What would be an ideal labtop for my daughter to use for school, writing essays etc

I need help choosing the right labtop for my daughter's homework, she is always writing essays, she uses the computer at home but I want a labtop so she can do homework while away from home

I'd ask the parents of the other students and the teacher for recommendations. When I was in school we use to have to chase the dinosaurs out of the parking lot every morning.

  • What would be the price range for iphone 5c NZ dollers?

What would be the NZ dollers for the iphone 5c? i can not acsees the apple store for infomation:(

Just to confirm what stedman1 has said. At this time there are no prices confirmed for New Zealand.
Contract Plan prices for iPhones in the U.S. are irrelevant as its unlikely the prices in New Zealand would be just the American prices converted to NZ currency.
There are usually more factors to consider to get an accurate price. So its best to let Apple and/or the local carriers announce the prices.

If you have iOS 4.2.1, you have the latest and last version of iOS your 2nd-gen iPod touch will run, and that's probably the optimal version compared to older releases.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • What would be better a new iPhone 3gs or a used iPhone 4?

what would be better a new iPhone 3gs or a used iPhone 4? The iphone would be 2yrs old and belonged to my sister. I am weighing my iphone options, help!

I'm sorry I should have been more specific with the situation. I currently own an iPhone 3gs which is still under warranty, I am going to get a new one because I am having some issues with the phone. However, my sister offered me her old Iphone 4 if i want it. Now I am not sure whether I should take her 2 year old iphone 4 or just keep the 3gs I get from the apple store...???

There are two ways that should work. When you are in the trash folder, you can swipe on the email in the list - left to right - and a red Delete button should pop up. Or you can select - Edit - at the top of the list of messages and then select the message and tap delete.
Not sure exactly how this works - but if you have restrictions enabled - especially since you let your grandchild use the device - that may be restricting what you can do in the mail app. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions. If you have it set to on - turn it off or see if you have mail restricted.

  • So what would be the ideal tried and tested upgrade method?

I purchased Snow Leopard last week but have been hanging off upgrading as there have been mixed feedback about the upgrade. I guess curiosity is getting the better of me now so would like to know what is the most practical way of doing the upgrade? I'm also curious about the installation just to make sure that the installation disc is indeed working before I run out of time to return it if faulty as i've read a few posts where users have had this trouble.
Just now I have 10.5.8 installed and I use Logic Pro 8.0.2 and everything seems ticktyboo! but i'll be looking to upgrade Logic from version 8 to 9 in a few weeks so would like to get the OS updated prior to this (I'm holding off with installing Logic 9 until 9.0.1 is released due to various bug reports).
I have the following up to date backups of my system:
Time Machine backup on external drive
Bootable clone of Mac HD on external drive (Created with SuperDuper!)
The confusing part for me is that i've been looking at too many posts where the methods given have ranged from upgrade, erase & install, create a sandbox and a few others that I'm not even sure about. Would I be best doing the upgrade method then using migration assistant to migrate my applications over?
Like I said, it's not a necessity for me to upgrade just now but I just want to have a nose...
    Thanks in advance
    Bryan

So I took the plunge and went for the upgrade...
    and all is well
Being honest this was really quite simple to do and although I know there has been a lot of mixed feedback regarding the upgrade, I think this went effortlessly smooth and i've never done it before! I do have a bit of knowledge using computers but I can imagine that some folks who don't may have issues during the process.
In this case I would recommend everyone takes the time to do a little research here first before upgrading as I would say that there are probably a couple of things that should be done in preparation prior to the upgrade that isn't mentioned within the upgrade box set that the average user would not look into.
So here's a rundown of what I did for future reference (mostly advice already given in this post:
    1. Check all your software/apps are up to date and more importantly, check they are compatible with Snow Leopard
    2. Create a Time Machine backup of your hard drive prior to upgrading
    3. Create a bootable clone of your internal hard drive on a GUID partitioned drive prior to upgrading (I used Disc Utility for partitioning and SuperDuper for cloning) and check that it works by holding down "option" on startup of your mac and booting from the clone drive available
    4. Reboot your system on your internal hard drive
    5. Repair Disk Permission on your internal hard drive using Disk Utility
    6. Verify internal hard drive using Disk Utility
    7. Detach all non peripheral devices from your mac (external hard drives, audio interfaces, ipods, usb flash drives, cameras etc) prior to upgrading, leaving only your keyboard and mouse connected
    8. Insert the Snow Leopard installation disc
    9. Double click on "Install Mac OS X"
    10. Read through the "Read Me" document before you carry on
    11. Click on the "Customise" tab if you would like to add additional content (Quicktime 7 is located here and was already ticked when I checked)
    12. Proceed with the install
That was pretty much it! The installation took me 35 minutes, where the disc did it's stuff for about 20 minutes, then the mac shutdown and rebooted and carried on with the installation. Once It was complete a video clip came up (which I have no idea what it was for!) and I then clicked on finish (or something similar!) and then ejected the disc.
My desktop was exactly the same as it was in Leopard and I tried opening all my apps and they worked fine. I haven't given Logic a good look over yet but I loaded a project and everything was running great.
I've since done a new Time Machine backup and that worked as expected but will leave the clone drive on 10.5.8 for now incase of emergency...
So what the difference so far?
I think everyone will assume this when they do the upgrade but everything does seem to be running that little bit faster than it was in Leopard. One thing that definitely is quicker is going through the System Preferences, this seems really speedy compared to what it was like before. Expose seems quicker to me too and i've read that some people don't like the new layout but it seems practical to me! I've not really tried out the Expose from dock thing but to be honest I can't see me ever using it!
The only major thing that looks different to me (aside from the GUI tweaks) is that the screen now looks slightly darker. Not just the GUI but even within apps or browsing online. This may be a power saver thing, who knows? It may just be me...
So there you have it, one success story (so far) to put your mind at ease when you finally come to do the dirty work! Now id Snow Leopard could only make me produce some decent finished music projects.......

  • I have a desktop Mac OS X Leopard. I want to upgrade to Quicken 2007, Install Snow Leopard and download iLife '11. I heard that Quicken and Snow Leopard can clash and have problems.  What would be the best order for installing these products. Thank You.

I have a desktop MAC OSX Leopard. I want to upgrade to Quicken 2007, install Snow Leopard, download iLife'11.  I heard that Quicken and Snow Leopard can clash..........that is why I am upgrading Quicken. What would be the best order of installing these products.  I have gotten defferent opinions and I want to be sure I install them correctly.
    Thank You.

First, install OS X, then install your third-party software.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
      1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the
update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it.
Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've
          restarted.
      2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through
other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
      3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other
interruption occurs during  installation, use the standalone installer (see below)
from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation  is in progress do not use
          the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
          1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
          2. Restart the computer.
          3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
          4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
              logo appears.
          5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
          6. Follow instructions.
After installing Snow Leopard you should update it by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How much attached storage can a mac server handle? What would be the best suggestion for this?

Hello, hopefully I am in the correct location, if not, i apologize. Please bear with me as I am fairly new to MAC server. Here is my dillema. I have a mac graphics group that uses about 6TB of storage currently on a Windows server. We are running into issues such as permissions and searching inability. I was considering moving them to a mac server but will need to add storage to this. What would be recommended for such large disk space? We do currenlty have 2 mac mini servers and all the users are bound to AD as well. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

One of the Mac Mini Server boxes I deal with has 24 TB hanging off of the box (configured as RAID-6), plus a two-disk RAID-1 mirror set inside the box.   That's also a pretty small configuration, both in terms of its physical size and in terms of its storage capacity in the grand scheme of things.
A Mac Pro or Mac Pro Server will do 8 TB inside the box, plus a whole lot more outside the box either direct-attached storage (DAS) or via a Storage Area Network (SAN) configuration, but the performance of a Mac Pro Server is probably overkill for your needs, too.
As much as you are focusing on the capacity, you'll also want to look at how you'll archive and manage that much storage.   At how you'll manage and conduct backups of your data.
You'll also be looking at the speed and the design of your network, if you're moving large files around regularly.  Gigabit Ethernet does pretty well for small groups, but you may be looking for a different setup of that's not fast enough.

  • What would this $4.99 be for?

this is a bit crazy:  I went to use Skype for the first time and it asked me to approve $4.99.
I tried to use it without approval and it made me OK that expenditure.
What exactly is this $4.99 for?  Does it COST to make a call on Skype?
Seemed that I talked with my friend and the $4.99 did not get used.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Not sure.  What is it sitting there for?  I don't want to buy anything.
