'Whats App web' email virus trojan sends to all Gmail address book

My wife received an email on her iPhone 5, which is set up to work with her Gmail Account from a friend. It appeared to be a message from Whats App (it wasn't) and said 'You Have New Messages' and had a clickable '>Play' link.
This then directed to a sales website but more annoyingly ran some kind of program via Mail on the iPhone and accessed all her Gmail contacts and sent itself to them (over 600) with random subject headers.
As soon as I found out I changed the password on Gmail and it seems to be OK, although Gmail bounced one of MY Gmail emails sent last night due to it coming from an IP Address associated with Spam!
Very annoyed and wonder how a simple click link can do so much - is the Gmail contact list accessable withourt the user's password?
Also I thought the iPhone ecosystem was pretty closed off to this kind of thing...

Hi.  I had this too and I clicked on my iPhone before I had thought it through.  Easy mistake.  My query is that my gmail account through which I got the phishing request has a 2-step security process requiring me to enter a 6 digit code before I can get into my own gmails. Different each time and I know, a bit of a pain.  However, I'm thinking that this additional security bind might actually have saved me?  Am I right?  I'll change my password anyway but I'm wondering if this 2-step security thing with Gmail is a good thing after all.  Please could somebody advise..

  • My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts, how can I stop this activity

My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts.

    First of all
Run windows in safe mode (with network) and change your password on your email account.
    Then
run several anti-malware programs (there are many free ones, but not all are trustworthy)
    Malwarebyte >> http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    Microsoft Safety Scanner >> http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
    Windows Defender >> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-defender
    Spybot >> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
    Kasperky >> http://www.kaspersky.com/security-scan
    Rootkit scanner TDSS-Killer >> http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
And when all is clean, change password for your email account again.

  • How do I assign a particular email account of mine to a particular Address-Book contact?

I have a few email accounts. I am also on several 'Email Lists'.
when I am reading an email from one of the "Lists" and I want to reply, then I'd like Thunderbird to use the correct email account to match the contact in the address book which is associated with the Email List.
So how do I assign a particular email account of mine to a particular Address-Book contact?

    Thank you for the reply.
    Thunderbird may do that. Somewhere.
However, as I test this theory, in my own "Local Folders" area, in all cases, when I hit 'Reply' or reply-all, Thunderbird uses the 'Default' email account of the program Thunderbird, for want of a better description.
Recall that each incoming Email is filtered as to some criteria then placed in appropriate "Local Folders" named folder.

  • When I send an email my contacts are changed in my Address Book on both my Mac and  iPhone4.

All my contacts are entered only in the first name space. ie John Smith is entered as John Smith in just the first name entry space - I don't use the last name space at all. When I send an email, that person's address gets changed immediately my address book which duplicates the first name into the last name space. I have tried deleting all my contacts and resynching them from my iPhone but the problem persists. Can anyone help me fix this?
I am running an iMac with Lion and my mail client is Mail. My ISP is gmail.

Double check your contacts email, and if its incorrect, go to their contact and change it and save it or you can delete the email you put in, and manually type it in.
    Hope this helps.

  • Email-only contacts become merged/corrupted in address book

I have many contacts in address book. Most of them have some combination of phone number, first name, last name, notes, email address, etc. Some of my contacts have all fields blank except the email address field.
I have some groups in address book that are mostly email address-only contacts, for example a group full of listserv addresses.
Recently I have noticed that somehow these email-only contact groups are being corrupted so that extra addresses are slowly being added to each contact, seemingly from the next contact in the list. How bizarre.
So, for example if I have a contact card with no name, phone, etc., just the address "[email protected]", and the next card in the group is "[email protected]" somehow after awhile when i open the first contact, it suddenly has 2 email addresses listed, jsmith, and psmith! How does this happen?
The corruption seems to coincide with syncing with the iPhone. Perhaps it has something to do with how syncservices handles email-only addresses when it syncs back and forth with the iphone?
Anybody else having this problem? I believe it is new to Leopard but maybe not.

If a contact card within a group has multiple emails, how can I get Mail to automatically send an email to both email addresses when sending to that group?
the only way to do that is to duplicate the address card for this contact and add it to a group twice. then control-click on the group in AB and select "edit distribution list". it will let you select which address to use for each individual contact in the group.
(e.g. Bob Jones has two emails: [email protected] and [email protected] I have both emails in his contact card in Address Book. Bob's card is in my group entitled "Friends." When composing a message in Mail.app, I type "Friends" so that it will automatically include all of my contacts in my Friends group. Currently, Mail only adds the first email listed for Bob. How do I get it to add both of Bob's emails?)

  • How to send to all contact addresses in a group?

I see similar questions with no answers! I do large group mailings, 100 in each group. I didn’t realize that Mail only sends to one address for each contact, but some of my contacts are husbands and wives with two addresses. Any way to get Mail to send to all addresses of each contact?

This is useful for any group involving kids or families.
I know. That's one of the possibilities I was considering, and the right way to solve that problem would be to have a card for each member of the family, i.e. if each member of the family has his/her own email, he/she should have his/her own card as well.
The problem arises when you want to trick Address Book into doing something it's not been designed to do, namely to treat each address within the same card as an independent entity. They aren't, and the only way to promote them into that condition is by giving them their own card, which is what Allan's workaround does. I still don't consider that a solution, as having multiple copies of each contact wouldn't be acceptable to me, but if it's acceptable to the OP, it works.

  • Mail sending from wrong gmail address

I have multiple gmail addresses that I send from: one for work and one for personal. The email addresses are very similar, but for an additional ".am" suffix on the username of the work account. When I want to send an email from my work account I switch the "from" field to my work address, but it still gets sent from my personal address. The only workaround I've found is to force the work address into my "reply to" field. This still has the mail coming from the wrong account, but at least responses to the mail go in the right account. I do not have this problem when sending mail from other domains, nor do I have this problem when sending from my iPhone. I have my Gmail accounts set up with identical POP settings.

Yes, this is the "Mail and Address Book" forum after all!

Start Mail, go to Preferences / Accounts.
For each account set the Outgoing server to be smtp.gmail.com:XXXXX - XXXXX being the user name you want send from.
    Tick: Use only this server.
Now you should be a happy camper.
I tried that. It causes my outgoing servers to go offline, and I couldn't send mail from either gmail address. My current workaround is to send the mail from another domain. I don't know if there are any disadvantages to this down the line.

  • How to get the Domain Name of recipient Email ID when the recipient in the Address Book

    Hi All,
I am new in Outlook Development and I have stuck in a situation, please find below the situation:
I want to get the recipient domain address when someone is sending the email. Now, the thing is that I am facing the issues when the Email Id is in the address book. For an example "John Smith @live.com" is the email ID but when this email is in
the address book it shows "John Smith ".  I’m trying to read out the email address from an Exchange connected Outlook in time of sending the email.
So, my question is how I can get the domain in this situation?
    Thanks in Advance..

    Hi,
Based on my research, there is no way to change the behavior on Outlook side. Email addresses are resolved to user names by Exchange server which is expected by design.
I'd recommend you post a new question in the Exchange forum to see if we can achieve the goal on Exchange side. For your convenience:

  • Problems with sending icard to all in address book.

I am sending an icard by selecting all in my address book.
You can only select all one page at a time. Well I am on the third page of my contacts & it won't let me send any of them because it says there is an error with the recipient list. I have gone back and checked every one of the addresses on that page and they look fine. Is this a common problem and what could it be? It automatically puts them on list when you select all & adds a comma in between names so it's not something like that.

You don't mention who your ISP is, nor how many contacts are in All. Many ISPs limit the number of e-mails that can be sent in a 24 hour period to thwart spammers. This may be the real cause of the error message you are receiving. All to often error messages don't really address the actual problem.
    Just a guess.

  • Using "Send Update" from the address book file menu.

I plan to use the "Send Update" from the File menu in Address Book to notify a large group I've created of my upcoming change of address. If a person on my list of people to to receive the update message has more than one email address, to which email address does Address Book send the message? All email address' of each person?
Also, I assume, from the email message window created when sending an update, recipients will see only the name of the group I created instead of all of the email addresses of all the people to which the update was sent. Have I assumed correctly?

How did you move your Thunderbird data from its default position?
If you had simply shifted your entire profile, the address book files would have moved too, so I suspect you've used the dangerous and inadvisable "Local Directory" option in Account Settinhgs to relocate specific mailstore files. :-(
I don't know of any way to set the path for address books. They are, it seems, required by design to reside in the user profile folder.
I don't like to advise use of the Local Directory settings, since doing so detaches message stores from your profile and makes profile management and maintenance a whole lot more difficult. Automated tools such as Mozbackup won't know to look outside the regular profile to safeguard your messages. All the published advice about profile management assumes you use the default locations which are within the profile. The Local Directory setting should, IMHO, be hidden inside the about:config editor for use only by power users.

  • How to send message to entire Address Book

I recently got a new email address and wondered if there is an easy way to send a message (in Mail) to everyone in my Address Book. The only Group in my Address Book is "All" - can I send a message to All somehow? Thanks.

Create a new group. Drag your contacts into the group folder. When you create the email select the group as the recipient and drag it to the To: field of the email message.
