What will I lose when upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I am relatively new to Macs and am concerned about what I will lost if we upgrade out Mac mini server from Tiger to leopard. There was a time when new Apple computers were not backward compatible, certainly Microsoft upgrades always have issues. Thus I have fear for performing an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard on our server without knowing what we are in for.
I looked at some of the discussion threads here and elsewhere. I see a lot of minutiae but none that would be an issue to me. Then again, no one seems to put out a publication (including/especially Apple) that say here are the possible drawbacks.
I guess our biggest concern in our existing data. Are there any types of document formats that we will no longer be able to read?
I assume Office, Photoshop and those types of programs will be fine as surely the publishers have issues the necessary updates. Is that correct?
Are there any mainstream issues that could come as a surprise to us and present serious problems?
Thank you,
Robert

I guess our biggest concern in our existing data. Are there any types of >>document formats that we will no longer be able to read?
Only if the applications which open those documents run in Classic.
And only if you do not have another program that can open them.
for example, Filemaker...I used FM5 (classic app)...OSX versions of FM were both overkill for my needs and cost prohibitive, so I never upgraded.
Lost access to all those files.
Fortunately, I was able to download a demo of FM9, open the files, export them to XLS format, then open them in either excel or numbers. Of course, lost the database functionality, embedded images were no longer there, and calculated fields failed, but at least the data fields converted.
The issue in photoshop, from what I understand, is saving to a network drive.
(possible file corruption)
Save locally, then copy to a network drive, and pshop should work fine.
Are you already on Intel, or are you on PPC? you may find some other quirks if you are also upgrading to an Intel based system.
Things like QT and browser plugins that are not Universal binaries.

  • Do I need to backup my files when upgrading from tiger to leopard?

Not sure if I need to backup all my files before upgrading from Tiger to Leopard (to use a Mac Box Set), have bought a Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Home hard drive to back up on. Was told I wouldn't need a WiFi router but have now discovered I would need a dual Ethernet port to be connected to the internet and the hard drive which my Mac mini only has access for one, either the internet or the hard drive. So I ask do I really need to back up before upgrading? or can you get dual Ethernet ports?

Only if your data has any value to you.
If everything works perfectly, you should lose nothing.
If anything goes wrong, it is possible to lose data.
Personally I don't want to trust my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up.
As to the question of dual ethernet ports, you don't need them actually. If you create a LAN with a router then the multiple ports on your router will allow you to connect to both the internet and disk at once.

  • Will my hard drive get wiped when upgrading from tiger to leopard?

hello, i have a dumb question... i bought a G5 about a year ago and i would like to upgrade to leopard. i've never upgraded before, seeing as how this is my 1st mac. i was wondering if it will wipe the hard drive when i install leopard?
i was going to buy an external hard drive to back up my files (and wanted time machine, but it's only compatible with leopard)... so i guess my questions are 1) will it wipe my hard drive when installing leopard? and 2) can anyone recommend a good external hard drive with LOTS of space?
    thanks!

    imegs,
When you install Leopard, you should be presented three options:
    1. Upgrade
    2. Archive and Install
    3. Erase and Install
Most folks will not recommend the Upgrade options...too many stories of 'things' not running properly after an upgrade (like filling most potholes on a road, rather than repaving the road).
The Archive and Install option will put a new installation of Leopard on your machine, while saving all your programs and settings. I recommend this option.
Erase and install does just that- it will erase your entire HD and then install Leopard on it. Do not use this option unless Archive and Install does not work
Which ever option you choose, I highly recommend getting an external HD (firewire preferred), and backup your data to it. I'd recommend downloading Carbon Copy Cloner, and making a bootable clone of your internal HD, so that if something really goes wrong, you can at least get back to where you began (like if the power fails during a portion of Leopard loading).
I've got a couple of Western Digital HDs, and they've been trouble free. One's a 250Gb, and the other's a 500Gb. Both have Firewire and USB connections... Pretty reasonably priced at Costco. You can back up your data to it, and then, when everything seems to be running to your satisfaction, you an erase the external, and turn it into your "Time Machine" HD.
    Hope this helps,
    Bob

  • What is a media kit - upgrading from Tiger to Leopard?

I appreciate that I am a bit behind the power curve but I have only just realised that I have to upgrade to Leopard if I am to extend the life of my trusty iBook G4! The problem is the only source of Leopard seems to be eBay - where reliable advice is conspicuously absent. Apart from expressing surprise that I cannot buy the upgrade disc from Apple, I would appreciate some advice from this forum.
What exactly are media kits? They are advertised new at about 16% of the going rate for a used installation disc on eBay. There is a suggestion that, if a licence number is available from a previous installation, they can be used to upgrade but I am a little sceptical.
Any advice gratefully received and apologies if this has been covered earlier - couldn't find it in a search.
    Dave

The "media kit' is a physical disk, but that's all.
In order to use it, you'd need a valid license, but the media kit doesn't include any license.
Media Kits are designed to be used by large installations - say you had 100 systems in your corporate network that you want to upgrade. You don't really need (or want) 100 Install DVDs so you might purchase a site license for 100 copies plus a media kit or two.
The site license is really the legal right to install and run a certain number of copies of the OS within an organization. You'd still need at least one copy of the install DVD, though, so that's where the Media Kit comes in - the physical package that's designed to be used in conjunction with a separate license agreement. It works out a lot cheaper to buy one Media Kit plus a 100-user license than it does to buy 100 single-user licenses.
The license agreement could also be a single-user copy of Mac OS X - for example, you lost or broke your install DVD and want a replacement. A Media Kit would also be valid there.
It isn't valid, though, as an upgrade from an earlier OS version.

  • Mail crashes when upgrading from tiger!

Whenever I start Mail it says it's going to upgrade all my mboxes. It then crashes. Which is great.
I really don't want to lose all my mail... and I can't even access it. Anyone know what I can do, or if I can get apple support to do something about it? Here's the report:

I am assuming you upgraded from Tiger to Leopard? What type of installation did you use?
    My suggestion would be to
1.) go to your home folder and MOVE the mailboxes to the desktop -
    • Home>Library>Mail
2.) Move "Mail" Folder to desktop
    3.) Reopen Mail.app
4.) Setup account settings with no existing mailboxes
    5.) Wait
    • Allow mailboxes to download or set up any existing mail from mail servers
6.) Take ALL accounts OFFLINE after mail is downloaded from servers - disable network activity before importing old mailboxes
    7.) Import OLD Mailboxes
    • File>Import Mailboxes...
    • Import data from "mac os x mailboxes" OR "mbox files"
    8.) Wait
    • It should be a few moments to load these depending on how much existing mail you have.
9.) If you have duplicates I highly reccomend using these apple scripts from aamann to resolve any additional issues:
    Apple Scripts:
    Add Addresses (Mail)
    * Add addresses found in the selected messages (in the header fields "From", "To", "Cc", "Bcc", and "Reply-To") to the Address Book. This is much more flexible than the "Add Sender to Address Book" available in Mail and provides a convenient way for creating mailing lists.
    Archive Messages (Mail)
    * Move messages from the selected mailbox(es) to an archive mailbox or export them to standard mbox, plain or rich text files for backup purposes or import into other applications. You can select to move all messages or only messages sent within or certain period as well filter messages based on their read and flagged status.
    Change SMTP Server (Mail)
    * Switch between different already defined SMTP servers or define a new one. This is especially useful if you are using your computer in more than one location and have to switch servers for several accounts at once.
    Create Rule (Mail)
    * Create a new rule based on the first of the selected messages. This saves you the trouble of copy/pasting address or other info between the message and the rule window and provides a much quicker way for setting up a rule with multiple criteria/actions.
    Remove Duplicates (Mail)
    * Locate all duplicate messages found in the selected mailbox(es) and move them to a separate mailbox for easy removal (duplicate matching is based on the unique message header "Message-Id").
    Schedule Delivery (Mail)
    * Allows you to send individual messages at predefined times (this script uses iCal for scheduling message delivery).
    Send all Drafts (Mail)
    * Immediately send all messages in the "Drafts" folders for all accounts. This saves you from having to open each draft in order to send it.
    Open Mailbox, Open Message (Mail)
    * Two small faceless scripts which will open mailboxes with new messages or the new messages themselves when run as a rule action.
    Filter Sent Messages (Mail)
    * Another faceless scripts which will apply your rules to the messages in the "Sent" mailbox.
    Export Addresses (Address Book)
    * Export addresses from the Address Book into tab-delimited text files. You can select which groups and which fields you want to export.
    Search Addresses (Address Book)
    * Find all addresses inside the Address Book matching one or more criteria. As opposed to the "Search" function built into the Address Book, this lets you search in any field as well as for empty and non-empty fields (Note: due to a bug in the Address Book's AppleScript implementation, "First Name" will always return a non-empty value for system versions of at least up to 10.3.2 - I have reported this bug to Apple and hope that they fix it with the next system update).
    * As an example, you might use this script to search for all phone numbers with a certain area code in order to update your contacts after an area code change.
    Good Luck,
    Hope this helps!

  • I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • Upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G?

can i upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G5?

Yes, however, read about the pitfalls below.
Mac OS X 10.5 was release October 26, 2007.  Its 10.5.8 update is the newest operating system available for PowerPC Macs that meet its requirements.  It is available occasionally by calling Apple online store's phone number, even though the website does not show it.  Many want to upgrade to Leopard because of i-Devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) bought saying iTunes 10 or later is recommended.  To check if that really is required, look at the i-Device requirements section of this tip
If your Mac is Intel, and running 10.4.11 or earlier, and meets the hardware requirements of 10.6, a less expensive upgrade solution is to upgrade to 10.6 directly.  No need to upgrade to 10.5 unless your software won't run in 10.6.
Software listed for Intel Mac and PowerPC Macs can run on 10.5 for the platform indicated in the link. For Leopard you need
867 Mhz on a single processor or faster (1 Ghz and higher are faster).
256 MB of RAM (preferably 512MB of more based on arbitrary experience).
9 GB of hard disk space (arbitrary experience adds another 15%) free.
Macs newer than August 28, 2009 can't run Leopard, and require a minimum of Snow Leopard.
Dual booting Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.5, check this tip:https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757
Classic is not compatible with 10.5.  10.4.11 on a PowerPC Mac or earlier is needed for Classic.
Mac OS X 10.5 is the earliest version of Mac OS X that will run iTunes 10.  This is necessary for numerous i-Devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPods).  To find out which require it, see this article
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
Should you require only iTunes 9, and are running a minimum of 10.4, backup your data at least twice, check in Apple menu -> About This Mac if you have a G3, G4, G5 (which is PowerPC), or Intel Core (which is Intel) make sure you are running 10.4.11 PowerPC or 10.4.11 Intel (depending on the aforementioned processors), and download iTunes 9.2.1.  The only reason you should upgrade to 10.5 is if some other software is required.
Boot Camp is only available on Intel Macs with 10.5 and higher.
Time Machine backup software first appeared in 10.5
You have several options of installation which are explained here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2209
All of which I recommend you backup your data at least twice before upgrading, and have sufficient disk space to install, and all your third party applications and drivers are known to be Leopard compatible, and after backing up your data you dismount and disconnect all but Apple keyboard and mouse and if there is an external display, that too. And just before you install repair permissions.
If any of the above terms confuse you, ask on the Discussions board what they mean, and one of the people who knows will gladly assist you.
You must use the installer disc that looks like *, and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM, if you choose to upgrade to Leopard.

  • Help upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I need to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard for Quickbooks 2009; can you point me to some resources that will walk me through the process (and point out any pitfalls)? Also is the product that outfits like Amazon or Buy.com are selling what I need to do the upgrade?
    Thanks.

    Hi ramonelkalsaw;
The only thing I would add it that while the upgrade process does claim that it will preserve things for you I would add that creating a bootable clone before starting the upgrade process is a good thing. It gives you an easy way to get back to where you were before you started very quickly just in case something goes wrong.

  • Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on and external (FireWire) drive...

    Hi all,
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed somewhere on the www but after several hours of research, I'm embarrassed to admit I'm ready to call it quits (unless someone more tech savvy than I can help <:o)
I've been running my OS on a WD 500GB FireWire for the past couple of years. Switched to it shortly after realizing that the 80GB HD on my MacBook was insufficient for my needs.
Now I'm getting ready to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and I've got some issues. Most importantly, when I launch the installer and it requires me to restart my system, I do so through both methods (holding down the "option" key to start up using the external HD and also by just allowing a normal boot under the old drive). In neither situation do I ever get the option to select where I'd like to install the new OS. In fact, when I allow the normal start without the "option" key being pressed, I don't even get to see the option to begin an installation. When I hold down the "option" key, I get the Mac OS X Install DVD screen (directory on the DVD), but it never gets to the point where I can start the installation.
I'm at a loss and getting a little frustrated (which has been my problem since I started with Macs--been a long time PC user and I'm always looking for the difficult way of doing things--so I'm probably just being PC-stupid as usual >;o)
Any assistance with getting me on the path to continued righteousness would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance!
    Ali T. Borahan
    http://www.alisails.com
PS: Despite the fact that I'm PC-literate and Mac-stupid, I've managed to convince almost a dozen people to switch to Mac, simply because I'm hooked and love how the Mac community sticks together and helps one another (and also because I can't stand the Microsoft kingdom!!! <:o)

Insert the Leopard DVD in the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the dark gray Apple logo appears on the screen. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.
When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your startup drive's entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Continue with the installation process until you reach the point where you must select a Target drive. Select your Target drive then click on the Options button in the lower left corner of the dialog.
Select the Archive and Install option.
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
Your target drive must have repaired OK when you repaired it. Otherwise do not continue.
You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Did you need to reinstall FCS after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard?

Need to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard mid FCP/Motion3 project and without FCS2 discs handy...I can't access them til after the project deadline.
I've read in a KB article that 'most' of the apps are ok after the upgrade-what's your experience?

Don't even think about it unless
#1 You MUST have a new OS to complete the project (i.e. new plug-in only works in 10.5)
    AND
#2 You'll have a lot of extra time on your hands to reinstall everything when FCS doesn't quite work the way you need it to.
Of course you're familiar with the recommendation to clone your system before ANY upgrade.

  • Lost emails upgrading from tiger to leopard

I lost emails (although mailbox folders are still there, just empty) after upgrading from tiger to leopard. Please help?!

I followed these instructions the last couple of times this happened to me. It works so well that I've made a text file with these instructions:
I got it to work by deleting all the values in the defaults database associated with Mail and the Junk rules. In my case I did the following:
Remove the Envelope Index file (~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index) from your user account.
    Launch Terminal.
Copy/Paste this list into the Terminal window.
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailBehaviorHasBeenConfigured
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailHeaderFlags
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailInfoPanelHasBeenShown
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkViewerAttributes
    defaults remove com.apple.mail LastTimeJunkWasVisited
    defaults remove com.apple.mail NumberOfMessagesMarkedAsJunk
    defaults remove com.apple.mail NumberOfMessagesMarkedAsNotJunk
    defaults remove com.apple.mail UseJunkMailHeaderFlags
Watch the rapid execution of the text commands in the Terminal window.
    Quit Terminal.
    Launch Mail.
Follow the onscreen guides to import your mail and watch the mail database restore itself.
All mailboxes, drafts, etc., should be quickly restored. Mail launches and quits correctly.
You will need to start updating the Junk filter in Leopard from scratch as new junk mail shows up.

  • Sent Mail folder empty after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    Writing for a friend:
This is for their PowerPC G5. Running OS 10.5. Mail - version 3.
When they upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (not an Erase and Install), their Sent Mail folder in Mail was empty of any sent mail.
However, I can see they have sent mail in their Home/Library/Mail folder.
How to I get Sent Mail in Mail to see this?
(Drag and drop does not seem to work. I tried to drag and drop one saved mail from the Home Library/Mail folder into the Sent Mail folder in Mail and it didn't take).
They have only one email account.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

    Lonnie, thanks
Mailbox behaviors set up exactly as you describe, "Store sent messages on server" is checked and "Delete" set "Never".
    Rebuild doesn't really help.
I use Kerio 6.0.6 mail server, with IMAP (143) for incoming and SMTP (25) for sending.
And it works already like four or five years without problems.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    Leo.

  • No 'Line input' option in sound prefs after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I have connected guitars and mics using Garageband 3 without a problem, until upgrading from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8.
I'm not getting sound from the guitar apart from feedback when I plug it in to the audio line-in port on my iMac G5.
I have read many of the questions and comments in the relevant forums all pointing to selecting the line-in option of the input tab in the sound preferences window.
I only have the 'internal mic' appearing in that window now.
I've checked that the cables are working correctly on a guitar amp and are fine.
So not sure why I don't get the 'Line-in' option anymore.
Are there any patches/updates to cure this problem, or would updating to Garageband 9 cure the problem?
    Thanks,
    Mick

Yes, checked the 'Audio MIDI Setup' utility and can select Line-in from there.
    All working fine now!
Thanks very much for your help.
    Mick

  • Upgrade from tiger to leopard on an Imac with no intel duo???

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from Tiger to Leopard to an iMac with no Intel Core Duo?
It's the third generation of iMac's right before the duo came out? I want to upgrade but not sure if it will work/

Absolutely! The only OS that needs intel is Snow Leopard, 10.6.xx You can certainly upgrade to the last iteration of Leopard [10.5.8.combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058com boupdate.html] without any problem. Just make sure you have maxed out your RAM.

  • Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard using Backup

I am upgrading from Tiger to Leopard and created a backup using Backup. Everything I've read so far online talks about using SuperDuper or TimeMachine for backing up. Should I use something else for my backup or will my backup work? Should I do a complete wipe or just the simple upgrade?

    See this from SuperDuper
