"What U Hear" Missing in Win7

'"What U Hear" Missing in Win7? I have two separate Sound Blaster X-FI Extreme Audio soundcards (though of different makes) and the same issue with both? - ever since upgrading to Windows 7 neither card, after properly installed and with latest driver installed, will display "What U hear" in my audio stack.
A point of clarrification on the cards:
One is a PCI SB0790, the other however is manufactured by MSI, and is a PCIe MS 432, but still bears the creative labs logo, as well as the X-FI Extreme Audio product name and it also has a driver put out by Creative labs so it should still be valid to bring up here.
I've run through a few tutorials I found online such as <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20595-what-u-hear-recording-enable.html"]http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20595-what-u-hear-recording-enable.html but to no avail - neither "What U Hear" or "Stero Mixer" show up in the list of available recording devices. Prior to installing Win7 I was primarily using the MSI card and "What U Hear" was indeed available in my audio stack.
Any suggestions?

+Re: "What U Hear" Missing in Win7G ?
Agreed! I have an X-FI Extreme, upgraded to win 7, installed the latest audio drivers, and have just spent the last 2 hours trying to get my "what u hear" back without any luck at all.
I'll also mention that "disabled devices" are shown in the recording options, so that is not the issue.
I was using vista before with the exact same hardware and "what u hear" was available. The driver version was 5.2..200 dated 4/02/07 ... The current driver for windows-7 is 5.2..208 dated 3/08/2009. Maybe installing an older driver would do the trick? I don't know if that would work as I haven't been able to find the old driver I was using for download (just been bombarded with broken links). I'm also guessing that you'll be held hostage to the latest drivers in windows 7.
Get the latest drivers to lose functionality? Sounds like something apple would pull on you!
If anyone has a solution for this, please let us know, otherwise I'll be rolling all the way back to good old XP again.

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP on my computer and wipe out my hard dri've. I lost my original SB Li've install CD so I downloaded a driver from the creativelabs website to reinstall my sound card. Everything works again on my sound card except I no longer have a "What U Hear" option. Is there a way to fix this?

• What u hear problems in vista 32bit

#What u hear problems in vista 32bit2 I just installed the newer variety of the x-fi notebook card with the wireless broadcast function, and for whatever reason installing the drivers failed the first time, I tried a clean install after that, and the microphone is displayed as not available and what u hear isn't present either, so is there a problem in the driver installation or are those features just non existent in the newer software I also noticed that line in works and the microphone input doesn't, gah, windows fixta is irritating,
EDIT: I found out how to get what u hear to work, I kind of felt stupid but all you have to do is right click in the recording device manager and hit show disabled devices and boom what u hear and the microphone input are there, for what reason I don't know why they were disabled in the first place, but hope this helps anyone with the same problem

• [WIN7] Enable Microphone and "What U Hear" at the same time?

Hey folks!
I am trying to enable both at the same time on my Windows 7 in order to record Battlefield 2 and my own voice at the same time.
Please do NOT start with "do this and that", I have tried everything for at least 1 year by now and the only way to make it work is to have microphone and "What U Hear" enabled. Apparently it is not possible. In order to activate one of both you have to make it "Default" record device but then the other device gets disabled. Trying to record the disabled device obviously ends up in silence.
What is the reason for that and how to enable BOTH devices at the same time?
I am using PAX Drivers which the maker always updates to the latest Creative Drivers. So I am up to date.
Thank you a lot in advance.

Thank you for your reply.
Well, yes, the microphone is activated. And if I put the microphone playback volume to 100 I can hear myself talk even with "What U Hear" as my default recotding device. But once battlefield 2 starts it uses the default recording device for the in-game voice over IP. If I select "what U hear" as the default device it will basically put the game sound into the VOIP...
What I tried was - set microphone as default device, launch BF2 so it registers the microphone as VOIP input, then alt tab out, select What U Hear as default device but it does not get activated! I only see a bar at the microphone.
What I want is to be able to have TWO volume bars, in What U Hear AND Microphone so I can use the microphone for BF2 and What U Hear as gameplay-sound for my recording device.
In Windows XP this was possible. In Windows 7 this is missing.
The problem here is that once a recording device (the Default one usually) is being used by a program it BLOCKS the other recording devices.

• WHQL X-Fi Driver missing "What You Hear" recording

I have tried this 3 times to make sure it is not a simple glitch?
If you uninstall your X-Fi driver and do a clean install using the WHQL driver from the MS Update, the driver installs without the ?What You Hear? recording option. If you update to the driver without uninstalling the old one, the option remains available so this seems to me a small problem...however it troubles me to see that it is missing form the MS driver if you do a clean install.
Is this an option that MS is pushing to have removed ?
Message Edited by SGV on 04-07-200703:46 PM

I have the software from the CD installed, as I stated earlier, the "What You Hear" option is only missing if you do a CLEAN install of the drivers from the Windows Update. That is?to say if you install the drivers from Microsoft's website with no other X-Fi driver installed on your system.
If you installed the update over a previous version of the drivers, then the "What You Hear" option remains available.
I checked this three times by doing a clean install from the Windows Update and then installing the other driver from Creative?s website.
All three times I deleted the X-Fi driver from my system, then installed the one directly from the Windows Update. I would check my record settings and could not find the "What You Hear" option. I would then install the driver from Creative?s website and checked the settings again and the ?What You Hear? option was available.
If you just installed the Windows Update driver over the one previously on your system without first deleting it, then yes, you should have the "What You Hear" option.
I also could not get the "What You Hear" recording option in any software application that previously had it (ie, Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge) until I installed the driver form the Creative website.

• Missing "What You hear" on X-Fi Titanium

Hi,
at first, sorry for my bad english, but without practice, its not easy
Last week I bought an brand new Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Professional. I?m using Vista Ultimate x64 an the drivers from the original CD (Driver version 2.7.).
On my old X-Fi Extreme Music, I had a recording Device which was called "What you hear" (or "What U hear" , the original german description is "Was Sie h?ren"). It has the same function like "Stereomix" on other soundcards.
I miss this recording device on my new X-Fi Titanium, there is only the microphone, the line in and the digital in. Is this feature not longer Part of the Productline? I think it was verry useful.
Is there any chance to enable "What you hear" on the new X-Fi Soundcards? I reinstalled the driver finally, but this was not the solution^^
Again, sry for my bad english, but may, somebody can help me.
Best regards

Hm, my onboard Sound (its called ASUS SupremeFX X-Fi, but its only a Analog Devices Chip with some X-Fi software feature)? already have the "Stereomix". Hm... I will miss the "What U hear" on the X-Fi, imho its a not a good decision to remove this feature. Its also a bit mindless, because it looks like that other manufacturer still use this feature and intigrate it in their soundcards...:smileyindifferent:

• Record what you hear with X-Fi on Win 7?

I searched around and still have a problem with this.
I've tried both the Windows Update driver and the Creative driver from the Soundblaster X-Fi Support page.
Neither have given me the option to enable "Stereo Mix" or "wave Out" or anything to enable me to Record what I hear through my speakers. (In control panel > sound > right click "show disabled devices" nothing shows up but "Auxiliary")
This used to work fine on XP before I upgraded to Win7. Now I can get it to work...any other ideas besides the ones I've tried already? Thanks.

, I've got this same issue as well. I'm on 2.7.007 drivers in windows 7 64 bit and I don't have any of the options for recording speaker sound. It's a little disappointing. I spent years on a generic integrated sound card and could do this any time I wanted. I upgrade to a titanium x-fi card and love the sound, but I miss those abilities.

Thanks for chipping in.   I discovered something after trying what you suggested.   I have quite a few collections of hits by year from Time Life and Billboard.  I've eliminated duplicate tracks that appear in both collections (or other CDs for that matter), but cross-reference the CD where I deleted the track and placed in in the comments section of the CD track I retained.   If I "search" by song name, only the remaining track appears.   But if I want to hear for example Classic Rock 1964, only those tracks remaining would be there when I pull up that CD.   So, I type "Classic Rock 1964,"  in the search field.  First the boxes on the right of the screen open up showing album icons.  Showing four tracks by album with a button to view 10 more, then four songs with an option to vies 18 more.   I finally noticed that at the top of the boxes is a blue band that reads, :Show Classic Rock 1964 in Music.  When I double click on this blue band, all 24 tracks from the original CD appear in the song list format even though I had deleted two of them because they appeard in a Beach Boys CD.   On those tracks, I had referenced Classic Rock 1964 in the comments field.    So, bottom line, Search will also look in the comments field if you click "filter by all" in the magnifying glass to the left of the search field.   And you can move all tracks that if finds into a song list by double clicking on the blue band.

• Need to record what I hear from speakers with other program

I need to record what I hear with a program that can record a programs video and audio.
Is there any way to set speakers as the recording source, instead of mic, or can I set it to both speakers and mic?
If not, then we need an upgrade to our audio mixer that allows this to be done so we can use programs like Snagit or Camtasia to record our music programs playing.  The way it is now, I can only set the mic as the recording source, so I miss the audio the program is playing but get the video of the program playing it.

Hey guys,
I tried to do some research and it looks like you need to have an external device and its drivers, such as an external microphone, installed on the computer to record audio that can be saved as a sound file. Another Suggestion is to try an auxiliary spliter for your headphones and external speakers?
What software are you using to record your game?
If anyone knows anything different, please let me know.

• "What you hear" recording volume is too

I have Soundblaster Audigy 2 on Vista 64-bit. I recently downloaded new drivers (6.0..242). This is after converting from XP and old drivers.
My "What you hear" settings work and will record using MediaSource Player, but the volume on the recorded file is about 25% the volume of the original file. This is verified upon replaying both the original and newly-recorded files side-by-side or right after one another.
When opening the Sound Panel>Recording Devices>"What You Hear">Levels, the levels are to the max and the balance is to the max for both right and left channels.
Although probably irrelevent, under Sound Panel>Playback Devices>Speakers>Levels, play control levels are max, and all other sublevels are?maxed, balanced maxed, and unmuted. (Sorry for my lack of technical description.)
I play the file on Windows Media Player and volume is maxed on the player as well. The interesting thing is when you look in the Sound Panel, the speakers show maxed volume and the "What you hear" only shows, again 25% of the volume.
Previously, I had no problems with XP and old drivers. I also was once able to revert to old drivers (which I can no longer do) and the problem went away. The difference was that the old drivers had a "Wav" level setting (under Sound Panel>Playback Devices>Speakers>Levels) where you could increase the level. These drivers don't appear to provide this setting.
Is there some setting I'm missing? Any help would be great. Thanks!

If you use "Creative Surround Mixer" --> you can set the .REC source by pressing the icon located above recording level slider.
If you can't see the "W-U-H" option listed there, then check if it's already selected (ear icon).

• Stereomix/What you hear?

? <div class="lia-component-body lia-message-body">hi everybody.
Lately I've been introduced to streaming games to friends online.
Well,I'd like to stream game audio and microphone input.
Since my X-Fi XtremeGamer doesn't have Stereomix I tried the "What you hear" option, but I'm not content with that solution.
It's kind of distracting for me to hear myself saying what I just said a second ago, so I'd like to know if there is a way to turn that off or low, without losing the ability to stream either microphone or game audio.
So what I'm looking for is a combination of "What you hear" for the game audio and regular microphone output, all in audio channel.
Is there a way to do it's Did I miss an option for it somewhere?
Or is there an additional program I need to mix those channels?
I'm on Windows Vista by the way.

bump~

• Microphone and "What U Hear" can't be enabled at the same time.

Hi,
so this is what I am currently doing: I am streaming li've online game play with the help of Flash Media Li've Encoder. It uses the What U Hear option,? without any problems, so far. Sometimes though I would like to coment on whats currently happening (in the game) with "What U Hear" though enabled, my microphone is disabled and I can not do that. Any voip software then ofc. gives me error messages, that my microphone is not available.
Surely there must be a way to enable the mic and what u hear
My OS is Win7 x64
and my soundcard is a creative x-fi xtreme music

Try unmuting mic in playback section of mixer

• "What u Hear" does not work (SPDIF)

- Hi!
"What u Hear" option doesn't work after I changed the output to SPDIF. The question is, how i could record sound that goes through my audio card (X-Fi Xtreme Gamer).
In windows' recording tab are these options for recording:
Microphone
Auxiliary
Line-In
What u Hear
Pls help
I have win 7 ultimate x64 as OS.

new new VisRe: "What u Hear" does not work (SPDIF)Y I have exactly the same issue. When I originally got my new Vista PC, 'what you hear' wasn't available. It became available when I installed the new driver, as indicated here:http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=&CatName=Sound+Blaster&s ubCatID=208&subCatName=X-Fi&prodID=4066&prodName=X-Fi+XtremeMusic&bTopTwenty=&VARSET=prodfaq:PRODFAQ_ 4066,VARSET=CategoryID:
However, If I open 'Smart Recorder' for example, I can select 'What yiou hear (Creative SB X-Fi)' as an option, but hitting record doen't record what is playing on the PC. So it doesn't actually seem to do anything...
...unless anyone knows different?... Is there a setting I missing? Everything looks fine in the 'Recording Divices -> Record' tab...

• (X-Fi Xtremegamer) Recording two streams of audio simultaneously via "What U Hear"

Hello everybody.
I'm running Windows 7 32bit and have downloaded and installed drivers from creative download page.
Also performed an update. Integrated sound card (realtek high def) is disabled from BIOS. So my system
detects only X-Fi Xtremegamer.
I want to be able to record music in background and voice/guitar (input from FlexiJack) together.
Currently I have set "Audio Creation Mode" for my sound card and have chosen FlexiJack input to be a microphone.
So the problem is, when I set "What U hear" in windows recording devices as the default recording device, in idea it must record everything together. Audio being played in background and my voice over it from microphone alltogether.
The problem is, once I set "What you hear" as the default recording device, my microphone immediately goes into "currently unavailable" state. If I put mic back as defaul rec dev, it becomes active again. This is very very frustrating.
I know people here are pros who may have very sophisticated setups with all that MIDI controllers, routing etc. And you may tell me "So whats the problem, just set the music play on one channel of Audition for example and record your voice with mic as default recording device on the other one".
Yes it is a valid notice, but there are situations when I really need to record both, background music/sounds along with microphone input sound simultaneously. A good example is online karaoke site(s) who need both sound streams to be recorded simultaneously and in realtime.
Could anybody, please, give me an advise how to correct this problem? I don't want to throw away such a nice piece of hardware just because of this problem

Oh, boy... You have my sympathy with the 'What-U-Hear' thing...recording two audio streams at once (mic etc)...
I just upgraded my home studio system to a Win7 computer...I use SONAR to do my digital/MIDI work...
On my old WinXP machine (a Pentium 4 with 4 gig RAM), I had the luxury of actually being ABLE to record in 'What-U-Hear' mode...
I figured I needed a new soundcard with my new Win7...so I went out and bought the well-recommended M-Audio Audiophile 192 PCI card...
Big mistake...I CAN'T record ANY 'What-U-Hear' streams at all!!...I wanted to tear out the new M-Audio card and plunk my trusty old Audigy 2 back in...but, the problem is not that Creative doesn't have Win7 drivers...it's that the SOFTWARE that came with it is largely useless according to the Creative site.
Funny, I transferred all my files from the old computer (including all the Creative apps) to the new Win7 computer, and guess what? Good old 'WAVE STUDIO' from 2001 - version 4:12:07 - works just fine (WITH the ****ed M-Audio card, too!)...
However, I STILL can't get the M-Audio 192 to do 'What-U-Hear' recording...!!
I wonder if I DID put the old Audigy in my new Win7 computer...would that most important bit of Creative software that I use all the time (Wave Studio)...work?
What a minefield!
But about your particular problem...I think it is something to do with memory addressing, that the mic won't work with other audio streams...
There is a program called 'DIGITAL CABLES' available on ZDNET for free download (costs $30 in full version) that is SUPPOSED to get around the 'What-U-Hear' problem...but, I'm afraid to screw everything up...since I use my system regularly to do work for my church choir...
cheers...

• Windows7 64 bit and Audigy 2 choppy sound while recording what you hear

Driver version I have currently installed 6.0..37 I tried to record off youtube in "What You hear" while using Wavelab5 mode and the sound is very choppy, I tried every setting I could think of but am unable to record, I managed to get one recording but tnext one with same settings is coming up rearry choppy. Another problem when browsing the support I click on "If your product is not listed above, please click here" I choose Audigy-->Audigy2 but I get nothing in the next window, I tried on FF and IE8 but nothing populates in the next field, found another way to get to the drivers but when I choose Windows 7 64 bit and choose drivers it takes me to the main support page here <a rel="nofollow" href="http://support.creative.com/welcome.aspx"]http://support.creative.com/welcome.aspx

Oh yeah I can hear music (mp3, avi, youtube or any online source) no problem in either winamp, WMP2 or in Wavelab5 while monitoring. It's only the recording that is giving me trouble.

Right where do I start...... I got the latest drivers installed, "What You Hear" was working for about oh four recordings then stopped and back to choppy recorded sound, I went through alll options and nada. So I downloaded Audacity to see if this was a problem with Wavelab and re-tried. Well same thing choppy sound and even rebooting did not help. So I will be taking EVERYTHING!!!!!! CREATIVE off my machine, if these idiots cannot be bothered to release drivers that work then I'm going elsewhere. My music creating will have to be put on hold, my 22m will still have to sit in it's box.
Creative you are all a bunch of ?$"?%$%" idiots period. You have ALWAYS (till now in my case anyway) had good drivers. Even though Windows 7 has been in RC for ages you (absolutely missed that boat, hell you didn't even get up to try to catch it) cannot be bothered to write drivers that work and your idiotic half cooked attempts at customer service to give your bread and butter (that's right your customers who keep you in business) solid drivers are an absolute joke. YOU CAN KISS MY SHINY METAL HINEY!!!!! (thanks Bender lol). I am going to my onboard drivers. Thanks Creative (the name "creative" is kind of contradiction in itself, you should look up the meaning of the word lol). Oh and I will be advising EVERYONe who thinks of upgrading to Windows7 to avoid Creative hardware.
