What version least buggy 5.0 through 6.0.1?

I need info on old versions of itunes 5.0 through 6.0.1. Are versions 5.0, 6.0 for Mac stable and non-buggy? Is the low volume prolem I ran into in 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 present in 6.0.1? I found 5.0 online but can't find any other version 5 for Mac.
I'm satisfied with itunes 4.9 but may be forced to update itunes to 5.0 to use a replacement Shuffle (despite the specs saying 4.7.1 is the minimum).
My philosophy on updating software is if it ain't broke don't fix it. So... I stayed at 4.7.1 until my podcatcher stopped being developed. Now I'm at 4.9. I don't want to update itunes (or for that matter my OS or QT). It may end up either update or don't buy the new ipod.
I miss the days when Apple cared about backwards compatibility. Advice on the oldest stable version will be great!

hi Marlinspike!
Everything I've read implies problems with iTunes 5 was on the Windoze version. Next time I have to reformat my hard disk I'll maybe install 5 experimentally to see.
go for 5.0.1.4 over 5.0.0.35. in amongst the "undocumented" problems for a small number of folks with 5.0.0.35 was an issue where downloading certain podcasts could corrupt your library files. (that was on both PCs and Windows.)
similarly, go for at least a 6.0.1.3 rather than a 6.0.0.18. the most common version of the -208 error could hit Macs as well as PCs:
iTunes 6: -208 Error message when playing iTunes Music Store content
(sorry i don't have much more info than that for you ... i spent most of those days "trapped" in "Installing & Upgrading iTunes for Windows", and my links with outside fora were sketchy to say the least ...)
love, b

  • What versions should I DOWNgrade to?

So I see that Apple decided, with the new version of OS X and iTunes that I installed, that note files can't be simply copied to the iPod anymore, the way they used to. Instead, you have to have an internet connection on your Mac and go through the Mail program.
I'm kind of a Luddite. I don't let the internet touch my personal computer at all. My only net connection is through public computers and a USB thumbdrive. And since I loathe cell phones and refuse to own one, I need note files on my iPod for all sorts of handy reference.
The only solution I can see is to go back to an older version of iTunes and perhaps the iPod driver. Can anyone (who KNOWS what they're talking about) please tell me what versions of that software I should download?

    OK, here's why you shouldn't edit at 24 (=23.98).
You can change the 30fps footage to 29.97 by simply conforming the frame rate of the clip, as others have pointed out--in other words, slowing it down by .1%. Each frame will remain exactly as it was recorded, it will just be played for 1/29.97 of a second instead of 1/30.
As others have pointed out, this will require you to slow down any synched audio by .1% as well. But there will be no quality hit to your footage. Yes, it will have to be compressed to ProRes, but that's it.
However, if you use Compressor to change the frame rate to 23.98, it can't simply drop one out of every five frames, and it can't just play each frame for 1/23.98 of a second, because that will be noticeable. It will have to invent frames that don't currently exist, and this will involve a significant quality hit. Things may look soft; the motion may look funky.
I guess what I'm saying is that, let's be honest, doing a film transfer from 30p is not going to look good. Doing a film transfer from video is already a big quality hit, and changing the frame rate is going to make that worse. If you really wanted to keep 35mm as a viable option, you should have shot film or at least an HD format that allows for 24p.
That's not to say you don't have lots of distribution options. But you shouldn't compromise the quality of your 30p master, which could be used for TV or DVD distribution, in favor of a potential 35mm transfer that (a) probably won't happen and (b) will not look good if it does.

  • What version of iMovie will work?

None of the five of us here have ever used/needed iMovie, but it exists on all the computers except one, and I have never purposely installed it. Where did it originally come from??? (I know it is now part of iLife.)
One older computer has version 3.0.3, and a couple of newer ones have the HD version that carries a version number 6.0.3 (which I find when I get info). My guess on the one that doesn't have it, if there was a choice during some install, it probably wasn't installed because it was not needed and to save space.
My problem is, it is now needed on this G4 dual 867, and I don't know which version to try (that I can get my hands on), that will work on this old of computer running OS 10.5.8. I downloaded and installed a version 3.0.3, but it crashes. (Won't work with 10.5.8??) It seems version 6 cannot be downloaded. Would version 8 work? (I'm also not sure if the version 8s I'm finding in downloads are full or just updates to an iLife version.)
Someone that knows some "history" on iMovie, and what version might work, please help!!!
    Thanks!
    Ginny

The computer in question is a 2002 computer, so I guess it didn't come with iLife components.
Correct. (Although it might have come with iMovie 2.)
Wouldn't OS updates have included these, though?
No. The OS and iLife are two different things.
This computer came with Jaguar, and has been updated to Panther
iMovie 3 was, I beleive, included with Panther. But iMovie 3 is buggy.
I assume iMovie 6 would have likely come with Tiger?
    No, see above.
I guess it might be illegal to just copy the iMovie HD application on my computer over to this one?
It would at least violate the Software Licence Agreement. That may or may not be illegal, depending on the laws in your country.
Looks like the ver 6 is the best one for this G4 dual 867 running Leopard.
Correct. Find a used iLife '06 on eBay (for instance).

  • What versions of Jabber customers are using?

Is there a way in CUCM 9.1.2.11900-12 or IM&P 9.1.1.31900-1 to show what version of the jabber client customers are using? Export that info maybe?  I remember in v8.6 you could get that information.  How would I do that in v9.1?
    Thanks!

Quark XPress 8 will mostly work in Lion and later. That version still has a few parts of it as PowerPC code, but are also functions most people don't use. For full compatibility (all Intel code), you should use at least version 9.
Illustrator CS3 and forward should work. Adobe lists Lion and forward as compatible with the CC version.
According to Lexmark's site, your printer is compatible all the way through Yosemite. Though it also says for Snow Leopard, 10.6.x and newer, you get the drivers through Software Update in OS X rather than from their site.

  • What version of Flash Player should I use with my Power PC based Mac?

I did the following (see below from a Recent Forum) - and even got a sucessful INSTALLED, but when I go to YouTube....I can not get anything and I am asked to update FLASH.....thoughts?
What version of Flash Player should I use with my Power PC based Mac?
Please follow these instructions for installing the most recent version of Flash Player that supports PowerPC based Macs
    1. Follow the instructions for uninstalling Flash Player on the Mac: Uninstall Flash Player
    2. Download and extract the Flash Player 10.1.102.64 zip file
    3. Navigate into the folder "/Flash Player 10.1.102.64/10_1r102_64/"
    4. Mount the file "flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg" by double clicking
    5. Install using the normal procedure

I was finally able to successfully installed FP on my Mac OS 10.5.8 using the last trick shown below by Chris (Adobe Flash Player.pkg file). This, only after several (at least 10) attempts, and only after restarting my computer after downloading the install file. Thanks for the helpful post.

  • How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive?

How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive without starting that drive
and seeing the system profiler? In fact, because the drive wont start up, Now I am wondering if it is pre-intel. ? CMD-I doesn't do it. Thanks

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.

  • WRE54G - Computer IP replaces Expander IP -- WPC - What Version?

I got a WRE54G V.3 last week and have been trying to connect it to a 2WIRE (2701HG-B) router since then. I thought I got it working the other night but have discovered a problem since then. When I try to use 2 computers at once with the range expander only one will work. After a little investigation, I noticed that the IP address for the expander that shows up on the 'device list' of the router is the IP address of the computer that is connected through the expander. The 'device list' says that the IP address for the computer is 'not set'. The router also does not see the name of the expander. Instead of showing the name I assigned it, it says 'unknown' followed by the expanders MAC address. I did uploaded the latest Firmware, so that’s not the problem. Its like the router doesn't know the expander is there and that the expander is acting like a high powered antenna connected to only one active computer. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Also, when I originally used the 'setup disk' for the WRE it messed up all of my connection configurations which made me have to reinstall both my wireless and Ethernet adapter drivers. I have a WPC54G wireless adapter for my laptop but it doesn't say specifically what version it is. The FCC ID is PKW-WPC54G-2 so I guessed that it is a version 2 and reinstalled the latest drivers offered for version 2. Was I correct in assuming that the card is a version 2? The new driver I installed came with a Linksys utility to find networks but its not working and I prefer to use the Windows wireless configuration utility. To use the windows utility I check the box on the properties page for the wireless connection but it will switch back to the Linksys utility and stop working by itself. Is there anyway to use the driver but use the Windows utility as your default? To summarize: 1. How do I fix the IP problems for the WRE54G? 2. Is my WPC54G version 2? 3. Can I set the 'Windows Wireless Network Configuration Utility' as my default utility with the new WPC54G Driver (6.0.0.18 8/26/2004), or do I have to use the Linksys utility?

Answer 1 : Really not quite sure about this ....
Answer 2 : turn the card upside down and check the model number .. the model number would be WPC54G and if there v2/v3/v4 after it it means that the card is version 1 ....
Answer 3: As you windows xp , go to start >> programs >> uninstall wireless notebook adapter.... insert the CD for the adapter ...take the card out and insert it back again.... follow the instructions on the found new hardware wizard ... this will install the drivers for the adapter and then you can use the windows wireless configuration utility to connect to the wireless network ....

It's 1.0.1 in 5.1, but it's definitely not 1.0.1 (as your web page link
pointed to) in 4.5.1 or 4.5.2
    btw,it was FAME.
Is theer any harm to replace that interface class?

I have a problem with another vendor also include the
    javax.transaction
    package in their jar file.
When compiling, the one included in the weblogicaux.jar is picked upand
    our
extension to this thrid pary product fails because the UserTransaction
method signatures are different in weblogicaux.jar than the one thisthirty
    party expects.
I check the online doc in JDC and looks like our third party tool
    looks
    for
the correct signature for the JTA 1.0.1 --
while weblogic has an older(?) version of API?
    Here is the error:
    MySessionBean.java:0: The method void setTransactionTimeout(int)
    declared in class
    com.fame.timeiq.persistence.Connection cannot override the method
    of
    the
    same signature declared in interface
    javax.transaction.UserTransaction. Their throws clauses are
    incompatible.
    My question is:
    1. to work around the problem, we put the third party jar file infront
    of
the weblogic classes. Are there issues I should watch out for?
    2. What version of JTA is included in weblogic 4.5.1?
    3. Checking weblogicaux.jar, it includes both
    javax.jts.UserTransaction
    and
javax.transaction.UserTransaction. Where is the latter used?

The program then cycles through a list of the new pdf files and sends them to a network printer. I have Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0 on my pc and the program runs great but when I try to run it on another pc with Abode 6.0 I get the following error message.

    Leonard,
Thanks for getting back to me. I do have Adobe Acrobat 6.0, Acrobat Distiller 6.0, Adobe Reader 6.0 and Adobe Reader 9.0 on the pc. Should Acrobat version 6.0 run AcroPDDoc?

Hi, I have been trying to update many things on my 2009 white macbook. Everytime I do it tells me I need a different version. I don't know what versions I need or even where to begin or if I need to purchase new hardware? It says my version is 10.5.8. I have tried downloading 10.6 but not sure what to do. Everyone else seems to be updating there's and mine is way behind however it still tells me I have no software updates...Any suggestions?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was based on Power PC code and was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
