What would you do? Fix or upgrade?

The logic board on my August 2008 MBP just gave up the ghost. Apple says they'll fix it (and everything else that might be broken) for $310 and provide a 90 day warranty. Here is what I'm trying to decide. Over the three years of applecare I've had the following fixed on my MBP:
New screen about 7 months ago
New hard drive about a year ago
New top case/keyboard about 1.5 years ago.
Current specs:
15" glossy, 2.4Ghz, 4GB Ram, 250GB HDD
I was happy with my system and don't need to upgrade to a whole new one, but the (very helpful) guy at the genius bar said I could buy a used MBP and put my hard drive in it and sell my current one for parts. If I could buy something for about $700 and sell mine for parts for about $300 I'm only out $400, similar to the repair cost, but a newer system.
The problem is that all the systems I'm looking at (MBP and MB) in that $700 price range have really similar specs to my current system. I can get a 13" 2009 Unibody MBP but the only real gain (that I can see) is faster BUS speed, bigger ram capacity and updated style.
So one thought is that if I do the repair then in a sense I've got a "new system" since so much has been replaced. I'm just not familiar enough with all the specs about generations that came out after mine to know what the smart move is.
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
Justin

From a major and popular computing device manufacturer's (who shall remain nameless) perspective (I've been in their stores several times so I know how they think) your machine is starting to fall off the charts.  Anything older than 2 years is going downhill; 4 years is mulling over retirement, 6 years is geriatric and you may be lucky to find somebody in the store who has seen a computer that age except maybe when they were 15 years old.
From my perspective (typing this on my 10 year old G4 with OSX 10.4) I think you have a spring chicken and if I had it I would see getting another 5 years out of it.
A lot of this depends upon your take on computers and what your needs are.  Some have to stay (by desire or true need) on the leading edge and wouldn't dream of keeping anything more than 3 years.  Me, I have never owned a computer any younger than 3 years!
One way to look at this is what is your financial and comfort limit with computers?  In 20 years of owning a Mac I spend an average of $100 a year on hardware (that's including external drives, RAM, printers, the computer itself) + maybe $30 on software.  Yes, that's meant I have lived with a lot of old Macs but I have not felt the need to rush out and get an iPad the minute they came out (I don't even have a cell phone yet).  So, for your $400 do you think you can get another 4 years of contented use with that computer? Do you feel the need to run out and get Mountain Lion the day it comes out? In that case you might need to upgrade RAM too and really think about a more powerful machine.
This may not have really answered your question but maybe it gives you a way to look at things.

  • Upgrading computer once a year, what would you do?

I upgrade computer once a year. What is the best option, considering performance and glitch free environment. Should i just do migration assitant in new computer or use time machine. Even better I think its better to start fresh and just copy data over and reinstall all the programs to avoid minor glitches and useless, corrupt plist being carried over to new computer. OR would you recommend migration assitant OR time machine? what would you do?
I don't mind reinstalling all the programs? I don't do file vault.
MOST IMPORTANT, ITUNES KEEPS FILE PATH FOR ITS PLAYLIST PRE LEOPARD, THEREFOR I CHOOSE SAME HOME DIRECTORY NAME SAY STEVE THEN COPY ITUNES FOLDER TO THE NEW MAC AND ITUNES UPDATE LIBRARY. What do you do to transfer itunes library?

Use Migration Manager. But do it the first time you boot the new Mac. Otherwise you will create a new Home folder and that will be problematic. Your iTunes will be transferred also.
Or, by hand ~/Music/iTunes and drag it over. You can also de-authorize and re-authorize to save an authorization, if you need it.

  • CS4 and consistent crashing...what would you advise?

    Hi,
I have recently installed Windows 7 32 bit and have been suffering significant crashing and instability with Premiere Pro CS4.
These issues occur consistently with 1 to 20 minutes of using the software...usually every 2-7 minutes.
Sometimes I receive the message: "The system is running very low on system memory"...followed by a crash some minutes later.
Sometimes I don't receive a message at all...Premiere Pro just instantly stops....sometimes a message.."Premiere Pro has encountered an error."
I previously used Premiere Pro CS2 on this same computer but with a Windows XP install...this worked very well and was stable (SD editing not HD)
I have tried a range of "fixes" but the problem still continues...
it seems to crash no matter what footage I use..or what I am doing.
    Fixes tried:
    Defrag of all HD's
Placing Scratch disks etc. on different drives.
    Turning off virus protection.
    Tweaking of memory settings
Updating to latest graphics driver available.
    Freeing up hard drive space
Running CS4 in Comptibility mode for Win XP Pro sp3
In summary Premiere Pro CS4 is very unstable on my system and I don't know what to do.
    My current system is:
Premiere Pro CS 4 version 4.2.1
    Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
    Version    6.1.7600 Build 7600
    System Model    P5K-E
    Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q6600  @ 2.40GHz, 2394 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    4.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory    3.25 GB
    Available Physical Memory    1.79 GB
    Total Virtual Memory    6.50 GB
    Graphics: NVIDIA 8800GT
    Hard Drives: (all 7200 RPM)
    Local Disk C: 1.81 TB (650GB Free)
    Disk E: 698 GB (34.4 GB Free)
    Disk F: 931 GB (41.5 GB free)
    Options I can think of:
1.) Format drive C and install Windows 7 64 Bit..reinstall just Premiere Pro and key drivers.
2.) Upgrade to CS5 and give up on Cs4.
3.) Build another computer and give up on my old system.
4.) Format drive and return to Windows XP Professional
5.) Install Premiere Pro CS2 again and give up on CS4.
    Any other clues?
    What would you do?
Which of these options should I try?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

  • What would you advise....

Upgrade time is here and I have been lurking on this forum watching for issues etc with the N97
Firstly, would you advise against me getting the phone? If so, what would you advise I replace my N95 8gb with?
Secondly, assuming the geek in me wins the argument and I get the N97, I was thinking the first thing to do would be a hard reset to get rid of the unwanted software and then an upgrade to the V11 firmware. Is this correct?
    Cheers in advance
    PP

There is a lot of confusion about this unwanted software issue on the N97. There is essentially 3 types of storage on the device:
The most obvious is the 32Gig of flash.. this is treated a bit like a USB disk.. Nokia don't put much on there and in some cases installing certain applications to this drive is not possbile. Further to this, when you use the phone in USB storage mode, the "drive" is disconnected from the phone and attached to the PC.. this means the phone has to close any applications that are running on the "e:" and looses its ability to read/write from there. This is a serious problem if you store your message repository on the e: as the phone will revert back to C: and you *may* loose all your messages
Then there is the z:. This is the ROM. and it is just that.. read-only.. If an application is installed there, you won't be able to remove it.. this goes for Quick Office and that boingo thing.. both are terrible apps.. You won't gain anything by removing them BUT there's the problem.. The boingo app is running all the time using RAM in the phone.. Since you can't disable it, it uses RAM rather than storage..
Lastly there's the c:.. this is flash that is always available to the phone. It is where your contacts, message, config, internet/browser cache and most things are stored by default. A bit like c:\windows on a PC.. So, Nokia in their infinite wisdom made it 70meg or so.. Brilliant.. I cannot stress how mind-blowing stupid that decision is and how it continues to ruin everyone's lives.
Many applications are installed on the c: by default. Why? because the 32Gig e: is not always available (see above about USB storage mode). When I transfered all my messages from my previous handset (using the sync thing) I was left with less than 5meg free..
This problem is NEVER going to be fixed.. there simply isn't enough storage on the phone to do this..
This is not the same as the low RAM problem.. the fact that, for example, you receive a text message or email with a hyper-link. you click open.. the web browser opens.. the phone runs out of memory and closes the messages app.. so now when you close the browser, the message app is also closed.. **bleep**?!?!?!?!?!?!
Nokia never fix their products.. ever.. anyone who claims they do is lying! Ok, that's harsh.. but..
In my experience (and I've owned many first gen Nokia products (7110, 7650, 770, 7710, 5800, N97) when Nokia sell a broken product, particularly if it is broken by design, they may release firmware fixes that update SOME stuff.. but they'll never fix most of them.. Instead they'll wait a few months and release a new product that doesn't suffer the same problems..
You'd think the N97 was fixing the problems with the 5800.. but the N97 is a very different beast.. It runs a different not entirely compatible version of S60.. They must know it was flawed from the start, though.. they introduced a Low memory set of features into S60 especially for N97.. Riiiight, Nokia.. you spent time and effort developing a way to handle low memory that actually isn't that good rather than just doubling the RAM in the phone.. how much is a 1Gig dimm these days?
This phone is terribly beta.. Even after v11 has been released it has a truely inconsistent look and feel.. You could get an N97, or you could wait for this fabled n97-mini there's recently been talk of.. or you could opt for a vendor that is trying to compete with Nokia in the smart phone market and so is actually making an effort to produce a phone that doesn't make their quality-assurance department look like kinder-garten nap time..
I've been disappointed with Nokia products before.. but NEVER so much as with the N97.. And in todays market are you going to pick a poor product in the hope that software may fix it later (bearing in mind it took over 3 weeks for Nokia to release the v11 firmware to all the phone versions.. that's right there are 100s of different versions of the N97) or are you going to opt for something the industry already accepts as a stable handset..
It's a shame.. I want to love it.. I've loved Symbian since its EPOC days.. but this phone is terrible in every aspect..
Quick office and Boingo.. that's a bit like bundling AOL and compuserv CD's with windows 95.. It feels that old!

  • Photo/Video editing PC build; what would you change and why?

I'm in the planning phase of my first photo/video editing PC build.  I've done quite a bit of research to this point, and I've finally come to a decision on all of the components (I think).  After seeing how helpful everyone is on this forum, I decided to post my plan and see what everyone thinks.
Miscellaneous info:  I am an amateur photographer looking to expand my horizons and venture into the video realm.  I will be running Windows 7 64bit with Adobe CS5 Production Premium and Lightroom 3 on a singe solid state drive and everything else will be on a 3 drive RAID 0 config.  Eventually I plan on purchasing a RAID card and a few more drives for a RAID 3 (or 5) config, but that won't be for a while.
    Ok, here's my planned build...

So, what would you change and why?
I'm looking forward to your responses!

"I'll take your advice and go with Samsung F3s.  With the money I save  (by not getting the WD Caviar Blacks), I'll add a 4th drive and use the  RAID5 on the mobo until I can afford to upgrade to a proper RAID  controller."
I might be a bit late, but wanted to let you know about motherboard software RAID configs (at least mine):
I have an older system running an ASUS P5AD2-E Premium MB containing a Silicon Image 3114 RAID chip. I originally configured a RAID 10 array with four 74 G Raptors for speed and redundancy. Figured if I lost a disc, I could just rebuid the array. Come to find out, the Sil 3114 chip does not support rebuilding the RAID 10 array.
I had lost a disc (disc was okay, just power to the disc was interupted) so was running on three. Fixed my power problem, went to rebuild the array and couldn't. So I figured what is the point of having a RAID 10 that I couldn't rebuild. Went to a RAID 0 with a backup disk.
Never checked the documentation to see if software RAID 5 through the SIl 3114 was rebuildable.
Mind you, I am not a computer guru nor all knowledgable about software/harware based RAID configs. But after talking to others who are the guru's, I found that I should stay away from the motherboard software RAID arrays and they mirror what Harm said about hardware RAID boards. But on a budget, the RAID 0 with a backup drive works for me.
Just my 2 cents to help.

  • If you traded in your mac mini for a windows pc, what would you get?

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and am just chafing to upgrade. It's slow as molasses.  But at the same time, I'm not willing to pay full price for 2012 model, and Apple is way behind in releasing an update. In fact I'm hearing speculation that Apple may be just discontinuing the Mac Mini.
I don't know... But I'm getting tired of waiting. And getting a different model of Mac doens't work for me, because I want to use my own screens. (I'm running two large screens in "portrait" mode.)
Also, I have a Windows 7 PC at work, and I've come to realize that I don't mind Windows 7 and don't see it as intrinsically better than the Apple OS. In fact Windows & has generally been mariginally more stable, and a lot faster then the OS on my Mac. In fact I got both systems around the same time and the Windows 7 system did better with less RAM and is "aging" better.
HOWEVER, what I really love about the Mac Mini is how QUIET it is. I have it in my bedroom, next to my bed, and it's noise is barely noticeable. So I guess I should look into seeing if there area any desktop PC's that are as quiet.
Have you considered switching back to a PC, and if you did what would you get?

I moved away from Apple in 2007 and have never looked back !
    I use the ASRock Vision X 420D  http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series%20(Haswell)/
Its the same size as the current Mini but a bit taller - BUT it is FULLY user upgradeable and about the same price once you make a mini upto the same spec.
I run Windows 8.1 on it and love it - yes there are lots of people bleating on about the 'metro' style of Win 8 but if you configure it (which has been a feature from launch, not a 3rd party hack) you never have to see the metro interface and you have a standard desktop.
As to woodmeister50 comment of : Also, with Win8, many third party add on companies have dropped support etc. is that not the same for Mavericks ?!

  • WHATS WOULD YOU SUGGEST ME

I installed the update Mavericks operating system and after that I lost iphoto and imovie. Because an application that I had already gone and is being charged in the App Store. this is absurd. I can not pay for a program that already had! What would you suggest me!

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1  application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • What would you say my gaming rig is worth?

I know this is a high level question but just throw a ball park figure at me.  This rig was built in 2010.  But has been upgraded several times.  It's a custom built gaming setup and I have had no hard ware issues what so ever as to date aside from a occasional format due to blue screen of death issues.
    It has:
    - A gaming case that has room for growth.  Not sure of the name.
    - First gen i7 processor
    - 8GB RAM
    - 120 GB SSD and 500 GB HD
    - RADEON 7800 HD Graphics card.
    - 1 24 inch LCD monitor and 1 24 inch IPS monitor.
    - Naga Razer gaming mouse.
At a rough estimate.  What would you expect to spend on a rig like this?  I am looking to sell this.

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
    NEXT...
Check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...
    Lion Tech Specs  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Lion Download code...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

  • What would you do first?

I've just bought 8GB of memory for my iMac to replace the original 4GB.
    I've also bought a 4-bay Drobo with 2x1.5TB drives, which I'll connect via FW800.
    I've also bought Snow Leopard.
    (It's my birthday on Friday).
My on-board 1TB hard disk is half-full, mainly with photographs and video files.
So, to my question: in what order would you install the above upgrades and why?

_I would backup all the data first._ Format the Drobo and do a manual copy of all data to it. When done, do random checks of some folders & files on the Drobo to verify that things were copied successfully. I would NOT use or rely on Time Machine to do this backup.
Then delete the original files from your internal (system) HD. Be sure to empty the trash after deleting the files/folders. If you really have consumed 500GB of your internal (system) HD with photos & video files, this action will free up a lot of space, improve disk performance, and net you a smoother upgrade to Snow Leopard and operation thereafter.
Then I would install the RAM. Make sure the machine runs ok before you do anything else.
Finally, upgrade to Snow Leopard. If it were me, I would do a complete erase & install. Of course that means you would also have to reinstall your apps. Imho that's a good thing because you will want to update/upgrade various apps to their Snow Leopard versions. If you are using any of the ProApps (Final Cut, Aperture, Logic) this is probably a must-do.

  • OT? What would you do?

I redid a site from asp to php. Part of that site includes a page that parses weather data and uploads it to the unix server to display current weather conditions.  Since moving it to a unix server, the degree symbol now is a ?.  The other data are fine.
The parsing is done by a third party software that works with the hardware mfg of the weather station.  It takes something like say:
    and turns it into:
I have talked with the software IT person and he claims the hosting company is using a different ascii set than normal for the degree symbol, providing a link to http://www.asciitable.com/ ,
I have talked with the hosting company (Network Solutions) and they say "I apologize that we’re unable to directly support or troubleshoot custom scripting on your website.   I recommend consulting with the software developer or site that provided the code to you to correct the display issue."
So I'm pretty much stuck in the middle here.  The site's page gets a lot of attention as the weather station is on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and gets some unusual readings compared to in the city.  It's used by both the National Weather Service and two large television stations in the state so I'd like it to be fixed if possible.  The data readings are fine, but the ? is distracting.
So I'm curious, what would you do in this situation?

haha - most likey #2, to be sure.

  • What would you buy if you would you have to return...

2 days ago my N97 stopped working, I had to turned off for some reason, and  when I turned it on the screen was frozen. (Nokia logo)
I was so afraid of sending my phone out for repair, with the possibility of getting a new N97 and lose all my apps from the OVI store + all the information that I have on my phone.    lucky me, after attemping 10 more times, my phone worked.
It came through my mind the possibility of getting a new phone, but wich one?, Iphone, HTC, Omnia, Android phone? Lets face it,  there is no phone in the market with all the capabilities than the N97 has. No phone gets even closer:
    - Memory capacity
    - FM transmiter
    - Widgets
    - FM Radio
    - Great resolution when you watch movies
    - 5MP camera
    - REAL MULTITASK phone ( over 8 apps open and no issues at all )
    - etc
This morning I updated my phone to the new firmware (2.0XXX), IMHO I would say the firmware is not a mayor improvement, still some bugs to be fixed but, it runs a bit faster. C memory still the same and some other stuff that we all know the phone still has. So, What would you buy, if you have to return your N97?
For me, maybe I will switch to Android OS when my N97 gets obsolete.

Anything new with WINmo 6.5 or some of the new Android phones coming out:
    - Memory capacity - N97 has NO MEMORY, the MINI has double the RAM.  Think about that!
    - FM transmiter - Works at a range of 2 feet - a cable would be better anyway into the car stereo
    - Widgets - are you kidding me?????
    - FM Radio - yeah sure that is good, but whatever
    - Great resolution when you watch movies - no h264 on the n97 mate, sure most other phones do this fine, my HP Ipaq from 2001 plays more movies than the n97 (it has skype as well!!)
    - 5MP camera - yeah until it is scratched
-REAL MULTITASK phone - WINmo can do it, Android can do it, even the pre can do it....
I feel hooped for getting the N97, everything is there, but nothing works as it should.  Thankfully since this AM i dont have any out of memory errors, but I am sure they will return just when I don't need them to.
At this point anything is better - to be honest, I've had my eyes on the n900 - but unless Nokia fixes my n97, i wont throw them another dime so long as I live, nor will I allow the 30 people i have sent Nokias way to get another one.
    Fix.  My.  Phone.
I love my purple screen, 1/2 day battery, sketchy touch screen and $800 price tag - I call it my Lumia 900

  • What would you do with this system and very little geekness?

I am a student and I have a $1000 budget to upgrade my Dell Precision T5400. What would you do?
Here is what the computer has now. It's 300gb only one harddrive is red-lining, almost full.
I want to run Premiere Pro CS5 and AfterEffects. Those are the classes I want to take.
Although as soon as CS6 shows, I will upgrade to that.
    Windows Vista 64bit
    Dell Precision, T5400 Mini-Tower Quad Core Xeon Proc E5420, 2.50GHZ, 2x6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz
nVidia Quadro FX1700 512mb dual DVI Graphics Card
    320GB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200RPM HardDrive with 8MB DataBurst Cache, Dell Precision T7400/5400
C1 All SATA Hard Drive Non-Raid for 1 hard drive
Mini-Tower chassis configuration, Dell Precision T3400
I am trying to decide to go buy another computer ($3000 budget for that) or try to upgrade
this one ($1000 budget for that).
What is good here and what needs replacing? I have never built a system.

I agree with some of the above comments, but not all.
First, 24GB of RAM is a nice luxury option, but it's not the minimum for AE - come on RJL you know better than to say that. 16 would be more than enough for a student project. I run a business, and it's more than enough for me. 16GB is affordable. It's about $150.00 max.
The Quadro card is over priced, and undervalued. Something like the Nvidia GTX570, 580,590 starting at about $335.00 is Adobe Authorized, and lots of performance.
Now, I'm running a 6 core AMD, but most people will tell you an Intel system is better. According to the benchmark, it seems correct. Get a nice i7 chip. What ever you can afford.
Motherboard. Look to spend in the $220 range. Gigybyte makes a nice one, so does Asus.
Hard drives, one of the better things you need to consider. A 2-4 disk RAID 0 - say 4X1TB, or if that's too much $$ then 4X500GB for less than $400 would be your best investment with a 500GB system drive.
Case count on $100 with enough fans, card reader,
    DVD burner $70.00etc.
So, if you looked at it my way. Here is your parts list from Newegg. You will toss another $100 or so in cables and fans, etc.

You can upgrade your current operating system to atleast windows 7 - 64 bit home. You could even choose to use the DVD drive out of your existing computer.
Someone in your rea will build a system like this for you for somewhere around $125.00 if you can't do it, but looking on YouTube can give you a step by step.
    I trust this helps.
    Goodluck

  • One Accesspoint and two server...what would you suggest?

    Hello!
I'm developing an application which handles two wireless barcodereaders. There are two computers, and one of them is connected with the accesspoint.
The communication to and from the accesspoint is managed with an COM Component, which is used from Java.
The barcodescanners should interact with my application , for excample if the salesman scanns a customer-ticket, the customers data should be displayed on the screen. The barcodereaders can be identified with an uniqu id, so it's no problem to know where the data came from.
But my problem is...I'm getting all of the events to the computer which is connected with the accesspoint....
How do I tell the other computer to display the customers data which have been scanned with the other barcodereader?
How can I get the event handled on the other computer???
Sockets would be a possible way, but I think that might get very complex - than i thought i could call with RMI a fireEvent Method on the 2nd computer...!?!
What would you do to solve this problem?
I'd be happy for your help!
    Greetings Martin G.

Nobody out there who knows how to solve this problem?
My main problem is how to get events which occure on on computer handled on the other computer!?!
I'd be very happy for your help
    Greetings Martin G.
