What USB drive to use to extend TC?

Hi, I have a first generation Time Capsule with the 500GB hard drive. I would like to plug an external USB hard drive of 500GB or larger into the TC USB port to extend the capacity of the TC. I don't necessarily need to see or access it as a separate drive; if the TC will use it for backups just like the internal drive, that will be fine. Of course I would like to copy files to and fro as well. Is anyone doing this successfully on an OS X 10.6.x system? If so, please tell me what model of USB drive you are using and I'll go buy one right now. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you cannot use an external USB drive to "increase" the overall drive size for Time Machine Backups. You can; however, use either the internal or external drive as TM destinations.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Can an encrypted USB drive be used with the Airport Extreme?

I would like to keep an encrypted USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme (A1354) so that I can use it for a hand archive of documents I might need to reference on the road or conveniently within my home, mainly because it would be handier than having to plug and unplug a USB device into whatever computer I'm using, and would allow my wife to do the same with her computer. I know most internet providers provide a service like this, but I figured why not just do this with my Airport Extreme?
I've read posts from people who have taken encrypted USB volumes generated from their MacBook Pro, and plug that USB device into the Airport Extreme. The Airport recognized the device exists, but it is you can't actually use it as an encrypted volume. This seems like a flaw on the part of Apple if you can't do this, as this device is a much more expensive solution that what most wireless routers provide.
Has anybody figured this one out?

    Doubtful it's going to work.
Does it see the same disk if it's formatted just Journaled (ie, not encrypted)?
The tehnical article isn't entirely clear . . . it just says Mac OS Extended:  AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols
It was last modified June 14, 2011, a couple of weeks before Lion was released with the ability to encrypt drives.
Note that ExFAT is supported on Macs effective with 10.6.5, but not Airport Extremes; there's no reason to think encryption is any different.

  • Best USB Drive to use with Macs?

THere are a ton of USB drives out there and I was just wondering if they are all compatable with macs and what brands/models would you recommend. I've heard that SanDisk is good, but I heard from someone that they don't work on Macs.... any1 have anything to say about this?
    Thanks in advance

By mentioning SanDisk, I think you are referrring to the small, removeable USB flash drives. The ones about the size of a back of Wrigley's gum - right?
If so, just about any of them should work just fine. The U3 software that is bundled with a lot of them will not work with Macs, but that is OK - it's garbage anyway. If you are not going to use it, you might as well disable the software, then delete it by dragging it to the trash and empyting it.
If you are referring to external hard drives, then most any of them should work also. I like to build my own since it is a little less money and I can get the chance to fiddle with something - LOL!
I like the drive enclosures from OWC. My Mercury Elite Pro drive is quiet and very reliable. OWC is local to me and they are great guys to deal with too with excellent pre- and post-sales support.

  • What ODBC driver to use in order access Filemaker Pro from Excel

    Hi
I run Filemaker Pro 11 and Excel on my Mac OSX 10.5.
I want to access my Filemaker database directly from Excel (to use the data in Pivot tables without first having to export the data from Filemaker). What ODBC driver should I use?

Bruce, I have an indexed, 5 Billion record MS-Access Jet (Red) 4.x format database file system (no table linking), 1 table only, each MDB file acting as a partial table, not a database. This database contains 500 x 2-GIG files, each file with 10
million rows - text compression/encryption turned on.  I created this 1 Terabyte file system (empty) using ODBC Administrator which came installed on my Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop (Factory installed, no Service Packs).  I used ODBC/SQL then
to create the tables/indexes within the empty MDB files.   I have a MEMO data type in my table too with text as long as 528 characters.    I have used MIMEbase64 encoding too, so that the data is not humanly readable neither via SQL
nor by opening an MDB file in WordPad.   I do the decoding during SQL processing.
In my FILE DSN, I bumped Threads property to 510 from default 3, so that I could run 510 simultaneous/concurrent SQL processes on my Laptop, to produce reliable report output.
You might consider this little setup, if nothing else works, as long as the PCs have either Windows XP or 7 installed.   MS-Access ODBC driver is already installed for Jt 4.x format, and you can compact/repair the 4.x files using ODBC Administrator,
or get the GUI/commandline utility JetComp.exe to do it, which is freely distributable.
I know this is not likely your answer, but it is a good fall back perhaps for someone.

  • Format a networked USB drive for use with Time Machine?

I have a spare partition on an external USB drive that is attached to a Windows box on my network. Can I format this networked partition with my Mac to act as a volume for Time Machine and will TM work with the new HFS+ partition through the Windows box it is connected to? I can temporarily attach the drive to the Mac if that will help (I guess it would) but will need to return the drive to the Windows machine it normally lives with.

There are some unsupported techniques to do this. They all use the terminal to "hack" the system and you are on your own in doing so.
Since this is beyond the limits of this forum, I suggest searching the net (as I just did) for how to do this.

  • What screw driver is used to unscrew MacBook Pro screws

I just got a new 13" MacBook Pro with all standard parts. I'm a mobile DJ and will eventually need more hard drive space and RAM. I know how to upgrade both and found upgrades for it, but I would like to have the proper tools to do this. I need the tools to remove the back panel, and the screws from the hard drive and need to know what those tools are and the sizes. A link would be very helpful.

They are very reliable. I have used many of their products including memory, hard drives, SSDs, and toolkits. I have no complaints.
As far as memory is concerned, the brand is not very important as an indicator of quality. Most all sources are reliable especially if they are sold as Mac memory. In addition to OWC, I have relied on DataMem for my memory.

  • Issue with HtmlUnit Driver by using oracle extended selenium webdriver

    Hi,
I need to run test case in silent mode i.e. silent playback. Thus, using HTMLUnit Web Driver which is available in oracle extended selenium binaries.
The recorded files works fine with firefox driver but when i converted my code to html unit driver, it failed to find link inside ADFTable of my fusion web application.
Is htmlunit driver which is in oracle extended selenium files compatible with ADF Application???
Is there any other approach for silent playback of ADF Application test cases other than headless and VM.
    Please guide on this issue.

*## After running csscan and csalter*
Did you really run csalter.plb? csalter.plb should not be run before a full-export A-to-B type of migration. On the other hand, if there were convertible data in the database, csalter.plb should have just reported an error and terminate without changing anything.
*## "[Oracle][ODBC]Syntax error or access violation"*
This error does not say much. Why do you think ODBC does no conversion?
The conversion for the ODBC driver is performed by OCI to/from UTF-16 and it is independent of the NLS_LANG character set. If the C++ application is written in the ANSI mode (does not use wide character data types), Microsoft ODBC Manager will convert between the application and the Oracle ODBC driver, between system code page (Cp 1252) and UTF-16.

  • What Hard Drive to use for back up

    Dear all,
I'm using Time Machine on Lion and want to back up my MBPro without having to keep on plugging in my external drive.
I have a BT Home Hub here is the UK as my router etc and was wondering if anyone can recommend a HD that I can plug into this using Ethernet cable.
I know that I can fork out £260 for a Time Capsule but am wondering if there are any other options. I also heard rumors that TC has failed in the past ?
    Cheers as always.

Western Digital 500 GB External (plug in) HD !!!

    @ Steven,
Hello again and as ever I am grateful for you help.
I will do some searching for other options but I guess if Apple intended it to work with Time Capsule then I guess this will be the sensible option.
Thanks again and what a sad day for Apple. A huge loss.

  • What hard drive to use

I am wanting to replace the 120gb stock hard drive in my g5, I have a 500 Hitachi internal and a wd 320 external. I was just wanting some opinions on the best working ( and largest to use) hard drive to run the o.s.
    Thanks

    Good afternoon actech
I would go with a seagate drive . There drives are warranted for 5 years and of very good quality . I my use seagate in all my computers . You can get a 1 terabit drive over at bestbuy for 120.00 dollars . I dont no if your located in the usa . But if you are you may want to buy from them . I had one fail on me and they took it back and gave me a new one . Thats one in a blue moon that will fail on you .
I would go with a seagate or western digital dirve , they are the most and bigger hard drive makers .

  • Can I use same USB drive for Intel and PPC backup?

Hi, I have a USB hdd that was used for TV recording but failed on that so I reformatted it as Mac OS extended journaled with 6 partitions (GUID), and using SuperDuper, cloned Lion from a Macbook Air and Tiger from my eMac into different partitions, with the idea of using it as an extra backup.
Tested the USB drive on Disk Utility verify disk function and it said all 6 partitions appear OK. Can boot the MBA from the USB drive (although slow) but the eMac does not show the disk image on the USB drive as an optional restart item.  I have eMac backed up on a separate Firewire drive but would like to use the USB drive as a second line of defense.
My question is, would I be able to restore from the Tiger dmg on the USB drive, given that it is GUID and not Apple partition scheme. Would I have to reformat it to Apple partition scheme. Also, how would you go about a restore  from the USB drive if the eMac's OS was kaput?

You can't store a clone of an Intel-based Mac and a clone of a PowerPC-based Mac on the same drive.
That's because an Intel-based Mac can start from a GUID partition table, but a PowerPC-based Mac can only start if your USB drive is using Apple Partition Map instead of GUID. In your case, you have to buy another external drive to make a clone of the PowerPC-based Mac or the Intel-based Mac.
To change the partition map of your USB drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility (it's in Applications > Utilities folder), and select your USB drive in the sidebar.
    2. Go to Partition tab, and press "Options" button, where you can choose the partition map you want: GUID, MBR or Apple Partition Map. Note that you won't be able to start an Intel-based Mac from a drive that uses Apple Partition Map

  • USB drive access issues when using Windows Backup Win7Pro

I've run into a similar issue. I'm using an RD1000 USB drive which uses hard drives as removable media.  There's an alert which states "Windows backup  needs a CD/DVD or USB Drive to continue."  It then states I
can continue the backup on the existing media or insert blank media.  By simply selecting Continue the backup will proceed but this interrupts the backup every night so the backup won't automatically run until that challenge is responded too.  I checked
permissions and reloaded the MS windows driver for the drive.  I tried exFat and NTSF formats. Not sure how to force it to automatically proceed.  The backup is only a tenth of the size of the total available drive space. Any
    ideas?
