETester for testing in this browser. What tool is recommended now?

Personally i just run everything in in VMWare from XP-windows8 /android/mac so I can see how each browser handles sites.
I found that F12 tools isn't as acurate as just loading them into the browser, it seems to be far more forgiving than it should be.

We are very new to JHeadstart/JDeveloper and have just established the method we are going to use at the Entity Level to convert input to Uppercase by putting the following code into a superclass and extending the .xml files of the entities from EntityImpl to this superclass which we called UWEntityImpl.
What I am wondering is what other ways is this functionality being used by you more experienced JHeadstart Developers? I am trying not to re-invent the wheel and utilize methods that have worked well for you.
Of course I can think of toLowerCase, what else are you using?

Hi Eric,
I'm not a pro, but I wanted to clear up one of your issues. Aperture does not store or convert your files in a proprietary format. The image files that you store in the library will remain in their original format and untouched. The "Library" is a Mac OS X entity called a package. A package appears as a single file, but it's an illusion. If you ever needed to extract your image files, you can do so in the Finder (without Aperture) by option-clicking on the "Library" and selecting "Show Package Contents". Now you can navigate the file and folder structure to get at your originals. Of course, a much faster and easier way is to have Aperture export the originals. However, my point was to clear up the "proprietary" structure misunderstanding.
Also--as was mentioned--each adjustment doesn't create a new image file. Every new version of your original is merely a list of instructions or "recipe" used to apply adjustments to the original to recreate the version for screen and print. This is done dynamically, on the fly. A finished version of the original is never created and saved to a file until you tell it to export a version. Thus, every version is a very small addition to the database. This is very unlike iPhoto, where every new version of a file creates a new image to store...all the more reason to move to Aperture.

What language do you enjoy using?

Since we have one thread asking what languages you have used. I thought I would ask what one have people enjoyed using the most.
I know that any programming language has its' limitations and is not suitable for every situation, that aside I was wondering what language people have prefered coding in purely from an enjoyment stand point and an easy of use.
Personally I would have to say Java, but I have also liked Pascal. Never was to keen on C/C++ and dread RPG and COBOL.
I work mostly with DIBOL, something like COBOL but not nearly as bad.

Where are you from ?I'm from the USA. English is my native language, but I have a keen understanding of grammar and use it to study other languages. I learned a lot of Spanish on my own through a dictionary and by observing people as they speak. I then took a year of Elementary Spanish last year, but it wasn't challenging enough. I learned Portuguese pronunciation through a friend from Brazil, and learned some vocabulary through a dictionary and similarities to Spanish. I can often guess at what a Portuguese word is knowing its Spanish counterpart.

BEx reporting, process chains and web reporting are all made up for KPI reporting only.
Lets take an example of some KPI Sales / Employee.
BEx Reporting - you need to make a report to show this either you can do the calculation Sales / Employee or you can go in BEx reporting for the same. Business Explorer (BEx) is to make the reports.
Process Chains - These are scheduled steps which helps us to load the data in the targets on the defined frequency. You can relate your KPI with this also, at what frequency your KPI's would be updated. Twice in a day, you get your updated KPI figures or daily or weekly depending on your process chain. Process chains are just to load your data only.
Web Reporting - This is main part for KPI's because through Web reporting only larger audience / users would be getting the values for KPIs. Everybody wont be having access to Cubes or BEx, they get the reports through web reporting only.

Vector-based paths 100% all the way. Raster-based art often stinks for things like logos and symbols.
Photoshop is very good in some respects at creating vector art. I really LOVE the keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop for the vector-based Pen tool. Using Shift, Ctrl, Alt and Spacebar on Windows or Command, Option, Shift and Spacebar on Mac you can manually digitize vector paths over scanned art, make adjustments to those paths and zoom in/out and hand pan the view. I really wish Illustrator (and CorelDRAW) used the same keyboard short cuts. They really speed up the process of manually drawing clean paths over hand-drawn or scanned artwork.
Illustrator is a great tool for this purpose for all the extra vector-based tools it has that Photoshop does not. CorelDRAW is also very good. However, they're best at techie looking things while Photoshop's pen tool strenghs lend themselves to accurately digitzing more "organic" looking shapes.
