What wireless router should I buy?

Since I am having trouble with my old router trying to hook up to my cable modem (see my other post), I will need to get a new one.
I need to be able to connect 2 desktops with wires and 2 laptops wirelessly in the house.  Any suggestions?
-- Mike

You will need to tell us a little more info:
1)  what type of wireless adapters do you currently have in your laptops?  wireless b, g, or n?
2)  how will the wireless computers be used?  mainly web surfing?  gaming?  frequently transfering large files, such as video files?
3)  How big is house?  how many floors?  where will wireless router be located ? (ideally, if only one router is used, it would be centrally located on a middle or upper floor).
4)  What internet connection speed do you have now (or plan to get in the near future)?
5)  if you do not already have wireless n adapters in your computers, does your budget allow upgrading to wireless n adapters anytime soon?

  • Which wireless router should I buy?

After many hassles trying to get my 3 yr old speedtouch router to work reliably with my Macs I've decided it's time for an upgrade. Can I please get your wireless router recommendations for hassle free surfing on a Mac
    Many thanks
    David

When you want some router advice you need to be more specific.
A router does not include a DSL modem. So if your needing a box to replace a speedtouch then you need an ADSL router.
An ADSL router is a dsl modem and router combined.
You also don't specify who your isp is or what country your in.. This has some implications as if your in the UK for example some isp's use Annex M, ADSL2+ etc. Not all ADSL routers support these protocols and in the UK we use PPPoA IPoA and PPPoE. In other parts of the world only PPPoE is used.
So if you want an example of an all round box that works with 99% of the protocols it is the netgear DG834GT. However netgear now have a wireless N compatible router however I have not had any reports whether this box will work with apples wireless N. However in theory it should.
If you want a standard wireless router to use with an existing DSL modem then I would recommend the linksys wrt54G

  • What wireless device should I buy?

    I'm getting a new desktop and I need a wireless device. I connect to a WPA-encrypted 802.11g network.
Please don't point me to a wiki or some other site. I just need someone to post here that they bought *blank* wireless device and use WPA and it works perfectly.
I don't care if it's USB or PCI or Witch-Craft interface. I cannot stand the frustration of wireless internet in Linux. I want a card that will work with just the Arch 2008 core iso. If you withhold any information, you are a bad, bad person.
    Thank you!

As for me, you should use ASUS or NETGEAR cards.
I have no problems with them.
If there any problems with drivers installation you can use NDISWRAPER
But don't use D-LINK 'cause original schematic of impulse power suply is "unstable" and it can burn out
your card or AP. This caused by using btm-like components which are unstable on higher frequencies. (higher than 2 ghz and we have 2.4 ghz) And TP-link cards is "Chinese modified" D_LINK and it is more stable.
I think that the best way to power up your linux with wireless device is to use Atheros or Prism chipsets.
If you want "much powerfull" connection you should use Orinoco Gold card. This thing will blow up all the chanells.
There are nice Planet cards and AP's supported by wireless-ng. Why Planet?
Planet ARM's (CPU's) on AP's are about 166-233 mhz, but there are a lot of stuff on them.
And they've got much power - about 850 mW
As for me, if you don't whant to play with drivers you should use AP's.
Greatest AP that I've ever seen is Senao Deluxe. This series of AP's is about 1W of power!!! But there are some problems with their inner stuff.

  • What wireless router works with this OS?

i have bought 2 different routers that are not compatible with this OS...anyone know what wireless router i can buy that will work with OS X Mountain Lion?

"Cisco Connect" seems to be support software which Cicso may not have updated for Mountain Lion. (It's hard to tell from the Cisco forums.)
Supposedly, many of the functions on Cisco routers can be controlled through the web interface.
Support software aside, jdcastaldo is right that the actual routing and wifi functions should be independent of the operating system of the clients.

  • What wireless router would be good to use with OS 10 Lion at home?

I have a Mac Book Pro with Leapard and I just recently purchaced a iMac with Lion. I want to set up a wireless network with my provider, in my house. What wireless router should I use that is compatable with Lion OS?

Virtually any modern wireless router that has its latest Firmware updates should work fine.  I myself have been extremely pleased with my Apple Airport Extreme wireless router, but spending that much money is not necessary.
    Hope this helps

You can in fact buy what you want, no need to go with Apple TV
To connect (wirelessly) your Mac to the HDMI on the TV:
They range from $100 on up.

  • What Windows 8 Should i Buy for Bootcamp?

I do not have a windows OS of any kind installed on my mac. I would like to get windows 8 for my mac from amazon.co.uk .
Windows 8 Pro, Upgrade Edition [Upgrade from Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7] (PC)- this is the main one that pops up but its an upgrade??
When i search windows 8 on amazon.co.uk and on other sites the only products i see are upgrades from older versions, but i dont have any older versions of the Windows OS installed on my computer. So to cut a long story short, what windows 8 should i buy for bootcamp. Please could you provide a link, preferbly amazon or if not a UK website.
    Thanks.

Here are a few links I could find that are aparently the full install not an upgrade. I'd check with the seller to be sure though.

  • What size iphone should I buy?

What size Iphone should I buy?  I have a relatively small music library.  I anticipate takeing a lot of pictures and videos but assume those would ultimately get stored elsewhere (upload to the cloud)?  I would probably watch movies/videos on my ipad and would not store alot of documents on it?  What am I forgeting?
    Thanks
    Velo

IMO, forget the calcs and buy as much storage as you can afford.  Better to have and not need than need and not have.  Plus it will be worth more when you sell it.
Note that videos are not stored in iCloud and videos taken with the iPhone can be very big, hundreds to thousands of megabytes.

  • What firewire cable should I buy?

What firewire cable should I buy to connect my Macbook to my external drive Western Digital My Book Studio 500GB Quad Interface with Firewire 400/800? I am buying several of each for a new film class and I want to be sure to get the right equipment! (I'm confused about amounts of pins)
    Thanks for helping a novice!

There are two types of cables - FW800 and FW400. However, your MacBook does not support FW800 so all you need is the standard FW400 cable. It has six (6) pins.

  • What Netgear router can I buy to use with BT Infin...

I've always had Netgear routers in the past and have never had any issues with them, can someone please recommend a good Netgear router that will work with BT Infinity

  • What Backup drive should I buy

I am looking to purchase a backup drive. The size 2GB, I am considering the Apple wireless drive but should I look at any other manufacturer?
I am also going to use this drive initially to restore the erased data from my second internal drive. This also leads me to ask what recovery software should I consider.
    I would appreciate any feedback.

Many people on these forums use OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. IMHO that is all that I will buy, high quality and reasonable price. You can find them by clicking
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
As for what software, you should buy 2 of these drives. The first drive should use Apple's Time Machine, it's already built into OS X. The reason for a second drive is when it comes to backing up redundancy is very smart because backups can fail too. For drive two use a cloning app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • What wireless router is compatible with Mac OS X 10.8.1?

I just purchased a new cisco Linksys wireless router that is not compatible with OS X 10.8.1.  Which routers ARE compatible, besides the Apple AirPorts?

Your Linksys router should be compatible, however the firmware might need updating once you get online.
Your router will have an IP address in the ranges 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.-
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line - Its likely you have an ADSL service because if you have a cable service they provide a modem normally.
Now open your Web browser (Safari is the only one installed be default) . Type in the IP address and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Your router may need a firmware update LInksys units usually do but that is a different and long story for a separate thread.
Personal experiences with Linksys routers in the Mac evironment are not so good and they have tended to get hot lock up or fall over from time to time resulting a hard reboot being necessary.
To-date the very best and most stable performance has been with an Airport Extreme/Time capsule connected to a cable modem.
Regrettably you still need a separate modem to use this with ADSL services.
Shootist007 the fact that Apple use a separate full application (Actually two are available at the moment 5.6 for enterprice and 6.1 for home networking) gives direct control rather than relying on javascript and firmware errors.
    Its actually a better solution

  • What fan part should I buy - HP desktop

I have an HP Pavilion elite e9220y home premium.
    prod #  NY553AA
    windows 7; 64 bit
I think my fan is going; what part should I buy? does it have to be an HP part?
I posted a similar question yesterday, but the answer was regarding a hard drive! so I'm trying again....thanks so much....
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Before you try to replace the CPU fan, you really need to determine the source. You can turn off the computer. Then you can open the case, and lay the cabinet on its side. That will give you an open area to look down into.
    1) Visually inspect. Clean any dust globs on the blades. Using a can of compress air (never shake the can), blow away the dust bunnies.
    2) You said you'd go to a shop to replace the fan if needed.
    3) The CPU fan has to be measured. You'd have to shop the size and RPM/PWM specs. I have no source for a given CPU fan number.

  • What wireless router works for lion 10.7.3

I need info to for wireless router for lion 10.7.3 but bit air port one

Well, I've looked at AE too, but as I understand it, unlike most routers, Airport extreme doesn't contain a modem, so you'll still need a modem/router (since as far as I know you can't buy modems that aren't routers anymore, can you?) to connect Airport Extreme to the phone/DSL line.
This is the principle reason I haven't moved to AE, but I must admit it doesn't make sense to me why Apple wouldn't have put a modem in AE, too.

  • What type of wireless card should I buy?

Does anyone have suggestions on what type of wlan card I should buy for my MSI K8T Neo FSR Board? I currently have a D-Link DWL-G520, and it crashes the system, so I need something new. Thanks!

Quote from: bassmadrigal on 12-May-05, 04:09:05
I always seem to have problems with internal PCI cards from D-Link Netgear Linksys (the list goes on), but I have never ran into a problem with external cards. I currently use a linksys and my friend uses a D-Link. One benefit of going external is, obviously you can move it from computer to computer without a problem, also if you are getting a bad signal you can move it to a different spot. I have always felt that having a card in the back of your computer with all the electrical interference caused by the computer is something I don't want to deal with.
    Good Luck
    Jeremy
    It depends...
USB adapters can sometimes freeze up. I've had this problem with a Belkin 802.11b, and Motorola 802.11g adapters. I still think they are great because you can move the adapter around, and far from the PC, but PCI cards would be the most stable.
I think the ideal situation is a a/b/g PCMCIA card with a desktop pci adapter, so you can remove it for use with a laptop too. Also get a decent external antenna, and you'll want for nothing.
At least until 802.11n comes along....
