What will exactly happen if I restore or erase content and settings?

My iPad lis of 16 GB which now currently has 5 GB of "excess" .So if I want to erase all in the settings and content, after backing up from iCloud or iTunes would I be able to retain the app data and the content? Would it be safe! I've many photos.. 1.5 GBs of them and 1.3 GBs of app. That's all. 5GB " others ".

You will totally erase the device and return it to out of the box condition.
You will have to set it up all over again and you will have the opportunity to restore from a backup during the activation process.
If you backup and sync with iTunes, when you restore from the backup you will still have to sync with iTunes in order to restore your apps and other media. It should retain your app data and settings in the backup and that should be restored to the decie when you are all through with the process.
Make sure that you backup the and sync with iTunes first before you erase the device. You may want to transfer purchases as well.
Transfer purchases.

  • HT201274 I backed up my iPhone 4 last night, and started the erase contents and settings 4 hrs. ago. How long should it take to complete the erase? Will it automatically be restored?

I backed up my iPhone 4 last night on iCloud, and started the erase all content and settings a little over 4 hrs. ago. How long should I expect it to take to complete this process? Will it automatically do a restore on my phone? The reason I had to do this was because my iPhone 4 would not upgrade the latest IOS. Thanks for any information! Karnysue

Something has gone wrong. That should have happened almost instantly. Force the phone into recovery mode & restore it:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don't see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

  • Erasing Content and Settings -- What happens to the saved apps in itunes?

    Hey all,
I've been thinking about avoiding to do a HUGE backup with my ipod touch 2nd gen 32GB to install iOS4 by erasing all the content and settings of my existing ipod. By HUGE, I mean, leaving your ipod to backup for 6 hours and it's less than 25% done. I tried a few times and gave up each time because it was taking ridiciously long. Anyways, not the issue I'm asking.
I was wondering if I erase all the content and settings from the ipod itself through Settings > General > Reset (or something like that), can I retrieve the applications saved on my computer?
Can i also retrieve my apps if I were to restore my ipod from itunes and set it as a new ipod?
I see my apps from itunes and I'm hoping they have the data saved from my last sync, but I'm worried if I start over with a 'new' ipod, they won't transfer over for whatever reason.
(...though judging by all the forum posts on how iOS4 is pure evil, waiting doesn't seem so bad..)
    Thanks in advance!

    Perfect!
    Thanks for the quick answer!
    Cheers.

  • HT201274 What exactly will happened if I reset all content and settings

I upgraded this phone from someone else's old account bc I had info in their account I needed. Now I'm restricted from doing a lot of things because they're old passwords are still in the system how can I erase there're old IDs and passwords and change them to my own without losing all my contact information?

If you erase all content and settings it will wipe the phone and there will be nothing on it.  If you want to change Apple IDs:
For purchases, go to Settings>Store>Apple ID, tap the ID shown, sign out, sign back in with your ID
For iMessage, go to Settings>Messages>Receive At, tap the ID at the top, sign out, sign back in with your ID
For FaceTime, go to Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, sign back in with your ID
For iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Then set up a new iCloud account on the phone with your Apple ID.
For mail accounts, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars, tap each account, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Then set up your own.
That should about do it.  Note: for app updates, if there are apps on the phone that were purchased with his ID you will need to delete these from the phone and from your iTunes library (if there) in order to not be prompted for the password for his ID.  (Apps are permanently tied to the Apple ID used to purchase them.)

  • What all happens if I reset everything (Content and Settings) on my iPhone 4?

The day before yesterday I have discovered a problem where I have an app stuck on 'waiting...' And the app refuses to either download or delete. I've tried everything, syncing my phone to the computer, trying to redownload it on the App Store, but nothing seems to be working. I'm now assuming the only way to get rid of the app is to reset all content and settings off of my phone, which would be the last resort for me and is something I'd rather not do. But if I do reset everything on my iPhone 4, I would like to know all 'side effects' of this action and if it affects any data concerning credit card information or if my number or data plan will need to be added again. It would be very nice to find a way to avoid resetting my phone and delete the 'waiting..' App, if anyone could give me any information about that problem. If not, it would still be great if I could know what will happen to my phone if I reset it. Thank you so much, any and all information would be greatly appreciated !!

What you are describing as "reset" is actually called a Restore.
FIrst try doing a Reset by holding the power and Home buttons down for 5-10 seconds until you see Apple logo on the screen. This does not erase any of your data or setting, but often helps with problems like yours.
Restore Is a more involved process, but you'll still be OK if you follow instructions.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • What happens if i erase all content and settings?

I want to restore my iphone again on itunes, what happens of i erase all content and settings?

Erasing all content and settings will set your iPhone up just as if you took it out of the box software-wise.  It will go into setup mode - ask you for a WiFi network to join, ask for your Apple ID, set up the telephone, and then ask if you would like to set up as new or restore from a backup.

    Hey there MP1201,
It sounds like you would like to reset your iPod Touch to factory settings but the Erase All Content and Settings function is not working. I would next try using iTunes to restore the iPod with this article:

  • If I backup my iPhone in iTunes then "Erase All Content and Settings", will I still be able to restore the iPhone?

I am asking this because my iPhone 4S is really starting to slow down. And I think is mainly due to the deleted text messages bug (i.e., they are still searchable in spotlight!), therefore not deleted off my phone and slowing it down. There are big delays opening up apps (especially Messages) and now, sometimes,  my phone won't even vibrate when texts come in. I also just want to completely wipe the slate clean and start fresh, but I still would like to save the SMS conversations I already have. So I guess what I am afraid of is wiping my phone then iTunes sees the phone as a completely new phone and not "Drew's iPhone" therefore making a restore impossible. Would this be an issue at all?? Thank you!

If you restore your phone as new - your text message will be deleted from the phone.
If you erase all contents and settings and then restore from a backup, your text message will still be there.

  • I have reset my ipad using General Reset Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

I have reset my ipad using General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

When you restore, you can restore to factory settings or to a backup. Restoring to factory settings removes everything and takes you back to out of the box status and you start all over again. Restoring from your backup will replace all of your app data, bookmarks, email settings and things like that. You still may need to sync all of your purchased apps and music, photos and so on back to the iPad.
I assume you want to restore from your backup to put all of you data back on the device so connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, right click on the device name on the left side under the devices heading and select restore from backup. After you restore from your backup, make sure that you sync all of your other content with iTunes.

  • What are the steps to restore all deleted data and settings by remote wipe? Thanks.

What are the steps to restore all deleted data and settings by Remote wipe?

Go to me.com, logon and go to the FindMyiPhone. If it does not appear then there is not much you can do.
Next step would be to appleid.apple.com and change your password to cut off access to your iDisk.

  • What happens if a complete erase all content and settings is used

hi new to ipad what haven if a complete erase all content and settings is used.

It wipes your iPad back to the original out of the box state.  You'll have a picture of a USB cable and iTunes on the screen and the iPad will have to be set back up in iTunes as a completely new unit.  This is very effective if one is selling their iPad and wants everything wiped off the unit.........
