What will I gain/lose by moving from Expression Media to Lightroom

I've been using Microsoft products in general for years, and in the context of what I'm asking here, the Expression suite since Version 1. Expression Design doesn't come anywhere near Photoshop CS5, which I've just bought, but as well as an editing program I need a decent asset management product. At the moment I use Expression Media mainly to catalog my photographs, but also use the HTML export function to create quick slide shows for the web. Microsoft has not updated Media since version 2 (not that that is a problem in itself) but has also sold it to Phase One, who haven't yet said what they will do with it.
My questions are, will Lightroom provide the same or better functionality as Media did as an asset management tool (since Adobe at least seem to be continuing to develop the program), and what else will I gain from it. At £200 it's not a huge investment, but I wouldn't like to think I may be spending it for no real advantage.
Thanks, from an enthusiastic amateur photograper.

Lightroom is first and foremost a media manager.
I suspect many would have reservations about this.  Lightroom is a very limited media asset manager.  I do not think this is a design goal for the application.  It is designed to manage raw files from supported cameras and some other files - jpg, psd and tiff - and track videos taken with the camera - that's about it.
Many would argue most of the development energy has gone into the dev module.
Another thing to consider is performance.  Because LR is attempting to faithfully reproduce the image as per edits to the dev module it builds and updates a large preview library which has performance and disk space implications.
As suggested, try before you buy.

  • To move from MBPro to Air? What will i gain/loose?

considering moving from MacBook Pro to new Air.
Like the lighter design. My MBPro is 2010 and I find it heavy and HOT to carry so am interested, but how will not having a firewire connection for backup and no disk drive change my life/usability?

I am one of those persons who has done what you contemplate. I used to have 2 MBP's, now I have an 11" 2010 MBA and a 13" 2011 MBA, and I dont feel I have lost much at all.
But understand, everyone's usage chacteristics are unique. I don't play any hi-end games, mainly stuff like Portal, some of the Lucas/Star Wars stuff and Flash. On these, the MBA just about maxes out on capability, if CPU temperatures hovering in the high 90 degrees celsius are any indication.
I do some vieo ripping and conversion, with no problem, and a bit of Adobe CS4 stuff. But mainly, my computer is used for hi-def video watching, web use, and Office applications. I have no complaint in the speed department, and I adore the lighting fast boots.
For Backup, I have had to ditch the speed of FW800 in favor of Thunderbolt. For this I use the LaCie Little-Big Disk-Thunderbolt 1 GB. Dang, is it fast, awefully close to that of an internal drive, if not possibly faster - I have not done any benchmarking. Hopefully someone will actually be shipping a T-Bolt/FW800 adapter soon (Hellooo Sonnet, are you listening?), so I can once again make use of my other external drives at native speeds.
The lack of DVD drive has cause me no pain whatsoever. I have an external Superdrive for my MBA's, but I rarely use them, except for occasional ripping. Since I prefer HD, I get most of my movies online now.
I really think T-Bolt has the potential to make FW800 go the way of SCSI, as far as notebooks go, but the next 6 mos will tell.
Overall, you just have to look at the specs of each platform ( MBP and MBA), and see if the benefits outweigh the "costs". For me, it was a definite, yes.

  • What will i gain from SL to ML?

    I'm presently running a 2007 iMac desktop
    Version 10.6.8
    2.66 GHz IC2duo
    3GB 800 MHz
I like a lot of Snow Leopard users saw all the horror stories about Lion & decided not to update. But I'm hearing subsequent updates & the newer Mountain Lion has fixed a lot of problems. What if any significant will I gain from ML & is it worth it or should I just stick with SL?

Start by looking at the new features of ML (http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/).
Read application that do not work under ML and require keeping SL around somewhere: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Your system is older, so will run slower than some, and upping RAM to its max through macsales.com or crucial.com will help as 4 GB RAM is viewed an "bare minimum".

  • What will happen when Zen7 is removed from eDir?

We are migrating to ZENworks 10. We are almost finished, but there are a handful of workstations that have not got the update, due to individual computer issues or laptops that aren't plugged in frequently.
The E directory administrators would like to uninstall/remove ZENworks 7 from the directory.
We are using Group policies, DLU, and some NAL objects.
NAL is no big deal since the user has to run those.
The absence of DLU should be fine I think since the users already have accounts on the local computer. But once they update their edir password it won't sync. Which is OK, because they'll call the helpdesk and we'll update them to zen10.
Big question, what will happen to the group policies? Will they continue to work locally off a cache or will they cease to work all together?
Are there any other problems to forsee?

There is no supported way to "contract" the eDirectory schema from it
    being extended to support ZENWorks.
You can delete all of the ZENWorks related objects though: NAL Apps,
Policy packages, workstations, inventory, etc. Then, disable the
startup of the ZENWorks services. Finally, remove the ZENWorks plug-ins
from ConsoleOne (or drop C1 altogether if you don't use GW).

  • What will happen if i install lollipop from another region ?

    Hello guys,
I have Z2 and it seems that sony has released lollipop for nordic regions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/lollipop-690-z2-z3-z3c-t3056997)
but mine is UK version. (not carrier locked or something)
I wana know if its safe to install this version on my phone. And What will happen if i install it ?

There are different model number and these are what let us know where in the world or area you are and what bands or networks frequency's your phone will work on so Flashing a EU firmware onto a US device may make your phone stop working ie:receiving a network signal you may also notice that a Z3 for example has different model numbers like D6603, D6643, D6653 and D6616 so flashing a D6653 firmware onto a D6603 could make your device what's known as a brick

First, check your computers model and year - https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do.
If considering the OS 10.8, ensure that your model is supported for the 10.8 OS - http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/.
Also remember to ensure that all your other applications are supported by the new OS - http://www.roaringapps.com.

  • OSD: What is the difference booting into winpe from pxe/media and booting in winpe from OS/Vista?

    Hi,
We have a task sequence issue. Please see
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/56d783e3-214d-4027-84c1-c03cdf2013f1/osd-convert-boot-to-logical-path-failed-0x80070490-retrying-after-attempt-29-it-fails-and-says?forum=configmanagersecurity
for more info. What I would like to know: what is the difference/is there a difference between:
A.booting in PXE/bootable media to WINPE
B.booting from OS (Vista) into WINPE => will this load the x86 boot image (it doesn’t look like it, I CAN see the image loaded ….wim is exactly the same when loaded from OS)
The reason why I ask this: see link above: loading TS from PXE/media works fine, when choosing the exact same TS from WITHIN OS (Vista, 32 bit) the TS fails.
Note: we set the ts step format system disk to NOT run if _SMSTSMediaType is OEMMedia (set in order to not format if prestaged media). So if for some reason this variable would be set booting TS from OS?
    Please advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

What I would like to know: what is the difference/is there a difference between:
    There is none.
Starting a TS using Software Center will download the boot image that's assigned to the task sequence.
PXE (depending on how many boot images are available on the PXE-enabled DP): the TS will use the boot image that's assigned to the task sequence (it will download that one and reboot into PE for a second time if the first boot image (see smspxe.log) does not
    match).
P.S. Please don't post another question for the exact same topic. Thanks.

  • Moving from Expressions Media2 to PSE8

I got M$ Expressions Media 2 for doing some beta testing for M$. I'm an amatuer photographer. It would appear that EM2 is a dead product or at least M$ is showing no signs of support. I want to move to PSE. Lightroom is really overkill for my needs. So has anyone made a move from EM or iview to PSE. Did you just recatalog everything?

Interesting -- I saw rumors last summer on the Microsoft forums about Expression Media being dropped. Have you read anything more recent?
I would recommend that you consider Lightroom over PSE, because the Lightroom library module appears much better supported than the PSE Organizer.   While the Organizer isn't dead yet, it sure looks like Adobe has put it on life support (very minimal life support):
    http://www.amazon.com/review/R332BXA5A70OL9/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
If you do decide to go with PSE:
In general, the only way to get photos and their metadata from another program into PSE is to make sure that all the metadata is written into the industry-standard EXIF fields of the photos and then import the photos using File > Get Photos And Video > From Files And Folders.   Since each program uses those EXIF fields a little differently, you may need to use a tool like Exiftool or ExiftoolGUI to copy data from one field to another in each photo (this may be the case with captions).
The best thing is to set up a test photo in Expression Media that has all the metadata fields you're interested in -- tags, date/time, caption, star rating, GPS/map location, etc.  Then import that photo into PSE and see which fields come through.
If you get stuck, I can probably help you if you attach a sample photo to a post here.

  • Import from Expression Media

I have a big library of pictures which I managed in Expression Media. Each picture goes through different stages like location tagged, people tagged, etc. Each such stage is represented by a particular color. Lightroom seems to have something similar. I imported some pictures for testing but I am missing:
    1) The 'stage' tags I mentioned above
    2) The location information (country, state, city, etc)
    3) Other location information (home, park, etc)
    4) List of people in the picture
Obviously, I don't want to do all this again as it was a LOT of work. So somehow I must be able to import the tags into Lightroom 3. Sync Metadata did not do anything. Any input is appreciated.

    1) The 'stage' tags I mentioned above
I don't exactly know what that means, but I guess you might use Labels for it. Or Smart collections, with little creativity: http://blog.ericscouten.com/2008/08/lightroom-2-technique-smart-collections-and-worklists/
    2) The location information (country, state, city, etc)
That would probably be IPTC location data.
    3) Other location information (home, park, etc)
    Maybe keywords?
    4) List of people in the picture
    Keywords I'd guess...
Sorry cannot help you with your problem, but I got one succestion: Manage old images with Expression Media and new ones with Lr. As need rises, migrate old images to Lr.
I'm not EM user, but I somehow guess that roots of your problem might lie there instead of Lr. Does EM write metadata to files? If not, then there is probably problem with migrating to Lr.
I also succest that you get Peter Kroghs The DAM book, which afaik also covers migrating from one DAM to another. Also, the DAM forum (http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php) might offer you some solutions, at least there are some experienced EM users, who might be able to help you on that side.
    Good luck.

  • Considering v2 purchase - large library size - switch from Expression Media

I have been using iView Media Pro (now Expression Media) for years. I prefer its method of referencing files instead of absorbing them into a library like iPhoto. Plus its interface is much more complex and useful than iPhoto.
On my latest Intel machines the Expression Media interface feels very clunky and slow. I just downloaded the latest Aperture v2 trial to see the improvements over v1. In playing around I tested referencing a few image folders. The testing folders of images on my harddisk occupy about 35MB. Strangely my Aperture trial library is 90MB!!! I imagine that Aperture saves thumbnails to speed preview but does anyone know how my library could be 3x as large as files it's referencing? In theory there should be no images in the library as I added the files without importing them so it should be small. This behavior baffles me. I have dug down into the Aperture Trial Library package and found the thumbnail file is about 80MB!!! Can that be right?
    Any thoughts?

Very informati've post bberenbaum. Personally I concur and emphasize two points: Apple players are primarily limited to Itunes and Cd's. There is a HUGE range of interesting music sites that this limitation excludes. And, as far as hard dri've size/space goes. The 5gigs that my micro has is WAY more than I need to carry around a months worth of music ( I add and subtract tracks on a monthly basis to rotate in new stuff so that I dont get tired of songs) but I did not forsee needing space for podcasts. Even though they are usually small bit rate files, the one's I subscribe to, This Week In Tech, The Dawn and Drew Show, etc, are always longer than 30 minutes. I currently have about 5 podcasts loaded up, and they consume a scary amount of space.
So my personal recommendations are: Buy a player that gives you access to a wide range of music sites and get way more disc/flash space than you think you will need. I find 5gigs just right.

  • What will happen when I remove controllers from mobility groups?

    Hi,
I'm wondering what exactly will happen when I remove a controller from a mobility group?
    1) Will it require a reboot? (I don't think so, nothing I've found says so)
    2) Will it deauth/reauth the AP's connected (I don't think so, nothing I've found says so)
    3) Will it do anything else goofy?
I have 2 RF groups spanning continents over low speed links. All that is transmitted over mobility groups is session data correct? Not usernames, not ??? What am I missing here? I'm banging my head against the wall because I can't figure out why someone would configure the system in this way.

  • Moving from Raw Shooter to Lightroom to Lightroom 2

Hi Folks: I have a problem. I used to use Raw Shooter fully paid up. When Adobe bought out Pixmantec I was sent Lightroom when it became available and I've happily used it for a year or so. I've had a hard disc crash and have almost everything backed up. But I don't have Program Files backed up so can't find how to get my licence number. When I download the upgrade to the latest Lightroom it asks for the old number. I don't actually know if I had one but the lightroom I was sent worked OK for the past year.
So, am I merely confused? Should I have had a number to use the previous Lightroom? I realize that I have to talk to Adobe directly but wondered if anyone has met this problem. Does, for example, Lightroom store the password anywhere I can retrieve it?
    Thanks, Donald

When the process was done to get your copy of LR you should have created an account with Adobe and registered the license there. Try going to Adobe dot com and login to your account and recover the license key through that source. Hope this helps.

  • Moving music files from windows media player to itunes

when I first got my ipod, only half of my music files moved from windows media player into itunes. Is there anyway I can import the rest of the music from windows media player into Itunes? I have tried using the import function and add file or folder to library and they do not seem to work!

iTunes will not accept Window Media player tracks that are protected. If you imported them off your own CDs, did you check the option to apply protection to them? If so, your only choice is to re-rip those CDs.

  • Moving from Windows to Mac

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and would like to move my iTunes music library from my Windows Vista machine to the MacBook Pro. What should I be prepared for? I thought it would be an easy matter of taking my iTunes library and copying it over to the MacBook Pro, and then pointing iTunes to that folder to find the music library. I've heard that there might be some compatability issues between what is currently installed on my iPod for Vista OS and what will be needed to read it from a MAc OS. Does anyone have any suggestions or information about making such a switch?
