What were AFM font files for?

Considering that Adobe Font Folio provides and AFAIK always provided PostScript Type 1 fonts, in its Mac version, with outline files + a suitcase file per family that supposedly included the font metrics in its resource fork, and in its Windows versions, with PFB outline files + PFM metrics files, what were AFM file ever intended for? Why did Adobe also include those? What were their purported use case? As a matter of fact, wasn't every other foundry providing PostScript Type 1 fonts in the same way? In what case would one ever need those AFM files for, even back in the day?

Back in the day, there were applications that used the .afm files to obtain metrics beyond those put into the .pfm files on Windows or the so-called screen fonts on the Mac. And for that matter, there were also applications that ran on raw MS-DOS and/or UNIX that didn't support the other metrics mechanisms.
Also, ATM (Adobe Type Manager, not the cash machine) had the capability of creating .pfm files from a combination of the .pfb file and corresponding .inf and .afm files delivered in the early font packages which often did not have a .pfm file.
Obviously, with OpenType fonts, the need for all those other files has gone away.

  • Does anyone know what the default font is for MacMail?

Does anyone know what the default font is for the Mail program? My son changed my mail font and I want to change it back, but I can't remember what the original default is! Anyone? Thanks!

I rarely use Mail (normally use Gmail in Safari) so I am 99.99% sure mine is still at the default. It is Helvetica 12.

Fonts are handled by your operating system and installed through the respective System Control panel (Windows) or Fontbook (Mac). On Windows simply type "Fonts" in the search bar in the start menu and when you open the panel/ folder use File --> Add Font. On Mac the procedures are similar, you just need to find the Fontbook app in Applications:Utilities.

  • How to install .lst and .afm font files on Windows?

Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't find it.
My university tutor gave me a few font files in the form of .lst and .afm I assume these are the types of files you get when you package InDesign documents.
I'm just wondering if there's anyway to integrate it into Windows because changing the file format to .ttf or .otf doesn't seem to help.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. The other files I got with the .afm's and .lst's were very small files, not even 1KB, compared to the 16KB .afm's. I think the files she's given me haven't been exported properly/all the data isn't there.
Anyway, thanks again for the help. I'll be able to keep what you've said in mind for any other issues.

  • What were the original speakers for the G3 B&W PowerPC?

I am looking to get a set of speakers to go with the cherry 21" CRT Studio Display I picked up (it still has the clear plastic on the apple logos). What are the original speakers that would have been available for this computer? Will any of the the harmon kardon spheres or sound sticks work with this mac? What is a Digital Sound Port (is it just a fancy way of saying L/R/Ground/DC-Power on a four-pin jack like the appletalk mics)? Is USB 1.0 fast enough to run the spheres that were available with the G4 Cube? I am seeking historical accuracy without going beige. Any oldtimers that can remember that far back please offer your sugestions.
    Hooked on the Shape

    Hi, funkymonkeypie -
The B&W G3 models did not come with any external speakers as a standard option; the only speaker they came with was the built-in mono one.
All Macs prior to the G4 Digital Audio model (except the Cube) had analog sound out ports. The Cube had a special external USB amplifier arrangement.
Not positive, but I believe the USB ports on the B&W G3 were USB 1.1, not 1.0, and are the same as the ones on the Cube. Don't know if the amp and speakers that came with the Cube will work on the B&W.
Don't know the answers to your other questions - perhaps someone else will post in with those.

  • DW CS5 - what determines the font specs for design view (without Live View on)?

Says it all above. The non-Live View font I get bears no relationship to the font spec'd (and displayed) for the page in Live View. I assume I have a preference set wrong but can't find it.Help appreciated. - Jim

You won't see any custom web fonts in Design View, if that's what you mean.  Design View is not and never has been 100% reliable because it is not a browser.  At best Design View is an approximation of what you can expect to see in some browsers.

  • What are these folders/files for?

What's it all about? Is it corrupt and should I delete these files? Do I need them?
I am just trying to get to the bottom of why my computer is always running slow.

that's where iTunes stores the cover art for your media files. it's completely normal. you will want to keep those unless you have manually embedded artwork in your files.
have a look at the Mac OS X speed FAQ instead.

  • What are these fonts used for?

InDesign CS4 has a list of fonts that are set apart from other fonts with horizontal divider lines. The preview under the Type > Fonts menu shows foreign language characters for most of the fonts. Yet, if these fonts are applied to text, standard English characters are displayed. What would one use these fonts for?

Yet, if these fonts are applied to text, standard English characters are displayed.
Well, yes, because changing the font should not change the character set -- i.e., changing the text "Russian" to a font containing Cyrillic should not change the text to "Русский". It's just circumstantial these fonts also contain Latin characters; if they wouldn't, the text would change to pink boxes (indicating 'missing glyph').
The fonts are set apart because ID uses some sort of classification, probably based on the Unicode coverage per font; it seems to group per script. Browsing my list, I see separations between fonts for Chinese, Japanese, Korean (?), Arabic, Thai, and Hebrew.

  • What movie-video type files for a windows PC

I have some movies (4.m4v type files) and videos (flv files) that I wish to send to a windows PC user.
Will they be able to view them with their normal windows software, or will I have to convert them

I recommend Gom Player. It can handle a wide variety of file formats including the ones you have stated. It is free and can be downloaded from http://www.gomlab.com. It can also play incomplete files and thus, very useful for unfinished downloads.

  • What are compatible media files for the Tungsten E2

I have a video clip that I'd like to put on my Tungsten E2.  The current file is saved as a .wmv.  When I attempt to sync using the Palm desktop software's media feature, I get the message that the file format is not compatible.   I can't find any information as to what are compatible file formats.  Any advice for me?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    Avi's and mpg's are pretty safe.  Wmv's and .mov's won't sync.

  • What is the best file for editing?

I have movie clips that I need to burn onto a DVD-R. This DVD will be given to a friend and he will edit the contents in his own editing program (Pinnacle software). He asked for the highest resolution possible.
Of the following, which is the best file to create for him so that he can edit it?
    - DV
    - AVI
    - MPEG-1
    - MPEG-2
    - MPEG-4
    Thank you!!

if your source is from a camcorder, the native codec DV is 'best'.
iMHD imports those streams from tape 1by1, it is a 'clone', a bit-identical 'copy' from the tape.. couldn't be an better...
avi - is no codec nor 'format', just an old Windows media container. can contain literally all kind of codecs..
mpeg1 - historic (=old) codec, Standard don't allow a higher res than 320x240 .. antiqué, therefor veery compatible.. not meant for editing, a delivery codec, e.g. on VCDs...
mpeg2 - comes in many flavors, as on videoDVDs (.vob), .mod (JVC camcorders), .ts (transport streams from digital receivers), and in many 'versions', as h263, h264.. again: delivery codec by concept.
mpeg4 - 'inbetween' version of mpeg1 and mpeg2, comes again in many flavors.. delivery codec by concept.

  • What kind of DNG file for DNG profile editor ?

Can somebody help me??? I have a problem to use DNG profile:
I am user of Fujifilm S5Pro, which has RAF file (=raw). The ACR (start from version 3...) and DNG understand my RAF files very well. But DNG profile editor dose not want to open it, even if Adobe DNG Converter 4.5 converts it to DNG file. My workflow is:
    Launch Adobe DNG Converter.exe, => convert RAF to DNG (tryed different settings);
Launch DNG profile editor, => trying to open DNG file => have error???
May be I'm doing in a wrong way? Please advise me.

I tried to do the same on other PC with Vista (fully English). Also update DNG converter up to 4.6. And no success... :-(.
Every time I have the same error: "DNG Profile Editor could not open the selected image. Note that the selected image must be a valid DNG color image."
I could not understand... where is a bug.
Moreover, I took NEF from Nikon D80 and CR2 from Canon 20D and converted them to DNGs by converter 4.6. DNG Profile Editor did not want to open them on both Windows Vista and XP, and made the same error.
Do I really do wrong things? I'm completely lost
    Thanks in advance,
    Slava

  • What are the extra XD CAM EX files for?

I don't understand why the EX1 produces these strange files. If you shoot somethiong on the EX1 you get not only the MP4 file but also one SMI, one PPN, one XML, one BIM file. What are these extra files for? I don't get it.

Josh, I don't know how young you are, but try to moderate your commentary a bit, eh?
When I first got into editing with Adobe several years ago, the forums actually stuck to useful info and were friendly. I've been quite content with what I've been doing so far with my 7 year old stuff as have been my clients. Now I'm doing MAJOR upgrading; a total revamp of my studio and I'm finding that there is MUCH to learn; so much has changed from the days of "just get the fastest processor you can and the most amount of RAM you can afford and you're good to go." So, where do I turn? To the Adobe forums. MUCH has changed here too. :(
Sorry to be so upset, but you calling me lazy in another thread when I asked a sincere question wasn't taken too well. I'm a 57 year old grandpa that is just trying to make his way in a difficult economy by working 15-16 hour days, 7 days almost every week for the past 3 months. Lazy? Like I said, back off and be useful in the forums because in other posts I see you have some good contributions.
    Larry
