What year/ model is my mac pro? serial ends with 6R0GP

Hello Geniuses,
I have spent hours trying to find the year and or model of my Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.
The search is not for the faint of heart.  I running Lion and want to know if I can upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I had a similar experience trying to figure out my "kernel" to see if I could run Logic at 64 bit.  I fianlly just tried it and it worked beautifully.  I don't think downloading a new OS to "find out" would be a good idea .  I've found many "theories" from users who do not have my set up.  Please consider that the model and year does not show up on my "about this mac" pop up menu.  Just my processor, memory, graphic, serial number and software. I found one article that had a link to "Tech Specs" that must have been changed. I could not find where I could enter my serial number to search this info. There are several articles out there that state other wise.  It's not greyed out. It's not there.  I've looked under all hardware.  Where is the year and model hiding?
Thank you for reading

Thank You Hatter and everyone,
my hardware header simply states "Mac Pro"
I believe I may have replaced the ram in order to have matching sets when beefed up.
Here's what I can tell you:
Mac OSX 10.7.5
Processor 2 x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB
Model Name:                              Mac Pro
Model Identifier:                        MacPro2,1
Processor Name:                      Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:                     3 GHz
Number of Processors:             2
Total Number of Cores:             8
L2 Cache (per Processor):         8 MB
Memory:                                   16 GB
  Bus Speed:                               1.33 GHz
  Boot ROM Version:                   MP21.007F.B08
  SMC Version (system):              1.15f3
Serial Number (system):            ending with 6R0GP
    Hardware UUID:           00000000-0000-1000-8000-001D4F4574B8
So yes, it's a Mac Pro2,1
I could have sworn that  I found an article years ago when I was trying to run Logic 9 as 64 bit - that showed my Kenel was 64 - I was unable to find it later.   I am clearly not as informed as you. How and where do I find if I have EF 132 or EF164 ?
I found another thread where people with notebooks ugraded their main hard drive to a larger size and they were allowed to upgrade/ download to Mountain Lion.  I was hoping to upgrade in order to use the new Logic X.  Whatever I have, it works great with Logic 9 running in 64, but I end up using another software when I have a lot of tracks. I am quite amazed as to what Logic 10 is capable.  If ML is a pipe dream, then I better start saving my money.

My Mac PRO (serial number    <edited by host>) has installed OS X Lion 10.7.5. Can I update it to OS Mountain Lion to work Airplay with apple TV?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The serial number doesn't tell us anything. Open  > About this Mac > More Info, and tell us the first two lines of the window, where you should see MacBook Pro and a line below, which indicates the model you have:
That's what I see on my Mac. AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so if you see Early 2011 MacBook Pro or newer in that line, you can use AirPlay Mirroring. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If you want to upgrade, make a backup of your files and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Then, open the Mac App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will appear, so follow the steps. After upgrading, you will see the AirPlay icon on the menu bar.
If you don't want to upgrade, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot

  • I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system.  Restored drive from backup.  Now logon password doesn't work.  Account password still works.  Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
    SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

  • My Mac Pro (Late 2013) with an Apple SSD as the only storage will not restart

I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) with an APPLE SSD SM0256F as the only storage.  When I restart all I get is the spinning bars. I have to manually hold the power button down to force shutdown. I have let it try to restart for as long as 30 minutes. It will start just fine from a shutdown.  I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1510). I have used Disk Utility with no errors. The only time I need to restart is after a system upgrade. I have tried, as others have suggested, selecting the drive from the Startup Drive preferences with no difference. Any help is much appreciated!

  • How fast does the mac pro run xp with 3d apps

Hi all am planing to upgrade to a mac pro, but am not sure how it will run xp and some animations softwares on the xp side,
i was just wondering if any one knows the speed and fast the mac pro can render with 3d max mental ray. and the problems it will encounter when running xp.

If your plan is to run XP with 3D, why not BYO and go after an Intel X58 Core i7.
Otherwise, keep your eye on Apple Specials (ref'd) units.

  • Does my new mac pro retina come with antivirus. And, for how long

does my new mac pro retina come with antivirus? And, for how long?

    Yes it does.
It's called OS X Lion - fully updated.
There are no known viruses for MAC OS.
Your current OS is your best protection
If however, you want to feel more secured, download ClamX AV and do a scan once a week to give you peace of mind.

  • How to find out what year model my Mac Mini

I got a "message" dialog on screen from Apple telling me OSX Mavericks is available for free. The system requirements say my Mac Mini needs to be an "early 2009 or newer" model. I got my Mini at the Apple store in town in 2010, but for all I remember now (not much) it could have been an older model than 2009. How do I determine if my Mac Mini is a 2009 or later model? (The "About this Mac" info doesn't have anything I can interpret that indicates what year my Mini was manufactured.)
I assume Apple "has my number" and this upgrade announcement wouldn't show up on its own without software update determining (outside my view/knowledge) that my Mini is "new" enough, but is there ANY info in that "About" screen that identifies the model by year? Hidden in one of the strings of numbers and letters, maybe?
Is it concerning that Software Update didn't list Mavericks as available for my Mac? It does newly list the migration assistant upgrade to help with Snow Leopard (installed) to Mavericks. But is it worth dl-ing for hours tonight if I only have 2 gb of ram and don't know for sure if my 'puter is new enough?
*I was under the impression, since I bought this machine, that OSX 10.6.8 was the "highest" operating system the Mini could support. Has that changed?

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

  • Upgrading? 3 year-old Mac Pro 3.1 with 8 GB RAM

I have a 3-year old Mac Pro (model 3.1) with 8 GB RAM and 2 Quad Core Intel Xeon processors. The RAM consists of 8 x 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Two questions:
    1) I need tp upgrade my RAM to 16 GB or more to run a new software (memory intensive application). I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade this system for ~$500 or just buy a new system with newer components. Also, whether the system can effectively use 16 GB of memory
    2) Recently my Mac Pro has been very slow and jittery e.g. when I switch between applications.  I've already tried things like cleaning up the hard drive / repairing disk permissions with little improvement. The only other thing I can think of doing is wiping the system clean and reinstalling everything. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and if there is asomething to do to prevent this from happening in the future.
    Thanks!
    -H

you can max out at 32GB
An SSD can make a difference also
Hang in for what/when/if the MacPro6,1
    Memory bandwidth OWC
I would add 4 x 4GB to get to 20GB and see how that goes.
Upgrade the hard drive: SSD or 10K WD VR 600GB or something.
Off load your home media data and such to another drive, and go for a lean-mean OS/Apps only boot drive.

  • What is needed in a Mac Pro to start developing APPs?

I am looking for information on what Mac Pro (processor speed, memory, and storage capacity) is needed to start developing APPs.  In addition, I would like my Mac Pro be viable for the next three years as I learn how to use the system to build APPs and learn basic applications to build APPs as I anticipating changes in the iOS system and programs like Mountain Lion that could use more memory and storage capacity.  I am beginning this journey and like to know what system would best fit my needs as Apple continues to progress in their technologies.  What should I get in a Mac Pro with 8GB or 16GB, i5 or i7 processor, 256GB or 512GB storage, and 13 in. 2.8GHz or 15 in. 2.5 GHz?
    Thank You

You could buy a new MacBook Air every two years and still come out ahead of what a base Mac Pro costs.
A Mac Pro is not going to go out of style in 4 years.
laptops or their parts are not upgradeable and do tend to fail a bit more. And some of those systems limit you to 16GB RAM but they do have (slower) M.2 SSDs (400 or 700MB/sec vs 1200-1400MB/sec) SSD blades.
If you want to run lots of code and VMs then maybe by accident you are in the right place

  • What connector for replacement superdrive - Mac Pro early 2008?

I have the 2.8 Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with the notoriously crap "super"drive. Naturally it failed when I wanted to install Snow Leopard. I want to replace it - solely for the purpose of this install - but for the life of me I cannot find what type of connector I need in a replacement drive. About this Mac says the optical drive "Interconnect" is ATAPI. ***? I think that means it's IDE, or EIDE, whatever the **** those are. Can anyone advise me on this? And perhaps what replacement to buy? Many thanks!

ATAPI and EIDE and IDE are essentailly the same for this purpose, and are talking about a 40-pin ribbon cable connector and a four-pin Molex power connector. Macsales.com can usually provide what you want.
The 2008 model used that same connector, but there is a Hedge inside on the motherboard nearby. Folks call these the ODD connectors (for Oprical Disk Drive) and they are two uncommitted SATA data-only connectors that can be accessed if you wnat to bad enough. Macsales sells a kit for this purpose.

  • Mac Pro Serial Number Not Detected

For Some Reason My Mac Pro Early 2008 doesn't have a serial number in its system info. This is a image of the system information.
As You Can see the serial number isn't available. By the way this Mac Pro was bought on Ebay so I am not 100% sure that the previous owner didn't tamper
with the inside components such as the logic board. I have tried to get the serial number back but it never works so I need to see if anyone else has this issue or is able to fix it. The issue also isn't with Yosemite because on Mavericks it didn't show either. Me myself didn't preform any upgrades to it either accept the fact that I put a 80gb external hard disk into the mac pro. The NVIDIA graphics card and the 6 gb of ram came with the computer. As I have heard about similar issues to this I
believe this issue happens when the logic board is upgraded or something like that. I hope that someone can get to me soon and maybe help me figure this out.

As long as there are no reports of this unit being stolen, and you can show that you bought it, and they can research the old numbers, they should be able to give you a serial number. The genius Bar may be able to do it.
I doubt if the software to do it is available anywhere, and if it is, it's stolen property of Apple.

  • Mac Pro serial ports?

I just bought a new Mac Pro Desktop (bye bye Windows).
I noticed there aren't any serial ports - and I'm imagining there is some clever way to facilitate it with the Pro desktop. I have a couple of serial consoles and such that I need to connect to on a semi-regular basis.
Could someone point me in the right direction. Thanks.

You can find cards at a lot of online stores like NewEgg, but I have no idea if they will work with OS X. If the card requires a driver, then you may have difficulty finding one with OS X compatible drivers.
You might post your question in the Mac Pro forum. Perhaps you will have luck there. This is not the best forum for your question.
