What type of Mac do I need please?

Hi ,
I would like some advice on the type of Mac and Spec I need please for my business. I am unsure about whether I should get a macbook pro, imac or desktop mac pro. Most computer jargon goes straight over my head so please if you answer use small non technical words!!!
This is what I need the computer for:
1. Top quality Video Editing - Final Cut Pro. I will be using the computer for a lot of Video Editing. I need a computer that is capable of rendering video at fast speeds without compromising the performance too much.
2. Multi-tasking - I want to be able to be working on photoshop, whilst encoding or compressing video, downloading something from the web and running a few programmes at the same time such as InDesign etc
3. Disk Space - I will have a lot of video content (raw footage and edited that I need to store) but having said that, I'm guessing a slight upgrade to a 2TB hard drive would do.
4. My business works with the latest Online Games such as World of Warcraft and so the Graphics Cards / Memory / Processor Speeds needs to be able to run these online MMORPGs at the optimal speeds, frame rates etc
That is pretty much it. I am unsure about what type of Mac computer to get. My budget is tops £5k including VAT but I'd prefer not to spend that if I don't need to.....I just want a computer (27 inch screen) that can do all the above comfortably.
Thanks very much for any help that is offered, much appreciated,

MHz and GHz matter.
Also, dual processor has overhead.
6-core single processor is the equal or better and optimized even to an 8-core (which would be 2.93GHz and BTO$)
Blame Apple for "hiding" the 6-core.
Poor web site design: have a page for single processor configurations, not "Quad-core models" where there is BTO 3.33GHz for $1200 extra. Buy your own 2.8 and buy W3680 $600, then sell the 2.8, and you walk away with $900 saved.
Buy the Special (not avail in UK) 2.8 for US$2119 and upgrade processor in under hour.
Refurbished Mac Pro 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Apple Store (U.S.)
Offer a dual processor 12-core @ 3.33GHz for the high end most demanding (and US$7.5K or more?)
That is what MPG and OWC Mac Pro Turnkey Program can do. And MPG does sell custom configs configured and tested.
I would never recommend 8-core at this point. You spend $6200 for 2.93GHz x 8, ($2500 more than 6-core and still 400MHz slower per core);  2.4GHz is a joke, and even the 2.66 US$5000 is not even close! Nope.
Build a workstation, that's another matter and gets interesting if your primary apps and OS run on Windows.

  • What type of mac do i need for home use to watch and edit videos

What type / power of MAC do i need for home use to watch and edit vedeos as well as basic computer work?

Any of the new Macs for home - iMac or MacBook Pro are even fine. You don't need a 65lb workstation tower. If you want a tower for how well and long they hold up, and can be upgraded, that is another matter and fine and might be overkill at first.
Even the base Mac Pro will get you there.

  • What type of screwdriver do I need to install AirPort/Bluetooth Card  A1126

My airport extreme card was causing kernel panics, and I discovered one antenna wire was unplugged, but without unscrewing the card, I'm unable to plug the antenna back in. My question is what type of screwdriver do I need to unscrew the card? I have a 17" iMac G5 without the built in iSight and the layout is exactly like the one pictured in this DIY guide : http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG517inchharddrive.pdf
Thanks for any help you can provide! :-D

Thank you for the link, but they only list a DIY install guide for the original iMac G5. My airport/bluetooth card is very similar/almost exact to the card found in the iSight iMac G5s.
My logic board layout looks exactly like this http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacg517inch_PowerSupply.pdf as opposed to http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG517inchAirPort.pdf where the airport card is much larger and doesn't require a special screwdriver for replacement. I'm not really in need of install instructions, but rather what specific screwdriver/allen wrench is needed to get the card off the board.
thank you guys for any info you can provide...

  • For the new airport extreme what type of cable do I need to connect to my cable modem. Is Cat5 OK or will that bottle neck things?

For the new airport extreme what type of cable do I need to connect to my cable modem. Is Cat5 OK or will that bottle neck things?

Assuming that your cable modem has Gigabit Ethernet ports (possible, but it probably does not) Cat 5e or Cct 6 would do the job that you need.
If the cable modem is using a 10/100 Mbps port, then Cat5 will be OK.

Just an FYI.  The Macs named PowerMac date from early 2006 and before.  Use this tip to discover where to post once you get your Mac:

The cheapest Mac available new is a Mac Mini.   It is no bigger than many an external hard drive.  But the screen and keyboard and mouse must be purchased separately.  They support USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and pretty much any DVI, HDMI, or displayport display.   Although the iMac is certainly an attractive option if all you want to deal with is deciding on a printer.   I still recommend getting an Apple USB keyboard for the occasional times you may need to troubleshoot startup issues.  Normally not a problem, but as it gets older some issues can be fixed at startup or diagnosed at startup.

what type of modem do i need for time capsule. I can't get it to pick up the net

    Simply bridge the TC..
With DSL you need to either bridge the modem and use PPPoE client which can be difficult to setup.. especially as some modems do not bridge readily..
Or bridge the TC which is simple.. go to the airport utility and select internet page, on v5 utility or network page on v6 utility and select off-bridged mode for the mode of connection.

  • What type of license do i need to buy?

    iSCSI Target Boot Overview
Feature description : By using differencing virtual hard (VHDs). you can use a single operation system image
(the "master image) to boot up to 256 computers. As an example, let's assume that you deployed Windows Server 2008 R2
HPC with an operating system image of approximetely 20GB, and you used two mirrored disk drivers to act as the boot
volume. You would have needed approximately 10TB of storage for only the operating system image to boot 256 computers.
Wiht iSCSI Target Server, you will use 40 GB for the operating system base image, and 2 GB for differencing virtual hard disks
per server instance, totaling 552GB for the operating system images. This provides a savings of over 90% on storage for the
    operating system
    images alone.

    Hi,
Regarding the issue here is related with license, we'd better make a contact with the Microsoft licensing team.
Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites

  • What type of Mac should I buy?

I currently own a 2 year old power book g4. I would like to buy a new mac. Not sure if I should buy a imac or something else. I will use it for email, internet, office suite, iphoto, iweb, itunes, ichat, quickbooks, windows through parallels, and other things for my small business. I don't know which type of mac will be best for me and I'm not sure what forum to post in, so i chose this one. Thanks.

    Hello chrisw427
Any of the new Apple MacBooks or Mac Desktops will blow right past your G4 PowerBook.
On one hand you'll get a bigger display, a little more power and greater storage capacity for your "buck" from the iMac desktop. Also you'll still be able to do the field work with the G4 PowerBook and share between the two.
On the other hand the MacBook's WOW nice!
I know that's not much help, but only you can decide on the best upgrade!

  • HT4259 I am trying to connect airport express to extend the range of my airport tower. What type of cords do I need to connect the airport express to a hardwired outlet in the wall of a bedroom?

I am trying to connect my airport express to extend the range of my network to a bedroom that is hard wired for internet. What type of cord/cords do I need to do that?

You can connect the AirPort Express to the wall port in the bedroom for the setup.....but first....if you have not already done so.....it would be a great idea to make sure that the connection in the bedroom is working correctly.
To do that, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop directly to the wall port in the bedroom using an Ethernet cable. Make sure that the laptop can get a good Internet connection that way.  If it can, this tells you that the cabling is working correctly, so the Express will work well when you connect it up.
If you don't have a laptop with an Ethernet port, then we'll have to assume that the folks that pulled the cables and installed the jacks tested things as part of the installation.
When you are ready to install the Express, you can use an iPhone or iPad if you have one handy for the setup.

  • What type of cable do I need to connect my mac to the TV.

I have a Dynex tv and a newish 15 inch Macbook Pro. I also already have an HDMI cable that fits into the TV so I just need to know what to get to connect the HDMI cable to the macbook.

You would  connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Here's the various types of Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mini+ displayport&sprefix=mini+displayport&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amini+displayport
If it's a post 2010 MacBook Pro it will carry audio through the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. If it's an earlier than Mid 2010 MacBook pro then it can't send audio through the adapter.

  • Problems with my MAC PRO, Help needed please!

Im a photographer using a MAC PRO 2x2 GHz DUAL-CORE INTEL Xeon, MEMORY 1GB 667 mhZ with a Samsung SyncMaster 215tw.
My problem is, on several of my images that I open on either Photoshop cs2 or even Preview I noticed that my blacks look overly pix elated or solarize simple looks like a broken image. I had the image sent to my roommate's Imac and saw the same image there and it looked perfect but not on my Mac Pro. I wondering what's causing this problem. thank you very much.

    Hi again,
Just wondering: by any chance do you have a website where you could upload (at least) one of those photos so I (and we) could get a look at it ourselves?
I use Photobucket.com, I created an separate album there I call "Illustrated Explanations" where others can see (and even copy) examples of photos I want to share or get feedback on.
I like your choice of color profiles for the SynchMaster (Adobe RGB 1998), but are those photos also given the same color profile? If not - there may be a "conflict" between the different profiles which could explain your problem. But there's more to it than that -
Yes, you should have clicked the "Calibrate" button and gone through the calibration steps presented to you. Right now, on the Displays - Color panel, I have three calibration settings for the SynchMaster. First is the original, 2nd one is my first try at re-calibrating and the third is my final * I hope!* calibration. You have to enter a name for each calibration profile you create, mine are: "SyncMaster," "SynchMaster1" and "SynchMaster2." The last is the one the monitor is set to.
As you see, you can do this several times if needed. But if the problem is not eliminated by this procedure, then I would (very much!) think you have a bad monitor and should have it serviced or replaced.
