"What U Hear" Recording with X

Hello,
I have a brand new X-Fi SB audio card on Windows Vista.
I used to have a SB Li've! 5. card, and on that card I could record what was coming out of my speakers, also known as "What U Hear".
I can't seem to find this function on this new card, which is about 4-5 years newer.
How can I record what is coming out of my speakers like the What U Hear function?
Thanks,
Anthony

You can still find the "What U Hear" function in the Audio Creation Mode of the X-Fi drivers.Change to that mode, then look for the "recorder" function region in the lower right hand side of the window. You should see a sky blue bar that opens to "line in" by default. Click on it and a menu drops down with several options, one of the is "What?U Hear". ?Personally, I had hoped that Creative had dropped that silly "What U Hear" designation and chosen something more adult, like "Monitor".

    Hello,
I'm looking for a soundcard with so called "what you hear" recording support under windows, so a possibility to record all audio going to speakers. Is there any model from creative supporting this feature, prefered an external model at USB/Firewire or internal with PCIe?
    TIA for advice

    Which card/software you got there?
If you use "Creative Surround Mixer" --> you can set the .REC source by pressing the icon located above recording level slider.
If you can't see the "W-U-H" option listed there, then check if it's already selected (ear icon).

  • WHQL X-Fi Driver missing "What You Hear" recording

I have tried this 3 times to make sure it is not a simple glitch?
If you uninstall your X-Fi driver and do a clean install using the WHQL driver from the MS Update, the driver installs without the ?What You Hear? recording option. If you update to the driver without uninstalling the old one, the option remains available so this seems to me a small problem...however it troubles me to see that it is missing form the MS driver if you do a clean install.
Is this an option that MS is pushing to have removed ?
Message Edited by SGV on 04-07-200703:46 PM

I have the software from the CD installed, as I stated earlier, the "What You Hear" option is only missing if you do a CLEAN install of the drivers from the Windows Update. That is?to say if you install the drivers from Microsoft's website with no other X-Fi driver installed on your system.
If you installed the update over a previous version of the drivers, then the "What You Hear" option remains available.
I checked this three times by doing a clean install from the Windows Update and then installing the other driver from Creative?s website.
All three times I deleted the X-Fi driver from my system, then installed the one directly from the Windows Update. I would check my record settings and could not find the "What You Hear" option. I would then install the driver from Creative?s website and checked the settings again and the ?What You Hear? option was available.
If you just installed the Windows Update driver over the one previously on your system without first deleting it, then yes, you should have the "What You Hear" option.
I also could not get the "What You Hear" recording option in any software application that previously had it (ie, Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge) until I installed the driver form the Creative website.

  • Need 'What You Hear' recording option for Notebook(Vista)-Does Xi-Fi for Notebooks provide th

    Hi,
I have an Audigy sound card on a Dell desktop and it has the "What You Hear" recording option within Vista. I need the same option for my Dell Notebook, unfortuntately, this notebook uses a Sigmatel card within the motherboard. What device or application to i need to buy in order to get the "What you Hear" recording option to be available?
What am i attempting to do?I often record li've webcasts in which the video portion comes through a Li've Meeting or Lotus Same time application using a Screen Recording Application?BUT the Audio comes from a conference which i use a VoIP software to dial into. I need to be able to record the sound that's been generated through my computer as an internal source. I need to be able to select 'What You Hear' as the default recording device so that the screen recording application i use can also record the audio been played through the PC?Appreciate any help here. Thanks?Kevin

If it'sis not a Creative card, "what u hear" will be called something different. Maybe "stereo mix" or something else. The device just records anything coming from the soundcard. Play around and see if you don't have something similar to "what u hear" with a different name.

  • "What you hear" recording volume is too

I have Soundblaster Audigy 2 on Vista 64-bit. I recently downloaded new drivers (6.0..242). This is after converting from XP and old drivers.
My "What you hear" settings work and will record using MediaSource Player, but the volume on the recorded file is about 25% the volume of the original file. This is verified upon replaying both the original and newly-recorded files side-by-side or right after one another.
When opening the Sound Panel>Recording Devices>"What You Hear">Levels, the levels are to the max and the balance is to the max for both right and left channels.
Although probably irrelevent, under Sound Panel>Playback Devices>Speakers>Levels, play control levels are max, and all other sublevels are?maxed, balanced maxed, and unmuted. (Sorry for my lack of technical description.)
I play the file on Windows Media Player and volume is maxed on the player as well. The interesting thing is when you look in the Sound Panel, the speakers show maxed volume and the "What you hear" only shows, again 25% of the volume.
Previously, I had no problems with XP and old drivers. I also was once able to revert to old drivers (which I can no longer do) and the problem went away. The difference was that the old drivers had a "Wav" level setting (under Sound Panel>Playback Devices>Speakers>Levels) where you could increase the level. These drivers don't appear to provide this setting.
Is there some setting I'm missing? Any help would be great. Thanks!

  • How does "what you hear" work with my surround 5.1 externa

    Hi,
    I am using a usb soundblaster surround 5. external soundcard and recording lp's through the line-in socket of it. I am confused about the setting "what you hear" as opposed the "line-in" setting;
I thought that the purpose of "what you hear" is that you are recording what you hear, i.e. with the altered sound of the graphic eq, eax, cmss 3d etc, but this seems not to be the case as the sound is the same on line-in as it is on what you hear. I want to be able to alter the sound quality/tone and in particular, the width of the stereo, i.e. make it wider, and can't seem to with this system. Shouldn't I be able to change the tonal quality and it be reflected in the recording if I am using "what you hear" as the input ?
Any help on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
P.S. Does anyone know of a software that can slightly alter the stereo i.e. make it wider, given the fact that I would be recording in 24 bit 96k of the soundblaster ? I have audio cleaning lab, and although it works, I think I need a better software for my needs, as the sound quality is very important to me.
    Thanks very much in advance.

I just don't understand the bolted part after reading your post .
By keeping the recording untouched gives you the best possible quality. If you then want to "play" with effects as like spreading the stereo image, then do it on-the-fly rather than 'hard-code' into recorded audio data.
How to-do this while playing ... just use some audio/media software which supports addons (effects).
I could recommend you some players like
Winamp + VSTHost plug-in, MediaMonkey + VSTHost plug-in, Foobar + VSThost plug-in, Steinberg MYMP3PRO, WMP + some plug-ins (though, I don't know if there are this type as you would like of), etc. (there are couple more).
VST/DX EFFECTS plug-ins can be found from KVR - http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php
24-bit/96kHz would give you the best quality but, as you have an external Soundblaster there ... IMO, just use nati've samplerate then (AFAIK, it's 6-bit/48kHz) and if you don't want to use 48kHz wav/mp3 format then just convert Wave files 48->44. using Voxengo r8brain Free and then transfer to mp3 or wma if needed.
For quality sake I would recommend you to get least E-MU 0202 USB.

  • Can't get "What you hear" recording source to wo

I am using a SB Audigy 2 ZS platinum (sb0350p). There is no sound recorded when I try to record from the What you hear source.
I've tried to increase the volume in my advanced settings with no luck. It's if it is muted. I havn't checked any onter line in yet.
    Any ideas?

    Fireryan,
The setup depends on your input and output sources. In the Creative mixer, unmute (enable) a source such as the microphone or Line-In and slide up the volume. If you're using a microphone, unmute that line and click on the red X and check +20dB boost. Also, click the red X over the "Master Control" and make sure you don't have digital output selected (unless that's what you want.)

  • What you hear recording sounds like Phase Shifter!

Hi, when I record with "What you hear (from youtube, etc.) it sounds like it came through a phase shifter: real bad. I have a dell xps 420 with Vista 32 bit and it'scame bundled with?creator premiere, adobe soundbooth, etc. Intel core tm2 quad cpu, 2.66 Ghz, memory 4GB
it seems to record ok with line in and mic. Can someone please help?

Actually, there's discussion about this all over the Internet.
The problem is your move to Vista and Windows 7
Under pressure from the record companies, the ability to record the Stereo Mix output of you computer has been disabled or removed from many new computers.
You may be lucky and find it's only been disabled on your machine.  If so, then do the following:
    To enable:
    ->> go to Control Panel
    ->> Hardware and Sound
    ->> Manage Audio devices
->> in the Recording tab window right click in the white area away from any devices and from the menu enable "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show disconnected devices"
->> right click on Stereo Mix to get the properties window and in Device usage "Use this device (enable)"
However, there have been many reports in here (you can do a search) that some computer manufacturers are actually removing this ability entirely, again under pressure from the record companies.
This being the case, you might try some software called Virtual Audio Cable: http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm
You have to pay for it but at least there's a trial version so you can see if it works for you before laying out your money.

  • "what you hear" recording X-Fi

I've looked around and can't figure it out. So, im posting here in hopes of some help or an answer.
I do alot of sound editing with my music software and like to chop sound clips from stuff i hear coming thru my computer. I had been using MP3 my MP3 .... but since my upgrade to Vista and my upgrade to Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Audio...
I only get the option to record "Master Volume" (which is no sound)
I've tried to mess with some options in my sound properities/recording tab options.... as far as what recording device is working. Only 2 devices (my mic, on the sound card and built in sound) are working... there are other options... auxilary, s/pidf & Line-in. All say currently unavailble with SB X-Fi.
To sum up. I just want to be able to record streaming sound from my computer.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Update: I've tried the show disabled devices.... i dont see anything about what you hear there... however i did get my auxilary to work for recording... though it hasnt worked as far as recording what i hear as of now.

I have an X-Fi Extreme Gamer and it seems to work for me. Although I am getting the snap crackle pop noises, and using the "record what you hear" really amplifies the problem.
Try un-installing all of the drivers and software and re-installing them.

  • "What u Hear" problem with vis

I used to use the option "What U Hear" a lot when i sat in teamspeak/ventrilo, if i wanted to play of a song or something to my friends, then i just switched from Microphone to "what u hear" then the people would hear what i was playing.
Anyway, i've tried this in vista, and so far i've not gotten it to work, so i wonder if anyone here has done it's and can explain to me how its done?
The thing is, i first disable my mic, enable "what u hear", set it to default, the meter comes up showing sound, but when this is done, and i open teamspeak and join my friends servers, and i try to use my push to talk button to "play music/sound" nothing happends, i also sometimes get some sort of error with teamspeak when i have "what u hear" enabled too. So there is a problem somewhere here.
Haven't tried in ventrilo yet, so may be a teamspeak problem as well.
My soundcard is Creative X-FI Xtrememusic.
Edit: Just got it to work, seems to be a slight problem with teamspeak.Message Edited by Nitrius on 03-7-200702:44 PM

I dunno if you have tried it but in ventrilo if you go into setup you can chage the input device there to What u hear, I have use direct sound box unticked. Personally for me changing the input device in vista doesnt work that well with vent. Im not sure how TS works.Message Edited by Renegade87 on 03-7-200702:23 PM

  • What you hear recording

27" iMac's Cirrus Logic HD Audio doesn't support a recording audio source usually called "Mixed Stereo" or "What you hear".
iMac's list of recording sources only includes SPDIF interface, Mic and Line In.
Why isn't there a Mixed Stereo or similar source. This is a basic feature of all soundcards. Please fix it.

  • (X-Fi Xtremegamer) Recording two streams of audio simultaneously via "What U Hear"

    Hello everybody.
I'm running Windows 7 32bit and have downloaded and installed drivers from creative download page.
Also performed an update. Integrated sound card (realtek high def) is disabled from BIOS. So my system
    detects only X-Fi Xtremegamer.
I want to be able to record music in background and voice/guitar (input from FlexiJack) together.
Currently I have set "Audio Creation Mode" for my sound card and have chosen FlexiJack input to be a microphone.
So the problem is, when I set "What U hear" in windows recording devices as the default recording device, in idea it must record everything together. Audio being played in background and my voice over it from microphone alltogether.
The problem is, once I set "What you hear" as the default recording device, my microphone immediately goes into "currently unavailable" state. If I put mic back as defaul rec dev, it becomes active again. This is very very frustrating.
I know people here are pros who may have very sophisticated setups with all that MIDI controllers, routing etc. And you may tell me "So whats the problem, just set the music play on one channel of Audition for example and record your voice with mic as default recording device on the other one".
Yes it is a valid notice, but there are situations when I really need to record both, background music/sounds along with microphone input sound simultaneously. A good example is online karaoke site(s) who need both sound streams to be recorded simultaneously and in realtime.
Could anybody, please, give me an advise how to correct this problem? I don't want to throw away such a nice piece of hardware just because of this problem

Oh, boy... You have my sympathy with the 'What-U-Hear' thing...recording two audio streams at once (mic etc)...
I just upgraded my home studio system to a Win7 computer...I use SONAR to do my digital/MIDI work...
On my old WinXP machine (a Pentium 4 with 4 gig RAM), I had the luxury of actually being ABLE to record in 'What-U-Hear' mode...
I figured I needed a new soundcard with my new Win7...so I went out and bought the well-recommended M-Audio Audiophile 192 PCI card...
Big mistake...I CAN'T record ANY 'What-U-Hear' streams at all!!...I wanted to tear out the new M-Audio card and plunk my trusty old Audigy 2 back in...but, the problem is not that Creative doesn't have Win7 drivers...it's that the SOFTWARE that came with it is largely useless according to the Creative site.
Funny, I transferred all my files from the old computer (including all the Creative apps) to the new Win7 computer, and guess what? Good old 'WAVE STUDIO' from 2001 - version 4:12:07 - works just fine (WITH the ****ed M-Audio card, too!)...
    However, I STILL can't get the M-Audio 192 to do 'What-U-Hear' recording...!!
I wonder if I DID put the old Audigy in my new Win7 computer...would that most important bit of Creative software that I use all the time (Wave Studio)...work?
    What a minefield!
But about your particular problem...I think it is something to do with memory addressing, that the mic won't work with other audio streams...
There is a program called 'DIGITAL CABLES' available on ZDNET for free download (costs $30 in full version) that is SUPPOSED to get around the 'What-U-Hear' problem...but, I'm afraid to screw everything up...since I use my system regularly to do work for my church choir...
    cheers...

  • Creative X-Fi recorder from "what you hear" and splitting tra

    Hi,
I used to be able to record minutes of music or sound and be able to split this saved file with the splitting option of Smart Recorder. I now have installed a new sound card X-Fi and want to do the same but cannot find where I need to look. Does this new software for X-Fi offer that or not anymore?

I have the software from the CD installed, as I stated earlier, the "What You Hear" option is only missing if you do a CLEAN install of the drivers from the Windows Update. That is?to say if you install the drivers from Microsoft's website with no other X-Fi driver installed on your system.

I checked this three times by doing a clean install from the Windows Update and then installing the other driver from Creative?s website.
All three times I deleted the X-Fi driver from my system, then installed the one directly from the Windows Update. I would check my record settings and could not find the "What You Hear" option.
