What uses less ink, plain paper fast draft, or photo paper best.

What uses less ink, plain paper fast draft, or photo paper best.  I'm not looking for quality, just less ink used.  I also used photo paper, then selected plain paper fast draft.  Not great quality, as expected, but still looking to use less ink.  My guess is the plain paper uses more, because it is more porous. My printer is an hp Deskjet 2050.  My operating system is, 64-bit Intel Core I-7-2670 QM.
Thank You for any assistance

The printer will put droplets of ink on the page based on what it detects the media is (for printers with "Automatic" as a paper type) or the specified media in the driver.
If you select plain paper, draft and print on photo paper it would use the same amount of ink as if you put in plain paper.  The results are likely to be very very poor if you do that, for several reasons:
The pigmented black ink is not compatible with photo paper, it will not dry properly.  When photo media is selected the printer will not use the pigmentd black ink even to print text, it will mix color to make black.
It takes much more ink to give proper photo settings on photo paper as compared to plain paper.  Using plain paper draft settings is likely to result in an unusable photo paper page, ruining a $1 sheet of photo paper to save a $0.20 worth of ink - not a good tradeoff.
If you plan to print a lot of photo's you might consider a printer that uses the HP Ink advantage subscription service.  This service is based on pages printed, and they count photo pages the same as plain paper, even though a full page photo may use 10x or more the ink of a plain paper text page.

  • Printer won't print black ink on plain paper but WILL on photo paper.

Suddenly my printer stopped printing black text, main tray.  I put in a new cartridge, clean print heads, cleaned screen, reset the printer, etc., etc. Then I found it WILL print text in black on photo paper in main tray.  It will print colored text, it just WILL NOT print black text on plain paper, I have tried different brands of plain paper.  No difference.  I have tried different quality settings, I have deleted and re-installed the printer, update software, prayed, etc.  Even tried wired and wireless connections. I give up.  Please help.

    Hi @plutolover2011
I'd like to help you be able to print again. I understand your colored cartridges are working, but the black ink is not.  Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart Premium C309a...
If you complete all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if he printer and printhead are out of warranty.  Hot Water Printhead Flush - HP Ink Series Printers with removable Printhead.
I have recommended this solution to others and have seen success, but I can not guarantee this will resolve the issue, it is an end of the line kind of effort. I hope it helps.

Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. Maybe they can offer you a discount on a newer model, or discuss the option of replacing the printhead!  If after all of our efforts the issue remains, I suggest calling HP. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Forums. I hope one of my recommendations resolves the issue.

  • Printing photos from my computer using hp 6520 printer won't pick up photo paper.

I have a new HP 6520.  When I try to print photos from my computer, I get an error message that the paper tray is empty.  It does not pick up the photo paper and print.  Help!!!

    1. My paper tray(s) are propertly loaded, I'm not a novice. 2.  The bottom tray is LOADED properly.  3.  The UPPER PHOTO TRAY is also loaded properly, shiny side down of course, properly filled and pushed forward as far as it can go. (It worked fine an hour ago when I printed a couple of photos). 4. Now no matter what I do, how I specify photo paper size, IT ONLY PRINTS OUT ON REGULAR PAPER FROM THE BOTTOM TRAY (8"X10") ordinary paper!! 5. When I UNLOAD the bottom tray, in an attempt to "fool" the device so that there's is NOTHING BUT photo paper, I get a prompt telling me I must load the paper before it will print the photo!  Of course when I reload the bottom tray with the ordinary paper, it still prints out the photo FROM THE BOTTOM TRAY PAPER!!   I'm wasting ink and paper and I'm not happy. I was on the phone for more than 2 hours two weeks' ago getting the first NEW printer set up and it was decided by all four techs I spoke to that I indeed needed to have a new device. 6.  I received this replacement device just 4 days ago, another couple of hours speaking to India, finally worked ok, even unti earlier this evening but NOW it will NOT use photo paper from the upper tray. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THESE TROUBLESOME HP6520'S?   I had a Photosmart 560 for years until it "died" a few weeks' ago and since then, this is my story with this product. You can check with India tech support to find my complete dealings with them vis-a-vis this product.
AND when I tried to sign up for this support 3 times I got refused telling me that the screen name I offered was already taken. Apparently the app was taking my information from when I may have signed up a couple of years' ago when I had an issue with my Photosmart 560.

  • Using less ink for aperture printing

i need to print photos for temporary use -
i do not need to worry about quality -
i want to use as little printer ink as possible.
i just need a simple image to place them on a layout.
should i resize them and keep them as a version for
    doing this?
and how would i do this?
    deb

There should be a quality setting in the print options for your printer. Depending on the model, the options may be named differently, like "draft" quality, etc. That is not an Aperture option. Those options should appear in a separate dialogue box after you've gone through all the Aperture print options. In the last Print dialogue box, make sure the triangle next to the name of your printer is pointing up to reveal all the printer's options.

  • HP Photosmart B210a will not print black ink on plain paper... only on photo paper.

Hi, I have an HP Photosmart B210a that wont print black ink.  I have used a whole set of ink cartridges by cleaning the print heads, allignment etc.  I just installed ALL NEW cartridges and the sae thing is ocurring. I have replaced plenty of cartridges and am experienced.  Just all of a sudden one day the printer stopped printing black ink on plain paper documents like with MS Word, excel and PDF, etc.  It's not set to greyscale either, actually it wont even print grey!  However, if I go to a photo with plenty of black in it, it will print it JUST FINE!!!  I'm at my wits end! I have followed EVERY head cleaning advice in the forums but it will not print black in except on photos... Please help!!!!

The document here may help, although you have likley already done most of the steps.  Be sure to check the vents.  If the above does not resolve black not printing on your Photosmart b210a the post here may help.
The black cartridge uses pigmented ink which is not compatible with photo paper.  Although the printer appears to be printing black properly on photo paper it is actually using color mixed together to produce black in this case.

  • I need to know what kind of photo paper to use on the HP Photosmart 375.

What are the specifications for photo paper to be used on the Photosmart 375.  HP Advanced Photo Paper is too thick (66 lb) and won't feed through the printer.  HP Premium Photo Paper (64 lb) will feed through the printer but the ink takes at least 2 hours to dry.  HP sold paper in the past for injet printers which worked perfectly: it was the right thickness to feed through the printer and the ink dried instantly.  Canon also sold similar paper, but both HP and Canon have changed the specs on their photo paper so that they no longer are suitable.  So, I need to know what are the proper specs for a Photosmart 375 and where can I buy it.  Shouldn't HP provide a suitable paper for its Photosmart 375 printer, as it did in the past?

I have had good results with HP Premium Plus Glossy photo paper.  The Office Depot Brilliant Gloss Professional Photo Paper also works well for me.
In both the cases above I notice the packages have changed since I bought the paper, I do not know if this is still the same paper formulation I have.
For instant drying the HP Advanced Photo paper should be a good choice.  You may need to clean the paper rollers if it does not feed properly.  You can do this by gently releasing the catch on the right side (looking from the front, but the catch is on the back panel).  This will allow the panel to lie flat exposing the rollers.  These can be cleaned with a damp q-tip, remove any buildup on the rollers.

  • Why do I not have access to all the features of my Canon MG5320 printer in all applications which use a printer? The printer has two paper paths. The rear path is used for photo paper and other specialty papers. this is only one "unavailable".

I have an iMac late 2012 with OSX 10.8.
The MG5320 has two paper feed paths; one at the rear for photo paper, brochure paper, and other specialty papers and a tray for regular 8½x11 paper. It also can print on CDs and DVDs and has an automatic duplexer. Canon provides a utility for printing on the CDs and DVDs and also for printing photos and other specialty items. This is available in Mac format also. I installed the most recent drivers and utilities.
I also have a HP IBM Compatible computer on which the above printer as well as an Epson are installed. Every option of each printer is available in every software application that has need for a printer.
The Mac printer dialog varies from one application to another. The only applications that list the option for selecting paper quality which includes photo paper are Office for Mac, Pages, and Numbers. Not likely that I would be using any of these for photo printing. Auto duplexing, however, is not available here or in any other applications.
The print dialog in Aperture, Photoshop Elements for Mac, ACDSee for Mac, or iPhoto provide the choice of numerous sizes of paper but no option for paper quality. Therefore, I attempted to use the print utility supplied by Canon and updated by Apple for printing some photos. The photos are selected in this utility. When the print command was given I was shown a message that the printer was being reset. It then began printing a spreadsheet, which was not even open, from the front tray on regular paper in fast draft quality.
It is essential that the rear feed be available for printing photos. The printer will not accept photo paper from the front tray. The greater proportion of my printing is photos or other specialty items all of which use paper that must be fed from the rear feed.
An acquaintence who considers himself to be somewhat of a Mac expert insists that the printer options that I require are available and all I need to do is look for them. The print dialog should be clear enough that "looking for options" is not a necessity. Even so, I have dilligently searched every variation of the Mac print dialog on my iMac and only the office type applications named above included anything other than the basic printer functions.
I have also searched numerous locations online without finding a solution. I did, however, find that printing and printing problems seem to be common with several versions of the Mac OS and Mac computers in general.
I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with a solution. I have no desire to upgrade my Windows OS to Windows 8 which is perhaps suitable for "smart" phones but not desktop computers. However, because of the printing issue I have temporarily put my iMac aside and reverted to using my PC with Windows Vista.

  • Massive ink pooling on photo paper HP B9180

This started yesterday, suddenly after I had not printed for a few days.  It prints documents fine.  But photos, on difft papers are little pools of very green tinged ink, so that if you tilt the paper it runs.  If you hold it level it will sit there and dry . . . in a few days.
I've turned off the printer, the computer, etc.
I found one post in 2008 on another forum reporting teh same problem but no answers.
    Help if you can!

You are probably using photo paper that is not compatible with your printer.  Also check the paper type settings in the print driver.

  • Why are the whites in my graphic printing out as a tainted brown yellow both on regular & photo pape

    Hi,
I just aquired a couple HP photosmart printers. One is a C4480 the other a C4580 all in one printer.
I have just put new inks in both of them and ran the test page and the following alignment calibration with no discernable issues.
I ran a test print page as well as cleaning the print heads. Everything looks accurate and vivid.
Now when I print a graphic that I made either on regular paper or HP Advanced Photo paper the whole thing comes out with a hazy yellow brown that is very noticable especially where it should be white. It looks like they were dipped in dirty dishwater on lasagna night.
Has anyone else had this color muddling problem and if so was there a solution to it? If I take the same graphic to the local copy store it prints crisp blacks and whites with no yellow staining. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why are banded lines more prominent on photo paper?

My HP 1350 is pretty good for an inexpensive printer, but it does produce banded lines when there's a lot of black or anything like that. For that reason, I haven't experimented much with printing on photo paper. But I just now tried again, doing a regular paper test, then a photo paper version. The bands/lines showed up much more prominently on the photo paper. Any fixes for this (besides buying a better printer)?
    Thanks very much --
    Christine

There are a couple of things that can affect print quality.
If you are just doing everyday printing, chances are it will just be a copy, fair at best.
If on the other hand you want a pristine copy the best you can get.
You will have better luck with a Photo Program like the older Photo Deluxe for OS 9 or Classic, and the newer Photoshop or CS all are Adobe and will allow you to reformat to TIFF Format that is historically the best format to use for the highest quality.
If you are working with a JPG photo or picture that you can't enhance the resolution from the raw work you will only be able to use the printer Preferences.
It appears that each new printer that HP comes out with they change this function just a little.
Go to FILE and click print, then a Box will open and under the General tab it will give you your Paper options choose your paper, then you should have 4 additional options of Draft, Normal, Best, and High Res.
These can vary as I mentioned earlier depending on your printer but they are there.
So if you choose the best or High Res option you are only going to get whatever the quality of the Original is unless you enhance it and or change formats.
Normal JPG's that are used on most web sites and you see are rarely any better than 144dpi the higher the dpi the larger the file and the better the quality.
I try to use 300 dpi on everything, this way I know you get what you see.
The downside to this is the very large size of the file. Most people don't want to use up there space by saving large files, So, it depends on what you are doing and for what purpose will determine the finished quality.
    Hope this helps..Don

  • Will the Officejet 7000 handle 10 mil glossy photo paper, can it pull that thickness through it?

I had an older DesignJet 1220c that would not feed the 10 mil photopaper through it, I had to manually feed it from a paper slot in the back.
