What types of logs should be kept on activities relating to DBA?

What types of logs should be kept on activities relating to database administrator? How does the operating system assist in maintaining log? What alternatives are available to the IS-Auditor if the operating system does not maintain log?

As has been pointed out in your duplicate thread, these are rather vague and generic questions, so there are no clearly right answers...
What types of logs should be kept on activities
relating to database administrator? That's a business decision, not a technical decision... It depends on government regulations, the type of data in the system, the types of threats that the organization is most concerned with, the performance overhead that is acceptable, etc.
How does the
operating system assist in maintaining log? This is very vague. I don't know how to answer it-- from a database standpoint, the operating system is just holding a file that the DBA (hopefully) cannot update.
What
alternatives are available to the IS-Auditor if the
operating system does not maintain log?Perhaps you're thinking about Audit Vault here?
I need this answer please..! anyone can help meIs this for a school assignment? Or for something in the real world? In the real world, I would expect a lot more information before making any sort of decision on something like this...

    Many Thanks.

I'd like to chime in and offer a differing opinion. The size factor of all SSD's don't leave much to question, but there are a couple other things that you can research and take into account.
The biggest thing to look for after the capcity you want is the connection speed. Your Macbook is last generation compatible with SATA 3.0Gbs transfer speeds, and while you can still utilize an SSD with SATA 6.0Gbs, your connection won't be able to fully utilize the full speed of such an SSD.
The upside is that SATA 3.0Gbs SSD's are selling for much less now on ebay and on Amazon since they are last generation, so you can pick one up on a budget. If money is not an issue and you'd like to spend a bit more for the latest generation SSD that you can transplant into the laptop you want to purchase after your mid 2009, a current generation SATA 6.0Gbs SSD is going to work fine and will also work great in whatever you upgrade to.

  • What type of license should the user be assigned when passing transactions through the DI Server?

What type of license should the user be assigned when passing transactions through the DI Server?
We used to assign indirect access licenses to users that were just using the DI Server.  We have one add-on developer that says that the user has to be a Profession license. Current environment is SAP B1 9.0 PL10.  My understanding was that you could have up to 10 users assigned to a single DI Server license.

    Hi,
    From the license guide,
Indirect Access – has access to any SSP solutions (developed with the SAP Business One DI-API) only. The Indirect Access license is bundled with the DI server. Users who have an Indirect Access license can access a limited number of application forms, but cannot perform any functions with the SAP Business One application. Users who have an Indirect Access license can access an unlimited number of SSP solutions

  • What type of repeater should I use with my new Airport Extreme?

what type of repeater should I use with my new Airport Extreme? Thanks.

If you want to repeat both bands of your dual band AirPort Extreme, another AirPort Extreme would meet these requirements.
If you only need to extend one of the bands that the AriPort Extreme provides, then an Airport Express would do that nicely.

  • What type of partition should I use? Range or Hash or ..?

    Hi,
    I am on Oracle 8.1.7.4 .
I have a table with 10 million rows and looks like its a good candidate for partitioning.
There is a varchar2 column and the data is evenly distributed on the string value. If I want to partition the table on that string value what type of partitioning can I use. How can I give the range, if I use range partition, on the string value ?
    Can/Should I use hash partitioning?
I know that there is a list partitioning in O9i, but I am on 8i.
    Please help.
    Regards

Table volume, in itself, is not enough to warrant partitioning … hope you have some other reasons.
    <quote>
… but would like to partition the table on the mentioned varchar2 column, so that queries would be efficiant.
    </quote>
Since you don’t mention the actual query or class of queries, maybe it is worth mentioning that partitioning could speed up some queries but also can slow down a lot more other queries.
    <quote>
So, how can i re-create the table partitioned on a varchar2 column
    </quote>
No different than numbers or dates?
    create table tp
    ( str   varchar2(10)  not null
    ,fill  char(20)      not null
    partition by range(str)
    ( partition p1 values less than ('F')
,partition p2 values less than ('L')
,partition p3 values less than ('R')
,partition p4 values less than (maxvalue)
    insert into tp
    select substr(object_name,1,10), lpad('x',20,'x')
    from user_objects
    flip@FLOP> select * from tp partition (p2);
    STR        FILL
    F1         xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    GENERATE_R xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
IPSDEV.US. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThe link to Tom’s article is fine … it just happens to be one of the few threads he’s not mentioning that partitioning is not the magic fast=true mechanism … look for some other articles on partitioning and you’ll quickly discover his views on this subject.
There may be a case for partitioning … but you haven’t presented any reasonable justification for it … so, why bother?

  • What type of DVD should I use for Windows Backup?

I am wanting to do my Windows Backup and I was wondering what type of DVD media I should use. Is it better to use a RW or only R type DVD.
    I have an HP Omni 220-1180qd, A5W89AV#ABA, running Win7 64 bit.
I thought I read it can use CD's, DVD's but I want to know which would be the better choice.
Thanks for any help and all help is appreciated.

Honestly, an external hard drive would be a better choice. The difference between +R and +R/W is that +R is "Recordable" and +R/W is "Re-Writable". If you intend on making periodic backups, go with an extrernal hard drive... If you intend on making very few backups, consider the DVD+R discs.

  • Pkrb driver: What types of things should this speed up?

    Hi:
I have a Java app that loads XML data into Oracle 8i using the XSU classes. Running outside of Oracle's JVM on an NT, it loads with a certain speed. I have code in there to choose the pkrb drivers when making a connection when applicable. When I use loadjava to load this app into 8i, it runs, but it actually runs a bit SLOWER than running outside (even if using JDK 1.2 outside of Oracle).
I understood that when running in Oracle's JVM, since it was in the SGA, and the pkrb jdbc driver took advantage of that, etc., I should expect a fairly good boost in performance. What types of applications can expect this? Java procedures that deal with manipulating resultsets? It certainly doesn't appear to help table inserts.
    Thanks,

FWIW, it is Oracle 8.1.6 running on a PIII 800.

  • What type of query should be posted in the Guidanc...

    Hi all,
This board is primarily for help and suggestions relating to the community forums themselves, not for help and suggestions on BT products or services.  For example, if you don’t know how to quote another post, or are not sure how to change your avatar then this is the correct place to post those type of questions.  It may also be where you post a suggestion for a new topic area or other ideas for the community forums.
Posts that are looking for help or suggestions with queries relating to BT products and services should be posted in the most relevant categories – eg. Phone, Broadband, TV or Billing.  You may notice that if those queries get posted in the H&S board then the mods will move them to the most relevant board.
What type of posts get moved from this board?
Some of the posts the mods have to move from this board are related to email queries, PCs/hardware queries etc.  As these posts are all generally linked to broadband and your home PC then the best place to post this in is the ‘BB in the Home’ board.  The ‘BB out and about’ board focuses on BT Fon, BT Openzone, BT Mobile Broadband, and the BT Broadband Anywhere service.
If you are not sure where to post, read the list under each board title, this should help you choose where to post.  If you are unsure, make your best guess and the mods will move it if they need to.
    Thanks,

  • What type of connection should i use?

Not sure if i should i post this here or web tier api's, but here goes...
I have a servlet in a tomcat webserver and i want it pass information between it and a standard j2se application running on the same machine.
I'm not sure what type of connection i should use?
    DataStream?
    Socket?
    HttpConnection?
    Any other recommended method?
Or if i need a network connection like that at all?
    Thanks for the help

The most straightforward method would be to use rmi since both are running java. that is the least amount of work on your part in terms of managing connections and data marshalling. any of the other solutions add more burdens in one or both of these areas.

  • What type of restore should I use?

My computer is properly backed up using Time Machine. I created a partition using Bootcamp so I could install Windows (I haven't actually installed Windows yet). However, after testing Parallels, which is an amazing program!, I want to get rid of the partition and use Parallels instead.
My understanding is that I have to wipe my hard drive to erase the partition. Assuming this is true, what version of restore should I use? I want the computer to be exactly as it is in the backup, except for the partition.

    Ian Chamandy1 wrote:
When I go into the Partition tab, the diagram and text shows my HD as having 148.73 gigs of space (it appears in blue on top in the diagram) and "available space" being 49.5 gigs (it appears in white on the bottom).
Once you deleted the Boot Camp partition, you now have only a single partition. The light-blue shading represents the data in the partition; the white are represents the rest ("available space").
Is this how it should be? I clicked on both the blue area and the white area but that doesn't select them. There is no line between them for me to drag. Also, the "-" and "Options" buttons are grayed out.
If there's only one partition on the disk, the whole diagram, containing both the blue shading and white area, covering the entire disk, should be outlined in medium blue. The "-" sign is grayed-out because there's only the one partition. If there were 2 or more, you could use it to delete one.
If you wanted to make a second partition, you would click the plus sign. DU would then change the diagram, splitting the existing partition. Then you'd see a line between the two, which you could drag up or down, etc. The Options button is used when setting-up a new or erased drive "from scratch," to specify the *Partition Map Scheme* for the entire drive.
Browse Disk Utility's help for a general idea of what it can do. (It's one of the few apps that has fairly comprehensive explanations and instructions.)
I should mention that I installed Parallels so I could run Windows and Mac OS simultaneously (it is quite amazing!). Could it be that Parallels creates an unlabeled partition?
I don't do Windoze, but it's my understanding that Parallels makes one huge OSX file that contains the entire Windows system, rather than the way Boot Camp uses a separate partition. I also understand that this huge file is automatically excluded from Time Machine, so it doesn't back the whole thing up every time anything is changed. You can check this via TM Preferences > Options.

  • What type of server should I buy?

I currently have a Windows SBS 2003 server.  I am a health care provider with 25 computers.  We have used an application that has been a DOS based program for years.  We are getting ready to convert over to a cloud based practice management
system.  We will still need to run our DOS based program for at least two years.  The DOS program runs on a 32bit not a 64 bit.  We have 8 computers running XP.  So I have asked my local IT guy of 20 years what he thinks we should
go to next.  I also got a quote from a different IT company.  Of course they are recommending two different things I do not know what I should do.
My local guy wants to install 8 new computers with windows 8 (which my boss does not want) and all my other13 computers have Windows 7 Professional. Then he wants to install for my server SBS 2011 Standard for emailing we would use Exchange 2010.
The SBS 2003 server is an exchange server but he never set up the email portion.
This other IT company wants to install windows server 2012 standard edition R2and he would install Vmware esx 5.5 virtual server platform so that I can have 1 computer in my office that  would run an Opto 32 bit server and then use a
different "server" to run my new practice management system which is a cloud based system. Plus file share anything else I want to setup.  Then he wants to install Windows 7 pro on the new 8 workstaions that we need.
The quotes are about the same but I feel that I am getting more for my money with the new guy and the ability to grow. As well as maybe better security and reliability. HIPAA wants your system to have bitlocker disk encryption software.  Not sure which
    system has that.
Please advise I know very little about computers so when my IT guy talks he wants to talk me out of the virtual platform and I think it is because he doesn't have that much experience with the set up.   Virtual server is not a hosted virtual server.
    It is just the platform

    Hi Alexandre,
Seems like digicert ucc certificate is costly. Earlier I used them for a year then switched to Godaddy. Its time for renewal as godaddy certificate expires in few days. Recently one of my customer referred me this cheaper price UCC certificate
    at https://www.ssl2buy.com/comodo-multi-domain-ssl.php
I checked list of recommended certificate authorities by Microsoft and comodo is there, so I don't have any question about compatibility. I found this ssl2buy is comodo reseller and offer ucc certificate just for $45 discount price (regular price is $60).
I reviewed this reseller reputation and it seems good and also contacted their live support and seems everything legit.
I tried their product and it seems 100% compatible in exchange environment. I used .local domain names to add in UCC certificate but later I recognized (advised by their support team) that CA/B forum depreciated .local names in SSL.
Do you recommend we should stop accessing server with .local and hostname?
