Whats best to Capture HD

I want to use my Mac for some HD video editing, but one of the guy's I am working with says that Final Cuts codec’s are crap and we need to use Cineform and Vages to bring in the video. Then we can take it to the Mac, but I just want to make sure what this guy says is correct and not just a die hard PC fan that wants to knock everything that Mac does. I was told by more than one person this guy knows what he is talking about, but I have Final Cut HD along with After Effects and Motion with two 30 inch monitors and hate to use a PC. I use both PC and Mac, but prefer Mac, but don't have a problem using a PC, but it's just a waist not to use what I have! The other guy I am working with says that a lot of compression has to be decompressed without altering the info and that cineform will play in real time and would work out great for what we need and he has seen the stuff that was done using Cineform and Vages and it looks great. They are sending the work they did with these two programs to Cannes in the next few days so I am sure they did their research...I just want some non-bias information.

I know this is somewhat of a delayed question, but you seemed to give a straight answer about Vegas and FCP so maybe you give me an idea on the best way to go before my next upgrade. After a month on working with FCP 4.5 HD on two different systems, I seem to continually have system crashes on both a dual 2.5 GHz system with 4 gig of ram and a 1 GHz system with 1 gig of ram. Both are running 10.3.9 and I am thinking of going on and upgrading to FCP 5 along with Tiger. I have been a die hard Mac fan for sometime after crossing over from a PC back in `96, but I am getting fed up with the direction Mac is going and will no longer tell people that Macs are better than PC’s…but that’s not what this is about. My question is how well is FCP and Tiger working and are you having any crashes? I didn’t catch what version of FCP and OS you are running, but I am having crashes on both HDV footage and DV footage on both systems. I am talking about 8 or 9 crashes a day and corrupting the files to where I have to start over because the files can’t be opened. Then when I am not having crashes, I will open a file that I have been working on and start getting messages that multiple seq files are missing…then I can close everything out and reopen and they will all be there. Then this seems to happen every other day or so when opening a file only to get a message that the file is unable to be opened and then I try again later and it opens without a problem. These are strange problems and after having a friend that has used FCP 2 on OS 9 for several years…he could not understand why it was doing this stuff. He works for a TV station in Mexico and says that version does just what they need and he had been told if they go to a newer setup, they will have downtime because of the bugs. Now on the other hand…I like to keep up to date with my computers and software and have never been one to stick with older stuff just cause it works. I make my living with Photoshop and Illustrator and have never had any problems like I am seeing with FCP 4.5 HD. I can understand that if a TV station went to this version and had the problems I am having…they would be shut down! I will most likely go ahead and upgrade, but I am not happy about spending the amount of money I did on FCP4.5HD and it looks like the only way to find a solution is to spend another $300.00 dollars and hope that takes care of it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The Grass Valley ADVC 110 Media Converter requirers firewire.
I have and use the Blackmagic Video recorder which is USB based -

BUT it converts the video to H.264 format which is a very difficult format to edit in. It is primarily designed to allow you to load video on to your computer for viewing, posting to you tube, or other very simple uses.
If you intend to edit these files with iMovie, you might be able to get away with it (although importing the files will be slow), if you plan to edit with Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro you will need to convert them to an editable format.
You might look at taking your camera somewhere to a facility that can properly capture the DV material on your Mini-DV tapes and put them on an external hard disk for you.
Then you could plug in that disk on your computer and obtain access to the files that way.

I bought an intel imac and was relying on FCP5 but now I realize it is not universal until march. I have tons of video to capture from mini DV and I want to have it all captured and ready for editing in FCP5 when it is available. I want to make sure it captures in the right AVI format for FCP5. What is the best video capturing program to use in the mean time until FCP5 is released?

I thought about imovie but I am not familar with the different formats imovie can capture in. I need a compatiable format for FCP5

H.264 MPEG 4 slow to scrub through.. What best to convert to?

I'm on a PC Intel i5 2500k, Geforce 560Ti, 20 gigs of ram, and I notice that while I can scrub footage off of a 60D just fine, when I import and try to scrub through video taken off my Toshiba Camileo, they are so slow. G spot says its H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Wondering what best to transcode to to better work inside Premiere.

res is 1080. For sequence settigns, what i did was use dslr 1080, i figured thats what it is, so that would work fine. But on a hunch I took a clip off the 60d in a bin and dragged it down to the new item and it made a "custom" sequence with settings completely different than the one I started with. The original one had all the sequence settings locked. This new one made by dragging the clip gives options to set the preview file format and codecs. I imagine this will help if I set this properly, but I am confused which to set it to. I just tried a couple different ones and while the 60d footage in the sequence plays fine, if I drag the ones off the Camileo into the sequence and play, it plays fine for a few seconds then lags and catches up with itself.
Theres no effects ont he footage, this is a brand new project.
I have 4 total disks, but 2 are USb storage. The project files for this are on an internal.
This may sound stupid but it plays back better at full res than it does at 1/2 or even 1/4

EXT4-fs error loading journal - whats best way to recover

uh oh, i have a hard drive crash it appears. i was doing some web dev and i dont want to lose this work. yesterday i noticed the hard light was on almost if not solid. i couldnt log remtoely into ssh, it did answer and let me atleast get to the username, but the password prompt wouldnt come up. the apache server was still running to serve web files, but the WebDAV wouldnt allow file connection, hittting the space bar and mouse wouldnt awake the monitor at all, this went on for several minutes.
so i had to reset (restart). looking back, i think this is the 2nd time i messed up things by resetting the file system while it was doing god knows what.
now when it boots im getting sector and mount errors.

it appears i jacked it up when i reset it during file operations.
where to go from here? i was going to load a partition program just to see if it can read teh drive at all, in the attemtpt to relocate the drive to another pc to backup backup my home directory.
what kind of repair tools can i run from the emergency shell to repair?

Hard drive has quited down, thats a change.
After pulling back up the attribs for the drive it is saying the same thing it said after both the short, and long test before i ran the WD Diagnostics and repair on it. Thats expected im guessing since the SMART is just a log, so i wouldnt expect not to see the info that has already been logged.
ill include a few of those attributes here that were reported when i ran those tests here incase anybody can help figure out their real meaning. What i want to point out is that i found out that if the TYPE attribute comes up as "pre-fail" and "oldage", its my take that it means replacement is suggested, but does NOT mean the drive is failing. Although this is counter intuitive, basically the more important attribute is "WHEN_FAILED". see the quote from the man below for more info on this...

The Attribute table printed out by smartctl also shows the "TYPE" of the Attribute. Attributes are one of two possible types: Pre-failure or Old age. Pre-failure Attributes are ones which, if less than or equal to their threshold values, indicate pending disk failure. Old age, or usage Attributes, are ones which indicate end-of-product life from old-age or normal aging and wearout, if the Attribute value is less than or equal to the threshold. Please note: the fact that an Attribute is of type 'Pre-fail' does not mean that your disk is about to fail! It only has this meaning if the Attribute's current Normalized value is less than or equal to the threshold value.
If the Attribute's current Normalized value is less than or equal to the threshold value, then the "WHEN_FAILED" column will display "FAILING_NOW". If not, but the worst recorded value is less than or equal to the threshold value, then this column will display "In_the_past". If the "WHEN_FAILED" column has no entry (indicated by a dash: '-') then this Attribute is OK now (not failing) and has also never failed in the past.
I have a couple questions
Do i have this figured out right?
This particular hard drive is ok for stable use until i can afford to replace it? I plan to keep an eye on the SMART monitor to look for fails as well.
How would i run a proper file check, as opposedf to a file system check, because localhost/phpmyadmin isnt working, and thats where it all started. im sure the files got chewed up there, and elsewhere.

Try these 3 possible solutions:
1. Restart iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, hold down the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
2. Close inactive Apps
Double-click the Home button; hold Apps down (in the Task Bar) for a second or two until you see the minus sign. Tap and close all inactive Apps.
3. Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the red slider.

What type of Capture Deck should I get?

Well I've been capturing footage from my Panasonic DVX-100a Camera for a while now into final cut, and I'm told that I am a fool for doing so (head damge to the camera), so...what type of capture deck should I get? I have about $500 to spend. Any websites or brand names that you could give me would be great thanks!

I've gone off on this too many times, so I'll cut myself off as shortly as I can, but since you asked...
I think a retail pricetag of ~ $1675.00 USD is excessive for a glorified VCR, yes. Sure they're handy and hardy, do timecode, A/D conversion, etc.. yes. Great. So do $200.00 cams. I'm guessing the DSR-11 costs about 100-150 USD to make. Compare it so say a Sony PS3 as far as components, R&D costs, the whopping avertisement cost of ZERO, etc, yes they're big fat sham. I understand the history behind the VTR and that it's target audience was primarily industrial/commercial/professional prior to the boom in consumer level NLEditing popularity. But now that we've got firestores and P2 cards and everyone and their brother has a computer with Vegas and a DV camera it's high time that Sony and others get with the program and drop prices on outdated technology.
One always should pay a premium for any high end professional quality piece of machinery- but the DSR-11 in particular isn't THAT solid. Compare it to the DSR-30 in build quality and it's night and day. Then again the DSR-30 cost about 2x the DSR-11 when in production. (still doesn't weaken my argument at how costly the entry level machine is) They just aren't worth as much as they cost period, but due to a controlled market have stayed pricey. Someone should come along and sell a DSR-11 equivalent for 600 bucks, still make a handy profit, and force prices down.
Remember.. you asked. Sorry regardless for the rant.
(and I've heard the JVC VCR/combo is pretty weak before it gets mentioned. I mean a true equivalent.) The JVC thing should be sold for 300.

Best video capture device?

Ok quick question, I know the answers will be opinion only, but for all you who are experienced with Macs and the OS, which is the best video capture device (most like a Tivo) to use with my new iMac G5? Any help is appreciated, you guys have been great so far.

So far, I've had great luck with the Elgato EyeTV 200 unit combined with Toast Titanium 6.1.1. Has the ability to schedule, record, any combination of video you can put through composite and S-Video inputs and give you a nice MPEG-2 muxed output. You can edit out sections of video and save clips which can later be remastered as their own menuitems with Toast. Plus it lets you watch the video live. The first part of the encoding is done all on the box itself. I would though use its preset encoding levels, as the customized encoding video has a tendency to turn out choppy.

What is best screen capture for video to be edited in FCP?

Hello:
I need to add some video from a client's website to include in a video being edited in ye olde FCP 7.
The rest of the video is ProRes 422.
Is there a screen capture software package that can capture in a compatible format and be high resolution enough?
I have looked at ScreenFlow and Camtasia for Mac but they don't have much info on their sites about video specs.
Client wants to capture a webcast and show the video in context of the website it plays on.
I could just shoot the screen with my HD camera but I'm hoping there is something better out there.
Oh - and yes... I have thought of cheating it.... superimposing the original video into a screen grab of the website but the client doesn't have the original video.

How To Find Out What Ratio Video Captured In

Need to find out what ratio of resolution that my mini DV was logged and captured in i.e. 1:1, (best) 2:1, 3:1. Cannot locate the Assistent Editor who captured it. Is there a way of finding that out in the application?

Open the file in QT Player, then hit Command j to see the clip's specs. Or in FCP, right-click on the clip and choose Item Properties from the contextual menu.
