What were they thinking?

Yep, that one actually does have an explanation...
The system tries to put the file in the Recycle Bin before it removes it from the original location. So you have to at least have enough space to hold a copy of the original file.
Or you can just shift-delete and it'll go away completely but you can't undo!

OK... so I'm working on rebuilding the OS on an older machine, and on reboot the AMI BIOS gives me the following error message:
No Keyboard Found.
Press F2 to continue.
Now, I've seen this kind of message before, but I'm thinking... OK, so you can't find a keyboard attached, but you want me to press the F2 key on it... hummm....  Makes me wonder sometimes what the programmer was thinking when they typed up that error message.  Did they really think that it was logical, or just not think that one through.. certainly seems like someone else would have caught that one.
Just wondering what really odd, or downright silly error messages others have seen.

    Question
The latest version of Firefox no longer asks if you want to save open tabs for your next session..I HATE not having that option. What were they thinking? (I think this is self explanatory)

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.<br />
    <br />
    Another possibility is to use:

  • Wow Itunes 11 *****.  What were they thinking?  How do I load songs into it?

It is mind boggling how back Itunes has become.  I've been working for 30 years with computers and I cannot use that software.  Once I get it to install correctly (if it ever does), how do I get my songs into the library.  I used be able to select whole disk folders at a time and it would load them all.  Now it seems I can only load them a song at a time...say it ain't so.  I have thousands of songs.
Ah, I said, I know what I'll do, I'll connect my Ipod touch and load the library from there.  I did this before I attempted to update to 11.3.   When I connected my ipod and tried to get ITunes to sync the with the library on the ipod all it would do is ask me if I wanted to delete everything on my Ipod....NO! I want to copy the IPod library in to Itunes on the PC.  Since when does sync mean only in one direction.  Blocked.
    Install of 11.3 failed....blocked.
I bought my wife a new ipod nano 7g (wonder if I can get my money back).  Guess what? can't load songs onto it from my Macbook cause I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and it requires a later version of Itunes that won't run on my mac.  Blocked.  Have to look at updating to OSX 10.6.8 which I don't have a lot of confidence in given the way apple has mucked things up so badly with other thing (e.g., changing connector to lightning, Itunes, etc.).  That's why I'm trying to use windows.  But alas....blocked.
Apple Soft has gone mad.  No better and maybe worse than Microsoft and Google Soft.
Can you tell I'm frustrated at having to wrestle constantly with this stuff.
    Any hope someone can help.

Enable the menu bar with Ctrl+B. From here you can use File > Add Folder to Library.
Enable the side bar with Ctrl+S. Makes navigating the library easier.
iTunes has always had a limited sync feature, media syncs to the device, ratings, play counts and purchases can sync in either direction. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
For general advice installing/updating iTunes see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • IOS 6 Maps.. All the hype for nothing..... Real disappointment !!! What were they thinking?

I was so eagerly waiting for ios 6 and was super anticipating the 3D maps option!!! Well finally the big day came, and I updated to ios 6 and I was so eagerly waiting to see the city I live in 3D like the way those guys did at the apple event... And what do I get????? A poorly rendered ..absolute rubbish map!!! So disappointed and wish Steve jobs was still alive at moments like this!!!! Apple... Get you **** straight or buckle under Samsung and google. Hey doing a much better job at the moment!!!

    Sadly there's no going back!
No going back to the days of steve jobs who made software that worked. It just worked.
And thats why apple became great. I cannot find the words to describe how bad apple maps are. The vision is gone and the credibility is gone. I own all the products apple produce and would rave to anybody who would listen as to how great the are. Many upgraded to apple as a result. Now i find after hoping that this release of the next iphone maybe maps would be better, battery wouldnt die after some use and the processor wouldnt lag so much. Well i have been sickened again and very possibly for the last time.
    RIP the visionary

  • Adobe Reader Acrobat DC: what where they thinking??

I made an Adobe account especially for this posting. I am not someone who complains a lot or writes all over the web about software. But for this new DC thing I make a big exception.
I did build a new PC and after that I also went over to Adobe site to download Adobe Reader. Something was there by default called Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
Mmm, confusing: I don't have or want Acrobat, that's a complete other line of Adobe products. So had to search but no, turns out that for some reason the reader now also is part of the Acrobat line. Plus only DC is offered, nothing else.
    Well okay, download and install.
First impression: looks weird, a way to big tools sidebar too. Ah well, I can disable that. Nope, the sidebar is always there.
Interface and layout: horrible. But okay, I can learn to live with that.
Okay, next step: disable the automatic update. Nope, can not be done, the auto update is always On.
Well okay, lets see if I can get rid of all the "become member" and "Cloud" notifications. Nope, Adobe somehow decided to nag people to death in the Reader so they get a paid account and go into the cloud.
I really don't know what Adobe was thinking when the made this DC thing but it's just horrible. I know the side Toolbar will have the option to be hidden constantly within a month or 3, I know I can disable the Auto update withing Windows Services, I know I can use Windows Registry tweaks to disable things, I know there is a DC Configurator Wizzard to set things.
But it's ridicules that all that is needed to get a normal working, simple PDF Reader!!
And that is my experience for personal use: for my work DC has even more become a completely useless tool with all the things that have to be configured before the users can use it.
Adobe, do mention on your download page that DC is no simple PDF Reader anymore but just another way to generate money by trying to get people to get a Adobe account so they can get more features? Do mention that Adobe Reader as we know it is no more, that it has been replaced by this DC thing?
Sorry Adobe, I uninstalled this DC thing and I am looking for a good and simple alternative for at work. With sadness I say goodbye to Adobe Reader which I used for so many years. Thank you Adobe by rewarding us all with this ... this ... DC Thing

    Hi ,
It seems like you are not happy with the new UI for Acrobat DC.
First of all I would like to tell you that Adobe Reader DC and Adobe Acrobat DC are two different software .
DC is the common thing linked to both the software. The DC ,i.e Document Cloud states the ease of access of the PDF files, that you can view your PDF' from anywhere and from different gadgets such as your phone, laptop and your desktop by just logging to your account .
If you did not find the new interface interesting ,you could fill in the following wish form and report the same to our engineers and they could work on it and see what best could be done for the users .

  • MPEG DVD Pal Widescreen at 1.458 PAR, what were Adobe Thinking?

Okay apart from the fact that Adobe wanted to stiff me for another £999 to upgrade from the CS3 Production Premium suite to CS5.5, my first HDV project on the new system messed up; and I thought I was moving forward (apart from my bank balance) phew got that off my chest.  Whichever way you look at this and no matter how many technicians tell us otherwise, DVD players, You Tube, Vimeo, well the world really have been happy using a PAR of 1.422222 for PAL Widescreen and now Adobe are using 1.458 the "correct" PAR for the BBC apparently having read previous threads (well yippee da).  This doesn't help me uploading my videos for a client to You Tube, Vimeo or a DVD and having black bars either side, they couldn't care less whether it is the correct standard for the BBC or not they just want their footage to look like everyone else's.  What are you playing at Adobe, just give us another option in Media Encoder to export the same way we have been happy doing for years and stop rolling over for the BBC.  Incidentally I upload MPEG2 DVD to You Tube and have been getting good results so that is why I am using MPEG2 for You Tube and Vimeo (but I'm sure someone will now give me a good reason not to).   I have been fighting Adobe's (and Window's)  corner for the last god knows how many years while the Mac crew have been tempting me with that alluring mistress FCP, more stable audio and better colour resolution.  Adobe sort this out we've had enough of this nonsense, what is it with big companies they become god like in their sheer arrogance, give us what we want and stop toying with your minions.  This really hacks me off.

I understand the frustration that your tone implies, but you've run off the tracks here.
The computer world uses square pixels.  Vimeo, YouTube, etc.  When people upload anything but square to those services, the resulting picture is distorted, as it's displayed in square pixels.  And I see a lot of distorted videos on YouTube.
    http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&guide=1728585&page=guide.cs
I'm fairly certain that if you upload an MPEG2 to YouTube, they're going to recompress it to FLV or MP4 for you.  It's not one of their "supported formats."  So, I wouldn't be surprised if they muck it up.
£999 to go from CS3 to CS5.5. sounds like a pretty good deal to me... that's a three version jump.  I also believe Adobe has become more responsive to customer input in the past few years, and not just "rolling over" for big clients.  But, those are opinions.

  • What were you thinking...

Its kind of hard to work like this... I could live with one dead pixel, an awful trackpad and a key that doesnt work half the time (the T-key) but this just makes me sad..

Waited a bit to say anything but while I think the drop down with custom colour menue for a CD is great to look at and that is very nice - I've been working for about 6 hours with the new iTunes and it is incredibly cumbersome and just simply not any of the intuitive and user friendly nature of its older version left.
Visually yes very nice - with two exceptions - playlist has no artwork showing now and loss of cover flow - not that cover flow was particularly useful just a visual interface not found anywhere else.
Between the clunky nature of new iTunes and its penchant for going back to the beginning every other click and whoever it is at iTunes that is responsible for entering their data (and calling things whatever strikes their fancy) it has lost almost any functionality for items not purchased from iTunes.  With well over a 1000 CD's I'm entering now this upgrade probably has cost me several weeks if not months in work.
It seems also the sortability is very deminished. Feel it has pretty much lost the user friendly and more intuitive nature apple was built with and while visually it is lovely functionally it feels like a bad windows product. iTunes by imap - pretty much sums it up.

  • Windows Server Backup cannot backup to network or mapped drive - Microsoft what were you thinking?

I still cannot believe that you cannot do a scheduled backup to a network drive in windows server 2008.  You can only do it to a local internal/external drive.  Microsoft are you crazy?  That goes against all best practices for backing up your data when you should have a backup at least 60 miles away from the original server.  Gives us back the NT Backup tool or provide a solution for this.

Your feedback is valid. This issue has been fixed in WS2008 R2.

That doesn't exactly help people who run windows server 2008 now does it?
something so trivial that could be done in server 2003 with NTBackup and it wasnt included in server 2008? WHo overlooked that.
Why can this not be fixed in server 2008 with a update or a service pack?
Also, then why is it you can do a MANUAL backup to a network drive, but not a scheduled one?

  • What were the site designers thinking?

Please tell me, what were the site designers thinking when they redesigned the Adobe.com site?
I mean, I"m not un-savvy in the world of technology.  I've been using it for nearly 20 years professionally.  I write code, I engineer solutions, I even do reverse engineering on various technologies (software and hardware).  However, the new site is so horrible to navigate, that simply finding the products I already own is nearly impossible.  There's no "my downloads" or "My software", or even a "serial numbers for my crap" menu.  Instead, there is a beautiful, but largely non-functional, set of menus, all perfectly aligned to the pixel for my particular browser and window dimensions.
The level of frustration with this approach is ridiculous.  Sure, it looks great, but there is a decided lack of functionality.  Even the search feature takes me to the trial downloads, not the main "All downloads for things I've already had the misfortune of purchasing".
Seriously Adobe, get it together and think about what your returning customers might need.  Not what your art school instructors might want to see as a new cutting edge concept site layout.  The site is beautiful, but REALLY LACKING in all the normal functional elements that a typical end or enterprise user would like to see.  Counter intuitive would be the nicest way to describe the product access features.  Please fix this.

This is the development forum for Adobe Business Catalyst - The website solution and for it's development.
You should only have access here if your on the BC development program and this has no relevance to the Adobe Site itself, the BC team has no involvement on that.

Credit card and debit card and checking and savings information is encrypted so it is possible to be hacked, but the odds are greater to get hit by the Love Boat then to have a wide scale hack.
Oh yes they do happen, Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Target and quite a few others. But in all the years I have paid my invoice with saved card information I never been hacked.
You use good passwords and the risk is minimal.
    Good Luck

  • I think we should have been given the option to move books from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were downloaded CD booklets and inserts which were in their right place in iTunes. What do others think?

I think we should have been given the option to have our books moved from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were CD booklets and inserts downloaded with the CDs, and the obvious place for them was in iTunes. As it is now, I can no longer use my own convention for naming, sorting etc. The sort facility in iBooks does not work. What do others think?

Apple is more likely to see your comments if you send feedback via:

    =Downgrading from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7=
You may be able to go back with Time Machine but this may involve restoring other items too (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441404).  Alternatively:
Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens.
    Quit iTunes.
Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at:  http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files.   See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20475394.  Do steps 3 and 4.  Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential.  Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.
Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7.  Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved.  Two ways to do this are:
    1.  Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6
    2. Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:
Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/
After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7.  I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:
    AirTrafficHost.framework
    CoreFP.framework
    DeviceLink.framework
    iTunesAccess.framework
    MobileDevice.framework
After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl"  and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since.  See:

Alternatively, check https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441424 which requires you have a Time Machine backup (though possibly if you remove the newer version of these files old ones may be installed with the iTunes 10.7 installer - untested).  A  variant of this is at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20448184

I agree 100%. This is absolutely ridiculous. Bring back the old format, if this is the best you can do. This extremely difficult to read.
