What Type Discs - and System DVD Backup Problems

I am very new to Macs and like many others here, I am a convert, after 18 years of using both MS-DOS and Windows based machines.
What a difference this iMac is, very impressive, but I am slightly miffed I missed out on the Intel Mac by a few days (literally).
Anyhow I have a few questions I am hoping you might be able to assist me with:
1. I do not know what the difference is between single layer type discs and any other type.
2. I do not know the difference between DVD–R and DVD+R type discs and which I might choose for what application. (I know the RW types are for reading and writing to repeatedly)
3. How do I do a “Multi-session” to a CD+RW or DVD-RW Disc? I have quite a few of these from my PC days and when I used one on my G5 I used the ‘Burn’ option in Finder to add a few small files. Unfortunately after I burned the files to the disc, I found I could not add any more later. In Windows, I could use these types of discs by just dragging files on and off no matter how many times I wanted.
4. My biggest problem is backing up the two Apple system discs that came with my iMac G5 20” (iSight).
I have purchased some Apple branded DVD-R discs which are 4.7 GB in capacity, but the Apple System (Install) disc 1 is 5.59GB in size (according to Get Info).
I have tried using the DiskUtility program to make an image using the DVD/CD Master option. This will make the Disc Image but of course when it comes to writing it to the blank DVD disc it states that the disc image is too big for the supplied media (the 4.7GB DVD).
Does anyone here know how I can back this disc up please, because I am worried that it will become damaged or scratched over time, no matter how careful I am with it?
All help and advice appreciated.
Drusus

Welcome to the fold!
You ask some good questions and ones that a lot of people do not know the answers to since they have just never run into the technology.
A single or double layer DVD is just like it sounds. One can write one layer of data on a disk (about 4.7GB) and the other can actually write on two layers one the same side of the disk for a total of about 8.5GB of data.
The difference between the -R and +R disks is not as crucial as it was when DVD recording technology was in its infancy. When the tech was being developed, home DVD player manufaturers chose the -R format while computers went with the +R format. Nowadays, most DVD players and computers will read and write both types of disks, but if you are making a DVD movie for grandma for whom you bought a DVD player 5 years ago, you will want to use the -R disks as her player will most likely not read the +R disks.
There is no way to burn a true multisession DVD in Mac OS X. Sorry. You can follow Ken Stone's process for burning a multisession CD though.
I suppose if you buy dual-layer DVDs, you can make that image of the install DVDs, but since I have used them exactly once in the last 2 years, I am not worried about them becoming damaged.

Could you please tell me, what type of Technical system ( Web AS ABAP, Web AS Java Standalone,Third-Party ) we have to create for Webservice -> XI -> R/3 or JDBC scenario.

    Prashanth,

    1. Receiver RFC adapter never validates against the Business System. You can use a Business Service/ third party Business System etc. It does not need the logical system name in any way and so you can use anything you want.
    2. Sender RFC adapter expects a Business System with Correct Logical System Name by default But, in the sender RFC adapter , select Advanced Mode and DeSelect Option <b>verify Sender System</b> and you can use a Business Service etc.

  • HT2499 My DVD player has stopped taking discs and the DVD player no longer recognizes the drive.  I bought an external player.  How do I switch the DVD player from the internal drive to the external?

My DVD Player in my MabBook Pro, System 10.8.2, has stopped accepting discs and is no longer recognized by the DVD driver.  I purchased an external Blue-ray Disc player/writer.  It is a Samsung.  I downloaded their driver so the drive shows up on my desktop.  But how do I switch the DVD player over from my internal to my external drive?

In addition to RRFS's advice, please post in the correct forum. This forum is for iMac's, you mentioned you have a MacBook Pro. They're similar but still pretty different hardware.

  • DPM 2010 System Drive and System State backup times increased dramatically

Using DPM 2010 to backup several computers, hypervisors, and the DPM server it self, a stand alone server all of a sudden no longer backs-up within a reasonable amount of time. This is just happening on the C drive and System State. The D drive and all other
servers and hypervisors are running smoothly. You can see below that something changed on December 11th. Backups for those two items when from about an hour to over 10 hours each. This is causing all other backups that have yet to run to be canceled because
we do not typically like the backups to run during business hours.
No changes to the server had been made. Updates were not applied to that server until December 18th. The server has been restarted. The agent version is the latest v3.0.7706.0. Ran the command "vssadmin list writers", show no errors. Any insight
would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I updated the exclusions based on the following article using the executables and path listed in TechNet article above but to no avail. Verified AV policy applied.
    https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB68701
Will have to figure out how to disable AV during backups and enable after completions.
Will probably write a PowerShell script for this.

  • Oracle 9i Client and System.Data.OracleClient Problems

I have an application server that has an ASP.NET webpage that queries an Oracle database on another machine through ODP.NET.
The app server's machine's OS is Microsoft Windows XP SP2 with IIS and .NET 2.0 Framework installed and configured correctly.
The following Oracle software is installed (from OUI inventory listing)
Oracle Services For Microsoft Transaction Server 9.2.0.7.0
    Oracle ODBC Driver 9.2.0.7.0
Oracle Provider for OLE DB 9.2.0.7.0
    Oracle Objects for OLE 9.2.0.7.0
Oracle Data Provider for .NET 9.2.0.7.0
    Oracle 9i Client 9.2.0.1.0
    Sun JDK 1.3.1.0.1a
When the ASP.NET page attempts to connect to the Oracle instance on the remote machine via the Data provider I get the following message...
System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Exception: System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.
    Source Error:
An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.
    <<snipped>>
I know the connectivity between the client on the app server (SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.1.0)
and the remote database (Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0)
is working since sqlplus sessions connect and the NET Manager tests through Local Service Naming succceed.
I've tried the "ORACLE_HOME permission changes" solution for Autenticated users as articulated here ....
    http://jasondotnet.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!BD40DBF53845E64F!122.entry
    but the error persists.
In the list of oracle installed products above, I installed the first 5 (ODP.NET) before the last 2 (Oracle 9i client). Would this matter ? At first I thought perhaps the ODP.NET component didn't "know" about the client since it was installed before there was one on that app server.
    Feeback much appreciated.

Well I figured it out. I guess...
    1) Uninstalled all Oracle Software Products
    2) Rebooted the machine.
    3) Manually removed C:\oracle\ora92\.
    4) Installed and configured the following
    * Oracle 9i Client 9.2.0.1.0
    5) Installed and configured the following
    * Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server 9.2.0.7.0
    * Oracle ODBC Driver 9.2.0.7.0
    * Oracle Provider for OLE DB 9.2.0.7.0
    * Oracle Objects for OLE 9.2.0.7.0
    * Oracle Data Provider for .NET 9.2.0.7.0
    6) Gave the following accounts Full Control over the ORACLE_HOME directory
    * ASP.NET Machine Account
    * Internet Guest Account
    * Launch IIAS Process Account
    6) iisreset
    Conclusion....
The order in which Oracle components are installed does matter.

  • What type of help system is best

I am a new user (on the 30-day trial actually) who has been
given the job of creating a help manual for our customers. I would
like to incorporate pdf, word docs, videos and external chm into
the project. What's the best alternative? RoboHelp for Word?
RoboHelp for HTML? Or can I use a combination?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks from a novice.
    Mike

Hi Mike. If the objective is to produce a manual (and only a
manual) then I guess you could use anything format. If however you
want to also have output in a CHM file or on a website then it
certainly does. You could start by checking out
    this
article on Rick Stone's excellent site which explains the
differences between the formats. You should also check out
    this
article on Peter Grainge's (also excellent) site on producing
printed documentation from RH. The answer you choose will depend on
where the output is to be stored and published. If only a printed
manual is required, I'd probably go for a CHM or (spit) Word

  • Time Capsule and iTunes full backup problem

    Hi,
Every time I add something to my iTunes library the time capsule does a full backup of the entire library rather than just doing an incremental backup.
This has only been happening for the last month or so but it is very annoying and has resulted in my 2TB time capsule starting to delete older backups!
Any ideas why this might be happening and any suggestions on how to solve it?
I could delete all the previous backups and start again but would prefer not to have to do that.
    Thanks,
    Anthony

I understand that you were doing an image backup and when it was nearly finished you received  the error (0x80070003).  Here is a link to a Microsoft answer to assist you. Windows backup error 0x80070003 ( Answered by Vinod N)
I am unsure if you would be able to start again and pick up on disk 99, as once you have repaired it, it will have changed from when you first ran the backup.  The disk you used were not read, writeable, so you would not be able to reuse them.  You may find that an external drive would be a more economical way to do your backups. The data would be in one place and easier to store.  If you decide to use a USB stick it must not be more then 32GB and will not say Windows 8 on it.
You can most likely purchase an External drive for about the cost of replacing the disks.  Here is a link to HP Shopping External storage , but you can purchase one at many places, computer shops, Staples,Walmart, and Office Depot are just a few.  I hope this helps.

  • Windows 2012 System State Backup Fails

We have a Windows 2012 Domain Controller VM that we would like to backup the System State using DPM. Agent has been installed and the Windows Backup has been added.
When the backup runs in DPM, the job fails. Here is the error code:
DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code:  0x12363C0). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)
When we try and create the backup using Windows Backup, the following error is in the log file:
following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
We have tried attaching a separate drive and backup to a shared location. Both fail.
We have tried backup of just a few files on the DC instead of the System State, this fails as well.
All VSS Writers show as Stable with no errors
    Server has the latest updates
Server has been rebooted, same issue
VM is Windows 2012 on a Windows 2008 R2 clustered host and is using Dynamic Disks (not fixed disks).
Anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on?

    Hi,
If any of the following are true, you will not be able to backup a system state to that volume.
    • Make sure that the target volume has no shadow copy before the backup starts.
    • If a system state backup is stored on a source volume, backup settings should be configured for full backups. By default, settings are configured for full backups.
    • Periodically check that no other user or program maintains a shadow copy on the target volume.
    • Do not keep volume level backups and system state backups in the same location.
    • The volume used to store the system state backup needs twice the amount of free space as the size of the system state backup until the backup completes
Meanwhile please check if it is caused that you are backing up to a critical drive. Try modify the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup\
Set the value of this entry as follows:
    Name: AllowSSBToAnyVolume
    Data type: DWORD
    Value data: 1

  • DV6-3122us/ after and during Factory restore problems

This is a DV6-3122us 64 bit notebook, 500GB hard drive, 4 GB ram, Windows 7 Home Premium OS. I restored it from the Factory purchased recovery discs, and I had a problem with that, had to do it 3 times kept locking up at 9% on the restore part. It finally went through then said couldn't install, turned it off, and it was installed. This is Windows 7 Home Premium. Now I have lock ups when updating. The HP assistant  loads but says it has errors at the very top, and doesn't show the system information at the bottom. The hard drive only shows 80 GB allocated, and 397 unallocated. This is all the original hardware, which has been tested and has passed, memory has passed. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Right click on the partition ( C:\ ) you want to Extend into the now unallocated partition and click on Extend Volume.
    2. Click on Next for the Welcome to the Extend Volume Wizard window
    3. Select the amount of space in MB you want to use from the unallocated partition to use to Extend this partition
    4. Select all of the available space .
    5. Click on Next.
    6. Click on Finish in the Completing Extend window
You will now see the Disk Management console with the new extended partition volume ready to be used.
    7. Close Computer Management.
******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.******
