What video adapter to use?

On this forum I see reference to various connectors and adapters to use in hooking the MacBook Aluminum to an external monitor. When I purchased my new monitor, I also ordered a "Mini-DVI to DVI" adapter, thinking this would be the right one. WRONG. There is no guidance that I can find on which of the ever changing port configurations is correct today.
If not "Mini-DVI" then what is the correct name of this even smaller port used on the MacBook Aluminum?

I believe this adapter (Mini DisplayPort to DVI) is for connecting to a digital monitor - not an actual TV.
I'm having the same problem - that is, I've been searching for an adapter to connect my new MacBook (Aluminum) to a TV for movies, etc. I also ordered the Mini DVI to Video adapter, only to find that it was made for the original MacBook and will not work with the Aluminum - the port is the wrong size.
The support technician informed me that there was no cord to connect the new MacBook to a TV ... yet. Is this true? I find it somewhat hard to believe that Apple would release this computer and not have an adapter available. Anyone know of any third-party adapters that work?

  • What Video Settings to use in Premiere before adding to Presenter

I am editing several videos in Adobe Premiere and will then add them to a presentation with Adobe Presenter.  What video settings do you suggest (frame size, codec, container, frame rate, etc.) for use with Presenter.
    thanks!

good call, turns out it's not exporting at 500x375 like I tell it to. Instead, it exports to 640x480. The .fla document size is 500x375... yet when I go to quicktime export settings, it says 550x400. And when it finishes export, it's 640x480. huh??
well, I guess I can make my premiere project 640x480, not going to matter much when the final product is 320x240. I just can't figure out why it insists on exporting to 640x480

And where i can read information about all components of hardware for this notebook.

For each clip you can go to the audio portion of inspector and uncheck/disable the tracks you don't desire. That would take longer than Tom's method, but I think the audio won't show up as a blank later on.

  • Will the Apple mini DVI to video adapter work with a macbook? What to Buy?

I went to my local Apple Reseller and asked for a mini dvi to video adapter to use to connect my macbook to a tv using either s-video or the yellow RCA cable. I was told that they only had the one that was for an ibook and Power book and that this would not work with a Macbook. I would need a different one. Is this correct. If so, what do I need? I have looked on the online Apple Store and cannot find anything that fits this description. They only list one type of Mini DVI to tv adapter? I just want to be able to connect my Macbook to a TV.

As it happens, I just bought the mini-DVI to video connector for my wife's Macbook (C2D) yesterday. I am in Australia (which is a PAL country), but I didn't see anything on the device or the packaging which indicated it as being PAL-specific. In fact, in Display Preferences when it is connected to the Mac and TV and in use, the panel relating to the TV output (which is shown by the Mac on the TV screen) is where you select between PAL-50Hz and NTSC-60Hz, so I'd guess it is a single worldwide device, rather than their being separately-manufactured PAL and NTSC variants of the connector.
Anyway, on the back of the top cardboard part of the packaging is a picture of the connectors (because you cannot really see the pins in the Mini-DVI connector itself when packaged, due to an opaque plastic "keeper" over the end of the plug).
To reconfirm what is said above, the pin configuration on the mini-DVI port on the MacBook and what you need on the Mini-DVI connector is a horseshoe or "U" shape. I don't remember if any specific model of Mac is listed, but I believe as long as it is that U-shaped connector you'll be fine with the same connector kit.
The "mini-VGA to video" connector is not what you want for a MacBook; mini-VGA is not "U"-shaped inside, but rather two rows of pins in "II" configuration (even though the outside dimensions of mini-VGA and mini-DVI look very similar).

I'm getting a new adapter for my ipod touch 5th generation 16gb, and I don't know what wattage adapter to use with it and what not to use

Do you mean a wall charger?
The min is 500 mA (1/2 amp) (2.5 watts) at about 5 volts DC. Most are 1000 mA (5 watts) or higher and those are acceptable. I use a iPad charger that puts out 2.4 amps (12 watts)

  • Mini VGA to Video Adapter ???????

hi - the screen on my old emac is gone (just a vertical line in the center of the screen). i got a new emac (used). i want to transfer the files from the old one to the new one. i need to hook it up to another monitor in order to navigate the system to allow for file sharing. i want to use the "Mini VGA to Video Adapter" and use the composite video connection to hook up to a television set as this seems the cheapest and easiest route on this but many of the listings on the net say that an emac with airport extreme is required. i don't know if my old emac has airport extreme installed. i don't understand why i would need airport extreme if i only need the rca jack connection. does anybody know if this will work without airport extreme ? the old emac is a 700mhz / g4 / 40g / 1g ram - thanks, beaner

seems that i have found the answer to this myself. finally found the actual apple page for this (see link at end of message) and 2 of the reviews for the part say that this adapter will not work on my circa 2002 700mhz emac but works on later ones.

  • Apple video adapter

if i buy an apple video adapter to use a tv as a display will I be able to have the ibook closed and still view it onthe tv?

No. Closing the iBook puts it to sleep.
You can, however, almost close it, leaving it open just enough to keep the sleep switch from activating.
Heat is dissipated through the keyboard, so you should never run it while it is closed (if a malfunction should allow it to run that way).

  • Display problems using mini-dvi to video adapter

I recently purchased the mini-dvi to video adapter for my powerbook to use my TV as a monitor and to play pictures and videos from the laptop to the TV. I am getting a full color display on the TV, but it's only the screen saver. None of my files, text, or any other desktop folders or menus appear when I open them up on the laptop. The only screen that opens is the display preferences when I open that up, but it's a different set of preferences than what's in my computer's display preferences, as it's header is "NTSC/PAL". But other than that 1 menu, nothing is appearing but the screen saver.

OK, I discovered that I didn't know what I was doing. With the Mini-DVI to video adapter, you need to use an S-Video cable that plugs into an S-video jack on the TV, and then you need a separate cable to plug into the audio out jack on the MacBook to plug into the TV.
I think you could also use an S-video to RCA component cable if you have a TV with component video input, but I couldn't get that to work so I went to the s-video to s-video cable.

  • I am attempting to plug my mac into my tv. I am using the mini dvi to s video adapter. When I plug it in, the display goes all wonky and becomes stretched and enlarged.

When I attempt to connect my mac to the monitor using a mini dvi to s video adapter the display becomes enlarged and stretched. I cannot seem to fix this using the system preferences or the quick keys that allow you to zoom in on the display. Any suggestions?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • Trouble Using Apple's Video Adapter

I am having trouble getting my eMac to work with the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter. There are no directions telling you how to use it or to even get it to work. I want to use it to import videos from my Sony Hi8 camcorder and was told by Apple's Live help that this is what I needed to import video and make DVDs. How do I get this adapter to work?

    Welcome aboard.
I think the adapter you have is for video output, not input. To input video to the eMac you need a firewire connection. Sony cameras typically have a 4 wire connector which is smaller than the 6 wire plug on the mac, so you need a cable that has a 4 wire connector on one end and a 6 wire connector on the other. Cameras often (but not always) come with such a cable. You also need a digital camcorder- not just Hi8., although Sony does make cameras that will do both. If you camera does not have digital output, you need a convertor box.

  • Ok...DVI to Video Adapter will almost never work on MAC PRO, what the....

    ok
Thank you apple for making us all by the grand Mac Pro and upgrade to better video cards (like in my case 8800gt) and then offering no solution to replace the DVi to Video adapter which allows to have video mirroring.
Anyone has any idea how to make extended desktop or video mirroring work since this adapter is no longer compatible?
    Thank you

Yes I know that. my question is regarding what to use for a 8800 card

  • Using DVI to Video/ S-video Adapter

I have been trying to use my DVI to Video/S-video adapter with my Daewoo Flat Screen (not flat panal) TV. I have tried every resolution and still everything is small and Fuzzy and it is extremely hard to make out anything. Im wanting to use that adapter to play my game. I am connecting using a S-Video Cable. Please any help. It is a regular Television set NOT LCD or Plasma or any kinda of flat panal just has a flat screen.
    Thanks.
    SaL

Not necessarily. It will depend on what eventually solves the problem. I think you still have a couple of choices to try:
    1. Download (& purchase) a copy of DisplayConfigX. This utility will allow you to "manually" set resolutions that your mini can provide, basically "overridding" what the mini thinks is connected to it. (ref: http://www.3dexpress.de/)
    2. Replace the DVI-to-S-Video adapter to rule out the adapter being the problem. (You may want to try this first.)

  • What s-video cable for a DVI to S-Video adapter

    Hi,
I have an old MiniG4 lying around, which I thought I'd make into a media centre.
I bought the Apple DVI to Video Adapter (<http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A>) which is specifically for a Mac Mini and I thought that I had an s-video cable too, but clearly I have the wrong one.
The cable I have, has a single plug at one end and the red/white/yellow plugs at the other end. The single plug is a headphone-jack style, but with 3 yellow connector 'stripes' instead of the usual 2 black ones, but this plug doesn't fit in the DVI Adapter's yellow socket. It's too wide.
Can anyone tell me what cable I need to work with the DVI Adapter? Should it be 2 plugs to 3, or 1 plug to 3? (I'm in Europe, if that changes anything)
(Why don't Apple tell you what you need on the product page at the Apple store???)

    Thanks for the replies.
I found the correct cables ... really dumb that Apple sell adapters but doesn't tell you what is required for them to work.
Anyway, it works really well. I was surprised at how good the output is. Just like the original DVD. The only place I can see any artefacts is on a totally black screen. Should it be of interest to anyone else reading, I used Handbrake on preset AppleTV but with FFMPEG instead of H624 (which took incredibly long to encode) and choosing to maintain aspect ratio and 100% quality.
I'm also using the iPhone to control via Apple's 'Remote' iPhone app and I bought 'Rowmote' as well, which gives more control.
The G4 Mini is the 'stealth' version, the last one they made with a slightly faster processor and a more capable video card. It's adequately powerful for running the movies and acting a media hub.
All in all, I'm quite happy.

  • Video out after using Apple Video adapter.

Hi, I have an Mac G5 17" iSight and after I mirror'd my screen to my TV using an Apple video adapter (something I've done hundreds of times before) the computer screen wouldn't change back to the general screen resolution (also something it used to do before). After restarting my computer in an atempt to fix the problem the video was all black (nothing at all, i.e no faint glow) but the computer started up correctly and I could interact with it and control it thru remote access from another mac.
Restarting the PRAM did'nt change anything.
But then after reseting the SMU the computer got worse! Now it just powers up and after som or se time the fans start working real hard but nothing else happens. I don't want to keep them running for more than half a minute because I'm afraid the logic board will burn up if it hasn't already.
What could have happend? Is it fixable?
    Please help....

I answered my own question (this is my post after finding the answer in another thread). Hope this helps someone.
Woohoo! Thanks for the post- I have a 5G with the Apple A/V cable, but I couldn't get the video to work, just the audio on the tv. I didn't have "TV Output" selected "On." Now I don't have to return the product. Man, this 5G is amazing.
