What version of OSX on IMac G5?

Hi, my dad has a second user iMac which is currently running OSX version 10.5.8.
Due to updates, his e-mail account and browser seem to want to have a newer version of OSX and (being a non Mac user) I'm wondering what later versions would run on his iMac.
According to what I found, it's a PowerMac 8,1 with 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 (3.0) processor and bus speed of 600 MHz, and boot version 5.2.2f2.
I assume the most modern versions of OSX will not run on such an old machine so there must be a cut off point where a more modern version will still work.  I'd appreciated advice on what that might be please.
Many thanks

Would the more recents os versions increase the overall performance? Is it worth it?

    Hello!
Snow Leopard is what i am currently using. But i guess it does need some clean up and maybe a clean install to see if it gets faster.
I believe 4gb is the limit for this model, although i've seen some with 6gb…

How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive without starting that drive
and seeing the system profiler? In fact, because the drive wont start up, Now I am wondering if it is pre-intel. ? CMD-I doesn't do it. Thanks

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.

  • What version of OSX disks do I need

I am looking to upgrade my iMac to 10.4 to bring it in line with my other machines. I have seen a set of disks on ebay for a mac will these work on a G5 iMac? They look dark grey on the image and the specs are below.
    MAC OS X Version: 10.4.8
    Disc Version 1.0
    AHT version 3A118
    Part Numbers:
    CD1: 2Z691-5967-A
    CD2: 2Z691-5930-A

    Hi-
The discs that you describe are machine specific, and are in no way appropriate for the G5 iMac. The earliest versions shipped with Panther, 10.3.5, the iSight model with Tiger 10.4. Late 2006 and mid 2007 models were finally up to 10.4.7.
To move up to Tiger, you will need to find a retail install disc, which is black with a silver X.

Not to be difficult but you do realize this is being asked and discussed today in multiple threads, and for the last... 23 months too.

  • What version of windows is best to run on an Early 2008 IMac?

What version of Windows is best to run on an Early 2008 IMac? And should I use Boot Camp, Parallels, or VMWare? My IMac will be a secondary computer now that I got a new IMac. The Early 2008 IMac is an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory, and 2.66 ghz processor speed. It is also running OSX 10.9.5 and Boot Camp is version 5.1.2.
I mostly want to do this so I can get rid of an old Windows machine that I just use to run Quicken on. I think I need to do this since Intuit does not support online bill pay for Apple versions of Quicken.
I am average with computers so any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks

Bootcamp gives you access to underlying hardware on the iMac unlike VMware or Parallels. It does require reboot. Most VM engines let you take a Bootcamp Windows and run it as VM where a reboot can be avoided. With 2GB of memory, you should be able to Windows 7, but I would not recommend W8.

  • Possible to run different versions of OSX on same internal HD in iMac?

    Hi All,
I am a Pro Tools user, and Pro Tools is usually many weeks/months behind in supporting the latest builds of OSX. So while the rest of my computing needs would benefit from immediate upgrade when the newest OSX build is out (i.e. better network performance, security enhancements, etc.) I'm often warned by Digidesign not to upgrade until they've certified Pro Tools works with the newest build.
So I want to buy an iMac with a large hard drive, and I'm wondering if this is possible: can I partition that hard drive and run 2 versions of OSX on it? Initially they'll be the same build (10.5.5 or .6 whichever it comes with) but on one partition will be all of my programs minus Pro Tools, the other one will only have Pro Tools. I'll upgrade one partition regularly to the newest version, but keep the other partition to the last approved OSX build by Digidesign.
Is such a thing possible? How would I choose to boot from the other partition, by holding ALT at startup just like I do when I want to boot from an external firewire HD? Would I have to buy a second license of OSX?
    Thanks!

A new mac, that came with leopard won't be able to boot to 10.4.11. You will be able to view the files on the external, but many programs when opened, e.g. address book, will say that they are not supported on this architecture.

If this is a separate partition that has an install of OS 9, you will not be able to boot from it. Again, you will be able to view files and even fewer (if any) files will be supported. If you have used an app like monoligual to remove old architecture support then you definitely won't be able to run the apps.
I have little experience with OS 9.
If OS 9 is not on a separate partition then I am not quite sure what you mean.

My MacBook purchased in May 2009 has OSX version 10.5.8  What version should I purchase to upgrade?

    Start with Snow Leopard:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

I have a new iMac and would like to buy a cheap legal version of Photoshop to create a simple flyer.  If I look on ebay or similar, what version do I require?
I understand that Photoshop 5 is not compatible?
I used to use CS5 at work which was very good, doing a little reserach it appears as if this suite has been replaced by a monthly 'cloud' charge which for me as a basic home user is unnecessary.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hello Simonlala;
Anyone that buys an iMac should not have to buy "cheap".  it's like putting "retread tires" on a brand new Farrari! Ugh!
To find a cheap version of PS is to locate an obsolete version only?  Software surplus business may have some or check the obituary columns to see if any Photographers or Gaphic Designers have left some things behind?
Some options...enroll in a community college Multimedia class and you will not only have access to Photoshop, you'll have access to much more software for the price of the course.  It will also qualify you as a student and you can get a discounted rate on the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription as well.
If you are only making "simple flyers" would not MS Word or OpenOffice software do the job for you?  There are applications for that purpose and Photoshop is not the only way to skin this cat!  Or you can always buy a box of Crayola's and make a pamphlet that way?
And as a bonus, you may learn something from the course you enroll in.
I am a student and subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud...it's reasonable for my purposes for now.

my iPhoto icon has a cross over it, when i open it, it You have “iPhoto” 9.2.1. you can't use this with this version of OSX? it used to work ?what's gone wrong?

iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back.

Detail.  I Attach my camera and the fields where the photos usually show up are empty and at the top of the screen it says all photos from camera are downloaded. But they are not. They can't be.
I fixed the problem somewhat myself by removing the miniSD and manually inserting it. It did not populate automatically. I had to open iPhoto and then it populated only the most recent photos I had taken which fortunately were the only ones I need. No error messages this seems to be a new occurrence.
Is there a way to just turn iPhoto off and download my photos to the folder of my own choosing?

Sure - in the iPhoto prefercences set action when a camera is ocnnected to Image Capture

It is not possible to install OS X 10.7.2 on a Mac with a G5 processor.
In order for 10.7.2 to be installed you must have an Intel processor and not a PowerPC which G5 is. Please straighten out your information.
Also the version of iPhoto you are attempt to run would be helpful.
