What transfer speed can I expect via wired ethernet?

3 iMac's wired to an AirPort Extreme....what transfer speeds should I expect?  I'm only getting 40-60MBps  IMac to IMac via Ethernet provides up to 70MBps. I am wanting to get a Thunderbolt Drive but worry that while the iMac that the Thunderbolt HD is plugged into will get much faster transfer rates, when access the Thunderbolt HD from another iMac on the network I will still be stuck with the 40-60MBps rate.  Surely there is a way to get faster network speeds than 40-60MBps?

Tesserax,   You are are correct, I was just hoping that there was some way to get better performance out of my network speed so that the $1500 Thunderbolt purchase was worth it.  What I now plan to do is get the $999 model R4 4-1TB just so I can have one since the iMac that the Thunderbolt HD will be plugged in to will be doing the most editing so in some ways it does help me....just not as much as I was hoping it would.  I can at least take my old FireWire HD and plug it into my iMac and use that for FCPX projects that are for more personal than business use.
Having only 1 HD that 3 iMac's can use to edit images from has really helped me out with keeping everything in order.
If you can daisy chain the Thunderbolt Drives I have to wonder why they didn't have it so 2 iMac's couldn't connect to 1 HD.  With 2 Thunderbolt ports on the iMac you would think you could connect iMacs together using 1 port on each then have the other port for like HD's, extra screens, etc You know what I mean?  If you are going to make this super fast port/cable you might as well make it to connect iMacs as well.

  • Can't Connect Via Wired Ethernet Broadband Connection

Replaced a Westell 7500 with a DSL-N10 because of constant disconnects. The Westell had no problem connecting via the wired ethernet broadband connection which I switch to when I need to improve buffering for videos. The DSL-N10 won't connect and reports "Error 651 Modem reported a problem". I reconnected the Westell to determine if there was a problem but it connected to the wired connection immediately. Question is do I need to change or add a setting in the DSL-N10 to get a wired connection or is this something I need to conract Verizon support about?

  • Can iPhone have a wired ethernet connection?

There are places where there is a wired ethernet connection available but no wireless available.
Is there a way to connect an iPhone to a wired ethernet network?
    Thank you.

    Thank everyone for their help.
As I mentioned before, sometimes clarity is missing.
I realize that there are no "Apple Networks". What I should have asked was "Will an Airport Extreme when connected to a non-Apple modem/router provide a wireless signal that can be used by my iPhone" - and my MacBook Pro, and my ...
There are literally hundreds of posts both here and on other Apple Discussion boards that warn/advise against using a Cisco/Linksys/Belkin/Buffalo/whatever product in the network chain (wired or wireless) with Apple products.
I am not attempting to say whether these concerns/difficulties are valid or due to a lack of experience. I am just asking, and appreciative of the response that "YES" an Airport Extreme connected via a CAT 5 cable to an old Linksys switch will work.
As someone who has suffered/struggled for years with network problems I understand the pain.
And for those of you old enough to remember --
Thankfully I did not ask "Can I connect my Iphone to the Orange Micro SCSI card on my Motorola Starmax 5000"
Thanks again to all who helped.
I've ordered an Apple Extreme and will have it surgically implanted in my excessive adipose tissue with a tattoo reminding everyone that before I have an MRI, and take off my watch and my wedding ring, that maybe someone on the medical staff should take a look at their WiFi reception.

  • New Build FTTP - What speeds can I expect?

Moving into a new build towards the end of the year. The spec sheet of the house is detailed as having: "Broadband via Fibre to the Premises FTTP via BT Openreach"
Just trying to gauge what kind of speeds I'd be expecting to get... Based on the postcode it looks like we'd be in between the Armadale and Bathgate exchanges with Armadale having FTTP enabled and Bathgate having FTTC enabled, although I'd suspect we're probably closer to the Bathgate exchange.
Obviously no information about what cabinets we'd likely be connected to as of yet.

If your new property is being installed with FTTP then the speeds with FTTP isn't effected by distance from the exchange like ADSL broadband and nor is it effect by distance from the cabinet like FTTC broadband.
The speeds you can get with FTTP depends on what service level you get. The current highest sercice level with FTTP is up to 330mbps downstream and up to 30mbps upstream

  • What speed can I expect?

    Hello there,
I recently brought the Infinity 2 package, which is due to be active on the 24th.
The speed is advertised upto 75mb.
What speed would I be looking at getting? I only manage 4mb with Sky and am someway from the exchange.
My friend gets 50mb and lives about a mile up the road, would I be getting there or there abouts?
I'd be delighted at anything over 20mb to be honest, but 50mb would be awesome.
The exchange i'm on is Langley Mill and I live in Heanor.
    Thanks.

  • Airport Extreme file transfer speed slower than expected.

I have an Airport Extreme with a 1 TB drive attached.
I'm trying to copy a bunch of files to it with a Windows Vista computer with a D-Link wireless N dual-band adapter (connected to the 5GHZ channel, which I configured to act solely as wireless N 5 GHZ), but the transfer is only taking place at 1.3 MB/sec.
I'd expect more in the 8-9 MB/sec range for my new router given other benchmarks I've seen. What could be going on?

  • What IO throughput can I expect from the A7 Datawarehouse VM

I have created an A7 DWH VM from the Azure gallery. Since this VM is based on the FastTrack DWH architecture I expect to see several gigabits per second throughput from the 15 SSD's. When I ran SQLIO on the VM I received around 30MB/s for sequential read

    Hi,
Have you find any application/process is using hign cpu/memory usage in task manager?

  • Trouble Connecting Via Wired Ethernet

Just bought Airport Extreme and I've successfully connected to the internet wirelessly from my G4 Powerbook (solid green light, etc.).
Great, but when I plug my G4 Tower (no card) into the AE base station Ethernet jack, I cannot connect to the internet. However, when I bypass the AE, and plug modem directly into G4 Tower computer, it connects fine.
    Powerbook connects wirelessly fine.
Tower connects wired (direct) fine, but cannot connect through AE Ethernet jack.
What is the one little detail I am missing?
    Thanks for any help.
    G4 Dual 1.4 Tower   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When you say connecting your G4 through "an ethernet
jack", I assume you mean one of the LAN ports not the
WAN port which is where your internet input should be
    connected.
Yes, that's correct. And the wireless is working perfectly.
Also if you go to Preferences, Network, it should
show your internal ethernet active when you attach
    the G4 PPC.
When I try to connect, I get a pop-up: "Could not find a PPPoE server"
In System Prefs > Network > Network Status, the dot next to "Built-in Ethernet" goes green and text reads: "Built-in Ethernet is set-up to use PPPoE. Built-in Ethernet is plugged in but is not connected. 'Connect Automatically' is selected."
So I guess the answer is yes. The light next to "Built-in Ethernet" in Network is green, but it can't make a connection.
But when I bypass the AE and plug the modem straight into my Ethernet jack, it connects just fine.
So when my G4 Tower is plugged into the AE Ethernet LAN port, for some reason it can't seem to connect.
    Any ideas?

  • Can you use a wired ethernet to internet AND wireless to apple tv

since getting the appletv, i had connected it wirelessly through the apple extreme (n) base station and kept my internet setup with gigaport #1 with no problem. since the latest updates, apple tv is very sensitive....does not work if the wired ports are used and will not even show up in iTunes.....anyone having similar problems? anyone able to fix this? thanks

    thanks WC.
i saw this post and went to my account, changed it from m/c to none and saw my total update (I had recently rented 2 HD movies so my account decreased accordingly)
BUT, before I left the pay't information screen, I chose cancel instead of done. I wanted to leave my CC there for iphone purchases (and b/c we can't use GCs yet).
Anyhoo, it still worked - and I'm glad it did b/c I just purchased $100 in GCs from the latest best buy sale.
    Cheers,

  • What is your wired ethernet connection speed during Time Machine backup

I am curious as to what transfer speeds everyone is getting with a wired ethernet connection. The problem I have is I am trying to use Time Capsule as my Time Machine storage. However, even with a Cat6 cable my average transfer rate is between 250 and 300kb/s. Once in a while that rate rockets up to 16mb/s but that burst only lasts a few seconds. At this rate I am backing up about 1GB an hour. This is going to take me 7 days just to do my initial backup which is nuts. Something has to be wrong with this thing. It just can't seem to sustain a decent transfer speed.

When connected by ethernet to my iMac, I checked the transfer speed to the TC several times by moving a 1GB file and it only took a little over a minute. The 1 GB per minute speed also was consistent with the time it took to backup of my iMac harddrive to the TC over ethernet. Don't know how to explain this difference from those experiencing much slower transfer rates. Could it be that when you are connected by ethernet your airport connection is still active and the transfer of data is taking place over the wireless connection instead?? Moving data between the TC and a connected USB drive, however, is very slow for me.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum + Barracuda 7200.9 HD--what transfer rates to expect?

My HD is SATA II set up as RAID0.  I have only one HD in the system.  What kind of transfer rate can I expect?  I've run some benchmarks--3D Mark, PC Mark, SiSoft Sandra, and N-bench.  I forget which one gave me the HD transfer rate, but the rate was 55 MB/sec.  It seems like the HD should be faster than that.
    Any comments would be welcome!

    Thanks syar2003!
That's what I wanted to hear. Yes, I have enabled 3gb transfer rate using Hitachi Feature Tool and I'm using Nvidia drivers. I am not sure how to enable NCQ in the Hitachi Feature Tool. I don't see that option there. Where is it? Only 3gb/s change and "spread spectrum" option, which, by the way should I enable it or not???
I'm going to go and check later if in the drivers tab I have NCQ enabled or not. And you're right, with MS drivers, you can't do that.
As far as RAID goes, even if I later add secomd SATA II drive, I've read several benchmarking articles that there is almost no improvement in real life performance (read: in games and apps) with RAID 0 setup over non-RAID setup with 2 separate drives, but twice as likely data loss, naturally.
This link has 3 references to reputable discussions
Am I right about those conclusions?
What people mean theoretically and what you personally feel running raid 0 is two seperate things.
Another thing is that reviewers always use large stripe size and this wont help for a mixed use with OS loaded on the raid.
OS on raid 0 need stripe size 16 or 32 as the partition is mostly filled up with smaller files and we want that files to split
on two drives over the raid.
I've been running raid0 since nforce2 , and running OS on single disk again feels like a performance loss for sure.
The fault tolerance thing is not an aspect as all I install on the raided volume can be reinstalled or imaged back .
Never lost a disk yet though , but had data corruption due to the non locked sata 1/2 on the nforce3 (cover yourself when OC'ing is wise).

  • Connect RE1000 via wired not wireless

Can the RE1000 connect to the network via the Ethernet jack? We've got a big house with plaster/metal lath walls and it doesn't seem to be picking up the wireless signal of the E4200 V2 once I configure it in the same room, then move it to the other side of the house. Can it be connected via wired Ethernet (we've got jacks throughout the house), or is that not how a range extender works? If not, is there any other solution, like re-install my old WRT54G and use that as well as the E4200?

Most likely I'd use the RE1000 it as an access point. But it doens't really matter if one way works and works more easily so I can get WiFi though the house with the E4200V2 at one end and the RE1000 at the other.

  • File Transfer speeds in Fios Home network...

What should the normal speed (mb per second) on transferring files between two hard wire computers on a home network...
I'm averaging around 1mb per second and that doesn't seem right...
I have a normal Fios triple play setup/ all desktops connecting w/cat5 and laptops are wireless..and whatever router verizon sends with the package.
Any info on what transfer speeds would be great...
    Thanks

I know there have been speed issues with Windows Vista and TCP receive window scaling. Remote differential compresion in Windows Vista should also not be installed or enable. If you have Vista be sure you have SP1 and have optimized the connections. There have also been many issues with XP to Vista. I would look at the Operating systems, and doubt very stronly that the switch in the router supplied with FIOS would have anything to do with it. Look for information on files transfers with Vista, if you are running it. I am, and love Vista but had similar issues before tweeking it.

  • AEBS won't assign IP via Wired ports, but it does assign IP Wirelessly

I'm having the strangest problem, my AEBS will assign an IP address in the 192.168.1.X range when connected to it wirelessly, but when I connect to it via one of the wired ethernet ports in the back I get a bad IP (169.XXX.XXX.XX).
This started happening over the weekend and I have tried reseting the unit and still can't get the AEBS to assign the correct IP over Wired ports, not even to a Airport Extreme connected via wired ethernet on another room (all I get is the amber flashing light on the AX).
    Any help would be appreciated.
Black MacBook, Intel iMac & Mini Dual Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Duane,
Yes I did configure my AEBS to give IP's in the range of 192.168.1.XXX. But when I connect my MacBook via Airport I get the correct 192.168.1.XXX IP, but if I connect it via Wired Ethernet i get the other 169.XXX.XXX.XXX address. This also happens with my Airport Express that it also gets an IP in the 169.XXX.XXX.XXX range which is consistent when a device doesn't issue a correct IP address.
    Any help is much appreciated
