Whats running in the backround of imac

iMac is consistently running slow. The spinning wheel is always present, whether I am trying to close a program, open a program or in Safari.
I've repaired the disk in disk utilty which has not helped. Machine is close to 4 years old with 2.66 core duo, 4GB running 10.8.2. My son plays Minecraft so I'm not sure if that reamins in the backround even if the program is closed. Any help would be appreciated.

How much free space on your hard drive?

  • Firefox keeps running in the backround after closing it, it just lingers there, and when I try to restart firefox, it says that I have to close the current one or restart my system to clear the last firefox. what can I do, thanks...

After the last update, my IBM Clone computer does not close the session of firefox when clicking on "close" it clears the screen back to the desktop but firefox continues to hang there in the backround and will not allow another session of firefox to start until the first session is closed. The only way to reconnect is to do a restart on my system, and then the old firefox session is closed and the new session will start.

Must be the "hang at exit" problem. <br /><br />

  • What's with the brand new imac's not being able to handle 3 tracks in garage band? This is crap!

I have been so dissapointed by Lion i'm thinking about selling the brand new Imac. No Rosettta?! So i cant use Final Cut express anymore or CS3, and I don't WANT TO UPGRADE> And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many? I can work better on my 2008 macbook!!!!

And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many?
There must be something wrong. A brand-new iMac should really perform better.
What model did you buy (Processor, how much disk space, how much RAM)? Can it be, that your harddrive is too full with less than 15 GB of free space, or the iMac has not enough RAM? Lion needs a bit more memory than Snow did.

  • If you close magic jack app and it's not running in the backround then the pod touch 4 wont' ring right?

I might have put this question in the wrong catergory if you think it would be better asked in the app category please let me know but I know this is the general board for most main questions.
        HERE'S WHAT I READ"
Most of the apps showing in the Recents tray are not actually running. Very, very few apps are doing much of anything in the background. The only ones that are likely to be draining your battery would be apps that play music or access location services. Unless you're noticing unsual behavior from the phone, it's not really worth the effort to go quitting everything. Last time I counted, I had about 80 "recently used" apps showing.  I have no issues with battery life.
So if if I have Magic Jack open and I just hit home button once then it will ring but if I close it by double clicking the home button and deleting it to close it would it still ring?

       Thanks for your response IIIaass,
I have a couple of questions, I was under the notion that when you simply clicked the home button once the app is closed but I've heard different.
       1)   So if you have an app open and you click the home button once and the screen shuts down it's still running in the background right. But to close the app completely you have to click on the home button twice and then the the screen raises up and you tap on the app until it jiggles and you see the red minus badge and then you delete it this is closing the app completely right? Or does the app close when your viewing it and just click the home button once and the screen shuts down it would be still running in background?
       2)  So let's me see if I got it straight. In order to close an app you have to double click on the home button tap until it jiggles and tap the red minus sign badge and then that completely closed the app? Am I right on that
Also as long as you have notification turned on you can close the app completely by double clicking on home button and delete the app to close it and Magic Jack will still ring even though the app is completely closed because I didn't know if it had to run in the background in order for a call to come through and ring. But from what your saying you can close the app completely and as long as notification is turned on the call will still come through. See question 1 above to see if I've got it right about an app running in background and closing an app. I always thought when you were viewing an app and you home clicked one and the screen shuts down the app is closed until recently I heard it's not close until you double click and delete it from the bottom under the dock.  I just want to make sure I've got it straight!
       Thanks for your response!

  • What kind of the ethernet for iMac 27 inches

Hello this is James Lawrence. I wonder to ask you what kind of ethernet for iMac 27" mid 2011  it is like CAT 5E or other?

Cat 5e cables work just fine.  Cat 6 is only needed for true, full gigabit ethernet, which most people don't really need.  If you are transfering large files, music, or video, cat 6 may be worth investing in as the cables are higher priced than cat 5e.  I use cat 5e cables throughout my house and have no problem with my 50 MBS broadband  service on a mid 2011 27" iMac like yours.  The ethernet port will work with 10/100 switches and hubs just as well as 10/100/1000 gigabit units.

  • What happened to the multi-touch imac

I heard from several people that apple has patented the idea of a multi-touch imac.
Is apple actually going to build it?

if I knew that I would probably be a rich man. they did file a patent that goes somewhat in that direction, that's all.
don't wait for it, it won't be coming for the next couple of years. get a magic mouse instead ^^

  • What happened to the i5 & i7 iMac models?

Was just looking to upgrade my old G5 iMac, to a super powered i7, and that option is not listed anymore.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot I do aside from playing WoW occasionally.
I also have Fink installed on it, and I watched it compile a few programs. The only other thing I used to do on my Mac was to re-encode capture using ffmpegx. Haven't tried since my G4 was my vid cap machine.
    I don't have any "pro" apps on my machine, but compiling stuff with gcc is fast. Almost makes me want to develop for iPhone/iPod touch. (;

  • After quitting Firefix a process is still running in the backround which eats MEGA resources ( 1 GB)

Just exiting Firefox (Version 4 does the same thing) I have to open up the Windows Task Manager, search for Firefox.exe and remove the process by hand. It shows most of the time a usage of over 1 GB, which slows the system tremendously down because of the swap file usage.. Also, the more pages I open, the slower it gets. Even the respond of the mouse click takes several seconds which pisses me off totally. There are some nice features with firefox, but I only use it now when I need it. Google Chrome is much faster, reliable, and removes unneeded rubbish - you can watch the difference with "System Explorer"!
    Thanks
    Vido

    Delete the following code:
    on quit
    quit
    end quit
The purpose of the 'on quit' handler is so additional instructions can be executed when the script is told to quit. If desired, 'continue quit' can be part of the handler to call the normal quit command; without the 'continue', the script just repeats the handler over and over with no exit, which causes the overflow.

  • Good evening, How can I check if there are downloaling programs running in the background while using an IPod. I want to eliminate them because my internet dowload volume has increased dramatically.

How can I check if I have a software(s) installed on my Ipod touch (4th generation) that download information all the time in the background? My internet downlaod consumption has increased dramatically lately and I cannot solve the problem. An online support person from my internet provider suggested to check that out.
    Thanks for your¸help.

    HI northangel,
you can press the home button double times and the bottom of the screen and it will show apps that are running in the backround.

  • TS1587 I tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up. Turning it on you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark. Any ideas what to do? Thanks Maja

My iMac won't start up, or wake from sleep.  I've tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up.  Turning it on, you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark.  Any ideas what to do?  Thanks!

    Mac doesn't boot
Can you hear the fans and hard drive and see the white boot screen? Flashing question mark? The circle just runs and nothing happens? Only black screen and nothing else? These can be very helpful to diagnose the source of the problem. [1]
Flashing question mark [2]: This is usually a sign of a failed hard drive. This indicates that boot up volume can not be found.
Black screen: This is usually a sign of a failed logic board. There is no single reason for this and this may be caused by failed GPU, screen, CPU or RAM.
Circle of death/no circle/blue screen: This is usually a sign of a hard drive failure. This may NOT be a dead hard drive, just broken permissions or something
Gray screen/Apple logo/spinning gear or globe/prohibitory sign/folder with flashing question mark [3]: This could be a sign of faulty hardware but more likely a software issue, i.e. broken permissions, failed software update, etc.
    [edit]
    What to do
First, hold down the option key (also known as the alt key) just after you've pressed the power button. This should show all the available options to boot from, so if you have Windows installed through Bootcamp or a disk in your SuperDrive, you should be able to see them along with your OS X drive/partition. Select the OS X partition with arrow keys and press enter. Startup key combinations
If that doesn't help continue doing the steps from below:
    1. SMC reset [4]. Shut down and unplug all cables including power cord for at least 30 seconds and then plug in power cord and keyboard/mouse.
    2. PRAM reset [5]. Hold down option, command, P and R while booting. Start it when you hear the sound and don't let go before it reboots.
    3. Safe boot [6]. Hold down shift while booting to boot into safe mode. If this works, open Disk Utility from Utilities and repair your permissions and verify the disk
    4. Hardware test [7]. Insert the install disk (disk 1 in Mac which shipped with OS X 10.5.4 or earlier, disk 2 if shipped with OS X 10.5.5 or newer) and hold down "D" before the grey boot screen opens. Follow on screen instructions
    5. Boot from install disk. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac. Hold C while booting. Select Disk Utility from top bar and repair permissions and verify the disk. Reboot normally and see if it works now.
    6. Boot from another Mac (Firewire target disk mode). Connect the machines with a Firewire cable. Power on your Mac and press T. Select the other Mac's hard drive. Download the current OS X combo update. Run the combo update installer and select the drive that won't boot as the destination.
    7. "Repair" OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and reinstall OS X. This should NOT erase any data, just replaces the system files which may have caused your booting problem. Now install the latest combo update for OS X and repair permissions on your drive with Disk Utility.
7.1. Install OS X into an external hard drive and then boot from it [8] and try to copy your data from the hard drive before proceeding. If you have done a backup recently, you don't have to do this.
    8. Restore OS X from Time Machine backup. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac and choose the Time Machine restore option. This step will lose any changes made since your last backup but the system and your data will be put back to exactly as it was on that date.
8.1 Reinstall OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and select Disk Utility again. Now erase the whole hard drive and install OS X again. If you had a Time Machine backup and step 7 worked you don't have to do this.

I have two computers - iMac and PC.  What is the EARLIEST version of Acrobat I can run on each system.  I am running 10.9.2 on iMac and Windows 8 on PC.  Thanks.

Adobe currently supports Acrobat X and Acrobat XI for Mac and Windows platforms. More details about base system requirements can be found here: Tech specs | Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and the changes to these requirements with the product updates can be found here : Overview — Acrobat and Adobe Reader Release Notes. So the earliest version would be Acrobat X and the Latest would be Acrobat XI.
