I want to put videos on my ipod but not all of them are in the correct format. does anybody know any good software for converting them. i have windows xp and i do not have quicktime pro

There are several programs mentioned in various strings here. I stumbled on PQ DVD to pod converter and it works very well. You can download a trial version from the link below. It restricts conversion time but is enough for most music video lengths and free. If you want the full version it's about 34 bucks. I use the same hadrware and softaware as you by the way.

Need to know what is the best and cheapest product for pure B&W only.

I am switching from fine art 4x5, B&W photography in the old fashioned chemical darkroom to pure digital. I want to get the best professional Adobe program for this purpose at the best cost. Not interested in any fancy manipulation beyond what I could do in the old chemical darkroom, simply want to produce the best "straight" black and white images in sizes up to 20x24. Have a trial version of Lightroom and I've heard Adobe Camera Raw is a needed program also. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have a Plustek Opticfilm 7600I Ai 35mm scanner that came bundled with SilverFast Ai. The biggest advantage is Multi-exposure function which takes two or more scans at different exposure levels and combines them to increase Dmax range. Dmax is where virtually ALL scanners fall short, except expensive ($5,000+) drum scanners. By extending Dmax with Multi-exposure the shadow areas (slide film) of the image have reduced noise and blocking. I couldn't even begin to scan Kodachrome slides without it! B&W negatives have lower contrast range, but Multi-exposure will surely improve the highlight detail (i.e. Negative images). There are also a number of different dust spot removal functions, including ICE. You need to check if ICE is actually supported on the target scanner and I believe it is not as effective with B&W negatives due to silver halide grain type. You' have to sort out the benefits of SilverFast that are applicable to B&W negatives versus the scanner manufacturer's software. IMHO the scanner bundles that include Silverfast (Epson 750-M) are the best bang for your buck. Some people swear by Vuescan:

Opinions on which is best vary more than the weather! IMHO for 35mm color film work SIlverfast Ai pulls the best capability out of my scanner. Here's a 3600dpi scan (4,833 x 3,240) of a 35mm Fujichrome Provia 100 slide showing a 100% crop (557 x 386). I use IT8 Ektachrome and Kodachrome calibration slides with SilverFast to create custom film profiles. It doesn't get any better than this, at least with 35mm film (double-click on the picture to see 1:1).

Whats the best free video converter ?

I am sending out a small mov (DV) file to a a few dozen people (not clients as this is a free thing).
These people want to be able to convert this avi file down to a MP4 or other formats that will work fine on:
Mobile phones
Video frames
small portable data projectors
etc
What free video converter would you recommend to these guys?
I thought of AnyVideo Converter which is perhaps the most popular.
But I heard that AVC is dropping some features hoping people with upgrade to their pro version etc.
Han anyone got any comments on what free converter I can recommend to these people?
(These people will have Windows computers .... sorry ... :s )

I don't have any experience with Any Video and what it does with audio _ much less what it was doing for a 4 hour process. You could run it through MPEG Streamclip and change the sampling rate,
Or perhaps post this on the QuickTime forum.

If you don't want to purchase third-party software to do this...easiest way, then you'll have to either copy/paste to Notes & sync the Notes to your computer, or take screen shots. Both of those methods are time consuming, but are free. I'm not aware of any "free" software that will do what you want.

Best and cheapest shuffle protection

So, I ordered my ipod shuffle today. Now I wonder what is the best and cheapest protection (available in Canada):
1. Usually, one has to buy several covers at a horrendous price. I don't need three or five, but one.
2. There is this Apple all-weather plastic case that costs close to half of the 512 MB shuffle. People reported it does not last long. Uneconomic!
3. Will Saran wrap work?
I really wonder whether there is a great, reasonably priced protectors...also available here in Canada.
Which one can ouy recommend?

Both my wife and I run everyday for exercise. We listen to audio books while we run, and protect our Shuffles with the Shuffle Sport Case (about $30US -- a bit cheaper from Amazon.com). The Sport Cases are quite durable and reliably protect the Shuffles from moisture (rain and perspiration) -- they are, however, not waterproof (i.e., they're not submersible). One caution: the latches are somewhat "flimsy." To preserve the latches, squeeze the two halves of the Sport Case together with your fingers and then slide the latches closed -- don't use the latches to draw the two halves of the Sport case together.

There is at least one way on each operating system (windows and mac) to rip your own dvds and then transfer them to itunes and finally put them on your ipod. A mac is the easiest of the two ways. If you have a mac, then you download a program off of the web called handbrake (just "google" >handbrake rip dvds< and its homepage should pop up or try <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://handbrake.m0k.org). Handbrake allows you to copy and convert your dvds to ipod format. On a windows operating system the most effective way i have found to rip my dvds is quicktime pro($25-$35). You can buy it at quicktime's website. It basically does the same thing as handbrake. I, myself, have simply converted some videos, like sports shows and commercials, to ipod format using itunes and both the video and audio worked fine.

What is the bottom line for best quality for 720 p TV.
1.) My import is digital video 1080i to i Movie 08 (full quality)
What should I use for sharing on AppleTV
- the preset Large (which is 960x 540)
- or some custom setting 25 fps at 1220x 720? ( H.264 display dimensions at 24/25 fps is 720p (1280x720) ) - or what should the setting be??
2.) Have Windows avi older 720 *480 video, what is best setting to convert this for Apple TV? The 640 setting on QuickTime premium is not very good

Your best option if you are using NTSC footage in imovie is the export to/movie large (960 x 540) at 30 fps, the resolution won't go any higher and still work on the tv. Don't even think about changing the framerate to 24/25 fps, even though you'll be able to export to 720p (1280 x720) changing the framerate will make your video jerky.
If you are using PAL then yes you could export to 720p (even though the specs say 24 fps, 25 fps does in fact work as well), you could try a few tests yourself but I've already done them and IMHO there is so little difference between 960 x 540 and 1280 x 720 that it isn't worth messing about setting up and trying several manual exports to get the best results when you can click one button and be done.
So far a AVI conversion is concerned, I'd try mpegstreamclip, but saying that I can't really be sure. AVI is a container not a codec and I would need to know what codec is actually used inside the container to answer your question properly (Quicktime may tell you though). The problem with AVI is that it is simply so old (even microsoft abandoned it over 10 years ago), unfortunately in a small number of cases some of the codecs that were used in AVI are simply no longer able to be converted. Probably not so likely but at least you are warned.
