What will Windows Vista mean to Java Developers?

I just happened to read my first article on Vista today.
More specifically this awesome (and scathing) top 10 list by
Windows competetitors:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=195900152
It made me wonder, though itll take 2-3 years before we see
widespread adoption of Vista by anyone what does this mean for
Java developers?
Do you think the new graphics engine will mean cool new Swing
components?
Is Sun working on a new Windows JVM?
As David Girouard from google points out theres a huge uprising
in open source software, so anyway i think Java will become even
more relevant.
My number one curiosity!!!
Will Java be able to take advantage of this new Vista desktop Gadgets stuff?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_gadgets
I think that would be a great area for new Java development.
Really fun things could be made.
In researching it though it seems like a ripoff of Yahoo Widgets
which Wikipedia claims is a JavaScript engine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konfabulator
So though Java and JavaScript are hardly the same thing,
it seems like its been down and could be done better in Java ; )
If Gadgets is a Windows OS dependent thing it would be nice
to see Java support for it. THough i guess it would have to be
3rd party and not part of the core libraries.
Best Quote Ever: "Our friends up north spend over $5 billion a year on R&D, and yet these days all they seem to be able to do is to try to copy Google and Apple," CEO Steve Jobs said in August at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.
Ive seen a lot of lame trolls around lately. I figured a fun conversation is what the forums need lately ; )

It made me wonder, though itll take 2-3 years before we see
widespread adoption of Vista by anyone what does this mean for
Java developers? Not much. Java runs on almost anything, and also on Vista.
Java on Vista: Yes, it Works (Chet Haase's Blog)
Do you think the new graphics engine will mean cool new Swing
components?I'm sure that there will be people who'll write cool new Swing components.
Is Sun working on a new Windows JVM?Sun is working on a new JVM all the time! Java 6.0 is due to come out in December and they're already working on Java 7.0 also.
There's no need to write a completely new JVM for Vista, as the current version of the Windows JVM already runs on Vista.

Will Windows Vista work with Bootcamp 3.0.4 (325)?  the documentation says that I need a Win 7 installation disc.  I don't want windows 7; I want Windows Vista.
How do I install the drivers?

You don't provide any info regarding your computer but Vista is not supported by the newer Apple computers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410
You could use a VM like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox to install Vista.

  • Will windows vista 64-bit run on the Macbook pro 2.33 ghz newest one?

I am contemplating on whether or not I should buy the 64 bit version of windows vista ultimate for my macbook pro, and im not sure if my computer is 64 bit capable .. let alone know what that means. Do I even need the 64 bit version? how will it help me? and will it even work on my mac?! help greatly appreciated ...

Practically speaking I think it's a waste of money unless you use Windows all the time in which case I would wonder why you have a Mac. I assume you have a Mac because that's what you use. Having Windows capability is just an after-thought and not a necessity. At least that's the impression I get from your posts.
In some cases, yes, 64-bit software could be slower because there's twice as much information that needs be processed at one time. Not all 64-bit applications will run faster than 32-bit applications. There are presently not that many 64-bit applications available, and you will have to pay additional money to replace your 32-bit versions with 64-bit versions most likely.
Does it hurt? Of course not. Is it practical? Not really for the casual Windows needs of a Mac user.

  • Upgrading to Windows vista means itunes wont detect my ipod?? Help please.

Recently upgraded to windows Vista. Big whopdeedo.
But anyway, when I plug my ipod in, windows tries to update drivers for it, but of course failas horribly.
However, this is having a knock on effect that means itunes wont detect my ipod. So, while my ipod recharges, I cannot sync it. Thus I can't add new songs and what-not.
    Please help.

Yes my ipod is jailbroken, but this has never proved an issue before.
Its not just itunes that now wont recognise my ipod, my other software wont either, and they used to work with the jailbroken ipod.
This all started after i synced a nano, then connected my ipod and a screen came up saying ipod camera connected.
I click on the camera icon in mycomputer and properties tab then selected take no action in the events tab.
This hasnt resolved my issue, and the ipod still comes up as a camera in mycomputer, the only difference being im now not prompted to choose a program to view my photos with.
This is really getting up my nose, as for the second poster, sorry that article was no help at all.
    Please someone help me

  • Will Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade using Win 7 Enterprise Upgrade

My pc is currently running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit.  It was running 64 bit originally, but because of certain business applications that only ran on 32 bit, we had to downgrade to 32 bit.  By the time they got the programs updated, it was
too late (cost and time-wise) to return to 64 bit version.
I recently purchased Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit, because a Microsoft technical support person told me that Enterprise would be the upgrade to use.  When I recently read "Windows 7 Upgrade Paths" it appears this is not the case.  Will
I be able to upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Enterprise, as I was advised?  If not, then Microsoft just cost me a lot of money!!
    Thanks
    Dave

    Hello Dave,
Based on my research, Windows Vista Ultimate can’t upgrade to Windows 7 enterprise.
For more information, please take a look at the following article about Windows 7 upgrade path.
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(v=ws.10).aspx
Windows Vista Ultimate can only upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Please contact the support to check if you can return the Windows 7 enterprise. For more information about return, please take a look at the following article.

  • Will Windows Vista Work

Okay here is my problem, my desk top which ran off of Windows XP crashed. It's not worth fixing either. My laptop has Vista loaded on it, will my ipod work with Vista. I have heard a while back that it won't but need some go aheads from people who have Vista and it is working fine.

i'd be very careful about that. lots of people have had problems with ipods and vista, including failed ipods and crashes. but then again as you said , it has been ok in some cases. so its all up to you on that.

  • Boot camp windows vista

does anyone know if windows vista will run off of boot camp?

I think thats not correct. HP is selling there notebook with intel core duo and the say are VISTA CAPABLE .
    This is what they say
"What's a Windows Vista Capable PC?
The next generation Microsoft operating system—Microsoft Windows Vista—is coming soon. What will Windows Vista mean for you? It will offer new levels of ease, security and reliability, a new interface, and simple ways to organize and search for information on your PC.
We've worked with Microsoft to help ensure that the PC you buy today can run Windows Vista when it's available. All of our new notebook and desktop PCs will be able to run Windows Vista* when properly configured.
Windows Vista will be available in versions ranging from Windows Vista Home Basic for entry-level home users to Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Business, for those needing more robust features and functionality*.
*Not all Windows Vista features are available for use on all Windows Vista Capable PCs. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run the core experiences of Windows Vista, such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. Some features available in premium editions of Windows Vista—like the new Windows Aero user interface—require advanced or additional hardware. Check www.windowsvista.com/getready for details. "

  • Windows Vista product Key

Does anyone know how I can find out what my windows vista product key is. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop has worn off and it keeps saying that I need to enter it.

    Hello,
What is asking for the product key? Is it the operating system?
If it is the OS, what you need is the recovery disc, putting the product key will not work because the OS that was installed on the NB is already activated and it can't be activated anymore.
I think microsoft has a fix for this but they will charge you for the support.
It is better if you will just do the recovery so that you can reinstall the operating system..
    Hope this help.

  • Windows Vista & Parallels / BootCamp

So...I'm hesitant to even ask because I've read a few posts on here and seen some scary things.
1.A) Will Windows Vista run through Parallels?
1.B) Will Windows Vista run through BootCamp
    2) Does is actually run or is it just a joke?
    3) I have a MacBook because I love Apple but I am forced to use Windows. My Windows based Desktop just dies...is it worth it to buy Vista and run it on my MacBook?

    1.A) Yes
1.B) Yes, though drivers are not complete
    2) Via BootCamp it should be fine, via Parallels that depends on how good their addin tools are
    3) Are you unable to run XP for any reason?

  • I have a windows vista pc and want to use migration assistant to copy files over. From what I understand, it will copy over my user profile and settings as well. Is there anyway to just copy files?

Hey everyone, I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch (late 2011 model) and I want to use migration assistant to copy over my photos, iTunes library, documents, etc. I know this can be done wirelessly or by connecting the two computers by Ethernet cable (windows vista pc --> macbook pro). Which is faster?
I also have heard that using migration assistant copies over the user file as well and makes it the new one on the mac. I would only like to copy over files, not user settings. How do I do this?
    Thanks!
P.S. I'm assuming that when my iTunes library is copied, the mp3 files are copied too. Could someone please confirm this?

  • Windows Vista - iPod Nano charges, setup wizard will not start

    Help!
I have a new PC, and it's Windows Vista.
I have connected my iPod, and it has charged up, but the setup wizard has not come on?
How do I save music to my iPod? My PC recognises it as an iPOD, and I can drag and drop things into it as though it is a storage device. However, my iPod does not recognise this music or photo's when I turn it on and try to play stuff? There are no instructions in the box. It's brand new from argos! Never had one before, so don't know what to do.

    Sorry you are having problems.
Could it possibly be any security related software that is preventing this ?
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox#Windows
Make sure that you have an official copy of Firefox. Do a clean install BUT make sure you do not use any offer to remove personal data or you will destroy bookmarks and settings. If you have problems try to give the exact error messages so paste them into your reply of attach screen shots.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #'''Windows:'''
    #*C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #*C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These are difficult to recover unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Lets get Firefox installed then deal with any Java problem.

  • My itunes will not open in Windows Vista, I have tried everything suggested on the apple website, there is some type of plug-in issue..can someone please help me?

    Hello,
I need help! My itunes will not open in Windows Vista. I have tried everything suggested by the apple website. Even when I open itunes in safe mode, it still will not allow me to continue. I am assuming when it says something about Plug-ins that has something to do with the problem. Can anyone help me?

Thanks King_Penguin for taking time to read and reply.
I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago.  I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam.  I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by studios and different versions.  Could you please explain?
I checked my purchased list in my purchase history under my account and there are no hidden items.

  • Problems Installing Java Studio Enterprise 8.1 - Windows Vista

I am entirely new to the Java language and environment. I am trying to install the JSE 8.1. First I installed JDK 6.4 (jdk-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe), which seemed to go OK. Then I attempted to install the JSE (jstudio_ent81-ml-windows.exe).
First, it did not find a JRE and prompted me to specify, which I did (specified the java.exe within the JDK (Program Files/java/jdk1.6.0_04/bin). The installation continued for a while and then it tells me that "it cannot run the installer in graphical mode - check the DISPLAY environment variable". At this point is closes and that's the end of it. I see no trace of either the JDK nor the JSE in the Start/Programs folder.
Am I doing something wrong? Is Vista a non-starter?
    Thanks,
    Kevank

    Kevank,
Thank you for trying out Sun-sponsored Java developer tools. However in the case of Java Studio Enterprise (JSE) there are two issues here:
    1) JSE is not supported on the Windows Vista OS and probably will not run correctly even if it were installable, see http://developers.sun.com/jsenterprise/reference/docs/jse8_1/sjse_relnotes81.html and
    2) The latest Java developer tools technology is to be found in the free NetBeans 6.0 IDE at http://www.netbeans.org/ . It is strongly recommended, especially if you are a developer new to Java, that you start out using the NetBeans IDE, which is not only supported on Vista (see http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/60/relnotes.html#system_requirements ), but also contains the Java Enterprise application development features found in JSE, see http://www.netbeans.org/features/ .
If you have any questions on this please feel free to let us know on the forum.
