What video cable to buy to watch tv on old tube tv and mac pro

I have a MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA video card but I read that the DVI to s-video only works with the ATI video card. So what do I buy? My specs are below..
GeForce 8600M GT:
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 128 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3175

actually I read 2 reviews for the dvi to video adapter. One said it worked with the GeForce 8600M GT NVIDIA and one that said it did not work???
Does anyone know the "real" answer?
With graphics cards, the rule has been that DVI to video adapters don't work with NVIDIA graphics cards, but the developer note says they do work with Macs with built-in NVIDIA graphics

The Apple adapter does say it will work with the MacBook Pro

Non-Apple adapters may not work,though.

I need to update my macbook but I need to know what software program to buy to update it. I am operating on Mac OSX 10.5.8. I want to be up to date on all software updates at the end.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and once done, if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

You can't buy more storage on an iPad. You are referring to space on iCloud and that probably won't accomplish what you are trying to do.

  • What is the difference between iMac and Mac pro?

I want to buy an iMac but have saw the mac pro.  What is the difference?  Do you need an iMac to get a mac pro or does it come with a monitor?

Yes, exactly as Kappy has stated.
The iMac is an "all-in-one" computer similar to an HP Envy, or HP Touchsmart.
    HP Envy Here: http://tinyurl.com/bb-hp-envy
    HP Touchsmart Here: http://tinyurl.com/bb-hp-touchsmart
These are an "all-in-one" machine, where the CPU (central processing unit), mainboard, and graphics display adapter are all embedded onto one board, and it is built-in to the monitor display case.
So you just have what looks like a "thicker" monitor on your desk and your keyboard connects to this "all-in-one" computer.  (and actually the newest 2012 iMacs are not really that "thick" at all, and it does look pretty nice/thin/sleek).
The disadvantage to an "all-in-one" is that it's not easily upgradeable.  You can't change out the graphics cards, or install new PCIe expansion cards (faster network cards, RAID adapter, etc.), can't add extra internal hard drives (i.e. 4 internal hard drives), etc.
The Mac Pro is a standalone computer.  It requires an additional monitor/display.  The advantage of having a Mac Pro is that it is upgradeable (you can get more powerful graphics cards in the future if you need better 3D rendering power) and it has far more memory slots, so it can be expandeable to I believe 128GB of RAM (whereas I believe the iMac might be 32GB of ram?)
    iMac memory expansion here:  http://www.apple.com/why-mac/compare/
Mac Pro Memory expansion here:  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1333-memory
Also the iMac is a much thinner device, and you can't separate the display from the CPU (they are an "all-in-one" device) so you can't upgrade or change the primary display, but you can add a second display).
With the Mac Pro, you can add additional graphics cards, and you can power up to twelve displays (if you wish).  You also have a much more powerful processor on the Mac Pro (one quad-core, or up to two 6-Core Intel Xeon processors).  So the Mac Pro a much more powerful machine.
The iMac is just a nice cute/thin desktop display (all-in-one), but with a quad-core processor it's still a fairly fast/decent machine.
If you are doing heavy 3D graphics rendering or gaming, or graphics design (3D CAD, etc.) then I would probably go with something more powerful like a Mac Pro, since you can get better graphics cards, and the Mac Pro will run much cooler (as you're trying to do massive rendering).
    > Do you need an iMac to get a mac pro or does it come with a monitor?
No, you don't need an iMac for a Mac Pro (they are two separate and different computers), but yes you do need an external monitor display if you buy a Mac Pro.
Any 1920x1080p monitor/display with an HDMI input will be sufficient for using with a Mac Pro.

  • What Firewire Cable to buy?

    hi,
does anyone know what firewire cables work with isight? in order with the firewire cable adaptor, the thingy which holds the cable and plugs into the isight? i would like to use a cable which is about 5-6 meters.
    thankful for any tips.
    alex

    Hello Alex,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
the problem with most 3rd party FW cables is, that they don't fit into the isight cable holder thingy.
In addition to the suggestions others have offered here, you can get cables from your Apple VAR, Apple Store, or from the Apple web site. Several choices are available from Apple.
If you buy from an Apple retailer, he can find the correct items for you. For web ordering, as of this date:
]The 1.8m replacement for the cable that came with my iSight.
    ]The short (0.5m / 19 inches) version.
iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions also lists a replacement
    b FireWire Cable Adapter
    - current price: $6.25 US, but I cannot locate the part number. Your Apple retailer can help you.
    <hr>
so the task would be to find either a FW cable that matches the apple FW cable plug, or to find a ""connector" which would connect a 3rd party FW cable with a white apple one.
You can buy the entire iSight Accessory Kit, which includes both the cable
    b AND adapter
    as well as replacement mounts.

  • What's the best way to configure my thunderbolt drive with the new mac pro?

I have an external pegasus drive connected to my mac pro.  Obviously the computer is limited in space and I was wondering whether I should move my "user" folder which will include documents, pictures, videos, etc onto the pegasus.  That way the 256gb hard drive on the mac pro is dedicated solely for the os and and apps.  What do you guys think?

    I concur. See the following:
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • I have downloaded a movie with subtitle to iMovie. When playing the video, the subtitle does not show up through the entire video. It happens to my Mac Air and Mac Pro.

I have downloaded a video with subtitle. When playing the edited video, the subtitle does not show up in the entire video. The subtitle comes and goes in the video.I have tried with my Mac Pro and Mac Air, with the same result. I have downloaded movie with subtitle before and never had this problem. Please advise.

I'm not very knowledgable on this but subtitles are sometimes on a separate track from the main movie.  Try opening the downloaded video in Quicktime Player and saving it - you may be asked if you want to "flatten movie".  Choose to do this.  The resulting movie will probably now work OK.  Others may be able to supply more comprehensive instructions.
    Geoff.

  • What Video camera to buy?

I am working with a not for profit group who is interested in putting some videos about members of the group as part of telling it's history.
I am considering buying a consumer camera, probably HD, and am wondering which camera's work well in this situation.I suspect that we will also be using some Sony studio camera footage if that makes a difference.
    Thanks

I am no expert so I'll just tell you what works for me and what doesn't.
AVCHD as I've experience with my Panasonic HDC-SD9 absolutely *****! There is not better way to put it. The compression fragments are like a JPG compressed to leass than 40%. Also, the video cam ***** for low light, so anything I've done in low light has been unusable between the grain the fragments.
Now, as sad as it is, with my $1000 video camera sitting doing nothing, I have found my new love. My Canon SD960 IS. It does 720P video and it is nice. I've watched it directly off the camera on a 52" LCD and it was very nice. I'm guess that for what you are doing this might be a good choice. Not only does this camera do great video, it aslo take great pictures! After all, it's a camera that takes video, not the other way around.
Seriously, video on these devices (cameras) has gotten really good for general consumer use and it works for me for the most important thing in my life, my daughter (16 months now).
Do youself a favor and avoid AVCHD like the plague!
I won't even go into the nightmare I had editing, or even getting a computer good enough to edit AVCHD.
Curse Panasonic Video and HP Computer hardware. Curse you both!

  • What are the differences between Mac Air and Mac Pro?

What are really the main differences between the Macbook Air and the MacBook Pro?
I am thinking of getting a laptop by mac. I like the prices of the Air but the Pro seems better performance.
However my needs are internet, email, word processing and some photos, pictures etc.
would i still be able to do many good applications on the Air vs the Pro?
    suggestions please?
    thanks

The base model current 2013 Air will perform faster and better in general than the base model 13" non-Retina Macbook Pro.
    Ive got both of them.
    On the Air:
    Faster wifi (by far) 802ac
Faster boot and read/ write due to SSD
Much longer battery life due to Haswell upgrade made in June
Crisper sharper screen, better to stare at for long periods
MUCH FEWER parts to go bad,.....also only one moving part, the Fan
No HD to crash from mechanical failure
Packing the AIr around is a dream since is nearly the weight of an Ipad.
Dont get fooled like most do in seeing the super-skinny AIr as less than a full power machine, ....thats always someones first huge mistake when they see one.

  • What external Hard drive can I get to use w/ my iMac and Macbook pro w/ Lion software? I have never used one. I need to back up my photos, iTunes, documenta, etc., Im a nursing student and very worried about losing my stuff. Any suggestions?

I have had my macbook pro and desktop since 2008 now.  I have never had time to just sit down and learn about time machine and external hard drives.  I am in nursing school and barely have time to breathe, so when I try to read the threads, all the tech terms run together.  I have been referred to LaCIe, but I read some things saying problems with Lion (which I am highly disapointed in so far-but like I said, I have not had a lot of time to sit down and try to figure out out the kinks), Is there a good external harddrive anyone reccommends that will be easy/simple (not because I am lazy- I literally have no time w/ all my school work to figure out something complicated) , and go with my desk top and lap top?
My laptop started messing up in class the other day, and it has a lot of memory left, so I don't understand.  It kept freezing up like a PC.  Ever since I downloaded Lion, it seems my computers have gotten slower. ;(    I have MacKeeper downloaded on both of them. I cleaned stuff off, it seems to be working better right now. But I am still soooo scared that something will happen and I will lose all of my info.
I would be grateful of any advice/suggestions that anyone can give me.
    Thanks

  • What's a good calendar service to use with iCal on iPhone and mac?

Sometime around iOS 7 and Mavericks updates, my Google calendar stopped playing nice with iCal on my phone. I'm wondering what other people are doing.
I don't know whether it was Google or Apple that caused the issue, and I'm not too fussed either way, I just want to have something that works again.
What does 'not playing nice' mean?
I used to be able to create an appointment, add my wife as an invitee, and it would appear in her iCal.
Now, it appears in her email, but not calendar. Clicking "yes" on the email loads safari instead of iCal. Then there's this whole log in thing. It's annoying.
    What I'd like
    Three things:
    1. I'd like my wife and I to each have a personal calendar. She should have read/write access to her calendar, and read-only to mine (and vice versa).
    2. I'd like a share calendar that we can both see and write to. We used this for family events.
    3. I'd like to be able to invite my wife to an event, and have that invite appear in iCal both on her phone and her mac.
Everything should of course work well with iCal.
I don't care if it works with Google services, although if there's a way to fix my google calendar so that it works right, I'm open to that.

Unless you want a new computer, forget about AVCHD. It requires too much muscle to edit comfortably on anything but the fastest computer.
What camera is nice, depends on your budget. Formats that are easy to edit are HDV, DVCProHD (P2) and XDCAM. In the consumer range you could look at the Canon HV40 or XH-A1s, in the prosumer range look at the Panasonic AG-HPX170, Canon XH-H1s, JVC GY-ND250 or Sony HVR Z5 or Z7 and all Sony XDCAM cameras, especially the EX1 and EX3. In the professional range look at the Sony PDW-F355 or upward.

Pages load fine. When scrolling down, the video tears and becomes completely illegible. Refreshing the page fixes it until I scroll down further. Also, the built-in feedback page won't let me submit once I've filled it out. I had none of these problems with FF4 Betas 10-up, until RC1. And it's bad enough to make FF unusable. First and foremost there are forums for iCloud and iOS as well as your iDevices.
Try using those where you will find more detail and maybe get down to brass tacks and specifics.
iOS 5 rollout was rough. So was iCloud. Always helps to wait though iOS 5.01 isn't perfect either.
Same maybe goes and wait for iTunes 10.5.0.
Kindly give answers??? what is that?
