I have to make a banner mpu ad which plays video, the file i
have is a wmv file (3000k).
Should i convert this file to a flash video file and drop it
in the flash file or should i convert it to another video file
format bearing in mind that the file size has to be its very
minimum.

I've come to the IL forum simply because of the number of file formats IL will process. My question however is more generic to file formats.
I work with a large local county government (just as a citizen) and one of the projects we're working on is to get a full suite of maps (and other GIS output) for distribution. Although they will be made available online, the intent is to print/plot.
For some maps, we'll want to have the capability to add vector graphics (ovals, rectangles, text, arrows) for highlighting.
The intent is for the county to provide machine readable GIS output so that we can do our own printing (via Kinkos for example). We'll also be putting the maps online although only for simple viewing and downloads.
What file format(s) should I ask to have the map sets in?
Because I'm a novice when it comes to understand which format to ask for I've done some homework on jpg, tiff, gif, etc. I think IL will take in any of them and that's where any vector graphics would be added (for print destined output). I also have FW which could be used for web destined output if needed.
What is most important is the quality of the printed output so I'm assuming dpi is going to be important. I'm also assuming that we'll ask for the output to be intended for a rather large plot (e.g. 36" x 48" or perhaps even larger) even though we may not actually produce a map of that size. For what I've learned on this and other Adobe forums, no matter what file size and format we get, printing to larger paper will eventually lose visible resolution thus the intent to start with the largest we'd ever print. We might have circumstances where we would crop but again understand what can happen when blowing those up.
One option, of course, is to have the county produce PDFs. Is that a good idea for our purpose meaning do we lose anything to have the file format generally acceptable? I'm assuming somewhere along the process we'll need to produce pdfs for downloads but that may not be the best format to get from the GIS output.
Keep in mind that we don't have GIS software at present. In the future we may move to using a GIS viewer which would mean we would have file generation capabilities, but for now, we're going to have to handle non-gis output files.
I'm not even sure I'm asking the question well so feel free to educate me along the way. I'm interested in learning.

Working with PDFs is pretty much universal these days, for practical purposes.
Understand this about PDFs and Illustrator: Illustrator's Save As...PDF dialog provides an option for "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities." Selecting that option actually embeds in the resulting file a full duplication of the file as native Illustrator objects. That results in very bloated PDF file sizes--because they contain two full copies of the file.
That's not what you want to do for PDFs that will be distributed/downloaded. So you're going to want to keep your AI-native files separate anyway. Opening a PDF that was saved without that option turned on in Illustrator is pretty much the same thing as opening it other mainstream drawing progams. So the "seamlessness" of PDF/Illustrator is really much about marketing.
But no matter. Your mind is already made up to use AI for this. If it were me, I'd be exploring all options.

What's the best choice re video file format in a camera for iDVD production

I currently am using a Sony DSC H1 digital camera which does shoot video in MPEG 1. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert those clips to MPEG 4. The results on my TV screen after processing through iMovie and iDVD are "acceptable" but I will want to upgrade to a good video camera at some point to expand my capabilities. My question is - what video file format should I look for in a camera in order to produce the easiest to work with and best quality result from my iMac?? I am using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and iDVD 5.0.1. What format should I use for new FCP slide show to DVD project?

I want to edit a slide show movie. I have all of the high resolution images. I plan on authoring the project to DVD 16:9 anamorphic with DVD SP. Later I would like to author to 1920 x 1080 HD on Blu-Ray. ( I can't afford Adobe BR authoring software at this time, I want to start with the DVD) I am looking for advice. I want the quality of DVD and future Blu-Ray to be best possible quality. I'm thinking there are two options I might use:
1. Edit the FCP project in HD 1920 x 1080. Use Compressor to convert the sequence to 16:9 anamorphic for DVD SP input. I am thinking I will have the HD sequence ready for the Blu Ray in the future. I like this approach. Is the conversion possible with compressor? What exact format and frame rate should I use for the FCP project?
2. Edit the FCP project in 16:9 Anamorphic. Compress for DVD SP input. I am not fond of this option. I don't look forward to making rectangular pixel images in Photoshop for one. That will be a lot of work for this project. I won't have an HD sequence ready for Blu Ray in future, I will have to start a new project from scratch to make the HD version.

Edit in a 1920x1080/30p Pro Res sequence settings.
Export that to a self contained movie current settings, and use which ever SD DVD preset to encode for use in DVD SP.
The self contained movie can eventually be used in Adobe Encore for blu ray authoring.
But having "high resolution" images/photos means nothing in video.
1 dpi is sufficient at 1920x1080 unless you plan to pan and zoom, in which case double the pixel size, not the dpi.
300 dpi produces no better image than 1 dpi.

24 is a good frame rate for most animations but some people like 30 and for the max stress on user systems and animation smoothness, use 60.

You'll need to be much more specific; there are 20 or 60 different kinds of high definition. Some require nothing, some require superfast RAID, some require specialized hardware support.

What format should I use for Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive

I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum section, but hopefully you can help. I just got a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive with the firewire 400/usb 2.0 port. I installed the cd and followed the manual and it told me to format it. I went to disk utility and went to the "erase" section, but now it wants me to choose the type of format: mac os extended (case-sensitive), mac os journaled, mac os (case-sensitive, journaled) and so on.... Can anyone tell me what those formats mean/do, and what is the best one to use? Thanks!

Case sensitive is really if you are using some old UNIX programs that you have brought the source over to OS X and compiled them. And the UNIX programs have to expect a case-sensitive file system.
I'm betting this isn't the case... or you'd know what a case sensitive file system is.

What external hdd bus should I use for FCP 7?

Howdy! My colleague and I are editing a film in FCP 7, and media handling has become somewhat, complicated, shall we say. So we decided that we're both going to buy external hard drives, and keep them in synch using something like Super Duper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. I've been doing some research, but I'm still unsure as to what connection I should use? We're both using MacBook Pro's with firewire 800 ports, and USB 2.0 ports (No thunderbolt). Since these drives are going to be used exclusivly for video and audio, how fast of a connection should we have so that the connection doesn't cause a bottle neck? I know that Sata III can do up to 6.0 Gb/s, but I also know that a hard drive can't utilize that much bandwidth. So will USB 2.0 slow it down, or would it be fast enough? Or should I opt for firewire 800?

P.S. is 5200rpm's enough, or should I get 7200rpm?

If you plan to use the drive for editing/rendering media files, you'll need a 7200rpm drive and a Firewire or eSATA connection.
If you're only using the drive for backup purposes or general data storage, USB and 5400rpm will work.

What kind of motor should I use for lifting a heavy load?

I'm working on an automation application in which I need to control a lifting mechanism with heavy load (about 120 lbs). I will be getting constant temperature readings and based on that data I can determine the rate of change of the temperature. If the temperature rate is too fast then I need to be able to slow down the motor, if it is too slow then I need to speed it up. I'm looking for some support with choosing the right motor and hardware so that I have full speed control, while still being able to lift this heavy load, hold the load in a certain position, and then raise the load back to its original position. I was considering a stepper motor for this due to its ability to brake so the load can stabilize. Is this the right call or should I use a continuous servo? Where can I get such a stepper that can handle this type of load and has software that interfaces with LabVIEW? Would I be safe getting low-cost hardware for this application? Any guidance would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

I think that is the route we are going to take because the DC motor won't be as expensive as a high-torque stepper or servo. Also, I have three engineers that will be calculating the motor size based on gear reduction, spool size, cable length, and the load that we have to lift (which is about 120 lbs.). If any of you would like to suggest a motor size, that would be great too. I'm thinking something around 1HP should probably do it. My goal is to stay cost-effective while making an easy apparatus. I know that the worm gears may also be inefficient at times but it seems like the best solution for this application. Not to mention it's not to hard for our mechanical engineers here to make the spool and bearings. And I believe you can buy a DC motor that interfaces directly with a worm gear. However, a follow up question is what computer hardware do I need to control the voltage of the motor so I have speed control? Is this done through an RS232 board? mobile service or normal SQL database. Which should I use or am I completely off track?

Mobile Services uses SQL Database, nothing special on that SQL Database, its just like any other "normal" SQL Database.
Mobile Services provides "back-end services" that simplifies accessing SQL Database, Notification services, authentication, etc...
Let's assume you don't use Mobile Services, to use SQL Database, you would need your app (both mobile and web) to connect to the database. In practice, you will not want to expose your SQL database directly, so you'd end-up writing some kind of a "facade"
that your app will access instead of directly connecting to the database.
Instead of writing that "facade", Mobile services provides that for you (you still have to write code though, but less than what you need to write if you're rolling your own).
Both your web app and mobile apps can share the same SQL database (pay attention to the mobile service schema).
To help you decide, ask yourself what other features will your mobile app require? Authentication? Notification? etc... are you prepared to write those on your own or use various libraries instead of one?

Isolate lips--what face paint color should I use for best green screen keying effect?

Hello there! I am using Elements 11.
It sounds like I answered my question in my question. Green, right? But , face paint doesn't have the reflective, glossy quality that a true green screen would have. Does that change anything? Should I look for green face paint or would another color work better in this context?
Again, I'd like to isolate the lips of my subject. The shot will be a close-up, framed to where it only includes lips, chin and nose. Let me know if it'll help to provide a screenshot.
One more question... Once I've removed the background and isolated the lips, is it possible to move them around the frame discretely? Meaning, they appear here in bottom center and then suddenly appear in upper left corner?

I am using Mac version. Good question since I do NOT have Chromakey.
To help us along, I have uploaded a number of images from a test I did yesterday.
I am getting some results but they are imperfect.
I do believe my main issue has to do with a lack of uniform LIGHTING. As my subject's lips move, it creates shadows thus making it difficult for Elements to pick up the green.
I used Non-Red Key and then Garbage Matte to get the results that you see.

Which file format should i use?

I'm trying to decide on a file format that is high quality, but takes up less space than a 256 kbps AAC file. I'm currently considering going with a 224 kbps mp3 file format, but I'm not sure if this would cause a noticeable sound quality difference with the Apple earbuds or my computer speakers. Any reccomendations would be great.

Right, gonna have to stick my two pennies worth in here.
Considering HDD's are getting so big nowadays, encoding audio at a lower bit rate than max is a bit pointless. If you're going to encode, do it at the best possible quality. I've just done about 600 CD's and that's only about 43GB and that was encoded at 320kbps vbr joint stereo in mp3. Some people may scoff and say that vbr isn't very good, but I have to disagree. At those settings, the audio is as good as the original CD and I have a very good ear. Vbr will actually encode the optimum bitrate for the part of the track it is encoding, if there is a quiet part, it will be encoded at low bitrate to save space, but to your ears, you will not notice a thing. In general, vbr will bring the size of an encoded mp3 down, but still keep very good quality.
