Whats taking up the hard drive

Ok heres the deal. I have or had a corruted sparse image.(I will never EVER use the unstable program again) I did something to get the stupid thing to mount but it was now empty inside. So I logged onto the now "fixed" account and turned off file vault for it. Then I deleted the account after I saw it was now blank in it then deleted the account. It turned it into a small dmg file but I deleted it. The result didnt help as if its somewhere there but now hidden. Trust me the space wasting thing still consumes my hard drive. I know because the sparse image was 63 some GB's. Yeah yeah I shouldnt have gotten that big but why is it still wasting it? I want the free space again

Lol it was the first account I made on this computer/admin. It tried to be sneaky to make it sneaky to make itself invisible. I did a terminal command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES
after I delete it I will put it back by doing the command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO
I am still use to the OS version still that I grew up in so I had to do a search cause OSX is still fresh to me ^^;;;

Hard drives don't die then come back to life. Your drive never died. You just thought it did.
Obviously, if a hard drive isn't on and spinning its life is longer than when it is always on and spinning. If a hard drive in a laptop is idle it goes to sleep. That's normal because it prolongs battery life. Of course it hardly matters if the computer is running on AC power. The drive may still go to sleep but there's no impact on the battery.
If the computer is in use 24/7 then its useful life will be less than if it's in use only 12/7 or 8/7. This is both logical and obvious. But in the long run all computers or their hard drives fail. There is little you can do to prevent that. They are meant to be used. If your life is dependent on the computer being usable, then buy another one as a spare. Or at the very least buy a backup drive, keep the computer backed up, then you can worry less about drive failure.

  • What happened to the Hard Drive icon?

Just booted a brand new MacBook Pro and went thru the initial set-up, but there is no "Hard Drive" or "Macintosh HD" folder on the desktop anymore.  Do I now need to click on the Finder every time I want into the hard drive?

Oh, yeah, Mountain Lion is so terribly shy of letting you see all its privates...
While you're munging up Finder's desktop Preferences, may also want to visit the Sidebar tab and set up what you want to see in there as well.

  • What are all the hard drive icons on my desktop from app installations?

Most of the apps I have installed leave a new hard drive icon on my desktop, like these. Obviously the Macintosh HD is an good one to keep, but the others just keep accumulating and I find that to be a problem.
    What are these?
    What purpose do they serve?
    Can I delete them?
If no delete, can I hide them?
    Thanks

    1. Mounted disk images.
    2. They contain the software or its installer. The dmg format doesn't require separately storing the decompressed version of the data on the computer.
    3. Yes.

I have very little space left on the hard drive on my macbook, on my storage report it says "other" is taking up more than two thirds of the space on the hardrive. How can I identify what these files are?

    Hello,
There is free software you can download that gives you a graphical image of what files are used on your hard drive. http://www.derlien.com/
This may help you clean down your hard drive for more space.
    Best of luck

Macbook pro redina display keeps on telling me that the hard drive is full from Videos, and yet their is no videos, what can i do?

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Mac mini hard drive crashed. The ecovery drive only offers to reinstall mavericks on the recovery drive. Doesn't see the hard drive. What can I do?

Hi, I have a mid-2011 with Mavericks installed. It crashed. I can boot into recovery mode. And it shows me the name of the hard drive and the recovery partition. When I boot back to the hard drive, it gives the grey screen and a long progress bar. WHen the progress bar eventually fills up, the computer just shuts down. In recovery mode, Disk Utility says the hard disk cannot be repaired.
But when I try to re-install Mavericks from the Recovery Partition, it only shows the recovery partition as the destination, not the rest of the computer.
    Not sure what to do.
Thanks if anyone has any advice.
    J

Thank you very much for the reply.
Indeed, Disk Utility can't even erase and reformat the drive. It's toast.
This is very disappointing. Second Mac Mini I've had go out this year. First seems to be a logic board issue. Now the hard drive on the newer machine.
At least I was able to use Disk Drill to get photos and other important files off the Mini. I had a Time Capsule, but last year, it too died (just a few months out of warranty).
One further question, if you don't mind. If I'm just going to replace the HD on the mini, I'm not sure why one would do this step that you suggested: "get a new HD, put it in an enclosure or use another method that allows the HD to be connect to the Min. Then boot to the recovery partition and install Mavericks on the new HD."
Also, maybe I can replace the drive on the mini myself. Maybe get an SSD for it? They seem more reliable.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer me.

  • HT4527 I just had to clear the hard drive on my computer - now I want to transfer all the music and pictures from my ipad back onto my computer.  'Sync' doesn't do it.  What do I do?

I had toclear the hard drive of my computer and reinstall Windows 7.  Now I want to transfer all the music and photos from my iPad back onto my computer.  I authorized the computer (it is the ONLY computer authorized on this account - and this is the ONLY account on this iPad).  ITunes then downloaded my purchases...or at least it tried - out of the hundreds of tracks I have purchased, it managed one album that I bought over a year ago and NOTHING else.  So I tried to Sync - since on older versions of iTunes (that were SO MUCH MORE user friendly) that would do the job -transferring things that were only on the iPad onto the computer and vice versa.  It doesn't do that anymore.  So I went from my iPad's summary to the Music tab - the box for Music was not checked but when I checked it said the only thing it could do was erase EVERYTHING from my iPad and replace it with what was on my computer (that ONE album).  What is going on?
Why hasn't iTunes downloaded my other purchases since I authorized the computer? (there are over 3,000 tracks...not 18)
How can I download my iPad to my computer?

-Me again - it also won't upload the few new pictures I have on the computer onto the iPad without deleting all the photos that are already there....

  • If the problem's not the Hard Drive, what is it?

My Powerbook G4 got knocked off a table and started acting up right away (crashing, freezing). I did a disk doctor check and it said my HDD was fine. I formatted the disk just in case and reinstalled the OS. It still didn't work. I brought the laptop to the Genius Bar, who told me that it's still probably the hard drive, even though Disk Doctor gave it a clean bill of health. So I bought a new hard drive and carefully and tediously installed it. I then formatted it and installed a new OS. Seemed fine. I ran the intro and all that, then shut it down, thinking all was well. The next day I booted it up, got the chime and apple logo, and the progress bar went about 20% and then froze. It now does that every time I try to reboot and the only option is to hold down the power button to shut it down.
So, to summarize, the thing won't boot into the OS and I've replaced the hard drive. What else could the problem be?

    OK, I have a G4 powerbook with a new 80gb hard drive.
You have either a 2004 PB G4 12" 1.33 GHz or a 2005 PB G4 12" 1.5 GHz computer. In either case, if you have the orginal HDD in the computer it is at an age where it will be functionally and physically degraded. Replacing the HDD was likely the right move.
I installed a 518 RAM card before this issue arose, but the problem seems to exist independant of that RAM.
You likely installed a 512 MB module.
Apparently the fall did something else to your computer, but it is not possbile to tell at this point. I suggest that you proceed as BGreg suggested. Boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer and run the extended tests in a loop (hold down Control + L during tests) and let it run for several hours, if necessary, as it may take a while for intermittent issues to surface.

  • I have denied all access to the hard drive on my i mac what can i do to be able to use it again

I have denied all acess to the hard drive on my Imac I purchased a refurbished imac about 6  months ago and im still not really familiar with every thing as i used to use a windows computer so ill try my best to describe what i have done. On the desk top it had a hard drive icon I open it. There was a section about allowing access. There were three different ones (now Im not exactly sure but i believe it looked something like this
    System     Read and Write
                    Read only
                   Write to drop box
    User
                    Read and Write
                    Read only
                   Write to drop box
    Shared     Read only
                   deny access
I then changed the bottom one to deny access, the middle one to write to drop box and then the top one to write to drop box ( I quickly realized how stupid this was) It then wouldn't let me do or open anything. I ended up turning it off by pressing the button on the back of the I MAC. When I turned it back on it asked for my password which i entered, then it went to the screen with the apple in the center and the loading icon underneath and has not changed.
What can i do so i can use it again?
I think it was OS 9.5.? I dont really know and cant even access this info anymore

in the folders on the left your will have your mail account and local folders.
Anything in local folders is stored only on your local hard disk.
    * Right click the mail account. Select settings
    * Select copies and folders for your university account
    * Click archive options and select the type of structure you want the archive in. (keep existing folder structure would be important to you think)
    * in the copies and folders, change the archive folder to other and select the archive folder for local folders (the local folders account entry in the list will expand if you hover the mouse over it)
    Now some other points. ''
    * Holding shift while clicking select everything in the list between clicks. Holding Ctrl while clicking will hold the selections and allow other entries to be toggles on and off by clicking them.
    * Ctrl+A will select the entire list
    Finally''
Pressing the A key when mail is selected archives it.

I replaced the hard drive to a 30gig on my Ipod 4th gen. click wheel but it is still not recognized on my computer or in itunes......I get an error message with a folder and "!"....what can I do to fix??

Have you recharge the battery for at least 2 hours, or just leave it connected for 4 hours?
(When you replaced the Hardisk, you should also replace the battery.)
Some other iPod SSD sites, says that you may have to format the CF in FAT32, as Mac dont read NTFS drive so if Windows is the 1st PC that your CF is connected, it may be formatted to NTFS.
You can try erasing the CF using Disk Utilty, so that Mac can recognise it. (but not Windows)
