What would cause DENSE_RANK not to take care of numerical "ties"?

Hi,
We're using Oracle 11.1.
I'm using an Analytic function to rank values in each "partition by" section.
Because there are numerical ties I'm using DENSE_RANK because it's supposed to take care of ties.
It's not.
The clause is simply
DENSE_RANK() OVER (PARTITION BY metric ORDER BY AEROBIC_EXERCISE)It's just data coming from a sub query where you can see what the order should be and it's not. Has anyone ever seen this before?
What am I leaving out?

Not nearly enough information. Post sample data, the result of your query and why you think it is wrong.
what are you soing differently than:
SQL> with t as (
  2    select 1 cat, 1 val from dual union all
  3    select 1, 1 from dual union all
  4    select 1, 3 from dual union all
  5    select 2, 1 from dual union all
  6    select 2, 2 from dual union all
  7    select 2, 2 from dual)
  8  select cat, val, dense_rank() over(partition by cat order by val) rnk
  9  from t;
       CAT        VAL        RNK
         1          1          1
         1          1          1
         1          3          2
         2          1          1
         2          2          2
         2          2          2and is my results what you would expect given the sampel data?
